Set MySQL To Listen From Other Computers
I have a problem connecting to MySQL server! The server is working on the other computer than my scrpit(my web page). The IP of MYSQL computer is 10.0.0.2. and port 3306! When i try to connect like this : $link=mysql_connect("10.0.0.2.", "user", "password"); $db ="database_name"; ... I get the folowing massage: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to MySQL server on '10.0.0.2' (10061) in D:InetpubwwwROOT....... The ip, username, password and database name are all correct! It is said, that it's possible, that the MySQL is set to work on localhost! If this is the problem, where to configure mySQL, to be able to connect from other computer?

Order By Having No Affect
I have the following query: SELECT a.awardId, a.linkId, a.award, a.awardDate, a.dateCreated, a.dateModified, a.orderBy, c.pageTitle, u.username FROM lnk_content_awards as a INNER JOIN tbl_links as l ON a.linkId = l.linkId INNER JOIN tbl_content as c ON l.contentId = c.contentId INNER JOIN tbl_users as u on a.cuID = u.uID ORDER BY l.orderBy the query runs fine, but the ORDER BY is having no affect on the order of the records, can anyone shed any light on why this is happening?

MySQL Redhat
I have installed MySQL 3.53 on two RH7.3 and one RH9.0 boxes. On one of the 7.3 and the 9.0 box, when I try to connect remotely, it takes about 45 seconds to connect, whereas the other 7.3 box connects almost immediately. The fast box has standard install of 7.3 with tomcat added. The 9.0 box is straight RH9.0 standard install. I can't find anything in common between the slow boxes, but not on the fast one.

RedHat 8 And MySQL
I recently ran across an interesting problem, and I'm curious as to whether any of you out there have had the same problem. A friend of mine was trying to get his MySQL server running on RedHat, and was having a difficult time. He could not connect from his windows workstation. After a short look at his user table, I could see it was set up to only allow local connections (an obvious default security measure). This is where it gets wierd. From a SSH session, I created a super user with full rights to all databases on all hosts (allowed login from any host). But my friend still couldn't connect from his workstation. I finally realized that the mysql daemon is appending '@localhost' on the supplied username no matter what the user supplies. Thus, a non-local connection fails. Perhaps I'm missing something here...I am obviously not a MySQL expert. But I was able to get my MySQL running very quickly on my Mandrake 9 box. It seems RedHat has made some changes to its distribution of MySQL. I'm not sure what to do next.

Listen To Modifications
I'm using MySQL databases from version 3.23.15 and up. I would like to monitor changes on some tables. Triggers would do great but they aren't supported in the versions I'm running. How could I monitor changes to specific tables and columns. The same functionality should be ideally working on all versions I'm using.

MySQL On Redhat Linux
To make a long story short, let me say I had MySQL working on Windows 98 and everything was fine. Well, I took the big leap and removed all traces of Windows and Microsoft from the computer. (hooray!) Once I had Linux running OK, I downloaded and installed MySQL using an RPM package. I guess the server is running (it says it is every time the computer starts and it stops successfully every time the computer shuts down) however, I cannot figure out how to get the MySQL prompt. I've searched the entire hard drive for MySQL, mysql, MySQL*, mysql* and probably some others, too. The only thing I found was a shell script called mysql that starts or stops the server if I am logged in to Linux as root. I cannot figure out how to start the interactive program that allows me to make select statements, inserts, updates, etc. I'm wondering about some things: Did I download and install the wrong thing? Am I just not looking for the correct thing? Did I install it incorrectly?

How Make Mysqld Listen To Only 2 IPs
I have an development/test server on a windows 2000 box running. AFAIK mysql needs 127.0.0.1 to connect to the localhost, if I use it on the db-server's machine. Usually I'd connect via LAN so I need mysqld listen on 2 IPs. 1) 127.0.0.1 2) 192.168.1.42 <-- LAN-IP This box has a second LAN-Interface and a third which connects to ADSL. Those 2 are to be considered realm of evel. I just rather have mysql listening on localhost and one of the LAN-interfaces. Is this possible at all ? There is this parameter for mysqld : bind-address It only works with 1 aeddress. Even when I put 2 such lines in my.cnf it just takes the second value. Do I have to let it listen on 0.0.0.0 and let mysqld sort the access attemts with the grant tables ?

