PHP Security - Some Common Security Pitfalls That Are Inherent In The Language?
I'm working on developing an application in PHP4/MySQL and I've got very little experience with either. Most of my work is in ASP/Access and compiled programs. The app that I'm developing doesn't need to be perfectly secure, but I want to avoid common pitfalls, and I have no idea where to start. From your experience, what are some common security pitfalls that are inherent in the language? I shouldn't have any trouble with program logic being an issue, just stuff that may be PHP specific. (Like the User being able to put anything that they'd like in the QueryString and having that show up as a variable in the script).

How Would Php Security Compare To Java Security?
I just want to know how would php security compare to java security? Its because that me and my officemate are developing a site which would handle confidential documents and we just cant decide on whether we should use php or java. Security - What Security Dangers Should I Be Aware Of?
I am quite new to PHP but I have managed to write a simple page create script. So far the script does not have any user input. It does open/write files and it also accesses my MySQL database. No variables are passed from script to script either. My question is, what security dangers should I be aware of? My other question is, can you download a php file and view the contents?

PHP Book Recommendations
I am going to be teaching an introductory, course on PHP. As this course has not been offered before, there are no existing materials or list of resources for me to choose from. This is a Good Thing(TM) because I get to do Whatever I Want(TM) as far as choosing course materials goes. So here's the questions: What PHP books do you like? Why do you like them? What expertise range is targeted by the particular book(s) you have mentioned? What books do you really *not* like and why? (just as useful info as knowing which books are popular is knowing which are *un*popular) What other PHP resources have you used and why? Which Book To Choose?
At the moment I own PHP and MySQL for Dynamic websites 2nd edition by Larry Ullman. I've read through it and done several examples. However, I personally find by creating mini websites, instead of just typing one page scripts that I learn it more. I have gone through the content management system and user management system in the book several times, using and adapting the code for different websites. I now want to expand these examples so I can see how different people code and find the best medium for myself. Which book of the following three would you suggest I buy? Appointment Book
This is an overview of my appointment book. After user clicks on a date on monthly view calendar, user will see a schedule list that has several columns & rows. Each column is occupied by an employee. Each row is 15 min increment of time. User can click on available cells of that schedule list to make an appointment . These are problems that i am running into: I can't figure out how to COLOR the table cells of the schedule list that have been booked. PHP/MySQL Book
I've dabbled a little in PHP and MySQL, but now I'd like to buy a book. I've pretty much decided on "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Thomson and Welling, and it seems sensible to buy the latest (3rd) edition. But I see that the 3rd edition covers PHP5 and MySQL5. The server I would be writing for is running version 4 of both. Would it be a bad move to buy the 3rd edition of the book, or would I not have any problems learning to write for PHP 4 and MySQL 4 from it?

What Is A Good PHP Book
I plan on making a PHP based website for a school project, and I wanted to get a book so I could teach myself and then have it as a reference, but I'm not sure what I should get. I consider myself a techie, I know C++ and Oracle SQL along with HTML/CSS. I wouldn't mind if it were too technically oriented, I just want to have an actual tangible book to use in addition to the online stuff out there. I've looked at 2 O'Reilly books, Learning PHP 5 & PHP Cookbook since I know O'Reilly books are usually fairly decent but it's hard to make a decision between the 2 and I don't want to buy both, especially if neither are any good.

Good PHP Book
I've got two already and they've helped familiarize me a little bit. I have PHP for dummies and PHP cookbook, but I really need something more. I have no programming knowledge so this is very challenging to me, but I still think I can learn what I want to do. I know html and have done some things in php, but I want to have a better understanding. I would like to understand creating and working with databases and at this point I am really not there.

my PHP guest book program. I have a guest book and it is using a .dat file for the database. I would like to add an email feature to that program, so if I send an email (like using email feature of my cell phone), the text (no address, no subject line, etc.) of that email will be automatically placed in my guest book.

Php 5 Information, Tutorial, Book, Etc
I have worked on php for the past 6 years off-and-on and I was planning on making the conversion over to 5.x and I understand there has been a lot of changes from 4.x. Based on this, I was wonder if you could suggest a book that highlights the changes with examples as well as a site or two that would help with this. On another note, I would like to know how you guys seperate and tier your applications in php (I have been working with .NET in which we used a 3-tier). Do you try and use 3-tier, 2? How do you pass around the connection in php when you seperate the code (use some type of global or always pass the connection)? Etc?

Looking For A Good Php Book To Use With Adobe CS3
Sometime back I bought a couple books on Dreamweaver and Flash for the CS2 Suite and along with it bought a book for Php, Foundation Php for Dreamweaver 8. I read the Dreamweaver and Flash books but never have read the Php book. Now that I was ready to I just upgraded to the CS3 suite. My question is, is it important to look for a newer Php book to use with this CS3 suite or would the current book be ok and up to date? Should I look into the Foundation Php 5 for Flash 8 as a complement to the current book or is there a completely other book I should look into? I'm completely new at Php so am definitely looking at something that's entry level.

Advanced & OO PHP Book Recommendations
I can create fully functional websites, custom CMSs and so on. However, I would like my code to be more modular, easier to maintain, and generally "better." I'm not very good with object-oriented PHP at all, and I would like a book that can get me on that path, as I think it's the way to go, (correct me if I'm wrong), and generally get me thinking about advanced and/or different PHP techniques. I've read that Larry Ullman is a good author. Is this true for what I am looking for, or are his books more like "LAMP for Dummies" -type books? I've always just used the PHP manual to figure things out, but I want to advance my coding. I'm not looking for a reference manual of functions and stuff - I'm looking for techniques and ideas.

User Address Book
I want to create or buy a script that allows any user to open an account for there own address book (mainly email addresses). Every user will have their own username and password. A User-accessible Address Book Using Php?
I still can't figure it all out. I am trying to create a web page (using php) where: 1) A visitor add his or her name to an address book that can also be viewed online by other visitors to the website. In creating this, I will also need to: 2) Allow that visitor to create a username and password to add his/her information. 3) Allow that visitor to make changes and updates to his or her entry in future visits to the website. and... 4) Create an automated system for that user to retreive his/her username and/or password if s/he has forgotten it. Boy oh boy, would I be happy just to be able to make step #1 a reality. Can anyone please help me with this? I am leasing space from Aitcom and my server is a Linux system. I have MySQL and PHP available to work with. I have an example in mind. Looking For A Good Book To Begin Learning PHP
Just like the subject says, I'm interested in taking up PHP and would like to know if anyone knows of any books that are a must have. I know there are tons of books out there on every language, but I'm sure some are much better than others. I'm mainly looking for a beginners book that also had advanced content too, but if that doesn't exist, then just an excellent beginners book would be fine too.
