Starting In Binary Mode

I have installed mysql 5.1 onto one of our Redhat Enterprise 3 test boxes. Theres nothing particularly important on the box as far as I am aware.

Anyhow I stopped the server yesterday, with the idea of starting it in Binary Mode. I am looking into how we can do the backups for the system. Since we are due to inherit some mysql databases to look after. Code:

Starting Binary Logging
I want to start binary logging, but can't seem to get it working!
I have put:

[mysqld]
log-bin

into my.cnf which MySQL appears to be using.I can't see anything else in the manual or internet which mentions anything else I required to do - am I just missing something?I am using clean installs of Win2003 and MySQL 5.0.18. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am totally stuck until I can sort this out.

How To Save Binary Data Into A Binary Field
I want to save some binary data into MYSQL.

dim s as string
s=chr(0)&chr(1) chr(3) & chr(6) & chr(7)
conn.execute "INSERT INTO test values ('" & s & "')"

The field in the table test is binary. The odbc returns an error but using the query browser the query ends good. Any idea?

Key1 Without Binary And Key2 With Binary
I have two search keyes, key1 and key2.

The following is where clause.

where

say like '%#key1#%'
and
say like binary '%#key2#%'
I have to use binary for key2 like the above.

Now I like to make the following where clause.

say like '%#key1#%#key2#%'
The where clause above will retrieve all records which has #key1# and #key2# in that order.

My problem is in the use of binary, i.e I have to use binary for key2.

I can make it like the following for using binary.

say like binary '%#key1#%#key2#%'

But the code above makes not only key2 but also key1 bianry.

Key1 doesn't need bianry but key2 needs bianry.

How can I make the where clause key1 without binary and key2 with binary?

The following would-be code doesn't work correctly, but it'll show what I want.

woudl-be code

say like '%#key1(non-binary)#%#key2(binary)#%'

How To Find The Mode?
I have a table with 80,000 records in it, each with a field named 'referral_id'.

I need a way to find which number is the mode in the field 'referral_id', as well as the 2nd mode (2nd most recurring #), 3rd mode.....nth mode.

I know this is going to be a pretty inefficient query (but I have no other options at this point).

Batch Mode
I understand that to use batch mode it is necessary to put the commands you want to run into a file before telling MySQL to read its input from the file, but how do I create the file and what do I create it in? Also, I'm not really sure how you would then tell MySQL to read it.

NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES Sql Mode
we have a table which contains file paths. Some of the clients are on Windows machines so the paths are like for example

C:Documents and SettingsFredlahlah

if I do the following query

select count(*) from table_name where path like 'C:Documents%'
result is zero rows

change query to
select count(*) from table_name where path like 'C:Documents%'
result is 37 rows (correct answer)

As far as I have understood if I set the SQL mode to be NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES I should get the correct answer in both cases above.

Please dont suggest I double backslash - I cant in our real example.

I DONT

any clues anyone?

STRICT_TRANS_TABLES SQL Mode
I have been using MySQL in a windows environment now for a couple of years. I have used 4.x and now have been using 5.0.

I often had problems with v5 and eventualy tracked it down to the SQL mode STRICT_TRANS_TABLES which by default is enabled when using the MySQL MSI installer.

I have read the documentation at MySQL website on SQL modes but I am still trying to understand what this SQL mode is/does exactly.

Can someone explain this SQL mode to me? What is the purpose of this mode and how does it differ from default SQL mode used in 4.x?

Strict Mode
I changed to strict mode (STRICT_ALL_TABLES), and it's okay.
Only problem is that I would like to allow to insert characters into
the integer columns.

Example, before I changed to the strict mode, I was allowed to insert characters into the INT field, and mysql convert them to the 0.

Batch Mode
I want to execute the queries wriiten in a .sql file in a single attempt using the batch process of mysql.Since I don't have a good grip over the database systems, I am confused how should I go for it..

Using Batch Mode
can someone show me the way of using batch mode?
what is the syntax of it?
what should i do for the first step?
can someone tell me about that?

Excuting MySQL In DOS Mode
I am in DOS mode. ( I don't know how to do in DOS mode.)

