Report Server Service Stopping Unexpectedly

we run ssrs 2005 sp2 hotfix applied - how do we troubleshoot a problem where the report server service is stopping unexpectedly several times a day.  When this happens please tell me what happens to the reports that are currently running.  I believe that

1)  a current subscription that is running will fail - not sure if it will try to restart itself 3 times or not

2)  connection to the report server db cannot be made when that occurs

this is a huge problem for us and we dont know what is causing it or how to fix it.  Any suggestions would help.  I can tell you that our customers flood the server with subscriptions

"The MSSQLServer Service Terminated Unexpectedly. "
MSSQLService terminated by itself, and autorestart successfully, however, there is no dmp files, no other msg on SQL errorlogs, SQLagent logs and NT event viewer logs.
it is SQL 7.0(sp3) Standard Edition on NT 4(sp6a).
It happens a few times today.
Rebooting both the web and databse server did not help.
Anyone has any suggestion or experience ???

ReportServer Service Terminated Unexpectedly
I have been looking for some information regarding an error I have gotten several times on my production SQL Server 2000 box. Operating System is Windows Server 2003.  The Reporting Services version is 8.00.878.00

Error is as follows:
The ReportServer service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

The service restarts normally, or at least seems to, and Reporting Services work with no other issues.  Received the error this morning (11/14); last time was on 10/31.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,
Cecily

Problems Stopping SQL6.5 Service
Has anyone got any clues for me about problems I'm having stopping 6.5 mssql service? It happens when our backup software calls a batch file to stop the sql services. Sometimes (1 or 2 times a week) the mssql service will fail to stop. It just tries indefinately till we come in and kill it. Has anyone had problems like this before? The NT event logs hold no clues nor the sql logs. Is there any extra logging I can turn on to reveal the problem it has stopping this service?

net stop mssqlserver

Thanks,

Simon

Stopping And Starting SQL Service On A Cluster
hello everyone,

I wonder if you can help me with a problem I have trying to support a web based application that uses SQL 2005.

The problem is that the application developers tell me that it is neccessary to stop and restart the SQL service as part of the troubleshooting process when their application stops working. Unfortunately, the customer has our application database on a clustered SQL instance that is used by other applications so they cannot just stop and restart the SQL service because this will have a major impact on all the other instances...

Is there another way that would effectively do the same thing as stopping and restarting the SQL service? I have read that dettaching and re-attaching might do the same but application developers say onlt stopping/restarting services is sufficient to break the connection with the application.

Any advice would be really welcome as I am completely new to SQL and struggling with this!

Many thanks, Nick.

Stopping A Run-away Service Broker Process

I have a service broker process that's in run-away mode and I cannot figure out how to stop it.

Here's the situation:

The stored procedure named in the activation queue is opening a transaction but not closing it.  The receive loop has a timeout of 3 seconds, with MAX_QUEUE_READERS set to 5 so every 3 seconds I'm getting 15 new records in

sys.dm_tran_locks.

The server is at 99% CPU with no users on it.

The problem is I can't stop it.  Here's what I have tried:

Reboot the box                                                                          Clears the lock table and runs away again
ALTER QUEUE <Queue Name> WITH STATUS=OFF                  Just sits there forever
Drop the Service, Drop the Queue                                               Just sits there forever
Dropped the stored procedure itself (!)                                         It's still running like crazy

So my immediate question is how do I stop this crazy thing?  And the follow up question is when a programmer makes a mistake, do we have to reformat our DEV box to recover from it (that's a joke) -- seriously how do you stop a run away service broker process?

Reporting Server Down Unexpectedly
Hi All,

We have a server which has Sql Server 2005 and the reporting server running on it. Now it happens sometimes that the reporting server stops working. We get the following errors randomly whenever we try generating a report

1) Report item not found
2) Transaction error - this is a long error, which has some transaction number and some other stuff

We looked the application Event viewer for the exact problem. It said the "Report Server (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database".
We then opened the reporting Service configuration tool and under the database setup, connected to the database again and applied changes so as to grant rights to the DB again.
After this the reporting server worked fine and reorts were getting generated.
This problem comes has come a number of times already and we can't be expected to do the above fix everytime.
If anybody knows why this issue comes and how it can be resolved please let me know

Regards,
Japjit

SQL Server Setup Unexpectedly Failed ... Again, And Again, And Again
I'm trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 on my Windows XP Laptop and keep getting "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed.  For more information, review the setup summary log file."  I've pasted it in below.    I'm not very computer literate but I've tried to follow the directions on the Microsoft site regarding Windows Installer and dotNet 2.0.  There were no previous versions of  SQL on this laptop.  I have administrative rights on the laptop.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Difference In Starting Rep Service Vs. Stopping And Starting The Rep Job?
When our rep distribution services time-out (several times a day) some dba's just restart the service while others restart the rep job which starts the service.  Are there any differences between  these two methods?  Does restarting the service inherit any changes made to the job's attributes?

Thanks!

SQL Server Express 2005 Setup Unexpectedly Failed
When i try to install, the filed are extracted and then i get this error message:

SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the Setup summery log file in %ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt

I open the file and this is all i get:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.3042.00
==============================
OS Version      : Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Time            : Mon Apr 02 15:31:10 2007

I looked in this forum at others peoples threads and it seems as if they all have a lot larger Summary.txt file.  I never had any other verson of SQL Server installed on this computer and i just uninstalled .net 2.0 framework and reinstalled it.

My computer runs Windows XP Pro with SP 2, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.20 GHz, 1.00GB of RAM.

