Different Syntax Required For Older Mysql?
I have a statement which works on one Mysql database but not another. The one which works is running version 4.1.18, the one that is not is running 4.0.24. This is the query: SELECT DISTINCT MONTH (col1), YEAR (col1) FROM (SELECT * FROM test order by col1) SORTEDDATES_TAB Is there a differnet syntax required for the different versions?

SELECT Search Query - Table Join Required? Help Please!! (PHP + MySQL)
I have a search form that has: - drop down with states (nsw, vic etc) - drop down with all business categories (retail, commercial etc) - keyword / postcode field (2000, or 'builders') The user gets results returned from the business table filtered by state (mandatory), which category is selected (mandatory) and by keyword (optional) or postcode (optional). If keyword / search phrase is given then it will do search of the keywords fields of the business table (has already been indexed) in the selected category only. If postcode it will return all businesses in that category in order of distance from the given postcode. I have 5 tables (additional fields ommitted): 'state' state_id, name 'businesses' business_id, keywords, name, postcode, state 'postcodes' fromPostcode, toPostcode, distanceKMS 'categories' category_id, name 'business2category' business_id, category_id Please dont thing i'm just pawning off my work here!! Basically, i've got this working already, but only just, and in a very long and convulted format. Its far too long to post here, but since i'm not fully versed in table joins, i've been searching individual tables (e.g. SELECT *,MATCH AGAINST etc), building arrays, searching arrays again, and then building results at the end to fit into the paginator. Now the search is taking too long to perform, and i need a leaner alternative. not to mention theres way too many lines of code, and i just know theres a better way. There must be a very simple way to achieve the following searches using table joins, can anybody please help me with 3 search examples below so i can try to understand joins better? Search 1: State + Category only Search 2: State + Category + Keyword Search 2: State + Category + Postcode If there is no postcode, the others still need to display the data filtered by distance from a default postcode of 2000. I'd really appreciate if anybody has a few minutes free to help out here, and hopefully teach me something about effective table joins and searching. I've omitted the extra fields and tables from the real structure, and just left the relevant ones above - if theres anyhing missing or not making sense please let me know and i'll fix up asap.

Local Interface To MySQL
I need to harvest data from MySQL tables. My experience is with MSSQL and Enterprise Manager. I also connect to MSSQL with Access and ODBC. I don't need to manage anything. I just need the data. What kind of interface can I use to query and save data locally? I don't see any MySQL drivers available when I try to setup an ODBC from my desktop. Can I download one somewhere?

Question Regarding MySQL Interface Options And MySQL Vs MS Access
First, there are many applications available for interacting with MySQL. One of the things that frustrated me at first was the CLI. I know that it's the foundation and understanding syntax is critical to making it all work in the end, but when dealing with large datasets, I feel that a GUI makes life easier at times. So, I started out with phpMyAdmin, seems to be 'the' geek-preferred application. I also ran into a few shareware ones here and there as well as Navicat, and I recently learned that there are 2 apps from MySQL.com for administrating the DB and creating queries. In your experience, what seems to be the best MySQL interface application? At the moment I couldn't say *exactly* what I'm looking for, but more-or-less something that will ease the headache of creating queries and managing users, tables, etc. Question #2: I have been hired to be a Web Developer, Network Admin, and Database Administrator all-in-one. We have are a retail company selling peuter goods and have a product line-up of about 100 items. The President wants a robust database to deal with everything. Right now we use MS Excel for our needs. He says it's becoming cumbersome and wants to move on. I suggested MS Access because that's exactly what it's built for, companies that have been running in Excel and want more robust control over what they're doing. But the president keeps hearing this 'MySQL' buzzword and wants a MySQL database. Fine with me, I just know Access better, that's all. I've been cramming PHP & MySQL down as fast as I can and am starting to feel more familiar with both technologies. At the moment, I feel MySQL to be more of a headache (my fault I'm sure, I just don't know it yet) But For Example: To properly normalize a DB, I sometimes have to break a table into 3 tables. The first and second are no problem, but the third 'association' table is annoying (at least doing it CLI or phpMyAdmin). See, Access, you just make 2 tables and graphically set associations very easily. So, from what you know of MySQL, do you think it would be still superior to Access seeing as we want to integrate it into osCommerce eventually and possibly some of their user contributions?

Required Fields
Just so you know I am using Delph 2007 along with MySQL, because of the many benefits of this database. How do you deal with fields that are required in MySQL? I have read "MySQL in 24 hours". I don't believe it discussed much about required fields. If there is a tutorial on this, please let me know. Thanks! :) P.S. Locking Required?
If a PHP script uses MySQL MyISAM tables for a table that may have concurrent updates/inserting do we manually have to lock/unlock the table using queries in the PHP code or will MySQL internal locking take care of this for us? I assumed that if a PHP script has many users using it at once, it will be sending many queries to MySQL at the same time, but MySQL should on its own queue these queries and perform them without conflict correct? I assumed table locking queries were if we needed to lock/unlock tables for specific situations?

