Backup Over Network Strategy

I am using MySQL 4.1 on Mac OSX.3(Panther) and I need to write a simple solution to backup all databases to a share on the network at night.

I know there are many posts regarding the different types of MySQL backup solutions, I haven't found any useful examples of using CRON jobs to do this (if that is even the best way).  Does anyone know of a simple way to schedule this backup to happen and send the .sql files over to a network share?  Otherwise I have to keep backing up manually which is not good.

Backup Strategy - Windows
I am new to mysql and would like to setup a simple database on windows server 2003.

The server has two drives

C: - for windows
D: - data drive

Drive C is not backed up reguarly, while drive D is backed up to tape.

Is it best to install mysql server to drive C and have it run scheduled backups in mysql admin to drive D which will be kept on tape later.

Or is it better to install mysql server to drive D and let the tape backup the data? Is there a danger of corruption or files being in use and unable to backup in this method?

MySQL - Multilingual Strategy (PHP)
I need to design a multilingual website, default English.

I have a few ideas of how I could do this, but I want to know what's the best way of doing this?

I need to have page titles, navigation + content all changeable when they choose the other language. Is the database the right way to do this? If so how is it best to structure it?

Design Strategy And Views
I am writing a php interface to access a large (100 million + records) database which is broken into 50+ tables by state. The script creates a temporary merge table with a union of the selected states depending on user input.  I believe this will provide the largest reduction of unnecessary row scans.
I then query the temporary merge table with any additional criteria given by the user.
Is there a benefit if I create a view on the merge table to futher reduce unwanted rows and then query the view instead of the merge table directly?  (I'm not really clear on how a view works.  Does it actualy run the select query like a subquery?

Buddy Update Feed Strategy
I need to build a buddy update feed, much like what you see on Facebook, where you can see what your buddies have done lately.

I'm struggling with the best way to aggregate the updates. The options as I see them are 1. at output time, read the various tables, find actions committed by buddies, sort by time, output. 2. Write to an action table after every action is committed, so on output all that needs to be done is a filter by user. 3. a variation on option 2, a cron would index actions like in option 2, but at time intervals, instead of at the time of each action.

I'm not a fan of all the extra writes, but option 1 will be a very expensive read, on a highly used page because it will have to read, join and sort from so many tables (posts, comments, buddies, uploads,

Backup MySQL Via Port 3306 (which Tool? Automatic Backup?)
i have quite a big database on my website - and i cannot get any backup via system dump or scripts anymore, because my hoster added some memory limits - and scripts/dump can't finish...

so the only way left is to backup my database via connection to port 3306 and tools like mysqlfront.

mysqlfront is unfortunately quite slow and buggy - so do you know any tools which can backup databases via external connection? - it would be great if there are tools which run automatically? (batch/commandline??)
backup with mysql.exe - h -u .... is impossible, too!

Network
Using a trigger can I send a TCP/IP message to the network everytime a new record is INSERT into a table?

Can't Connect Over Network
I have mysql 4.0.16 on my windows machine and have just installed suse
linux on another machine. It comes with mysql 4.0.15. After I got the
user setup I was able to use the mysql client on the windows machine to
connect to mysql on the linux machine I even used mysqldump piped to
mysql to dump a database to the new server. But now I can't seem to
login anymore. I don't think I changed any settings on the linux
machine so I am at a loss as to why I am getting this error.

ERROR 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

That happens immediately after I type in mysql -h 192.168.1.2 -u cdw
-pxxxxxx and hit enter

Network Connections
I can connect to the database on my FreeBSD system, but not from another
system on my network. How do I set it up to allow remote connections?

MySQL Over A Network
I'm trying to connect to a MySQL database from one computer on a network to another computer on the same network.

Connectivity Across The Network
I have read many postings about limiting connectivity and security. I would simply like to be able to connect my jdbc java applet to my mysql database.
I can connect when I run the browser from the same machine as both the web server and mysql db and then set jdbc driver code for URL to 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' and everything seems to work fine. COnnects, applet works, I can read and write data, etc.
But when I set the JDBC code URL to '192.168.1.3' (the IP address of my machine) and try to access this, I cannot connect to the database at all from any machine.
How do I allow connections to mysql from something that is not localhost or is on another machine?

Connecting To Database Over Network
I have a couple computers under one domain. I installed a MySQL database on my secondary computer and want to be able to access the information from that database on my primary computer.

Both computers are able to share files, no problem there, but when I try to connect to my secondary computer from my primary, it times out and says "Can't connect to mysql server on 'second computer';"

I had this working before but for some reason I can't get it to work now. Any ideas of what I'm missing here?

Also I'm using MySQLcc so it makes it a little easier for me. I've even created a second user account for the MySQL database on my secondary computer so I'm not trying to connect to through the root user.

