Passwords, Permissions, And Blank Users
I have Apache 2 server, PHP5, and the latest MySQL installed on my system. I'm currently reading PHP and MySQL for Dummies (I told you I was a newbie) and trying to work through a few of the examples. One thing I noticed when I looked at the "users" table in the "mysql" database is a blank user with all privileges on localhost. I deleted that entry, set a password for my "root" account, and created another account with a non-blank password.
The problem I am having is that I am trying to connect to the database as "root" with a blank password, and it's still working. I then tried a blank user, and it worked. I tried a random assortment of letters and numbers, and it worked.

Can't Add New Users & Passwords To Grant Table
I am running MySQL 4.1.7 on my Windows XP system. I can create databases, ect. on the command line, but when I try to run a PHP script I receive the 'Access denied' error message. I have tried using the Grant command to add a new user but nothing comes up when I show SHOW GRANT except the root user. How do I add the new users for running the PHP script?
Backing Up Users Permissions
I was wondering how I can backup user rights to a database that I have. I am able to create a dump of the database but how can I backup the user rights.
Setting Permissions For Local Users
I am wondering if anyone can help me.I am installing GPTEngine locally, I am using using Apache Webserver.Everything goes well until it is time for the engine(software) to connect to SQL.I get an error cannot connect to database. Im not quite sure what the problem is. The software says I need to have full table priviliges, not entirely sure how to do this. I created the database but it is up to the software to create the tables. It will just not connect to SQL.I find the documentation on the MYSql sight confusing can anyone give me any pointers, and point me to a website that has easier to follow instructions?
Create Users Table For Users To Log On Or ...?
I'm pretty new to MySQL, what I was wondering is, for web systems that you need to login to, do developers generally create a users table and store all their users in there, or do they create users such as the root user in mysql ? If so, how do you add extra fields such as firstname last name etc and how would you go about putting them into groups?
Passwords
1. I know in mySql you need a username and a password to access a database. However, can you set a username and password (or even just a password) to access a table or a row? 2. Is there a way you can set a database so you can only add data? 3. is there a way I can have people access values to a database (php) without using a password? 4. is there a way to set up diffrent users (with diffrent permissions) for accessing mySQL data? 5. Any comments about how I can get alot of people accessing a database, from diffrent websites, with keeping i as secure as possible?
Passwords
i've written a windows based from end for a mysql database that will work across a local intranet, it stores usernames and passwords for a reporting system, what is the best way to store the passwords int he db? i.e encrypted or?
Passwords & DBI/DBD
I installed the current stable release of MySQL from RPMs. I used the client and server packages. After installing the server package, the RPM printed a note saying I should run two commands. I only got the first one, which was # ./mysqladmin -u root --password I assume this gave the root user a password. I then downloaded and proceeded to compile the Perl DBI and DBD:mysql packages. The DBI package installed fine after I also installed the "MySQL-devel" RPM. Code:
Passwords
I want to store some passwords in a MySQL table. Is there any way of preventing someone using say COntrolcentre from viewing the passwords.
Passwords
I am just starting out using mySQL. I created some databases and tables and installed mySQLcc to ease my usage. After about 4 months, I've needed to make some changes that needed root access. I appearantly wrote down the wrong password so I couldn't make any changes. In the process of trying to change the password I think I changed it again and unsynced mySQL and mySQLcc because now I can't access any of the databases with any user. Although I can still open mySQLcc, it can't connect to the database. I get access denied no matter what I do. Is there a way to clear the passwords and start over? Where are the passwords kept? Or do I have to remove mySQL and reinstall it and start over?
Transferring Passwords
I tried doing a search but did not find the answer I was looking for. I just redesigned the database that I had created a few months ago. I broke my one single table up into multiple tables. My problem is that in my old large table I had a password column that is populated by using Password(). Is there a way for me to transfer the info from that column to my new broken down table set? I did not create a new database when I broke up the large table, I just built my new tables around it so they are all stored in the same database. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. Is it possible for me to just copy and paste the info from one of the fields into the new table? Or will that break the encryption?
Passwords For Myadmin
I am looking for a way to setup a username/password to myadmin. I made the mistake of showing other the website for admin work and now they are messing it all up.
