Importing Tables Using MySQL Control Center

I am using Dreamweaver MX to create a data-driven web site. With the
VPS hosting plan we're on, our remote FreeBSD server only supports the PHP
application server. PHP requires MySql. Thus, I installed a copy of MySQL
Control Center 0.9.2 beta. (I prefer a GUI and not command prompts unless
necessary.)

The information I plan on using in developing this site will be derived from
a contact management program called GoldMine. The records will be exported
into DBase tables, and somehow imported into the MySQL/PHP/Dreamweaver
environment.

From what I can gather so far, the MySQL environment I'm working under will
not work with Access or DBase tables. Thus, I've created a new table in
MySQL and re-created the various fields to match what I have in the DBase
table. Now I want to import all the records I have in my DBase table. In
fact, I will need to update the MySQL database weekly.

So far, I have been successful in making all the connections work, except
for importing the table into MySQL. In the MySQL Control Center, once you
connect to the database, there is an option to import, but it is dimmed out.
How do I make it work?

Permissions In Mysql Control Center
I need to allow 3 different servers to access my MySQL Server. How do I do this? Also, I was told that having MySQL configured so it doesn't restrict access is bad - how do I make sure that's not the case?I feel like I know what they're saying, but I don't know how to actually implement this in the Control Center, and I must be using the wrong keywords because when I look it up, all I find is stuff on how to connect to the MySQL Server from my web page using php (which is what I'm using and already doing).

I keep getting access denied for every attempt. I'm sure I am using the correct password.

Control Center Confusing Hosts
I've got control center installed on my localhost machine where I piddle around with db's on my machine. Today I attempted to connect to another server to assist others in their db work. I inserted xxx.xxx.x.xx for my IP address (obviously I'm susbstituting my actual IP) and when I selected "text", I was echoed back the string:

ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'xxxx@ooo.ooo.o.ooo' (using password: YES)

The complex issue is this, I inserted xxx.xxx.x.xx as my host IP, but instead of using my host IP to test the connection, control center used my localhost IP.

ERROR 1045 When Testing In The Control Center
In the MySQL Control Center 0.9.4-beta, I right click the top level server name and choose the Edit option. Then I have entered a User Name and a Password in the General TAB. I then mark the option "Promt for Password" and hit the "Test" button.

I get a small window where I should enter the password for User name@Host name. I enter the password and hit the OK button. Now I get the error message "ERROR 1045; Access denied for user; 'User name@Host name' (Using password: YES)"

When looking in the Help menu, the Contents - F1 is not activated, so I can't get any online help.

I'm just wondering why the test for the password failed and why there are no online help in the consol?

Importing & Copying Multiple Tables
I was unable to copy my database from my PC (MySQL version 4.X) to my MacBook Pro (5.0.19), so I exported each of my 170 tables as a SQL file, then copied them over to my Mac. Do I now have to import them into my database one at a time, using phpMyAdmin, or is there a way to suck all of them into a database at once?

I want to import all of them into a temporary database, then copy or move the ones I want to keep into an active database. So I wondered if there's a way to copy or move several tables to another database at a time. It appears that I can do this with the linked tables feature.

However, when I checked both tables in my practice database, then clicked "Operations," I got the following message:

Quote:

The additional features for working with linked tables have been deactivated. To find out why click here.

...followed by this message:

Quote:

PMA Database ... not OK[ Documentation ]
General relation features Disabled

Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it?

Troubles Into Importing Data Into Tables With Not Null Fields/keys
I have created a table with some fields set as "not null" and one like record key.

The problem I have is that when I try to import data into the table from a txt file using the command "LOAD DATA INFILE..." it is importing "wrong" or "incomplete" records too

My source data is not always correct and some necessary fields could be not available in the text file.

I was supposing that when a table key value was missing or a null value was entered in a not null field, the entire record should be skipped but it is not so: I can see records where the key is missing or where not null fields are inserted like null.

Importing MySQL In MS Access

BLOB type for this text data.

If I try to import it in MS Access 2002 the BLOB column is converted
to a OLE type, but when I try to open it in access I get this error:

"A problem occurred while Miscrosoft Access was communicating with the
OLE server or ActiveX Control. Close the OLE server and restart it
outside of Microsoft Access. Then try the original operation again in
Microsoft Access."

I know that it's because MS access doesn't know what type of object it
is and with which program it should open it. But I don't know how I can
tell access the type of object it is. Should I create a module to
handle these objects? I'm new to access databases so I don't know where
I should start. If someone has any tips or codes I should use please le
me know.

Should I use another type instead of BLOB?

Importing Data To MySQL
Hey people. Well, obviously I am a newbie, so please be gentle. Basically my problem is this. I have an Access 2003 database and MySQL version 3.23.53 and I want to import the data into MySQL from Access. There are steps from there, such as transferring that data onto a replica MySQL database on a webserver (that uses 3.23.53, hence I am using it too), so I can mess around with it from there. I know you guys will probably spurn me for talking about MS SQL, but I sort of knew where I was with that, scheduled DTS packages and all that allowed me to automate my process. Does MySQL have a similar thing? Sorry for so many questions at once, and thanks in advance.

Oh, I'm using a Windows system and I'm not particularly familiar with Linux, so please make any instructions easy to follow. Although I'm using windows and I think the server has phpAdmin for an interface. If someone knows how to go from MSSQL to MySQL that will work too (particularly if it means I can schedule a DTS). That way, I can import Access to MS SQL and then to MySQL.

Importing Dates Into MYSQL
I have a bunch of data to import into MySQl. One column is birthdate, stored (in Excel) as 10/11/1981 (example). When I import it into MySQl, it shows up as 0000-00-00 (hundreds of rows of this!)

Even in OpenOffice, which lets me format the date as 1981-10-11, it still doesn't import to MySQL (still shows up as all zeros). Is it like others, do I need to "encapsulate" the date (like around # signs)?

IF I set the MySQL field date to text, they import wonderfully, but the second I set that field back to date, they all go to zeros!

Importing Data Into MySQL
I've got a question about importing Microsoft Excel data (saved as a .csv) into a MySQL table. The spreadsheet in question is a record of a list of books with approximately 5000 records. The columns in Excel are as follows:
Title, Author, Publisher, Condition, Format, Price
The corresponding fields in the MySQL database are:
title, publisher_id, condition_id, format_id, price
The first question I have is about the foreign keys. All of the publisher, condition and format information is stored in a seperate table and linked to the main books table. How I am thinking of going about the insert is to enter in all the relevant publisher data to the database. Work out the id in the publisher table and do a simple search and replace in the excel file to insert the id in place of the publisher. I'll do the same for condition and format. (For those of you who think its crazy, because of the data involved it won't take much time). So that when I insert the data then the ids will be inserted. Is this a valid way of going about it?
There are two problems that arise however. The first is that the author information is stored as a many-to-many relationship as some books have more than one author. Is there any possible way of inserting the data from the .csv easily?
The second is that I would like mysql to assign automatic unique id values in an id column that would function as my primary key. No such data exists. Can this be done when importing the data - that mysql automatically assigns an id?
Any help on the above queries would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for having a look!

Importing A Database PC->MySql

What's the easiest way to do it? Do I need to recreate the database first, then import the .mbp file into it? Or is there a way to just import the .mbp file into MySQL, and it will automatically replicate the database, along with all the tables it contains?
