Scratch Disk/temp Files
On my system I have small(330Mb) virtual RAM-disk R: . My system configured so that all temp-files, cookies, cache... all placed on this disk R: . Now - I try to work with Photoshop CS. I know, that 330Mb isn't enough for work files for Photoshop, so I try to tell it: "Use real hard-drive C: for you scratch file(s)". For that I went to "Preferences->Plug Ins & Scratch Disks" and set _ALL FOUR_ scratch disks to "C:". All the same - when I start my work Photoshop CS create it's temp file(name like "Photoshop Temp4122672") exactly on R:, not on C:! Of course after 10min. of work I have stable error: And so - how to force PS to use C: as storehouse for temp-files?

Massive Scratch Disk Files In CS3/CS4,...
I've been working on a large file (1.02Gb, yes it is large (A1) with lots of necessary layers) that has initially been saved as the new large image .psb format. However the issue is that in CS3 and CS4, when trying to open the file up it creates absolutely massive scratch disc files that fill up my (80Gb) scratch disc. As a result the file will not open. However when I open it in CS2, the scratch disc files are nowhere near as big and the file opens up OK. Is this just a CS3/CS4 issue or am I missing something?

How To Set Up Scratch Disk
I added a second hard drive and would like to know how to best set it up for use as a scratch disk. The default in the Plug-Ins & Scratch Disks dialogue box was: First: Startup Second: None Third: None Fourth: None I'm wondering if I should change the first to the new drive or keep it as "startup" and add the new drive to second.

Scratch Disk
I need to switch my scratch disk from my computer hard drive to a networked hard drive. How do I do this? I go to Edit>Preferences>Performance and see where it has my hard drive 'checked' in the Scratch Disk window, but I don't see any option on how to add another scratch disk. Can someone help me with this?

I had to system restore. Virus gone, BUT, seems as though my Photoshop kind of reset itself. Becuase when I opened it, the template was different (I used to have only 2 windows on the right, it reset itself to open with 4 windows) and when I used to create a new file the background was the transparent checkered pattern, and now it's just a plan white background, so something obviously reset. I go to create a new photo, and I use a VERY simple too, I use the Paint Bucket to fill a 500x500 image, Photoshop has a lilttle load bar come up so it can LOAD to fill my little space, and if i let it sit, it will eventually say "Scratch Disk is Full". Now, I've gone online to see how to fix that. I've found multiple FAQ sites. And this is what I've done to still no avail: 1. I've gone into Preferences and set the Scratch Disk location to my C:// drive that it previously was. 2. Set it so that 100% of my RAM can be used for Photoshop 3. Defragmented my C:// Drive 4. Searched for any ~PSD temp files, my computer said it found none.

Scratch Disk
I'm running CS3 on a lenovo ideapad y510. Though most programs are loaded on the main partition drive C:, the partition is a "recovery" partition and has only enough space for the OS and recovery files. The partition used for storing things on my notebook is drive D:, example being the my music and my photos folders - which I had to change manually in the properties of each folder when I first got this thing. When I loaded CS3, about a year ago, it was installed to the main OS partition, C: which only ever has about 3 - 4 GB worth of free space. So when I'm working on multiple canvases, with multiple files open in CS3, I'm always running out of scratch disk space. My plan was to somehow change it to use drive D:, with more than 100 GB free space. So I discovered that I can go into the preferences dialog and change the location CS3 uses as scratch disk space - cool, I changed it from C: to D:, the larger partition. But when I did, then restarted CS3, it gives me an error that says, "could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked. Use the properties command in windows explorer to unlock the file." Over and Over. So then the only way to start CS3 is to run as administrator, but even then it's not running right, I loose drag and drop functionality from windows explorer, and have difficulty saving. But I didn't know this was related to the scratch disk location being changed until I learned that I needed to delete the preferences folder contents by starting CS3 while holding ctrl-alt-shift, then going back into preferences noticing that the scratch disk was set back to C: (so effectively deleting that folder's contents returns CS3 to default settings). I repeated the process and got the same error, so I am sure it's the scratch disk location. So my question is, does the scratch disk location have to be on the same physical drive as where CS3 is installed in order to not get this error? I can't resize the partition, so I'm wondering whether I am stuck with performing smaller batch operations.