Inserting Passwords Into DB
I have a couple of questions concerning the insertion of encrypted passwords into a mysql database (4.0) first, some admins seem to think it's a good idea to feed the password in plaintxt to the db and have the db encrypt and store it. I tend to think this is less secure seeing as there is no seperation between the data and the encrypt/decrypt so therefore encrypt the password beforehand and I want to insert nand retreive it that way. What type should I be using with the store, and what's the best way to store and retrieve it with that type?
Passwords / Authentication
I have just started messing around with MySQL and something I find weird is that we connecting using localhost, if I supply the password, it will not authenticate...if I leave the password off, it's fine.If I connect from another machine, it requires the password or it will not authenticate. Is that normal?
Transferred DB, Now Passwords Not Working..
We just switched hosting companies and transferred 3 of our DB's from the old server to the new. Everything seemed to go alright. Our sites are reading from the DB's however none of the users from our DB can log into the website. When a user signs up to the site we use the MYSQL PASSWORD() function to enter the users passwords into the DB.
How To Encrpyt Passwords In Database?

Encripting Passwords In Mysql
Is there any way to encript a password in a mysql database, so that if anyone looks in the database, they wont know peoples passwords?
Encoding Passwords In MySQL
I am developing a database application in which I store usernames and passwords. Naturally I want to store the passwords in an encrypted form. However, just like you see in many web applications, I want to be able to email the users password back to them should they forget their old password. I looked at how to store the password data in MySQL and they recommend using MD5 or SHA. Both of these appear to be one way encryption routines. IOW once I encrypt and store the users password there is no way to unencrypt it. How can I store passwords in my SQL database such that I can convert them back to plain text when the user requests them?

Problem With (hashed) Passwords
I my program I have my own login form from which I forward username and password to (ADO)ConnectionString, and then make Connection Active. But, MySQL Server reports error 'Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client' Newest version of server (and client) is installed. Help says that server uses hashed password when user is attemp to connect. How can I provide hashed password from my application?
User Accounts With Passwords
I am able to connect to the database using users that are not password protected. After updating privileges to use passwords and changing login info(in a php document) I recieve the following error from the php document: Warning: mysql_query(): Access denied for user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in c:inetpubwwwrootgindex.php on line 9 Warning: mysql_query(): A link to the server could not be established in c:inetpubwwwrootgindex.php on line 9 I am attempting to connect as 'test'@'localhost' with the password 'test'. If I remove the password, I can connect no problem.
Non-blank Fields
Is there a way to select all non-blank fields when doing a select statement in SQL? For example, I want to run the query "Select * from <tablename> where username = <username>" The result set contains many columns that are completely blank, as the database I'm working with contains over 100 fields. Is there a way to tell it not to display those blank columns in the result set?
Zero = Blank = Space
how I can change it if possible: mysql> select count(*) from property where number = 0 and number = "" and number = " " and number = " "; +----------+ | count(*) | +----------+ | 43 | +----------+
First Blank Row In A Column
How do you get the first blank row in a column. I have tried select * from table where column = ''; but this is not working.
Blank Fields
In the table for my fields even if I pick the option "do not alow null". I noticed when I save the tables with out entering anything in the fields it let me save with out promting me and saying "null not allowed" I belive in some other databases if you have picked "not null" for a field and try to save it with out entering anything it will not let you save.
Security For Shared Server.xml Passwords
I have an ISP that has the server.xml in a shared environment. The server.xml file is where my password is available for database access under connection pooling. I really would like to use connection pooling. Does anyone know how I can protect my password from being viewed by others using the same server.xml file? I cannot get the administrator to change the protection of the file because others in the shared environment need to be able to view it.
Hide Mysql Usernames And Passwords
I'm trying to have people access a secure mysql database. If they get to a certain webpage, they have clearance to access the database, and we have one password and one username (that the users do not know). Does anyone know how to have it so the people cannot see the cgi script to access the database?