Activating MySQL In RedHat Linux 9
After being absent for a while now I'm back with this question: Does anyone know of any guide on how to start mysql on Linux? Actually I was writing a long complain that mysql doesn't run on linux! But during the writing I could sort of fix it! Now it works, but only the mysql & test databases are not active coz their directory isn't created. I think I can do something for it myself! I just wanted to know if any of you went through the same experience: running mysql that is already installed with your Linux package, not grabbing a new mysql and deleting the old one and installing the new one!

Creating A Queue
I am working on a queuing system in which I insert records into a database table that begin with a status='U' for Unprocessed, status='P' for Processing and status='C' for Completed. I am currently doing a SELECT * FROM queue WHERE status='U' LIMIT 1;. I immediately run an update on that record to UPDATE queue SET status='P' WHERE id=ཆ' This seems to work great if I only have one process pulling items from the queue. However, if I have multiple processes running at the same time, there is the possibility of pulling the same record twice before the UPDATE occurs. Is there a way to prevent this other than by locking the table?

Java In Linux (Redhat 9) To Access MySQL
Using a Java program, I can connect to the test database in MySQL. The test database is installed using a MySQL utility, and it can be accessed by any user without supplying a password. The relevant lines in my Java (Java version 1.4.1) code are: Connection con = null; String url = "jdbc:mysql:///test"; // <== no user or password specified con = DriverManager.getConnection(url); However, when I try to connect to the accounting database (built as one follows the Larry Ullman's "MySQL" book), the program fails. I need to supply a user and a password. The relevant lines are now: Connection con = null; String url = "jdbc:mysql:///accounting?user=root&password=pswd"; // <== con = DriverManager.getConnection(url); I cannot get a connection. The error message is: "Invalid authorization specification: Access denied for user: 'root@thorvald' (Using password: YES)" (thorvald is my machine name.) I have tried all sorts of variations on the url, trying to access the accounting database, with no success. I can use the same user/password of root/pswd within the mysql monitor to access anything I want. Any ideas? Again, I am using Linux (Redhat 9) , Java 1.4.1, MySQL 4.0.13, and the MySQL ConnectorJ 3.0.8 (for Java access to MySQL).

Creating A Queue Read-out.
I am trying to create *what should be* a simple result of where a person is in line, but I am having a lot of trouble. I have spent hours searching, and for one thing I don't even know what to search for. So here's what I am trying to do... Let's say I have rows 1-10 in a database and rows 2,5,6,9, & 10 are all marked with '0' and the others with '1'. If my $ID is '6', then my code would print out < 3 of 5 >. Here is the code that I do have... $num_in_line = (I don't know what query to put here.) $of_total = mysql_result(mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(ID) FROM all_programs WHERE list = '0'"),0); echo $num_in_line.' of '.$of_total;

Size Of Indexes Versus Data File Size
I am adding indexes to a table with about 200,000 records. Every field indexed adds about 2MB to the index file (*.MYI). The index file is around 8MB and the data file is around 10MB. Is there some optimum ratio I need to know about? (I have examined the queries and am indexing field used in WHERE, ORDER BY and GROUP BY clauses.)

Thread_stack On Redhat 8.0
I saw this section in mysql manual. "If you are using Red Hat 8.0 or a new glibc 2.2.x library, you should start mysqld with the option --thread-stack=192K. (Use -O thread_stack=192K before MySQL 4.) If you don’t do this, mysqld will die in gethostbyaddr() because the new glibc library requires a stack size greater than 128K for this call. This stack size is now the default on MySQL 4.0.10 and above." I am using red hat 8.0. Mysql is started automatically when my machine is started. How should I set this variable. Can I add this to my.cnf file and restart mysql. If so how should(format) I add it to the my.cnf file.

