Layers Magazine
I just wanted to say that I'm very impressed with the magazine. I'm an avid reader of NAPP's Photoshop User, but I enjoyed reading about the other apps in the creative suite, especially since I am trying to learn more about illustrator and indesign. The cover article on CS2 workflow between apps was a very enlightening read in particular.

One thing though: in the introduction letter from Scott Kelby, he mentions that subscribers received a special bonus 'issue' on InDesign packaged with the current issue (Nov/Dec). If anyone on here is a Layers subscriber who has the indesign feature and doesnt want it or is willing to part with it, let me know. I plan on ordering a subscription, so maybe I can talk them into sending me a copy when I subscribe.

You all might say its not a logo for a magazine but I REALLY like it, way to imitate it indirectly so its not THAT noticable (the cloudy thing inside is milk inside tea if you all are wondering) I just want to know how I could imitate to do something similar (my magazine is called najwa cafe)

Magazine Scan Effect
I figure this effect should be a simple one, but I just don't get how they did it. The reason I came in here is actually that I can't seem to find out the name of the effect, so it makes it pretty impossible to search for it.

The effect I talk about is kind of like when you scan a picture from a magazine and you get the picture with all those tiny circles and lo-fi points in yellow, red, green and blue.

Printing Magazine, CMYK
I'm trying to publish a magazine for my community, and I'm using Photoshop CS3 to design the magazine. From what I know about printers and printing presses, they print using CMYK - therefore when I create my documents I've been using the CMYK 8 bit Color Mode. My resolution is set at the 300 pixels/inch, but I'm not sure what my Color Profie/Pixel Aspect Ratio should be.

I've also been told that most printing companies prefer PDF documents, and I don't know the right options to choose when saving my PSD's as PDF's through Photoshop.

I noticed my first problem when printinga sample at Kinko's. I had mostly black and white on my image, but I had a light yellow to dark yellow gradient as a background, and when it printed, banding appeared towards the lower part of the page where it should have been dark yellow. Basically that gradient wasn't smooth. I also noticed this on my computer when using a CMYK Color Mode, but it was less subtle (when I use RGB, the gradients are perfectly smooth from light to dark).

The sample I took to Kinko's was a: Flattened image, Then saved as a Photoshop PDF As a Copy ICC Profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2

I just need to know the right options to start my image, and the right options to save my image as a PDF to ensure the best print quality with no sacrifce to color, gradients, etc.

How To Do 60`s Magazine Photo Pixilation Thing
I'm looking for an effect/filter where i can turn a normal photo into an 60`s-80`s magazine photo, where the tiny microscopic circles of yellow-red-blue mix to make the correct colours, like machanic pointalism, where the image collapses if we look at it too close. I have no idea what to call this, I`d love to know. I`ve looked at the halftone effect, but it only seems to deal with two colours. is there any simple filter that can give me this effect simply?

You know in some designs, maybe the Sun Viser sticker on a car window screen would be the easiest way to describe this, its basically a pattern of dots were they start off big and joined and eventually fade to small spaced out dots... does anyone know how to do this?... Print Not Clear Having Dots
I just bought the PHOTOSHOP CS4, and I am having problem when it prints. The image is not clear, it has dots (pixels). This computer where I installed this program is brand new. I have previously worked with Photoshop CS2 and never had an issue but was force to buy this new one because the computer that I bought has Windows Vista and CS2 is not compatible. I thought maybe the problem was my printer but is not I have a Brother HL-5140 (black and white). I have connected my old computer with the printer and the images print perfectly fine. I have printed photos and it prints clear. But this only happens with Photoshop CS4. It prints dots.

Image As Dots In One Color
I want to make this effect on a photo. Its abit difficult to explain, but I'll try:

The image only contains one color, say black or red, and is put together by dots in different sizes and with different space between them, not sure, might just me different space between them. In the dark areas they are close to each other and in lighter areas they have a greater distance between each other.

I also wonder how to make the same kinda dot effect, but not with only one color. like magazies and newspaper use when they print photos. Im not reffering to the halftone filters. I tried to define a dot pattern, and delete the inverted pattern in the image, but im not satisfied with the results...

Pesky Halftone Dots
I have just aquired a copy of my great grandmother, unfortunatly it came from a newspaper or a magazine. However I would like to remove the halftoning and then later colorize it. The latter should be no problem as I've done tht before, but those pesky halftones have me stumped. I have tried using gaussian blur and unsharp mask but it looks a bit iffy if you know what I mean.

Prints From CS2?
I have recently upgraded from PS7 to CS2 and have not been able to get a decent print since. I used colour mangement with PS7 and had no problems (unfortunately I had a virus and PS7 got trashed as part of the removal of the virus). Whenever I print now I get prints that look to be oversaturated with nasty colour casts. The settings I am using are as follows:-

Print with preview
Colour Management
Print Document (Profile Adobe RGB (1998))
Color handling Let Photoshop determine colors
Printer profile Prem Semigloss 2880.icc
Rendering intent Relative Colorimetric
Black Point Compensation Checked

I then click on Print and select
Epson Stylus Photo 2100

I then click on Properties and select Premium Semigloss Photo Paper from the Media Type.

