Checking Modem, Video Memory And DirectX In System
Hello,
I need to detect some hardwares on the system. Is there anyone who can provide me help on all or any of these?
Detecting if there is any modem instlaled on the system or not?
What is the memory size of video card in system?
which version of directX is installed on the system?
Note that for modem, I do not want to use MSCom control. I am going to create an ActiveX control which will be downloaded to client and hense, I need minimum dependencies.

DirectX 7 System Memory Surfaces
Question: I want to load a bunch of data screens and then "move" them to video memory at different points in my games. At first I thought I should just keep them on the hard drive and then load them into video memory as needed, but then since my data screens are only around 4 meg or total, why not load them into system memory and simply copy them over to a video memory surface as needed.
So, do you think keeping them in system memory is fine, or should I keep them on the hard drive and load them individually into a video memory surface when needed?
I mean most computers have gobs of system memory available, I would think 100megs of graphic data files in system memory would not be a problem???

Live Video Program, DirectX?
Hello,
I have to develop a live video program. I need to show a transparent logo(s) on a main video screen. In the main video window, a sub video windows should appear at specefied location which will be playing a defferent video. Another small portion should play a flash file and at the lower side a scrolling message should appear. Finally I must be able to draw some transperent graphics on main live video window.
I want to know various posiblities to do the above things. I believe above things may involve many Windows API calls or any such stuff, so kindly let met know any info. regarding overlaying video display, transparent windows , drawing on live video window etc.
I don't know anything about DirectX in Visual Basic. What are the posiblities of above requirements in DirectX. Is it a good idea to look for a DirectX solution at this level?

[VB] Checking For Other Instances Of DirectX
Hello,
I am working on a VB program that reminds users of various events during the day. However I dont want to disrupt their programs they are using with a nasty 'ol dialog box. For instance: if they are playing a game, I dont want my program interrupting it and making them lose. However, I dont think that they would mind if my dialog box intruded on their web-browsing. I thought a good way to do this would be to check if there is an instance of DirectX or OpenGL currently running. I googled around, and couldnt find any way to do this, and was hoping that someone here might know how to check and see if directx is running.
Checking Internet Connection With Cable Modem
Hi,
I'm wanting to check when the computer is online or offline and it seems the only way to do this is to constantly ping every few seconds. With a cable modem every API call shows there is a connection even when I turn off the modem.
Any other ways without pinging but truely knowing when the internet connection is there or not?
Also, won't pinging bring up the dialup part for a dialup computer when it tries to ping? How do you think programs like AIM and others detect it so fast?

As the windows 'memory usage' stays constant I can only suspect that the textures are loaded into the Video memory and not in the system's RAM. My question is how can I check what is the current usage of the video memory on the graphics card. Does anyone know a utility program that can show me the memory usage. Also, can this thing be checked using VB, so i can integrate this into my program ?

Read Data Directly From Video Memory?
I have created this capture program, which captures the entire screen every second or so, but it gets pretty slow...
I was wondering if there's any other way than using the GDI API, for example by directly accessing the memory addresses form the video memory and pulling out data ?

Operating System Checking
Without devging into any complex api calls or functions that are a page long, is there a way that I can detect an OS while my form loads. Specifically, my form loads with certain paths to win2k and pulls info. I want my form to be able to do the same with XP. Im sure I could write an if statement or case select if I only had xp here at the home. Does anyone know an easy way I could detect the difference between the two, ie a certain system file I could do an "if file exist" on, or something similar and just as easy.

Error Checking System Call
For a project where I work, I am supposed to make a program that will map a network drive (note: I am constrained to VB 6.0). I have the program doing that, but I don't know how to pinpoint where an error accurs.
example: If the user types in their password incorrectly, they need to be told that their password was incorrect not that explorer couldn't open the drive.
'Shell' only returns the processing number, and 'ShellExecute' only complains if the program cannot be found. What I am using is 'net', so 'ShellExecute' finds it and then runs. So as long as net.exe can be found, it is happy. I would be very happy if someone could tell me what I can do so that I can get whatever net.exe returns. Thanks to anyone that can help.
[VB] Checking If ICON Is In The System Tray
I have noticed that sometimes when I leave a windows 98/ 2000 box running my application for a number of days my Icon in the system tray disappears while the task manager says the application is still running. Is there a way I can tell if my icon is visable in the system tray? so if it is not I can add/modify it.

