Storing Sessions In Mysql
I'm working on a shopping cart which uses sessions and I'm battling with a couple of decisions ... 1) Allow users who don't use cookies Currently I'm passing the SID's in the url for those not allowing cookies. Is there anything I should be considering when displaying SID's in the browsers address? Should I just disallow those not allowing cookies? 2) Store the session ID's and cart contents in mysql for non registered visitors. I can see that there might be a reason to obtain statistics on visitors who fill a cart and don't register, but I can see a lot of redundant data being left in the db. Currently I'm storing everything in an array and then once the visitor has created an account I'm going to input the contents of the array into the db. Does anyone have any personal preference over these design considerations which I may have overlooked?

Storing Sessions In Mysql Database
I've written a class to store sessions in a database and everything initially seems to be working great. The session information is recorded in the database and the information is updated each time the page is refreshed. The problem though, is that a cookie is still set by the browser and PHP uses the cookie to track the session instead of using the database information. I was under the impression that if you were to use a database to track sessions, then a cookie wouldn't be used or set. I have set the session hander using session_set_save_handler(). How do I correct this problem and make it so that cookies aren't used?

Advices On Storing Passwords During Sessions, E.g. For LDAP Autologin?
I am writing a PHP application for handling S/MIME e-mails, which would have to login from time to time to an LDAP (OpenLDAP) server in order to fetch certain data, including some very sensitive user data, such as user's private key. All communication between browser and server will be done via SSL, using client certificates. Since PHP doesn't offer persistent LDAP connections, the scripts must have access to the user's LDAP password (which is entered when the user logs in to the system). What secure methods for storing the password would be recommended in this case? One idea I had would be to encrypt the LDAP password (e.g. using mcrypt) with a secret key and store the encrypted value in $_SESSION. The secret key would be generated using info from user's SSL public certificate plus some unique session-specific ID. Then the key would be broke up in two, one part stored in $_SESSION and one part stored in a cookie. This way you can't decrypt the LDAP password unless you have both pieces of data (one from client-side cookie and one from server-side session). I'm considering going to such lengths because I think the chances of a hacker to obtain both the cookie and the session vars are quite slim. Of course, additional security checks will be employed, e.g. checking IPs and agent info when access to a session var is requested, short lifespan for sessions etc. Can anyone see any potential security problems with this approach? Or suggest more secure methods? Wishful thinking: would be nice if I could encrypt the LDAP password with user's SSL public key (available from $_SERVER[SSL_CLIENT_CERTIFICATE]) and store this encrypted value in $_SESSION. Then, whenever the LDAP password is needed, the script would ask the browser to decrypt it using user's private key and return the decrypted password back to the script. But, as far as I know, this isn't possible, is it?

Working With Sessions And Storing Credit Card Info Inside A Session
have a security concern working with sessions and storing credit card info inside a session, going to the payment gateway, redirecting back to my page and doing a soap connection and processing the order with the session variables, and then destroying the session afterwards. is it safe enough to store credit card information in this manner, can hackers get to this? cause its possible to view POST variables with a firefox plugin. or is it safer to write it to a temporary database table, do what i need to do and then delete the row?

Creating User Sessions W/out Using Sessions
I'm working on a user management system where I can use the benefits of PHP sessions w/out messing with them. Basically, my idea is to have an entry created into a "sessions table" when the user logs in. The table contains such info as the user's id number and the date/time they logged in. When the user logs out, the entry is deleted. In each page/script, it checks to see if the user is logged in by checking the sessions table for an entry w/their IP address and the date, to make sure it is fairly current (unless anyone can think of a better way to check). Now my delema....obviously, I don't want people that don't properly log out to have a session that could last weeks (depending on when they visit again). I am thinking a script that cleans up entries that are old would do the trick, but obviously I want this script to run say, at least once an hour. Obviously, I am not going to be able to sit at my computer and run this script every hour of every day. I was thinking of using the script and doing a cron job, but I think my host only allows one cron job per day...and only at night. Any thoughts??

How Do Different Sessions Work? Multiple Sessions
I use a messageboard which uses sessions. I have a login script which uses sessions. I have a charting app which uses sessions. How does PHP handle this? Does it create three different sessions or is everything handled by the one session file? In other words, is it working like magic and I don't need to worry about it. What I'm confused with is that at the start of the login script there is a start_session() and other session related stuff. On logout, the session is destroyed. Now does this affect the start_session() of the other scripts?

Storing Array In A Row
I run a site with staff-submitted reviews, and most of them are written by one author. However, we also do "multiple" reviews. Up until now I just had a userid for a 'Multiple' account and submitted them under that, but this makes it harder to print lists of all the reviews by one person, so ideally I wanna make a multiple select form so we can just select all the contributors and have the values saved in the database - in one row (something like "56,34,21" etc). I've coded a multiple select form with all the authors of articles for my site on, and I want to store the results of this in one row so I can grab them as an array later - how can I go about doing this? I just googled and came across using <select name="author[]"> in my HTML, and then using serialize() to process it, but it fails. When I run the following code, the value for 'multiplearray' remains at 0 whether I select single OR multiple values on the form: <?php $dbhost = ### $dbuser = ### $dbpass = ### $dbname = ### $conn = mysql_connect($dbhost, $dbuser, $dbpass) or die ('Error connecting to mysql'); mysql_select_db($dbname); if(isset($_POST['save'])) { $author = serialize($_POST['author']); $query = "INSERT INTO review_test (multiplearray) VALUES ('$author')"; mysql_query($query) or die('Error ,query failed'); echo "Query successful!"; } echo "<form name='test' method='post' action=''>"; $query2 = "SELECT Staff_id, displayname FROM users WHERE userlevel !=0 ORDER BY username"; $result2 = mysql_query($query2) or die('Error : ' . mysql_error()); echo "<select name='author[]' id='author[]' multiple='multiple' size=ཆ'>"; while($row2 = mysql_fetch_array($result2, MYSQL_NUM)) { list($Staff_id, $displayname) = $row2; echo "<option value='$Staff_id'>$displayname</option>"; } echo "</select>"; echo "<br><br><input name='save' type='submit' id='save' value='Post Review'>"; echo "</form>"; ?>

Storing Arrays
Im trying to figure out a good way to store an array in mysql, and be able to retrieve the entire array, back into an array. Im building a form that allows authors to submit "Tags" for their books, so people can search on these "Tags" and it will search the Authors table in mysql for matching tags, so that readers can simply enter a tag, and find books that match the tags. For example: Thru a form, an author might type php, mysql, development - Those would then by submitted by a form, So what function could i use to put those into an array? Then how would i store the array in mysql and be able to retrieve it back into an array, for example /author.php?author=mike If mike's tags were php, mysql, development id like to list that on the php page next to his book. So what im trying to do is, 1. Get comma seperated values and put them into an array. 2. Store the array in mysql, and be able to retrieve it back into an array(i know database functions, just not sure what datatype i should use for the column to store these in).

Storing A Hierarchy In An Array

I realize that the way this is setup, the hierarchy is essentially a tree. But I am at a loss as to how to pull this data out, sort it, and display it wit nested <li> tags. I am thinking that this is more of a computer science problem.... What I mean by displayed as a hierarchy, is that the nested <li> tags will indent themselves to look like that.