Installation Problems On RedHat EL4 On Ia64
I'm running RedHat EL4 on an ia64 system. I've been using PostgreSQL for a while but I now have an app that I think requires MySQL so I wanted to try it out. I tried installing MySQL-server-standard-5.0.18-0.rhel4.ia64.rpm and I get an error that it conflicts with mysql-4.1.7-5.RHEL4.1, so apparently I've already got MySQL 4.1.7 on the system. I want use PHP with MySQL, which means I have to configure PHP and tell it where the MySQL headers are. But I don't seem to have headers, at least not that I can find. I tried uninstalling MySQL 4.1.7 first but it says that dovecot and perl depend on it. I tried installing the "headers" rpm for 4.1 but the only one I found was 4.1.18 and rpm says it conflicts with mysql-4.1.7-5.RHEL4.1. So, any suggestions? I don't think I'm currently using MySQL for anything, but I don't want to break perl. I'd like to get 5.0 running. I just don't know enough about Linux and RPMs to be confident that I can uninstall 4.1 and install 5.0 without screwing something up.

What Is The Max Size Allow For Mysql???
when I dump my db (as in mysqldump) I realize that the size of file is getting big (I guess this is one of the database's nature - to grow :-) ). Right now the size of my db is 200Mb and my estimation that it will grow in 800Mb/Per year (so it'll reach 1Gb by the end of the year) Question: what size would it be wrong to use mySql? I mean, if my db size is 3Gb am I ok? should I expect performance issues? or it doesn't matter.

Size A MySQL Server
I've got a question about how to size the server hardware for a MySQL system that I've got to buy and build. We're going to be putting a database on MySQL that will contain upwards of 20 million rows of data. This data will be used by Java applications running under Tomcat to provide web pages, Java data objects and probably most importantly SOAP web services. The total number of concurrent users of this data is not know, but could be thousands / hour. The database will be essentially read only, no transactions or updates by users. The whole thing will be running on a RedHat Enterprise Linux AS server. What I'd like to know is what kind of machine should I be buying; CPU speed wise, memory size wise and disk size? My initial impression is that the requirements I've outlined above could be handled readily by even a modest machine, but I wanted to ask for feedback in case my impression is wrong.

Mysql Database Latent Size
We tried 2 techniques to mesure db size and both fails to return realtime size. a) under innodb, we ’show variables’, find the innodb_data_file_path variable and parse the size (works only if not autoextend) and we substract the ’InnoDB free: ??? kB’ from the Comment field of ’show table status’. b) for all monitored tables, we figure: indexFree = indexLength/dataLength * dataFree and we sum up: dataLength-dataFree + indexLength-indexFree In both case the size is fair, although not perfectly equal (method A reports bigger size), but the growth is comparable. The problem lies in the accuracy of that info. We do bulky deletes, removing 10 to 40% of rows in many tables. First bug, the size of the DB is not quickly following the ’delete’ statements (it may decay for 20-40 minutes after the statements completed!!). Second bug, the DB size is not changing for 1-2 hours even though we inserts a lot. (We are talking about a few 10 millions rows tables in a 40 gigs InnoDB space, getting ~500 inserts/s, ~2000-5000 deletes/s) How can one mesure the DB size more in real-time, and avoid/account the latent period where growth seams abscent?

Reducing Mysql Database Size
I run 4 forums and have 4 mysql databases of 100mb limit each. It has come to my attention today that 1 of my forums had increased to 110mb in size, so I deleted a section of my forum which has 18,000 posts in which reduced the mysql database down to 85mb. In contrast one of my other forums has twice as many posts yet is only 50mb in file size so I cannot understand why this forum which has less data has a mysql database of 85mb ? I have checked all files and optimised the database and this has only brought things down from 110mb to 81mb. What I do not understand is, is how come I already have a forum which is identical and has more posts yet is much less in database size, and how can I now go about reducing this one which is dangerously close to its limit.

Maximum Size Limit Of MySQL Database?
What is really the maximum size limit of MySQL database? If we are designing a specific program that is projected to last for a longer period of time, and we will be using MYSQL database, we often ask our mind, how long will it stands to hold millions of records. Got any brilliant ideas or tips, wherein we can maintain mysql performance and even the records go heavy, it can still perform its best. Can it hold millions of records? what should be done inorder not to make it crawl after 2 or 3 more years?