It shows like the below.

mysql> select * from mysql
->

If I press enter key, it produces "-> ," I like to stop generating "->,
and execute the code "select * from mysql"

how can I exeute the code "select * from mysql" and show the result?

Mysql Access In Dos Mode
(1) I am using XP.
(2) I installed mysql, apache, and PHP a few days ago.
(3) there is phpMyAdmin folder in "htdocs" folder of my Apache.

I can't connect to mysql in dos mode.

I entered "mysql" in (C:/mysql/bin/).

Then, It says "ERROR1045: access denied for user 'ODBC@127.0.0.1'<using password: NO>"

(Q1)what does that mean "ODBC" in your guess?

(Q2)what is "127.0.01"?
It seems like "IP". but my IP was different number as I checked.

So, I enter "mysql -uroot -p".
then, It ask "password".

Because I created a new user and the password with the phpAdmin tool,
I entered the password.

It says "ERROR1045: Access denied for user 'root@127.0.0.1'<using password: YES>"

(Q)Do you see any problems in my approach to learning mysql and phpAdmin?

(Q) why does it deny my access to it?

(Q) what should I do for the access?

Unix Socket Vs TCP Mode
Our mysql database always run smoothness, but there have a strange question always happy.
We retrieve content using unix socket mode is always Correct, using TCP mode sometime will meet no return Error. What's wrong with TCP mode?

For example, We need to retrieve content from table Tab_Memo, the condition with ‘large’ is over 20KB, with ‘small’ is about ‘5KB’.

Using unix socket mode:
----------------------------------
mysql -u root -p password
1、select * from Tab_Memo where name = ‘large’; // The result is Correct.
2、select * from Tab_Memo where name = ‘small’; //The result is Correct.

Using unix socket mode
----------------------------------
1、select * from Tab_Memo where name = ‘large’; // NO result return.
2、select * from Tab_Memo where name = ‘small’; //The result is Correct.

Output In Sql Mode Of GNU Emacs
I am using WinXP, GNU Emacs 23, MySQL 5.
When I start a mysql process with `sql-mysql' in emacs, no output is
displayed in the buffer until I quit or kill the process.

After I add the following line into the initialization file of emacs,

(setq sql-mysql-options '("-C" "-t" "-f" "-n"))

the output comes out, but the status line still doesn't show up. (e.g.
1
row in set (0.02 sec))

What's worse, I try to log the session with `T logfile', but no
logfile is generated.

Batch Mode Problem
I am having a problem with 2 sql statements in 1 batch file. Only the last
statement executes. If I separate the statements into individual files they
work fine.

Are you only allowed 1 statement per file?

Here is the contents of the batch file:
insert into monlog (monlog_locno, monlog_custno, monlog_time,
monlog_inputdate, monlog_errno) select loc_no, loc_custno,
(hour(now())*60)+minute(now()), now(), 200 from loc where
loc_next+29<(hour(now())*60)+minute(now())+30 and loc_errno>=200 and
loc_errno<=249;
update loc set loc_errno='250' where
loc_next+29<(hour(now())*60)+minute(now())+30;

Strict Mode And Defaults - Best Practice?
Assuming I have MySQL 5 in strict mode, what is the best practice for dealing with varchar fields (for instance) where no specific default value need be set? Is it best to simply make such a field nullable?

Lock In Share Mode / For Update
In v. 5.0.x you cannot lock rows if the query doesn't use PK or UK. (BUG #12205)
Does this also apply to v. 5.1 ? I have to know, because I want to migrate from 5.0.4 to 5.1.11.

InnoDB Lock In Share Mode
We've just setup a new webspace account with Demon Internet in the UK and
it has PHP/mySQL services

I'm just testing the InnoDB an am having a problem with the following
statement

SELECT * FROM invtest LOCK IN SHARE MODE

Which gives the following error:-

Error

SQL-query :

SELECT *
FROM invtest
LOCK IN SHARE MODE LIMIT 0 , 30

MySQL said:

You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds
to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'LIMIT 0,
30' at line 1

I can't seem to find anything about this limit clause/parameter in any of
the help files. Demon say 'Dunno mate we just provide the service !!!'

See Feedback Message On Batch Mode
I wrote a perl program to update/insert mysql
database. It worked fine but I could not see the feedback message to
show how many rows updated or inserted. I can see that if I issue SQL
commands interactively.