User Passwords Lost On Reboot
Server 2003 | IIS6 | MySQL 4.1.14-nt-max | phpMyAdmin 2.6.4-pl3 Apart from root, I have only 6 databases and whenever I reboot the server, I have to reset the passwords on 4 db's (using phpMyAdmin). Checking the mysql db, user table I note that the 4 that are causing problems have an asterix *preceding the encrypted password. The passwords that do not change were set with the help of a friend using SQL statements.
Mod_auth_mysql Or Mysql Usernames And Passwords
I'm writing a web app that needs a login page. I'm doing the dev on a windows box although the final version will go on a Linux box. I can't find any versions of mod_auth_Mysql precompiled for windows and have no idea about compiling c.source on windows (or anything to do it with). Is there a good reason I shouldn't store hashed password in MySQL and call them from Python scripts instead of using the apache auth module directly?
People Store Passwords In Database
i used to store the password in database using md5() function but there is no way to retrieve the password back. Now i want to know that - is it standard and secure way to store password? is there any other technique to store password so i can retrive it back?
Parent_id: NULL, Blank Or 0
My categories table looks like this: category_id category_name category_parent_id custom_category_name custom_category_parent_id I will be using COALESCE to get the first non NULL value when I query category_name, category_parent_id, custom_category_name and custom_category_parent_id like so: MySQL SELECT category_id, COALESCE(custom_category_name, category_name) AS category_name, COALESCE(custom_category_parent_id, category_parent_id) AS category_parent ... I have set the default value of custom_category_name and custom_category_parent_id to NULL. category_id and category_name will always be present. But what should I set for category_parent_id? Sometimes it won't have a value (when the category is a parent category) and sometimes it will have a value. Should I set category_parent_id's default value as NULL or 0 or blank?
Blank Username In Mysql Db
Using a Virtual Private Server -UNIX & Apache 1.3.22 & mysql 3.23.46 I was able to create the mysql root password, however the system will not let me create the admin password (which is supposed to be the same as my account name). When I checked the database to see the current names, this is what I got below: Code:
Eliminating Blank Values
I have a database randomly scattered with 'NULL' values, being a newbie to mysql, I was wondering if there was a single command to replace all 'null' values with a string 'no data'. all the fields are set to hold 255 character strings.
Ignoring Blank Fields
Im having a problem where im allowing the user to identify a row by 1 of 2 unique fields. The problem i have is that my current query states to either take a OR b... so my query looks like this. a = $a OR b = $b Now these unique fields can also contain a result of null. Which means that im returned with more than 1 result when only 1 of the unique fields is entered. Is there a way of escaping results that contain null in either of the fields?
Test For A Null Or Blank
Please look at this sql: SELECT name, visual_no, type_aid, aid_topic1, aid_topic2, aid_topic3, length, date_format(when_made, '%m-%d-%y') as when_made, reserved, date_format(res_beg, '%m-%d-%y') as res_beg, date_format(res_end, '%m-%d-%y') as res_end, notes, no_check, check_out, ge.genreid, gen_short_description, sb.subjectid, sub_short_description, specificid, spe_short_description FROM aids ad, tbl_genre ge, tbl_subjects sb, tbl_specific_subject ss WHERE aid_id=1280 AND (aid_topic1 = ge.genreid OR aid_topic1 is null) AND (aid_topic2 = sb.subjectid OR aid_topic2 is null) AND (aid_topic3 = specificid OR aid_topic2 is null) This is for an audio visual library (dvd, vhs, etc.) The database for record 1280 (and many others) contains in the genreid a number (it has data in other words). aid_topic2 and and aid_topic3 are either blank or have the word [NULL] in the field. I am using MySQLCC, if this matters. This SQL brings back a cartesian product. if I just keep the SQL without the ORs it will not bring back a row because there isn't always an equality between the main table and the lookup tables. Sometimes the main table has a row that has no value in the topics and therefore does not equal the lookup table. I did not design the table. I inherited it.
Blank Date Field
How do you determine if a Date field is blank. In my Sql statement I only want records who's date field is blank (i.e. checking for only open invoices where Date_Paid = '' ...still open ...it doesn't work when I use that syntax)
Switched To 4.1, Now Passwords Work Differently - How To Adjust?