(For example purpose, my secondary is called second and primary is call first...)

From my primary computer, I try to connect using this..

Hostname: second
User: user1
password: ****

And it times out when I try this. If I put this into my secondary computer it connects no problem.

Installing PHP/MYSQL On A Win Network
I am going to teach PHP/MYSQL to a group of students on a windows network. Do I have to install these on every station or only on the server? In which directory do the students save and test their work?

Logging On From Network Workstation
Having trouble logging on to the server from a workstaion on the network. Have added myself as a global user and the workstation as a host. MySql is listening on port 3306 but I can't make a connection. I get

[bob@Comp1 bob]$ mysql -h 192.168.0.2 -u bob -p
Enter password:

ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'bob@Comp1.home.wtaustralia.com' (Using password: YES)

I am using Mandrake10.0 and Mysql 4.0.18 I can connect using ssh but not as a remote user.

Administrator And Network Names
I recently unchecked "Disable name resolving" within administrator, located on network server.  My boss and I are the only administrators on the system and after a server reboot, our network names were resolved in administrator.  However every other computer on the network, without mysql administrator, still appears as "localhost:port#.  Is there a way to see other network names?

MySQL And Network Appliance
I was reading about The DataWare 2600 appliance from PogoLinux but that device was made back in 2003. I have a client server application that gathers computer information and uses that info in a database to deploy new pc's. Today I use Microsoft SQL 2005 database. It would be nice if I could use a Network Appliance running MySQL and Linux embedded rather that a traditional Microsoft server with SQL 2005.

Are there any network appliance products available today that run MySQL with Linux embedded. I searched the web and couldn't find any vendors that offer this solution. Is there anything like this out in the market? My next question is how hard would it be to convert the database and queries from Microsoft SQL 2005 to MySQL?

Can't Connect Over Local Network
I have installed MySQL on 2 machines on my network, on an XP machine and on an eMac. Using CocoaMySQL on the emac I can connect to data on the XP machine. But when I try to connect to data on the eMac using MySQL Control Center on the XP machine, I get this alert popping up:

Critical
ERROR 1130: Host '10.0.1.2' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL serve (sic)

So, the error on the XP box says that the XP box is a host not allowed to connect to "this" presumable what I had entered as the IP of the eMac (10.0.1.3).

Network Traffic MySQL 4.1
Is anybody familar with the status variable "bytes_sent"?  I have been running MySQL 4.0 on a Windows 2000 server for over a year and the variable "bytes_sent" was never greater than 0.  Which would make sense because I am using MySQL for a in-house application that is networked throughout the plant.

It is my understanding that bytes_sent is bytes sent through a TCP/IP connection.  Anyways, I just installed MySQL 4.1 on a PC for testing and the "bytes_sent" field is jumping like crazy and I am the only user logged into the database.  Where are the bytes being sent to?

Mysql On Local Network
Is there a way to share mysql on a local network?
Both computers running IIS on Windows XP Pro. Both have php running, but using a root website folder on another computer (main server).
Both are running PhpMyAdmin, but we are getting our own MySql database showing up. I want us both to get access to one MySql server.
We both access the website using http://localhost

Turning Localhost To A Network Server
I have a small home network with two computers. On my computer I am running MySQL 4.1.21-community as localhost. I have only be using this for development work.

My husband wants to learn SQL so I would like to be able to have Mysql Query Browser installed on his machine, with him accessing all the databases I have set up on my machine.

How do I go about giving him access to my databases?

My machine runs Windows XP and his runs Windows 2000.

I want to list all the server names on the network which are
connected to my system.
I want to proceed this using MYSQL.

Local Area Connection (network)
I have a local area connection (network) where the IP addresses are generated automatically. How do I find a server on a different computer in the same network? IP address are always changing so I have no idea how to find a server.

Host Unknown When Try To Copy Db Over Network

Error 13, Access A File In The Network
i am actually accessing a file that is located in the network, i get error 13 permission denied. It seems that i only can access files in a local disk drive. How can i set mysql to access the network??

Unable To Access Mysql On Network
We have one PC running xampp with a website on. that's working fine. however, when we go to another computer on the network and try to access the site, it cannot connect to mysql.

eg: 192.168.5.101 is the machine running the site. (everything works fine)

when accessing 192.168.5.101/site/ from another machine, the static HTML pages come over fine, but when we try to access a page using a mysql connection (PHP) we get an error.

Access denied for user ODBC@localhost. the PHP method we use to connect is mysql_connect("localhost","root","")

MySQL On A Network Drive Error
I want to install the current version 4.0.13 of MySQL on a Win2000
machine in a directory different to the default (C:mysql). It should
be a network drive, as this is backed up by our IT staff.

I install the package using setup.exe and selecting "Custom" but just
clicking OK on the following dialogue. As directory I selected
something like "H:....MySQL_4.0.13".