When I attempt to load photoshop, A pop up box appears saying that the selected scratch disks are almost full, and there are 4 drop down boxes: First, Second, Third, Fourth. With the "First", with either Startup or C drive selected, photoshop won't load. This pop up box has never appeared before. So, when I press ok on this box, photoshop continues to load for a few seconds then it states that it cannot continue loading because there was an error that it couldn't recover from! There are no PST temporary files located on my computer, And it isn't the "working with large image" problem because I don't even GET to open photoshop in the first place!

Scratch Disk/RAM/HDD
I am now working with 10megapixel images, just basic post processing i.e. saturation, curves, and sharpening. My question is as follows. I have a 1.6ghz dell laptop, with 1gb ram, and 80gb hd with about 32gb free. Sometimes when batch processing (50 to 100 photos) at once, Ill get the scratch disk full error. I know its not a good idea to have the scratch and OS on the same drive, but not much I can do about it. I'm thinking about getting another gig of ram to bring me up to a total of 2gb, and a 500gb external hard drive. I can move the photos (about 20gigs worth) to the external, then i'd have about 50gigs free on my internal. I know an external is not the best for scratch, but again it will only be if I use the 50gb on my internal first. I will eventually have to get another HD anyway for these huge images. So will a total of 2gb ram, 50gigs free on internal for primary scratch, and the remainder of my 500gb external for secondary scratch, give me a noticeable improvement?

I am getting a "Scratch disk almost full" message when I start up PS. I'm using v7.0 on XP. The first disk offers me the option of C:/ or Startup. When I select startup it complains its almost full but I can't find out where it is so I can empty it! If I select C:/ it complains about sharing with windows and I don't know how to offer any further alternative.

How much hard drive space should be allocated to photoshop? We are working with files at times exceeding 6GB. We have 32GB of RAM and a few hard drives, internal and external. Second: the size of my Documents folder is no more than 250gb and the capacity of the system hard drive is 500. What else could possibly take up so much room? the programs take up about 50gb so im left with 200 missing GB?

Scratch Disk Full In PS CS2
I just put PS CS2 on my laptop today (dell latitude d610 with win xp), and as soon as I started running it I ran into a Scratch Disk Full error... not by cropping or anything big... but just using the pen tool on a 500x500 72ppi file. I've been using CS4 for the past week or so with no problems, but didn't want to fork out the ridiculous price to keep it past the trial, so decided to go with CS2 as I've used it on another computer of mine and the price was good. Is it possible I could be getting this error because of old PS files that weren't fully removed? I did the uninstall of CS4 before I downloaded CS2 so ??? I also did install CS2 before but wouldn't allow me to activate it because it was already on another comp. I also heard it could be because of a lack of memory on the drive I use for the scratch disks, but I have almost 10 gigs free on the drive I'm using as my secondary (c:), not sure about the one I have as primary (startup). I'm using that as primary because it was there as a default, though I'm not sure what it is. And I did try them vice versa as well and still got the error.

Scratch Disk Error
Lately when I try to crop an image in Photoshop CS2 (9.0.1) I get the message that the function could not be completed because the scratch disk was full. I only have a "C" drive and I have over 15 gig free. I have optimized the hard drive and that didn't do anything . Can someone help me with this problem?

It's about time I replaced my 5400RPM Drive for a 7200RPM unit. At the moment I have a partition used as Photoshop's Scratch disk. Just wondering if it would be wiser to keep the 5200RPm unit as a seperate scratch disk, or have a faster partition on the 7200RPM unit.

Something Weird With Scratch Disk...
I've recently switched to a new pc with Vista-64. After installing my CS3 I tried to give it a test to see how it performs. Medium sized files run very fast on difficult filters such as Lens blur. But when I open a large file like 300mb and try to run a Lens Blur filter on it, things get very slow for this PC. I think it takes 3-4min to complete the task. What also bothers me is CS3 is writing/using on a external HD that's not chosen to be used as a scratch disk. I noticed this as I see the blue lights get active on the WD external HD. Then I checked what's happaning in the disk going to my computer. When I look into the HD I see bunch TMP files written during this filter task. Same type of files (different sizes)are also seen in the dedicated scratch disk. Is it normal that CS3 will access other HD's eventhough they are not chosen as Scratch disks or is it there anything wrong with my CS3 or OS? Also I believe that I should get a better performance with my setup, anything you might suggest? My computer: Gigabyte EX38T-DQ6 motherboard, Intel Core2 Extreme x9650, Vista 64-bit, 4GB DDR3 RAM, OS, other programs and CS3 located on 4 WD Raptor HD's configured as RAID 0+1, separate 70GB Raptor HD for scratch disk, all photo files are stored on 2 750GB Lacie HD's as RAID 1 and I have one WD external 2 TB HD for back up connected with Firewire800. This is the one that's being accessed by CS3.