BTW, what's the easiest way to check return code from SQL commands in
perl. I use korn shell script to invoke perl script that does SQL
stuff. I need to pass the return code back to shell script.

Useful Relevance With FullText Boolean Mode
Show full header Is there any way to make relevance when using boolean mode more useful? If not, are there plans in the Fulltext development "todo" for making it useful?

I'm thinking of just counting the keyword occurences in records with a PHP script somehow and using that to order the records somehow. Or doing a non boolean fulltext search w/relevance first and then melding that in somehow with a boolean search.

See my results below, my "peeps" are asking me for relevance/ranking - what do I do?

FULLTEXT Search IN BOOLEAN MODE
SELECT id, student_first_name, student_last_name, major, minor ,
MATCH(major, minor) AGAINST ('"mechanical engineering"')
AS score
FROM students
WHERE MATCH(major, minor) AGAINST ('"mechanical engineering"' IN
BOOLEAN MODE)
GROUP BY id, student_first_name, student_last_name, major, minor, score
ORDER BY score DESC

This query in MySQL 4.1.12 using MyISAM tables with FULLTEXT index that
maps to student.major, student.minor, produces results that do this:

1) Matches major/minor "Mechanical Engineering"
2) Matches major/minor "Mechanical"
3) Matches major/minor "Mechanic"
4) Matches major/minor "Engineering"
5) Matches major/minor "Engineer"

I was under the impression, according to this MySQL book I have "MySQL
(Third Edition", Paul DuBois, Developer's Library), in Chapter 2, page
197 that if you group your search keyword in double quotes, you will
get only the results within double quotes IN BOOLEAN MODE.

Apparently this is not happening.

Tabs Missing In Batch Mode
in a shell script of mine I'm executing a mysql SELECT in batch mode. I
want to use the return value for other sql statements.
The problem I'm facing is that the tabs, which seperate the columns
from each other, are missing in the output.
What am I doing wrong?

#!/bin/sh
QUERY="select id, i.handle from idmap i, person p where
i.handle=p.handle and email="$1""
mysql mydatabase -pmypassword -N -B -e "$QUERY" | while read line ; do
personid=$(echo $line | cut -f1) ; handle=$(echo $line | cut -f2 ) ;
echo $handle ; done ;

MySQL: Fulltext Mode And Searching More Than One Field
some quick background: I'm using MySQL 4.1.18. This is my first experience with MySQL (or any database system for that matter). I do have programming experience.

Ok, now my table:

restaurant_db
|-------------------------------------------|
| Name[varchar(200)] | City[varchar(200)] |
|-------------------------------------------|
| Jade Palace | Laguna Niguel |
| Jade Palace | Aliso Viejo |
|-------------------------------------------|
Basically I'm storing restaurants inside my database. Each restaurant has two fields: name and city. In the example above, there are two jade palaces (restaurants): one in Laguna Niguel and one in Aliso Viejo (cities).

Now I have fulltextmode working perfectly. Both 'Name' & 'City' are fulltext indexed. But here's my problem. Consider the following query:

SELECT name, city, MATCH (Name,City) AGAINST
('jade, laguna') AS score
FROM restaurant_db WHERE MATCH (Name,City) AGAINST
('jade, laguna')
The above code is stripped straight from the MySQL dev docs and modified for my purposes.

Results:

Jade Palace Aliso Viejo 0.3876339495182
Jade Palace Laguna Niguel 0.3876339495182
From the above, one can conclude that it's simply searching one field at a time and once there's a match, it doesn't bother looking for matches in other fields. In the above case, once it found a match for 'jade' (name field), it didn't bother looking into matching 'laguna' (city field).

My desire is to have the above search results reversed so that the Laguna Niguel Jade Palace comes before the Aliso Viejo one by instructing MySQL to search all fields rather than terminate upon the first match. Furthermore (this is probably obvious), I would like MySQL to weigh results with the most matches higher than those with less matches.

Not Seeing MySQL Prompt In Emacs Sql-mode On Windows...
I've been using emacs sql-mode for some time now (with MySQL) and love it.
I've used it on both Windows and FreeBSD (sadly I do most of my work on
Windows though) and have noticed that the output the prompt and output on
the Windows machine isn't displayed, but is displayed on the FreeBSD
machine......

