Find The Number Of A Row In A Sequence
MySQL Code:
SELECT * FROM comments WHERE id=12345 ORDER BY rating
Is there a way to determine the position that this rows appears in the sequence?
Eg, so I can print out:
"This site is rated position x out of y"

Find All Records With A Certain Number Of Characters
I have had a data problem where a field length has been truncated at 25 characters, rather than the 100 specified in the data type, varchar(100). I believe the problem to be on our website form input and not in MySQL (I didn't code the website, and I'm hoping the guy who did can correct the problem), but I would like to be able to find all the records that have been affected. Is there a WHERE statement that can find all records with at least 25 characters in a particular field?

Find Similar Entries - Return Entry And Number
I have data in the form of random words, with some repeats. Can I write a query that will return the most frequently returned word and how many times it occured? I am just looking for a starting point... Also, will it be possible to return the next 4 records in order. For example, if the word "me" was found 14 times and the word "toad" was found 12 times, it would return "me" and 14 and "toad" and 12?

Disrupted Sequence
Another brainteaser: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `test` ( `id` INT(11) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `cid` VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL, `item` VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL, `val` INT(11) NOT NULL, `dt` datetime NOT NULL default '0000-00-00 00:00:00', PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1 In the above example table I need to find the first 5 highest values of val that break the sequential set of values. In other words: say I have values 49,48,45,44,43,40,39,37,36,34 of val in my table, with 49 being the highest value of val (need to sorted first, because values may randomly be dispersed in my table), then I want to get 47,46,42,41,38 as the query result.

Create A Sequence?
I am creating an application that will contain three tables that need to share the same sequence. Upon digging through the docs, I do not see how I could do this. Could someone give me some guidance into this? Also, As I read the docs, when I am creating tables, there is something about an InnoDB? Sorry to be confused, but I am not sure how to begin creating my database, nor tables without this knowledge.

What Collation Sequence?
I've just transferred a small PHP/MySQL application from a Firepages phpdev5 install to an XAMPP install, so I've got new versions of everything. I used phpMyAdmin to export and import the tables of the database. When recreating the database on my new install I selected the default collation (latin1_general_ci) but my application is now displaying ? in place of a number of characters so I guess I got it wrong. I can't see where in the old phpMyAdmin (2.3.0-rc3) to determine what collation the database uses.

Identity, Sequence, Serial
Does MySQL offer capability for any of the following? - IDENTITY - SEQUENCE - SERIAL Or is AUTO_INCREMENT the catch-all for the functionality of all of the above? I ask because I'm looking into Java EJB3 which describes support for any of the above (as well as AUTO_INCREMENT, so I'm not out of luck completely).

How To Create A Sequence In MySQL
I am not able to create a sequence in MYSQL 5.0 Want help on creating the same. Basically, what I am looking for is, that I should get a number greater that the last one on every call to this sequence. In Oracle, one can simply write something like:- CREATE SEQUENCE seq_ordermaster increment by 1 start with 1 maxvalue 999999minvalue 1 nocache Nocycle; And while calling, one can use it by selecting seq_ordermaster.nextval from DUAL Considering the fact that there is no DUAL table in MySQL, how can One write such a sequence and also, how one can get the next value on each select statement?

I am worried that if multiple users access the database at the same time I will end up with duplicated 'new values'. Does mysql complete execution of a script before it allows access to another user or do I need to 'lock' the table in some way while the script executes?

Generated Sequence # Based Upon Content Of Row Being Inserted
I have a table - CREATE TABLE `sample` ( `Id` smallint(6) NOT NULL auto_increment, `division` varchar(5) NOT NULL, `secion` varchar(5) NOT NULL, `div_sect_seq` smallint(6) NOT NULL default '1', PRIMARY KEY (`Id`) ); I'd like to write the insert statement that would generate the next div_sect_seq number based upon the value being inserted into the table. Let's say that the table contains: |--id--|-division-|-section-|-div_sect_seq-| | 1 | SC | XX | 000001 | | 2 | SC | YY | 000001 | | 3 | SC | XX | 000002 | I'd like to insert a row for divsion = 'SC' and section = 'XX' with the next div_sect_seq (which would be the max value of div_sec_seq + 1 on the sample table for the division and section) which should be the value of 000003.

Formatted Number Column Cannot Be Sorted By Number
Columns come in and are built based on XML doc and the HTML (smarty mysqllate) does not know weather this is a number to format it nicely such as 2345.993 to 2,346.99. So I do my formatting in the XML which gives the dynamic query developer something similar this: FORMAT(price * qty,2) AS sales All was fine and dandy until i wanted to sort it by number. Turns out Format makes it as string and it does a string sort, in other words it would sort it like this: 1223 21 90 So a genius (/sarcasm) told me to "add a zero" to it and it would work. it turned 2,345.00 into 2.00. (had to explain to the client why his biggest sale was showing up as 2.00) Now i've converted it to ROUND() but is there any other way to have the comma (thousands delimiter) as well has have mySQL treat it as a number?

The system complains that it cannot find any of the .MYD files, although they are clearly there. The file system is perfectly analogous to other databases in the same tree which work ok. I can write a program to recover the MYD files in plain text form if I knew the file structure, but I can't figure it out.

Different Way To Find Min
I have the following query (courtesy ip2nation): SELECT c.country FROM ip2nationCountries c, ip2nation i WHERE i.ip < INET_ATON('some.ip.address') AND c.code = i.country ORDER BY i.ip DESC LIMIT 0,1 Given an ip address, it returns the country that has the closest ip to it. Now, I need to join these 2 tables with a table (logs) which contains ips (FROM ip2nationCountries c, ip2nation i, logs l). If I simply replace "WHERE i.ip < INET_ATON(l.ip)", my query is messed up by the LIMIT statement, which will only return only one ip.

Find Value Not In Between Values.
I have a SQL question I am having trouble with. We have a table, with a column that contains a code. These codes start at '00001', '00002', '00003', '00004'... and so on. If the record containing '00003' as it's code is deleted from the table, is there an SQL statement that can be used to find the first missing record. I guess what we are looking for is the lowest value of CODE not in the list of values between two values, such as in the case '00001' to '99999'.