Scratch Disk Placement
I am running PS7 on an XP SP2 system with 512 MB ram and a slow processor. I have two internal hard drives and have tried many times to assign the scratch disk to my second drive which is the largest and fastest. When I do this, Photoshop will not open and I have to delete the preference file in order to get the program to run. What could be causing Photoshop not to recognize my second drive on startup?

I have a 173G boot/Windows/programs disk and a 3-disk RAID5 array for data. I know the scratch disk should be on a 5th disk, but I don't have one. If I put the scratch disk on the boot drive, as far as performance goes, does it matter if it's in a separate partition or not?

Work Stoppage Because Of Scratch Disk...
I began receiving the error message Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full. I deleted all the large files from my hard drive, and the problem went away. Now, I am working on a large Photoshop file (i.e., 585,155kb). I am working at 300 ppi for print reproduction, using multiple layers. I am opening each new image to be added to the master document in a separate Photoshop window. I set the resolution of each at 300 ppi, then crop and transfer to its new layer in the master file (using drag and drop). After I crop and transfer, I close the open window of the file I just cropped and transferred. No other programs are running. This seems to be fairly standard stuff. All was fine (although very slow) until two nights ago. When cropping, I received the error Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full. Once again, I researched scratch disk error messages, and I came to the conclusion I had no choice but to increase my RAM. So, I upgraded from 512MB to 2 GIG. (I successfully opened my PC and installed the RAM myself, confirming it on the Properties window. A major success, as the RAM was costly, and difficult to find, so I saved some money and time by installing it myself!) With great enthusiasm and excitement, I opened the master Photoshop file again and the next image to be set to 300 ppi, cropped, and transferred over to a layer. But, when I tried to crop, I received the SAME sickening message, Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full. How can this be? I have four times the RAM I had before, which was costly, and I expected Photoshop to work swift and smooth with this new, more efficient increase in RAM. I am simply bewildered. I tried changing my Scratch Disks to C: rather than Startup, but then I received the error message You currently have Adobe Photoshops primary Scratch and Windows primary paging file on the same volume, which can result in reduced performance. It is recommended that you set Adobe Photoshops primary Scratch volume to be on a different volume, preferably on a different physical drive. More scratch disk torture. None of this makes any sense, and, while Photoshop error messages are upsetting, they dont explain what you should do. I am not a programmer, and I am totally stumped. I know that someone somewhere upgraded their RAM and still received a Scratch disk error too, so I hope someone can advise me on what I need to do next. I cannot continue my work and just spent a lot of money on RAM.

I have the PhotoDelux home edition that came installed on my computer (using Windows XP). Now I can not open any more pictures with the program because it is telling me that the scratch disk is full. Changing Scratch Disk Folder Location
I'm on an office network running photoshop. The office is set up to have roaming profiles so when a change is made to my documents and settings, each time I log in or log out, it updates the server with the changes. Additionally, when I log on to a different computer, it loads all of my documents and settings on to that computer. The scratch disk file for photoshop last time I checked was 6GB which is enormous, and was taking forever to load whenever I log onto a new computer, as well as taking forever to up date to and from the server each time I log on to my usual computer. I delete the file each time I remember, but I don't always remember. My question is whether it is possible to change the folder location on my C drive of the scratch disk file. I do not have an external hard drive available to use as my scratch disk. This would allow me to put it somewhere else on my C drive, and as such it would not have to update my profile.

Scratch Disk On External Hard Drive
I have photoshop CS2 on my desktop computer (XP). The hard drive is partitioned and I have photoshop scratch disk on its own partition (10GB). I have photoshop CS3 on my laptop (Vista Premium, 2GB ram). There is only one hard drive in the laptop. It is already partitioned into three - C drive: windows + programs, S drive: system files, X drive: recovery. My question is do I keep my scratch drive on the C drive or can/should I partition an external hard drive (250GB) and put my photoshop scratch disk on there? The external drive is via USB.

Folder Temp Files Not Available
when I start CS3 the startup stops and I get this message: The folder specified for temporary files is not available. The default folder will be used. After I click OK, the startup resumes. I have tried scratch disk (turning it on and off), but this does not seem to help. Also, I cannot find this folder (where is it, ore where should it be?). Windows XP pro SP3 RAM: 4GB Free disk space: 60GB on C, 380GB on scratch disk.