Unable To Get BOOLEAN Mode Working With Wildcard Matching
I have successfully been able to perform a SELECT query where if someone enters a partial word from the beginning of the word, it will match it correctly from the DB. Such as.

Appl = Apple
Telep = Telephone

SELECT * FROM knowledge WHERE MATCH (subject,question,answer1) AGAINST ('+Appl* +Telep*' IN BOOLEAN MODE) ORDER BY catageory, pkey LIMIT 0,50

This search finds all matches which contain Appl and Telep using the * in the search string.

However I am unable to create a SELECT query which is able to find words which are either the end of a word or something in between. Such as.

ppl or ephon

If I don't use BOOLEAN mode and do a simple search which is something like this
%ppl% it works fine.

Just Starting
I'm interested in developing an application using MYSQL. I've been out of the developer market for quite a while, but my background is mostly Oracle based technology with a lot of exposure to object, Java and XML.
What tools are in favor these days for use in...
1 - Modeling an application (data, object, process, services....) as well as generating the application.
2 - End user design for web based applications
3 - Administration tools to monitor what's going on
4 - Debugging tools
5 - Documentation

Int Field Starting With 00
I have a database and in the one table I have a field where I want to insert a numerical value starting with two zeros and then numbers after. I have tried INT and VARCHAR and both eliminate the 00 in the front and give me the rest of the number when I insert them. Why is this?

Starting Auto_increment At Zero
Can an auto_increment field be started at 0? Javascript counts from 0 and I would like to not have to subtract 1 from the numbers I get out of my table. If anybody knows how to start things at zero that would be cool.

Starting MYSQL On A Mac
I feel quite stupid I cannot seem to get MYSQL to even run on my Mac (OS X 10.4)

I have installed MYSQL and then went to terminal and entered

cd /usr/local/mysql

then

sudo ./bin/mysqld_safe

then my password as prompted

which is followed by

Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data

- at this point as it just seems to stop

What next? I have tried entering mysql -u grifkerry -p but nothing happens! I have left it for a while but still nothing.

Starting MySQL
I need to transfer a database from one computer to another. Both computers are Macintoshes running OS X Panther. Both computers are running MySQL through localhost. The computer to which I am transferring the database has MySQL up and running perfectly fine.

The computer from which I want to get the database is able to query the database through a web application using Perl but when I try to run MySQL from the Unix command line using the following text: "mysql -h localhost -u root -p" I get the following response "-sh: mysql: command not found."

As far as I know, MySQL is installed correctly on this machine (I would assume it has to be in order for the web application to access the database through Perl and MySQL). If I can start and run MySQL, I know that I can dump the database using the "mysqldump" command. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I need to do to get the mysql command to execute correctly so that I can run the program?

Starting The Server
I've had my Instance starting whenever I startup my computer, which was working fine, until now.Every time I try to start it from the MySQL Administrator.I've tried to start the sertvice and It just goes right back to stopped and gived the log message, "Trying to start the server ...

Server could not be started."How can I start the instance or find out what's going wrong?

Starting Problem
I run Windows XP, Apache 2.0.54 (these are working fine), and have just installed MySQL 4.1. And i want to say I have the checked the included manual for clues, to why MySQL won't start on this machine. I get this error message when trying to start the server with:

C:ProgramMySQLMySQL Server 4.1in>mysqld --console
InnoDB: Error: log file .ib_logfile0 is of different size 0 10485760 bytes

Where do i find the .cnf-file that is mentioned?

Starting Mysql
I used to have an older version of Mysql (4.0) that I started by starting
Winmysqladmin. Now I replaced this with the newest version: 4.1.12 and that
doesn't have Winmysqladmin. After some experimentation I found out that
MYSQLD.EXE seems to start mysql. I can then use phpMyAdmin.

However, my own application still does not work (I can log in, but my
queries give no results). A possible explanation is that I selected the
UTF-8 fontset.

I would like to have advice of what causes this problem and how I can solve
this. I a using Windows ME.