Checking The System Font From My Control<RESOLVED>
I am guessing that containers like Outlook-style explorer controls must get the font settings from the system since they don't expose a font property. My control will have a titlebar with a caption, sort of like the one above the treeview in Explorer. I need to set the height of the titlebar by the height of the font, but I'm not sure how to check if the user has large font settings. Can somebody point me in the direction of whatever api I might need? thanks

i knew that there is one such api was available in vb4 ie. GetFreeSystemMemory and that is only for 16 bit applications(except globalsystemstatus)

SQL 6.5 System Memory/sp
Help me out, people. This is going to be a long one.
I am running an intranet front-end to a SQL server 6.5 database. I have a recordset-returning stored procedure which is used to return summary information about a list of records describing financial transactions. It runs four SQL statements using three temporary tables in the following way: first statement selects records with "where" clause into temporary table1.
Second statement selects sum information with cube from table1 into table2.
Third statement groups information appropriately and sums form table2 into temporary table3.
Fourth statement returns all of table3 with appropriate column headers.
All this, no problem. But : now the user has asked for count information along with sum, so I have added the appropriate fields to statements 2, 3 and 4. Now, when run from the intranet, I receive msg 701 :Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]There is insufficient system memory to run this query.
When I run the procedure more locally with isql, first I receive the intended results, then the same message, then the results. Exactly every other time I run the query I receive the error, and every alternate time I receive the results.
I have checked the server out and there simply isn't a shortage of memory.
What the hell is going on?
Anybody encountered something similar?
What can possibly cause an error on every second execution?

System Tray With Low Memory Need
I need a systray icon with my program. It is a very small program, and without icon it uses 900K ram. When I add a systray icon, it uses over 4MB of ram. This is just too much. How can I fix this? Is there a way to have a systrayicon with low memory needs...?
Btw, I tried a lot of systray ocx-es but they all used a lot of ram. I only need to click the icon to bring the program up front.

I was trying to do it by the registry since alot of my program calls the stuff from there however I cant seem to find the Physcial Memory in there so I assume it has to be done another way that way im not sure how so im looking to see if someone can give me something to work with.

You can ignore the body of that code, it gets a bit messy. But basically, at the top, it checks to see if the username = the pass (found using a vlookup) and if it is equal, then it logs them in, but if it isnt, it should go to the 'else' code and display an error message. I cant work out why it doesnt do this...it highlights this area of code:

Operating System Memory Management
I am dumbfounded by a memory management problem that seems to vary greatly between operating systems.
I am developing a system that uses an MDI frame, in which the user can open multiple instances of the same form. The child form is very large, with 200 controls. This includes two nested tab controls, several list views, and lots of combo boxes with pre-loaded lists.
Admittedly, this should use up some significant memory. I have no problem with this. However, the memory usage between Windows NT and Windows 95 is staggering. My development machine uses NT, and I can open 10 or 15 instances of the MDI child with no problem. Each instance uses about 2MB. End users are running Win95, and they can open only 2 or 3 instances before running out of memory. On Windows 95, each instance uses about 15MB.
We are replacing a character-based Progress system, and users really appreciate the gee-whiz functionality of GIU, but it looks like I will have to take away a feature that was a real selling point.
Any ideas??

Can anyone help me...If you create a game that has a score at the end of it, how is it possible to commit that score to memory when the app. closes, so that on re-exe the last score can be displayed i.e

Secondly...I have had to buy at least 4 VB books in a vain attempt to to get literature on all aspects of the subject, only to find that there are still aspects not covered.
Can anyone suggest a book that really DOES cover everything.

I created a form, what do a system tray icon, but my big problem, that it's use too much memory.
When I minimize the form and after hide it, then the memory usage decrease.
But if I hide immediately without any windowstate change, it use much memory.
How can I solve, that the program clear the form apperiance from the memory??
Or anything else, that decrease the memory usage...

Free Some System Memory When Our Porogram Is Running

I made a program that uses a timer to go every 1 second to a mysql database check possible changed and if changes appears it changes the program. well I could identify that this operation passed 8 hours blocks my computer. It eats about 1mb per minute. The question is how can I free some system memory to avoid it crashes.
By the way do you know a possible better way ro access a database in a short interval time with put the computer so slow?

4: MSDN has a section on serial communications with API code in C++.. i do not know C and have at least 70 modems to configure before august. I need to automate this process. all the activex controls i have seen tell you how to work with modems already installed not how to install them with the API windows uses. they all claim to expose everything the windows code does, but there is no Addmodem function.. I guess that is what i need.

Dear all,
I have a problem with my application..
The conception of my program seems to be ok, however, every time I am
running it, it blocks regularly on my dll and shows the following message
<<Execution error '-2147024889 (80070007)':
System error &H800700007 (-2147024889). Memory control blocks
have been destroyed.>>
By clicking "enter" the program continues normally in 99% of all cases and
the main code seems to be fine.
What I do understand of this error message is that the dll essaie tries to
write on memory block to which it has no access rights.
Is this part of my understanding ok ?
Should I be right, the solution would be to control the allocation of memory
