Cmyk Or RGB Which Is Better For Printing?
If I want accurate colour reproduction whilst printing onto paper, should I be in CMYK or RGB mode?
Does it even matter and what's the difference?

I've created a satire newspaper in photoshop and when I sent it (saved as pdf) to the printers they asked for all black colours to be saved as CMYK. I created the whole newspaper in RGB, is there an easy way to change it all to CMYK? Is it even possible in photoshop?

I noticed my first problem when printinga sample at Kinko's. I had mostly black and white on my image, but I had a light yellow to dark yellow gradient as a background, and when it printed, banding appeared towards the lower part of the page where it should have been dark yellow. Basically that gradient wasn't smooth. I also noticed this on my computer when using a CMYK Color Mode, but it was less subtle (when I use RGB, the gradients are perfectly smooth from light to dark). The sample I took to Kinko's was a: Flattened image, Then saved as a Photoshop PDF As a Copy ICC Profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 I just need to know the right options to start my image, and the right options to save my image as a PDF to ensure the best print quality with no sacrifce to color, gradients, etc.

Multicolor Screen Printing With Half Tones (not CMYK)
I have been using photoshop to create screens for about 5 years. I have never gone beyond single color screens with halftones. This is nice because I can work on a back ground color, and represent my artwork in a single color, and simply make areas for halftoning by making the artwork color less opaque. This is kind of a hack though, and it is even more obvious when using layer styles which use the background color for a shadow or highlight. It seems like there should be an easier way to make this work... but I'm not a pro, and sometimes I get lost in the terminology. Essentially what i want to do is make photoshop work in a limited number of colors, and blends of those colors. This can be done in CMYK, but I want to work with even less color. For example blue background (instead of the assumed white) and artwork in yellow and orange. The only way i can think to do this, is to work in CMYK, and use the base colors for my artwork, and just live with not having an accurate representation to look at while I am working. There has got to be an easier way.... right??

Tile Printing With High Resolution Printing?
i have an image that is 28' wide by 60' high. i have to tile print it, but i have to print it out on film (see thru acetate). it has to be able to print at 1400 dpi. i know how to print at 1400 dpi on adobe photoshop, but i dont know how to tile print on that program. i have the image now in illusrtator, because it lets me tile, but i cant get it to print out for film (1400 dpi). im using a epson 1280 printer. i really need to be able to tile print this in high resolution on film. anyone know what i can do??

Photo Printing - Not Printing To Border
i've tried both borderless and non, I've also realigned by cartridges and updated drivers and program. When I'm printing with Photoshop CS, didn't do it on 6.0, it's not printing properly at all. It's not printing to the edges of the paper (4x6) and the space it's leaving on all sides isn't even. If I choose borderless it's even worse and if I print a larger picture on 8.5 x 11 and pick center, it's not even close, I'm talking inches off.

CMYK
I've been creating book covers in paint shop pro 8. I create the covers from images that I get from my customers, and then send them off to a printer to be printed. On a couple of occasions, the printer people have came back and told me my cover is created in "rich" black. I think they mean the CMYK value is 100% for all 4 colors. They won't accept that. My question is, in photoshop, is there a way once I receive an image to check and see what the CMYK value of that image is, and if so, fix potential problems as described above? It doesn't appear I can in paint shop pro. I have been looking for a good reason to purchase photoshop anyway since I'm sure its a much better graphics program.

W/ CMYK
I have a flattened .psd file with significant areas of contaminated black that needs to be changed to key color black. The problem is that the color mode was changed from RGB to CMYK at the last minute after the file was flattened and saved, so now I'm stuck with large black areas that are not PANTONE process black, but are 90% K with varying levels of CM and Y. I need to replace the large impure black swaths of my file with true key color black without compromising the quality of the file to ensure the project succeeds.

I just created the background of a business card in photoshop, it's pretty complex, using lime green as one the main colors. FORGOT TO CONVERT IT CMYK before I started. When I convert it to CMYK it gets very dark and doesn't look at all like it does in RGB.....

I sometimes Export a vector image with a text I put on, from Illustrator to PS. I do that because I want to work some more on it. However, I'm not sure whether to Export as CMYK or RGB. RGB/CMYK
I have a folder of images, some in RGB, some in CMYK. I want them all to be in RGB so I'm running a batch action on them with a conditional mode change. So, if a file is in CMYK, it is changed to RGB. But if a file is already in RGB, I get this annoying alert, telling me "Mode of the document is the same as the target mode. No conversion performed." Well, of course. I don't expect it to be converted. That's why I chose CONDITIONAL mode change! I don't want to have to hold PS's hand through this batch but it's making me sit through the conversion of hundreds of files simply so I can say okay that it's doing what I asked it to do. I've checked the "suppress color profile warnings" box and told it to log errors to a file (i.e not to stop) but I'm still getting the alert.