Anyone have any clue why the installation wont even start?

Configuring SQL Server Report Service
SQL Server 2005 Sp2

Windows Server 2003 Sp2

When i open the Reporting Services Configuration Manager on our newly installed SQL 2005 box i get a red X on "Web Service Identity".

The window in question states that "The Web Service runs under the ASP .NET Machine account under IIS 5 or ..."  with what looks to be a text entry box that is grayed out with the label "ASP .NET Service Account. The text entry box that is grayed out is blank.

When the Apply button is pressed a Task Status box opens at the bottom that states "There was an error setting the identity for the web service. The previously set identity will still be used."

When the option for "Tell me more about the problem and how to resolve it." is pressed i get a dialog box that has two lines of text reading:

"ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: An unknown error has occured in the WMI provider. Error Code 80070005"

"at Report ServicesConfigUI.RSReportSErverAdmin.SetWebServiceIdentity(StringapplicationPool)"

I have the same question as http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=295080&SiteID=1

but hte difference is I my operation system is windows 2003.

Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER)
This error is being displayed in the eventlog every minute.  Any ideas on what it is referring too?  I reviewed some posts but most point to specific problems of report server not running, or receiving this error during a run.  We are receiving no errors at all.  However this is jamming up the event viewer to make troubleshooting other issues very diffucult.

Event Type: Error

Event Category: Management

Report Server Windows Service Problem
Hello,

I am my department's Sys Admin and a relativelty Noobie when it comes to SQL server. So I recently Installed SQL Server 2005 on a Win2003 Server.  During install I set my domain account as the service account login. After the DB and Web Application were setup and running good I realized that the SQL service accounts were logging in as my domain account.  Not a good thing right?  So in SQL Server Configuration Manager I changed the services from logging on as my domain account to the local system account instead.

Enter the problem: now I notice in application event viewer the Report Server Windows Service is erroring every minute. The error reads "Report server windows service cannot connect to the report server database." Im sure this was caused by me changing what account the report server service logs in as and local system account not having appropriate permissions. So what account should the report server windows service log in as? I see where to change the windows report service identity in Configure Report Server but I am not able to backup an encryption key?   Thanks in advance!

Does Visual Studio .NET 2003 Contain SQL Server Report Service?
Hello, everyone:

Some papers introduce that SQL Server Report Service is intergrated in Visual Studio .NET 2003 as Business Intelligence Project in New Project. However I cannot find out Business Intelligence Project after I installed Visual Studio .NET 2003 (Full install).

Are there different versions of Visual Studio .NET 2003 contain SQL Server Report Service?

Thanks

Setup SQL Server Report Service (SSRS) Programmatically
Hi Everybody.

I really hope that someone can help me out on this mission.

I just started with SQL Server 2005 intensely, especially SSRS (Report Service). So far I battled my way through and succeeded. The project has been finished except for the setup/installation part.

I know that I can make use of the .ini file and add parameters to the SQL setup.

So my question is; if it€™s possible to write an application, preferable in VB.NET 2005, which will setup the SQL Server Report Service (Reporting Services Configuration), deploy the Report Model to the Server and deploy the Reports to the Server, programmatically in other words.

All this needs to be done locally, so there is no need to be able to do it remotely from another PC.

Please, can anyone help me? I€™ve bean struggling with this for quite some time now, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Report Server Windows Service Stops Running.
I have a test server running both 2000 and 2005 Reporting Services. Each day I have to restart the Report Server Windows service for the 2005 Report Server. This is the error I get when I try to access the Report Manager

The Report Server Windows service 'ReportServer$TSQL4' is not running. The service must be running to use Report Server. (rsReportServerServiceUnavailable) Get Online Help

After I start the Report Server Windows service using the Report Services Configuration tool I can access the 2005 Report Manager without errors.  The windows service start up type is set to automatic.

I can not find why the 2005 version keeps going down.

Stopping SQL Server Services
Anyone got any "gotchas" or "nightmares" they want to share out of experience where the services have been shutdown without the proper forethought?

I'm trying to put a case in for a SQL DBA to be paged and to be in charge of shutting down the services and/or put together a checklist of things to verify first.

While I realize shutting down the services is supposed to be a graceful shutdown process I'm willing to bet there are a host of considerations.

Appreciate any Input.

SQL Server Agent Stopping
I have a SQL Server agent that keeps stopping for no reason. It happens about every other day. I have to go in on the server and manually start it. What would cause this to happen? We have about 50+ computers that need to sync with the server and do so successfully without having to manually start the agent every other day. How do we fix it?

Detach/Attach DB VS Stopping SQL Server
What problems could be invoked by stopping SQL Server and copying a user databases data and log files and pasting these files over existing files on another machine.

Ex:
MyDB on Server1
MyDB on Server2
Stop SQL Server Server1 and Server2
Copy Server1.MyDB files
Over write Server2.MyDB files
Start SQL Server Server1 and Server2

Make sense. This scenerio seems to work but wonder what side affects could result.

Any comments would be helpful!!

Unable To Export Sub-report Data In Excel Format In SQL Server 2005 Reporting Service
Hello,

I am using 'SQL Server 2005 Reporting Service' in my project. I am using sub-reports in many cases. Whenever I export such reports containing sub-reports to 'Excel' format which is the major client requirement in our project, the exported excel file shows 'Subreports within table/matrix cells are ignored.'

Can anybody tell me the solution for this? If not possible in reporting service then is there any other way to get data in excel format?

Thanks.

-Salil