I switched from MySQL 3.23 to 4.1. I used Pear DB but now, it doesn't seem to work so I switched to Pear MDB2. I used MySQL Control Center to add a new system user to the MySQL user table but the password was like an nd5 hash instead of the old 16 character password in version 3.23. When I try to connect it indicates it can not connect.
Binary Column Types / Hashed Passwords
I'm building an asp.net application using MySQL as the database. I've created a table to store usernames and passwords. During user creation and authentication - i'm presenting the db with a hashed password value. When a hashed password is stored in a db - how should it appear in the table? In the MySQL table I'm using to store username and passwords, it appears as system.byte[]. The data type is defined as varchar(16), binary. The field is not behaving as it should during authentication - as long at I enter a valid username, the system authenticates me despite a correct or incorrect password value. Can anyone help me to define the appropriate column type? My application works fine w/ MS SQL but fails w/ MySql. In MS SQL the field is described as:[PWD] [binary] (16) NULL
Packed Passwords In Command Line Programs
I think this is a trivial newbie question but can only be answered by a guru. In command line programs, why should passwords be packed with the parameter name? For example for mysqlimport one would write the command like that: mysqlimport -u user -ppass Why not just mysqlimport -u user -p pass ?
When Restarting The Service, Blank Password
When I stop the service and restart the server, it takes blank/wrong password for any user account including root. Only after I reset the password for root, then the passwords for all the other accounts work fine. What is causing this problem? I don't have the root with % host. And all users under user table in mysql database has passwords set.
Blank Password When Restarting The Machine
I mainly use MySQL Administrator to create/update table/users/etc. And I noticed that whenever I restart my machine (Windows 2003 Server with MySQL database running) and login to the MySQL Administrator, it takes blank or wrong password for any user account including root. So I end up resetting my root password. Does anyone know why it keeps happening?
Blank Columns Or Separate Tables
I have a form with 8 fields, 4 of which are required and 4 are not. Usually if a field isn't required I would create a separate table for it rather than having a blank value in the table where required values would go. In this case, I'm not sure if I should put all the not required fields in one table or separate tables. Since any one of them can be or not be blank. I'm trying to find a balance between normalization and practicality for the database, as well as programming. So, are columns with blank values acceptable to a certain number? Are 4 separate tables too many, so that there aren't any blanks in a column if they were in one table?
Statement Results In Blank Page
I'm constructing a blog for my site. After I got nowhere trying to automatically configure dd-mm-yyyy dates on the fly, I decided just to write the dates manually and order the posts by automatically incremented id instead. However, in constructing my monthly archive pages I've come up against a problem. Here is the PHP I'm using to get the info from the database: $blog = mysql_query ("SELECT title, content, date FROM blog WHERE date IN ('August 2005') ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 10") or die(mysql_error()); The date column in my table is VARCHAR and all the entries so far contain the characters August 2005 but all I get is a blank page. I'm using this while loop to display the results: while ($entry = mysql_fetch_array($blog)){ echo ' <p class="blogdate"> '. $entry['date'] .' </p> <h2>'. $entry['title'] .'</h2> <div class="blog"> '. $entry['content'] .' </div> '; }
Enter Null In A Blank Field
How would I enter a Null in a blank field from a query. I have several fields in a table that may or maynot have information in them. I need to export all those fields, I want to have all the blank fields filled with Null so that when I export the table info I can change the Null to another value.
Removing Blank Tabs In Rows
Some of my earlier rows (Database is about 360mb) have blank tabs between text, i can I modify each row and delete the tabs so the size is smaller? I searched php manual didn't find a helpful function, maybe someone else has done this?

Saving Storage Space On Blank Entries In DB
If I have a table, of say.... people, with their names, ages, addresses etc., and some lines in the table have the ages BLANK, how do I make sure that the blank fields are not taking up disk space? Does OPTIMIZE TABLE do this, or is another command?
How To Change Cell Values From NULL To BLANK?
In the result of a SELECT statement, how can you change cell values from NULL to BLANK? The following does NOT do it: SET fieldname = ' ' WHERE fieldname IS NULL Also, for colums with a DATE data type, I want to change 0000-00-00 to BLANK. For for colums with a numeric data type such as DOUBLE, I want to change 00.00 to BLANK. Again, the above doesn't work. How can I blank those fields?