The package is installed correctly. I can install the service (mysqld
--install) and see it in the Service catalogue of Win2K. However, when
I want to run the service with "net start mysql" an error occurs:

System error 65 has occured.
Network access is denied.

I checked the security settings on the directories, but I had the
change priviledges. Setting them to "full access" didn't improve the
situation.

MySQL only works when I install it entirely on C:.

What am I missing here? I would like the installation to reside on a
network drive for the reasons outlined above.

Network Marketing Efforts Are Fail
Base on study made by one international marketing consultant, some of
the reason why most of network marketing effort are fail :-

1) No clear explanation of what the website or business is
about
2) Forms were asking for contact information without telling them
what you're going to do with their information and "What's In It For
them"
3) People need a proof that what the site says is true.
4) The need for understandable explanation of the compensation plan.
5) No indication of who, or WHAT, is behind the site.

Social Network Database Design Help
I'm using PHP and SQL to write a social networking-type site, where every user can make connections with other users, amassing a limitless list of "friends" (Which, as far as the database is concerned, is a collection of usernames). Since each user can store as many friends and he/she likes, it doesn't really lend itself to making a bunch of columns, since even if I made 100 columns for each user, they still wouldn't be able to store 101 friends, and I want them to be able to have limitless numbers of friends stored in their account (hypothetically).

The only solution I could think of is to create a new unique table for each user, and store the list of their friends in that table. But is this practical? Is there another preferred method?

Structure Of Small Social Network
I need to setup a social network type mysql database, but not as intense as friendster, thefacebook, myspace, etc.

i have a structure set up but it think it's weak and extremely limited:

Code:

+---------+-----------+
| user_id | friend_id |
+---------+-----------+
| 5 | 4 |
| 1 | 7 |
+---------+-----------+

i fear it's going to be a lot of redundant IDs in a column, which i think could be a problem when retreiving friends:

Code:

+---------+-----------+
| user_id | friend_id |
+---------+-----------+
| 5 | 4 |
| 1 | 7 |
| 1 | 9 |
| 7 | 9 |
+---------+-----------+

i want to do a "bob is friends with john" and a "jackie knows sally through richard" (aka friend of a friend). that's it and nothing more. how do i structure mySQL database to be able to this?

Steps To Connect Network Database
help me to connect to MYSQL Network Database. IN my webserver, phpadmin is installed. What and how i need to configure my local machine to connect the database. I 've installed mysql 4.1 and MY ODBC 3.51 in my machine but i was not able to connect it.

MySql Replication And Network Speed
We purchased 2 new HP DL385 servers that will be used for MySQL 5 in a
replication environment.
Server 1 (Master) is connected gigabit to our Cisco 3550 core switch
The Cisco 3550 core switch is connected gigabit over fiber to a Cisco 3548
switch in another building.
Server 2 (Slave) is connected to the Cisco 3548 on a 100MB switched port.

My question is whether or not the 100MB connection is going to be good
enough to do replication, or if I have to invest in getting gigabit all the
way to the slave server?

How To Allow Access To MySQL From Another Computer On Local Network?
when I am trying to connect from MySQL Studio on Windows XP, I get error
"Host '192.168.0.100' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server"

Unable To Connect MySQL Server Across The Network
We have a MySQL server that was managed by another group in our company, the guy who used to manage that MySQL server has promptly left. Now this server has turned into me. I'm a Microsoft SQL guy, however, the manager doesn't think there is much difference between MSSQL and MYSQL.

Now I am in the hot seat to fix a problem that just occurred last week. We're suddenly not able to connect this MySQL server across the network. I checked the network connection, everything looked fine, I was able to telnet into the port 3306. First I thought someone changed the root password, but I was able to connect the server from the local server by using:

mysql -h localhost -u root -p

Other accounts have the same problem as well. If I try to connect this MySQL server from a workstation, I'll get the following error message:

ERROR 1045 (00000): Access denied for user: 'root@CS7LL11' (Using password: YES)

It will be geatly appreciated if someone can inform me what I need to do to fix this problem.

By the way, this MySQL server has the version # 3.32.56-nt

MySQL Data On A Mapped Network Drive
I would like to have MySQL use a mapped network drive. I'd like to do
this in case there is a failure of the mysql machine, I can just replace
it with a new machine pointing to the same network drive.

Testing Access To MySQL-DB In Windows-Network
Background: I am writing in C# a program, which reads data out of a MySQL-DB. When the DB is on my local developer PC everything is fine. But when trying to access the MySQL-DB on a server in our Windowsnetwork, I receive the message: "Host '**' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server".

Connection Issues To Local Install When Changing Network
I have installed MySql version 5.0 locally onto my laptop.

