Paginating And Data Sorting With Php/mySQL
I have a main menu full of information which is paginated 20 records per page. I'm trying to make the query so that the user can sort the data by links located at the top of the page.

"What's My Problem?" - It works, when I select the link it sorts by whatever I have selected as I want but...

The Problem - It only sorts one page and doesn't continue on, when I click page two the values are reset. This is a new operation to me so if anyone could offer a suggestion I'd appreciate it.

The Question - How do I sort paginated data and make it so the data stays sorted throughout the 20 or so pages?

Paginating
My last thread on pagination was getting very confusing to read due to the fact that I had completely changed scripts during the course of the thread and confusion was developing as to which script I needed help on. I hope I'm not breaking any posting rules, it seemed that simply starting a new thread was the lease confusing way to proceed.

Anyway, below is the script that I am working with at the moment. I returns no errors, but when you follow the supposedly paginated links at the bottom they don't take you anywhere. I'm not convinced that the $page, $pageprev, and $pagenext variables are functioning properly, but I can't figure out why not, but for all I know it could be something else wrong. Any thoughts? Paginating Result For Two Queries
My page pagination works fine, but the code is just messy. Because I have two queries, one based on getting the ID number ($_GET['ID']) and one based on searching by keywords ($_POST['keyword']), I almost have duplicate codes for both.

For example,

if($start!= 0) {
if($browse) { //for $_GET query
echo 'Previous</a> ¦ '
}
else { //for $_POST query
echo 'Previous</a> ¦ '
}
}

I am not putting the full version of codes down as that would be too much. But hopefully, you'll get what I mean. I have to list "echo 'Previous</a>' twice because one's for the get query and the other's for the post query. So a lot of duplicate codes. How could I shorten the codes a bit?

Paginating, Works, But How Do I Make It Use ... When Over 3 Pages?

Paginating Random Select Query Results
I am just starting with PHP/MySQL and using Dreamweaver MX 2004.
I am selecting a subset of records from a table, then ordering them using RAND() and then displaying 6 at a time on a page. So far so good but there is one major problem, namely, when you move from page to page viewing the results the query is rerun for each page which means that you end up duplicating results.

What I want to be able to do is run the query once and then page through the returned results without duplication. Also to be able to go back & forth between pages and see the same set of results.

Here's a simplified example: Suppose I have 12 records (call them A - L).
The query : SELECT * FROM Table WHERE Criteria = 1 ORDER BY RAND()
Which returns: D F K A L F J H G C B I
So my pages should show the following:
Page 1: D F K A L F
Page 2: J H G C B I

And I should be able to switch back and forth between these pages and always see exactly the same records each time.
However what I see at the moment is:

Page 1: D F K A L F
Page 2: F B C A E D (Note duplicates from Page 1 because query has been re-run)
Page 1: C B F A K L (Note duplicates again plus results not the same as previous visit to Page 1)

How Do Iterate Through MySQL Records And Displat Them?
Basically I have a page where a person can choose from a list of stories posted by people, or they can choose to submit their own. I've managed to do the page where they can submit their on. The way i did this was to set up a mySQL database, and table in the database called stories. I then made an id (primary key), author, title, body and date field in the table. When the user submits their story its given an id (which increments on each submition) and their author, title and body fileds are sent to the database. The date key is automatically stamped in.

Ive also managed to have the submition page display what they submitted by using the count(*) function, their story would be the last to be submited , so it pulls that from the database and displays it.

Now what I want to do - on the page where they can pick a story, is have the page connect to the database and grab each record and display the author and title on the page next to a radio button. And have the id for the story in a hidden field or variable so when the user to chooses a particlar story it uses the id to grab the story from the database.

So how do iterate through all the records in the database, and display each one?

We're talking thousands of records here - it's not practical to have an HTML

What I thought about doing was to have them export the data to the CSV file

Once uploaded, I would have
them go to a page with a PHP script which would run the command to import
the data to MySQL. PHP can run shell commands, as I understand it from the

Changing Data In Objectified Mysql Records
I am using this very slightly modified function found here:
http://us2.php.net/mysql_fetch_object
to make mySQL rows into objects of type $classname:

// This takes db result rows and makes real objects of $classname type
function &buildObj($result, $classname) {
while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) {
if ($row === null) return null;

/* Create the object */
$obj =& new $classname;

/* Explode the array and set the objects's instance data */
foreach($row as $key => $value)
{
$obj->{$key} = $value;
}
$objs[] = $obj;
}
return $objs;
}

This is called by a retrieve: function:

function retrieve($where) {
echo $query = "SELECT * FROM $this->table WHERE " . join(' AND ',
$where);
$result = mysql_query($query);
$rows =& buildObj($result, get_class($this));
mysql_free_result($result);
return $rows;
}

The problem I am encountering is that if I do this in my script:

$listing = new Listing;
$listings = $listing->retrieve(array('row > 1') );
foreach ($listing as $aListing) {
$aListing->address='xxxxxxxxxxxxx'
}
foreach ($listing as $aListing) {
print_r($aListing);
}

The value in $aListing->address is unchanged.

However if I do this:

$listing = new Listing;
$listings = $listing->retrieve(array('row > 1') );
foreach ($listing as $aListing) {
$aListing->address='xxxxxxxxxxxxx'
$newArray[] = $aListing;
}
foreach ($newArray as $aListing) {
print_r($aListing);
}

I see the update values in $aListing->address .