RGB Vs CMYK
This is probably a hoary old subject but I've found surprisingly little help via Google, etc. I just finished creating the background for a large map, with over a dozen RGB layers, most with masks, a number of adjustment layers and some alpha channels. I've heard that for CMYK output it's best to work in RGB and convert to CMYK at the last minute, and colour correct in CMYK. That made sense to me for a number of intuitive reasons, but now I'm writing up the metadata and I want to give factual reasons to do this, not just my assumptions. Obviously file size is one. It took 5 minutes to open or save this RGB file, CMYK could have taken 33% longer. Can anyone tell me how the math is done in PhotoShop? I'm wondering about the blending of all those layers with different blending modes, transparency, adjustment layers etc. In my map each pixel must have gone through a dozen or more math operations.   Will RGB, with it's 255 levels, be more accurate than CMYK with its 100 levels, or is the math all done in double precision and rounded at the end, or is the math all done in LAB or some other colour space? Also, I recall encountering some PhotoShop operations that were greyed out in CMYK. I tried to discover them today on a test file but drew a blank. Can anyone think of any? Any other pros and cons to RGB over CMYK? Andy PS: This forum software is unbelievable. Hard to believe Adobe would have something so clunky. Like they're actively discouraging the use of their forums.

CMYK Plus A Special Ink
I am looking to produce a print job in Five colours, CMYK plus a pantone colour. Is there a way to get Photoshop to generate or support a 5 colour file. an extra channel isn't regonized as an extra colour by quark express. At the moment the current answer is two tiffs over the top of each other with the upper set to over print, but this is a little clumsy!

CMYK Conversion
I have designed a CD cover for my band that we will have professionally printed. I'm now told that having designed the whole thing in Photoshop using RGB, that it needs converting to CMYK in order that it prints out properly at the Cd Printing firm. I have found the "image>mode>CMYK colour" function, but when I click it, it makes the whole image really dull and lifeless.

Adjusting CMYK In CS2
I have a background layer in Photoshop (CS2) that needs to be converted to a spot color. I have tried to select the channels and adjust them that way (yes, the entire image needs to be all the same color, with lighter and darker highlights and shadows), but can't seem to adjust them just be selecting them.

CMYK Pantone
My online printing outsource made a postcard containing my image and it came out about 1-1/2 stops too dark. When I questioned this I was advised as follows: "For best prediction of color output on a 4 color offset press, please compare your CMYK percentages with an industry-standard Pantone Process guide.">>This seems strange since a color image will have numerous different percentages of cmyk. I must be missing something. My friend who has the Pantone guide wants me to specify a Pantone number for use in comparing the image. I don't see how this can work for the same reasons (different colors, different percentages).>>The easiest solution I can think of is simply to brighten the image the next time I order postcards from this printer.>>

CMYK To RGB Conversion
I'm working on an image that I imported from an .eps file. I just noticed that it's in CMYK. I'm almost done, so I can't restart. I guess because .eps files are mainly used for printing from, it defaults to CMYK. ANyway, when I go to covnert to RGB it says it may alter the appearance. I can't see any difference, but I don't want to come back and kick me later. Does anyone know of any serious problems that can arise from changin image modes halfway through?

CS4 Gradient Map In CMYK Mode
when using gradient map or gradient map adjustment layer in cmyk mode, colors values after apply are different from values that i entered,for example:entering:C=0M=0Y=0K=100 after apply on image, read values are like from RGB:C=77M=75Y=62K=81 Importing file with gradient map from cs3 are ok until i click on the adjustment layer. RGB To Binary CMYK Conversion?
I would like to convert a RGB image to CMYK layers with in each layer, only 1 bit pixels (pixel absent or present). It's like decomposing my image to 4 monochrome one-bit images for an inkjet printer. I've tried the "Colour Settings" option of Photoshop but I can only have 4 bit or 8 bit layers. RGB, Grayscale, CMYK, Lab, Indexed??
What colour mode does everyone work in? Do you use a combination of colour modes? If you frequently use more than one, why, and how does it help? I spend most of my time in RGB at present, I also use Lab for some photographic work, true grayscale rarely, hardly ever use CMYK, and never really use Indexed or bitmap unless I've selected the wrong mode and can't figure out why all the menu items are unavailable!

Question About RGB / CMYK Colors In...
In the color picker, if I enter R255-G80-B0, the CMYK color reads M83-Y100. However, if I instead enter the M83-Y100 in CMYK first, then the RBG numbers are R240-G83-B35, and if I enter these numbers first, then the CMYK numbers change again. Why is this happening? Shouldn't the RBG translate to to just one CMYK color and vis versa?

How To Convert To 100% Black In CMYK?
I'm drawing cartoons in black & white for a publication. I've been told that I must make the black 100% and the CMY 0%. After I scan the image I convert it from RGB to CYMK mode but I can see in the channel's palette that it has colors mixed into the black. If clear the CMY channels it image loses detail. I've also desaturated the image but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Vector Art Forced To CMYK And 72 DPI In...
I'm aware that Photoshop is not the best program for working with vector files. Because of the kind of work I'm doing, I need to open vector files (mostly EPS) in PS throughout the day and work on them using specific filters that I have. In all previous versions of PS, when I opened a vector file there were no problems. The files opened exactly as they were saved. Since I upgraded to CS4, PS has started forcing a resolution of 72 dpi and CMYK mode when I know for a fact the file was created at 300 dpi and in RGB mode. I know it seems minor, but when you're working on 100 + files per day, it really cuts into your workflow.