I have problems when I change locations from the office to home, "Could not connect to specified instance. MySQL Error 1045 Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password:YES)"

I have a static ip address at work and but not when connect from home, but I don't see why this should be an issue as the install is local to my machine.

To get round this problem last time I had to uninstall and then reinstall MySQL but this is not really on every time I change locations.

Mysqldump Over Netowrk: Copy Table Instead Of Entire Network
mysqldump over network is working just fine like the following.

mysqldump -ukzu -p jokes | mysql -h 192.168.1.190 -ukzu -p jokes

I was wondering how I would copy a table in "jokes" instead of the whole db. Say if my table name was named "people" in the jokes table.

Capture IP Addr Of Network Users Accessing Database
I'm running MySql 5 and PHP 5, along with Apache2 on a winxp box. My database has info that needs to remain confidential, and as an extra security measure, I want to capture the dsn of the network users performing transactions. I have Apache configured to do this, but how do I get that data into my databse, so that I can match a transaction to a specific terminal at a specific time? I suspect somebody has already answered this, but I figure I haven't googled the right question. I am also capturing the user name and the time of each transaction, but that is pretty straightforward.

Storing Text Articles By Network... Use Of Single Table?
I have a website where each network has their own unique ID. Right now, there are about 100,000 individual networks. I want users to be able to submit a story based upon which network they belong to. The submitted story will only be shown in that network as well. The submitted text story will only be about 1000 words long, so not too long. The user will be often performing full text searches on stories in their network.

Should I create a table called stories for each network?

Or should I create a unique story id and link it to each network?

Network Problem - ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost Connection ....
I'm having problems with my MySQL server when I do queries that return a lot of data over the network.

It's fine if I connect via the local UNIX socket

> mysql -u root -p

> SELECT * FROM users limit 100;
returns 100 rows in a few seconds

>SELECT * FROM users limit 1000;
returns 1000 rows in a few seconds

But when I try the same thing but connecting to the network port I get

> mysql -u root -p -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306

> SELECT * FROM users limit 100;
returns 100 rows in a few seconds

> SELECT * FROM users limit 1000;
sits there for about 15 minutes and then I get the following message
ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost connection to MySQL server during query

If I watch the traffic with tcpdump it sends a few packets right at the start and then doesn't appear to be sending anything for the next 15 minutes until the error appears.

I'm using 5.0.27-standard-log community edition.

How Do I Setup The Server On A Network Drive For Client Software To Access?
I'm building a database system for our department at work and have successfully installed the MySQL Server 5.0 to my local machine and developed my user interface to access it read/write/update, etc. just fine through VB6 and the ODBC driver.

My problem now is how do I get the database files and server functions moved/transplanted/installed on a network share drive (Windows 2000) that my peers and I have access to, so that I can deploy me client user interface onto their machines so we can all access the database across the network and I can get the files off my local hard drive?

Backup
How do i make a backup of my database structure without the actual data in them. I have a couple yrs worth of data stored and would like to just back up the actual tables with no data...

Can this be done from within the MySQL administrator program?

Backup
I have my DB hosted somewhere, but it's a hosting center that has no phone number. Nehow, if I have a MySQL DB with like 6 databases and many tables in each DB what would be the best way for me to back it up?

If you have a hosted DB, and let's say you loose data, how do you regain it?

Is backing up usually done manually, or is it done through software like backupExec or something? In the context of this being hosted.

Yes i konw i need to change ISPs, but I want to know the process first. Also, if you ask ur ISP to do a rollback, is there a fee for this? A future ISP of ours charge 25$ for it.

Backup Db
I just started using MySQL yesterday, so I really am incompetent about most of it. Where is my db being stored and how do I back it up?

Best Way To Backup
Is there anyway to backup mysql without grinding the site to a halt while it runs?
I've moved it to 3am but it can take a long time and if there are still visitors on the site then they cannot search while its running.

Backup
I'm trying to create a backup.bat file to do my backups. In my test .bat file I have:

mysqldump -u root -p password database >backup.sql

Obviously this command is failing because I am asked for my password each time I run the bat file, then is says it can't find table "password."

Backup DB
how or a program that can turn .frm, .myi, .myd files into .gz files or how to extract or make a importable file with all the info from them without mysql installed on windows? I deleted the program thinking i wouldnt need it anymore and now I need the information from the files but cant get mysql to work again.

Getting A Backup
we started using a doc management system that requires MySQL. Therefore I need to find out the quickest and less error prone way to create a backup of my MySQL databases.

I found some nice resources on the net, but most already start telling me that method x works only for table types a and b, while method y is for table type c only. So first question would be how to find out which kind of table types I have in my database (as they were created by the application, not me).Any other hint on how to get a fool-proof backup (*cough... also easy to restore) would be very much appreciated. A small downtime of the databases (e.g. write lock) is not a problem, as our netapp can make a volume snapshot in matter of seconds.platform