I then click on Custom and select PremSemi2880 from the dropdown (this has the Color Management set to No Color Adjustment and Photo Quality set to Super Photo 2880dpi. All other settings are unchecked)

I then click on OK and then OK again

When the Print Preview window appears it is horrible (which is what I would expect. It was like that in PS7). When I click on Print, the image looks though it is super saturated just as if the printer driver settings have been applied along with the Photoshop settings.

Make Lines Into Dots Of Different Sizes?
I'm trying to figure out how to create an image of a solid line into one with a dotted line. this isn't a matter of spacing, but rather filters of some sort (i'd imagine). See this example for the best explanation:

I had the first image (from a brush) and created the second by hand. I literally took a layer and traced the original with dots, making them larger or smaller as I went along. There must be a better way! So I'm looking for the way to convert a line of varying widths to a single dotted line of various-sized dots. make sense?

I'm looking for a something similar to the new orbit packaging.

CS3 -- Prints Too Dark
In CS3, I'm having trouble getting my prints to match the appearance on monitor -- my prints are uniformly 1-2 stops too dark, color otherwise is very good. I have calibrated my Dell monitor with Colorvision's Spyder2 colorimeter. Prints are also a hair too dark in CS2, but not as dark.

Photos and Photoshop are in RGB color space. Printer is Epson R2400 with updated drivers I just downloaded and updated into Photoshop. I also downloaded updated ICC color profiles for the Epson Premium Glossy Paper I use.

Printer settings in Photoshop are: Photoshop manages color; Adobe RGB printer profile; perceptual rendering intent; black point compensation "on"; ICM color management; color management set to "Off". I'm using North American Prepress 2 color setting. These are the exact settings Scott Kelby recommends in his "Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers" for getting calibrated prints.

PS CS4 And Dark Prints
Old: CS3 printing to Epson 3800.  New: CS4 prints dark on Epson 3800. Regardless of picture sent over.  Same settings as with CS3 and every variation I can think of.  Epson 3800 hasn't changed.  Only Adobe Photoshop version has. I can print the same pics from (example) Windows picture manager, and what I see on the CALIBRATED screen I see on the Epson, so this isn't an Epson issue.

Prints Different Than What My Monitor Shows
I am using Photoshop CS4 and I have a Canon Pixma MP160 printer. I go through a company, GotPrint.com, to print all my brochures and business cards but it seems what I send them is never what actually prints out. I understand that LCD monitors show a different display, being RGB instead of CMYK?? but how do I match it close enough? I have been trying to print out my new brochure on my printer at home until I get it to print the colors I want - but it's a huge hassle & a major ink cost changing all the colors (mostly brown for some reason) to look good printed even though it looks terrible in photoshop.

I've tried setting it in the print window to Photoshop Manages Color instead of printer. In the profile drop down I was told to select one with my printer name in it instead of working CMYK profile. But I have about 10 different ones and none of them say CMYK or anything special.

Should I use InDesign instead?

Wall Sized Prints
For too long now I have been trying without asking advice from anyone to produce wall sized prints from an A4 sized printer. I've had some successes but more failures. I once saw a retired teacher in primary school doing it with kids of eight years old. They sectioned off the image somehow and the printer printed the individual portions that were then bonded to sponge board and laminated then fixed to the wall to make the original image again.
How do you do that?

Don't understand image size, number of pixels, canvas size etc and whatever I have tried to read on this merely confuses me more. Has anyone got a simple analogy that would help me, I'm not thick but my brain doesn't seem to work well in this area.

CS3 / Epson 1280 / Dark Prints
I've been printing for years with PS 5.5, 7, CS, & now CS3.

I've always allowed Photoshop to manage colors,; No color Management selected in Printer Driver, correct paper choice as provided by media Co., correct profile as provided by media Co., in Print Dialog.

In the past, what I saw on screen was extremely close to the printed results.

I just started printing again, with CS3, and though the prints look fine on the monitor, when viewed in CS3's Print Dialog with "Match Print Colors" / Soft Proof selected, the image not only turns much darker, but there is absolutely no hint of highlight "pop" left----Even the effect of sharpening disappears. The white borders even turn to a dull, bluish gray & the entire image assumes a dark, flat, dull appearance, and that's the way it prints!

This occurs with image files that have printed fine previously, and have not been altered in any way.

I've tried reinstalling the Printer driver,

I also noticed all of my other prints to pdf were 72 dpi, suddenly this one is 121 PPI. The PDF is black and white, although the original document is full color, and it has the moire pattern of a scan taken at the wrong resolution, a pattern of little squares all over.