HUGE Photoshop CS4 Temp Files! (55 Gigs!)
I just started to try to clean up my hard drive and using CCleaner I found that I had 70 GIGS OF FILES IN TEMP! most of this is made up of a 55 gig photoshop temp file and a bunch of 300-750 MB photoshop temp files. I am just wondering why these are in there, why they are so big, and if I can safely delete them.

My pshop temp file is very large with nothing open. I reset my prefs and it still remains the same. It was 65 megs now it is 130. Is there some other file or files I need to delete? I haven't add any filters actions etc. Pshop has the original files. I am running pshop 7 on W2K. My memory is set at 40% with no history cache and I have the pics turned off on the layers palette. Just trying to understand why it is growing even after a prefs reset. I did a print screen of a clients site and brought that into pshop to make a psd and since then the temp file has doubled. That is why I reset the prefs thinking somehow this file was still in the clipboard cache but the reset did not help the temp file size. The temp file is on a seperate hard drive for the primary and the secondary is on the E drive.

Orange Temp V2
i started a v2 of my portfolio site. At the bottom of the page there is javascript to chnage the back gound 4 different colors which all look well with the page. Just a opinion on how it looks so far. I just ordered a new digital camera so once i get that i will have a few photographs with a hue of a darker orange to the left of the text that will be in the content box. As of now it lays blank.

Cropping A Pic Is Creating A 64 Gig Temp
Not sure what's going on here, but when I crop a picture I'm immediately filling all the available space on my hard drive which happens to be 64gigs! Once I get the scratch disk error due to filling up the hd and click Ok the temp file automatically gets rid of it's self. The crop settings are Width=800in Height=600in Resolution=400 pixels/INCH I have NO IDEA what the default crop settings should be and am wondering if someone really knocked these out of whack? Temp File Folder
I have a problem with the Temp File folder. I know that photoshop cs4 uses a lot of scratch disk space and I have about 250 gbs of free space on the hard drive. I am working with very large files that exceed 4GBs at times and the free space on the hard drive is alway diminishing. Should i delete the temp files or is there a way to set how much data gets stored in the folder? Another question is, should i assign other drives for scratch disk space? i have 3 other hard drives but they are not as fast as the system hd. and if you have tips on tuning the computer for better performance would be greatly appreciated. 64gig Temp File
I have a 64gig Photoshop temp file on one of my users machines that is completely filling up the hard drive. When Photoshop is running the file is undeletable since it's in use, BUT when I close out of Photoshop it completely vanishes from the PC! This is a graphical representation of the hard drive and you can see how this is a problem lol. Now when I close Photoshop I'm instantly showing that I have 60gigs of free space again and that file is no where to be found.

PS Keeps Searching The A: Disk
I am using Photoshop 6. Since I have loaded a picture from a floppy disk, Photoshop keeps searching the a:/ disk of my computer with almost every action I do (selecting a tool, opening the layer style window, selecting a layer, what ever) Every time I hear the sound of the computrer searching for a floppy, that is not there, and see the light of the a: drive flickering. It makes working with PS rather slow. This only happens with PS not with other programs. And it continues after resetting the computer.

Lost Disk
I have an old computer with PS CS installed (an upgrade version based on an original PS 7 install). I now have a new computer (instead of, not in addition to the old one!), need to install CS on that, and cannot for the life of me find the PS 7 install disk. I have the CS install disk, and I have the S/Ns for both, but not the PS 7 disk. The CS disk won't install because it can't find an installed product.

PS On Win And Disk Fragmentation
Is it possible that there could be a coorelation between heavy useage of Photoshop and the fragmentation of a hard drive on a Windows platform? I've experienced some problems with my day-to-day computer tasks and I'm trying to pinpoint the problems. Moving To A New Hard Disk
My computer hard disks is full and I have nearly 10,000 pictures. I have purchased a 2nd hard disk and would like to move my pictures to the new disk. Cannot Run Batch Actions. (Disk Not Available)
I Can't run batch actions. I'm trying to run batch actions from the file browser in CS and it say it can't because the "Disk is not available". I made sure my scratch disc was designated, and it has my primary partition as the 1st and the other partion is the 2nd. The files I'm working from are on the same partition as the System files and there is 15gb available.