Starting Up - Mysql_send.php
I've gotten to the point in the book where it tells me to configure mysql_send.php. It wants me to put in the host name, user name, and password.

Now, when I set up MySQL, I had the host as "localhost", and set up a simple username and password. I set this up on my desktop. My questions are:

1. Which host does this refer to - my computer or the server where my website is? Which is the correct entry?

2. Same question on the username and password - what is it referring to? website or my computer?

I started making tables of my data. I have a very basic idea of the fields, but when I complete a table, I get an error message when it executes the command to make the table. What is this about?

Starting Mysql
I am using window xp, I installed mysql 4.0 and it was working fine.
last week, I uninstalled mysql 4.0 and install 4.1 and it's no longer starting.

before, error message said, "mysql failed start, wait 30 then try again"
then I messed around with it. the error message is gone

right now, it doesn't start, it doesn't give me any error message and I can't even get mysql 4.0 working.

Mysql Not Starting
I had to reload mysql 4.0.17 on to a Fedora Core machine that was previously
working in the same configuration. Now though I can't get the server to run
with the either of the following commands:

../mysql.server start - the command line reappears with no error but no
running process in the system monitor
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe -user=mysql - this command does not return
to the command prompt so when I hit the enter key I get "Starting mysqld
daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql 0404124 00:13:21 mysqld ended.

It looks to me as if it attempts to start but fails with no error. What am I
missing on the reinstall?

Autoincrement Starting Value
i am using PHPmyAdmin to manage the mySQL data base, i was wondering how to change the auto increment initial starting point.

if i want to generate an Auto number in Alpha Numeric, is there any sort of option in database ?

Starting Mysql
This may be a very simple question and possibly could have a very simple
solution to it.Since I have been using mysql for less than 2 months,I
still consider myself a newbie.I still cannot execute certain
commands from my dos prompt, but I can run queries easily using
phpmyadmin.I have purchased MYSQL Second Edition (Paul Dubois) so I
hope to put it to good use soon.

The question that is of concern to me this morning is the prefered way
to start mysql.I seem to think that I always have a problem because
when I start my PC,mysql is already running as a service. But I am
thinking that because I login to my PC as any user other than the dbase
username,I have a problem afterwards.

Must I always log on to my PC (Win2K) as the same user as the created
user in my DBase in order for mysql to run properly?

Instance Not Re-Starting
I have a single instance of mysql running on my PC (Windows XP Prof.). I wanted to stop the service from running momentarily, and I did. However, now the service will not start even after rebooting and trying to start the instance manually.

I type in the password and mysql closes. When I reinstall it as an anonymous user mysql asks me to type in my password. I've reinstalled the program a few times. I tried to reset the root password. None of these things work. I also saw that I have a file called prod.err. I open up the file and I see a bunch of stuff that I don't understand. I greatly appreciate anyone who could help me solve this problem. I've run out of ideas.

Error On Starting
when i go to the command command prompt and change to the: c:program filesmysqlin folder and try to start mysqld --standalone i get an error. This is what im seeing:

C:Program FilesMySQLin>mysqld --standalone

Now i see its trying to open errmsg.sys in the directory:
program filesmysqlmysql server 4.1shareenglish
but there's no "mysql server 4.1" folder because its all in the mysql folder. How can i fix this? Is there a way to let it search in the proper directory?

Auto_Increment Starting Value
For a table I'm creating, I want the auto_increment primary key to start at zero. I know that I can put auto_increment = <number> at the end of the query to make it start at that number, but it doesn't work for zero. Is there any way to make it do this?

I should probably mention something I already tried that didn't work. I tried creating the table and not making the column auto_increment. I added the first row with a value of zero, then changed the column to auto_increment, but unfortunately this automatically changed the value to a 1.

Starting MySQL
I have a strange problem with mysql start. In normal procedure I do not see any problem.
I have my product patch (a tar file) and when I try to untar this under /tmp directory and try to start MySQL, it is not getting started. The tar file has following files extracted to /tmp folder
1. install
2. clearevents.sh
3. ClearEvents.class
4. README.txt
5. cleareventscron.txt

If I extract this tar file to some other folder, say /test, I do not see any problem in starting the SQL.Is there any conflict with the file names which I am using here?
Some one please help me in clarifying this issue.