I Changed To Composite CMYK And Cant...
cs3 has started to print very green since i ticked a checkbox and now i cant find the box to change back. printing the same photo in other applications is fine so its not the printer but a photoshop setting. which is the exact box that i changed from composite rgb to composite cmyk ( I remember that box on the right that said Text as black. But where is this from? It says its from Adobe InDesign. But I dont have In Design! I have checked Adobe Bridge but there is no printing and colour part in there. Anyone seen this in photoshop before?

New CMYK Conversion Behaviour In CS4 ?
With previous versions of Photoshop, when an RGB image in a given RGB colourspace was converted to CMYK by choosing Mode -> CMYK, it would convert to whatever CMYK was set as the Working Space in the Color Settings. With CS4 there's a warning dialogue that appears that makes one wonder if CS4 is behaving differently. It now says: "You are about to convert to CMYK with no color profile. This may not be what you intend. To choose a profile, use Edit > Concert To Profile". The resulting CMYK would certainly *have a profile* as it's the default selected in the Color Settings > Working Spaces menu. It's the same as if I had a CMYK file and selected Mode > RGB. This would convert from CMYK to whatever default RGB space is set in the Working Spaces menu. Yet from CMYK to RGB there is no such warning. Why not... the same logic would seem to apply. I think the warning just confuses to user and makes them think an error's about to occur. A more appropriate warning might be: "You are about to convert to your default CMYK (Color Settings > Working Spaces). This may not be what you intend. To choose another profile, use Edit > Convert To Profile".

RGB To CMYK/pantone Colors
I'm working with CS. I built a logo in RGB. I was advised by the printer at the beginning that RGB and a TIF file would be sufficient. For cards, that's true, but I'm advised that for the stationary and envelopes, being that 2 color was later chosen, I would need pantone colors. After changing to CMYK, I went into the color picker... chose the closest pantone color red I could find... and inserted the color into the original red. That seemed to work, but when I did the same with black... it came up gray.

Converting RGB To CMYK - Shortcuts
I have about 200 PSDs that were supplied by another designer, and I have to use them in an InDesign document. Unfortunately some are RGB, some are CMYK and all are layered. I'm wondering if there is some kind of preset or shortcut that enables me to convert them all to flattened CMYK PSDs, without having to open each one up and change it manually.

Converting CMYK Design To K+1PMS
My design was originally created as a CMYK. Now, it needs to be converted to a Black + one PMS. Using channels, then copying and pasting portions into a new PMS channel, I thought I had it. However, two portions of the design are not looking right, and they were grayscale from the get-go!: 1) The grayscale photo I placed in the design is very washed out and I don't know why. It almost appears like it has hard light on it. 2) The grayscale illy design that I placed in this Photoshop design is also washed out. It's almost as if the mid-range color (albeit grayscale) has been lost. Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm placing the design into an InDesign piece, and have half a mind to just delete the photo and graphic from Photoshop, and then bring them in straight into ID.....

CMYK Consistency Between Screen And Print
I am working in PhotoShop CS in CMYK. I am satisfied with my colors in PhotoShop, but when I import the graphics into InDesign, the colors dull considerably. I take this to mean they will print similarly. I have had issues with getting my CMYK files to print like they look on screen. Does anyone have any tips on how I could get what I see on the screen to match more closely what will come out of the printer?

Blacks To Specific Cmyk Values
I have line drawings in a layout that I scanned in. I'd like them to be the same or close to the black cmyk value of the text in the document. I'm not sure how to accomplish this. I tried channel adjustment and replace color, putting in the specific value I wanted (I read that c50 m40 y40 k100 was a good black for print), but nothing seems to work correctly. I would like to keep some kind of greyscale value (not make everything black), but I want the darkest shade to be that specific cmyk value. How do I do this?

Changing CMYK Graphic To Duotone
I have a 2-color logo that is in TIFF format but was created as CMYK. It is black and Pantone 323. I am using it in a two-color job and need it to be in the 2 spot colors. I changed it to grayscale and then changed it to duotone, but the colored part shows up pretty muddy and dark looking, like it has too much black in it. I have tried changing the curves but that doesn't seem to help much. If it is duotone and the colors are specified to the printer, will it print correctly, even though it looks yucky onscreen?

CMYK File Size Smaller Then RGB... Why?
I have been receiving some very simple files from a colleague and her file sizes are a 10th of what mine are. The confusing part is she is sending them in CMYK and I convert them to RGB. Theoretically they should be smaller. Dimensions and resolution are exactly the same and both are 8 bits per channel and no color profiles. She might be using an older version of Photoshop than me (currently CS3). Anyone have any ideas?

Rich Black When Converting RGB To CMYK
My problem is that I am converting RGB native images to CMYK and my Key (Black) comes out rich, contains equal levels of CMY and K, instead of true black, only k. Currently my way around this is to do the standard convert to profile CMYK and with my path selected to the section I would like to be true black simply turn off all CM and Y channels and re-save the image but this is a little labor intensive. Is there a way that I can go straight from RGB to CMYK and achieve true black without alteration?