Locking Required During Update
if a update query is executed with concurrent access to the database is table locking always recommended? i am thinking specifically about updates that do not take into account the value that is already stored in the DB. let me give an example to explain. a person wants to update the salary of someone we could write: Update table1 Set salary = "30" Where personid = 5; in that case the user is not reading the salary value eg they are not doing salary = salary + 100 so is there a need to do any locking if multiple users do the same thing say using a thin client? i cant see the possibility of a lost update error occurring.

Time Required By Database
Is there a way for me to print out the sum of all the time required by the mysql database? In most cases, I connect to the database once on a page view and then utilize multiple select, insert, etc. statements before disconnecting. Before disconnecting, can I select the total time required by the database (and not perl) in that session? Even getting the time required by one select statement would be useful, too.

Help Required Improving Query
the following query has been giving me problems. My users are reporting that credit is going down automatically and download counts seem to be overwritten with other downloads. I'm thinking using JOINS would be better, but I'm not sure which how best to structure it. Password Required To Unzip Connector/J
I just installed MySQL on WinXP and immediately tried installing Connector/J. While the downloaded file is unzipping, the process stops and says File Callable Statement Regressio... is password protected. Please enter password in the box below. What passowrd do they want? MySQL is just the language that the database is programmed in, in a nutshell is that right? If so, it's not like Microsoft Access where you can create a user interface so the user can input data and apply queries to data etc. These are my assumptions, so my question is: Is there an open source application that applies a user interface to a MySQL database so a user can do these things?

End User Interface
My goal is to set up a database to track our inspection data at our company. Currently, we are using Excel spreadsheets to make inspection reports. I would like to be able to get this information into a database so that a technician can set up the inspection plan before the inspector gets the part (the inspection plan would include the Customer Name, Part No., Revision, Items to inspect, etc.) Then when the inspector receives the part, they can pull up the inspection plan and enter the dimensional values obtained for each attribute on say six or ten parts and print an inspection report. Then this data can be sorted and viewed in different ways. We have three Windows 95 computers and three Windows 98 computers we are currently using on an ethernet network. I am thinking of using MySql, Apache and PHP to set this up. Would there be a simpler way to create an end user interface to MySql other than using PHP and Apache?

MS-Windows Front End Interface
Is there an MS-Windows front end interface for mySQL ? I'm thinking of an MS-Access sort of approach for basic database configuration and maintenance. Maybe there's a back door way to ODBC myself from MS-access to mysql on a Windows system ? Does Mysql have an ODBC front end I can get in through ? Any pointers to some directions ? I plan to use perl/my-sql for web work. But, it seems like a _lot_ of work to build the databases and populate them via mysql commands. Graphical Interface Hangs
In the older version of mysql, when I pressed browse, I could see the content of the table. If I ran a query, such as select * from table, it would scroll out the result. Now, with the newer version, all it does is hang. Is there some setting I'm missing that needs to be changed? This was newly installed on our apple server.

I am developing an online app that helps many editors review articles, check for errors, add new articles, etc. The editors are used to using Word to help them go through several articles at once. Because of this, I'm hoping to figure out a way to allow several persons access to their content on a MySQL database online via their local install of MS Word. I have only read the book by DuBois and used samples at the command line. I would like to use this for work. I am avoiding the IT push to use Microsoft Access. I have 10 people in our group who need to share data (now about 50 excell spreadsheets). What I am really looking for is a GUI that can get me most of the way there. I have a problem connecting to sql and can't find anything on the net to solve the problem. I just installed mysql on linux. If I open a terminal, su to root, then type "mysql", I am able to connect to the server and run my queries. If I exit out of su so that I am my own id (baisley) and type "mysql", I get this error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/home/data/mysql/mysql.sock' (13) Any idea why? mysql.sock has full permissions (read/write/execute), so it should be accessable by user baisley. If I am baisley and I run "mysql -u mysql" (as mysql is the user that the RPM set up), it will connect. What I would like to be able to do is run this without having to be user mysql all the time. How do I go about setting that up, or is it better to run all my queries/make tables as 1 user?

Hosting Package Environment: ASP.NET ver 2 MySQL 5.0 FP Extensions 2003 Progression: Developed Website Outline Developed Database in Access2003 Migrated AccessDB to MySQL @ Hosting Service using Migration Tool. Can connect using MySQL Admin tools and run queries fine and all data, relations etc. are there. PROBLEM: (The heart of the matter) Starting simple, created GridView Control using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, a few glitches here and there, used the MySQL Connector/ODBC v5.00.11 followed instructions. Can see database in Database Connections Window but when I try to connect the GridView Control to it I get: "Database schema could not be retrieved for this connection. Please make sure the connection settings are correct and that the database is online. ERROR [HY000][MySQL][MyODBC 5.00.11][MySQL] 2006 MySQL server has gone away" Had thought that "Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express" might be messing with the ODBC driver so thought to download the .NET Connector. That's when it all went bad. The documentation does not say how to install or use the connector or where to put the files. It seems to assume that these bits of information are common knowledge and I suppose that if I had kept up with the technology it might be. But alas I didn't and it Isn't and It Don't work.

How To Configure MySQL ODBC Driver To Connect To A Mysql Server On My Own Side Of The Router?
Using MS Access, I have attached to MySQL servers in other states and other countries on the other side of my router. But when I use the MySQL ODBC driver 3.51 to connect to a MySQL server on my own LAN, the driver tells me it cannot make the connection.
