MSDN Library Installation
I was able to successfully install the MSDN Library using the three required disks; however, when I click the F1 key within Microsoft Visual Basic, I get the following error message: "Attempting to use an invalid compiled help (.chm) file." When I click the MSDN Library icon on my desktop, I receive a different message: "Cannot Open the C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN2001APR1033MSDN110.COL." Any suggestions you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Visual Studio 6.0 MSDN Library Re-installation Not Working.....
I installed Visual Basic 6.0 and was working with it for a while. I then got to a point where I decided having the MSDN library installed would speed my progress along, so I installed the complete MSDN library for Visual Studio 6.0
Everything was working up until a week ago in which I lost access to a couple of controls and also lost access to the complete MSDN library. I would click the Help menu and would get an error.
Anyway, utilizing help provided from this forum, I performed the following tasks in the order listed:
- unregister the two controls which were "lost" (ie: Richtextbox and CommonDialog)
- uninstall Visual Studio 6.0
- uninstall the MSDN library
- reinstall Visual Studio 6.0
- install the latest VB service pack 6
- reinstall the MSDN library
After doing these steps, my two "lost" controls were know back and I could continue utilizing their functions. As for the Visual Studio 6 MSDN library, everything was loaded except the library information relating to Visual Basic 6.0, which is the only library information I care to access (ie: do not need to access Visual C++, Visual J+, etc... ). I can click on the Help menu and the MSDN library comes up, but if you scroll through the list of libraries included, Visual Basic 6.0 is no longer listed. As a result, I can not look anything up as it relates to Visual Basic 6.0. This makes it hard for a new Visual Basic programmer to really progress nicely. Yeah, I know I can look up stuff in the MSDN library at microsoft's website, but that is very slow and it also seems like it does not provide the same type of "examples" which I have been use to seeing in the local MSDN library stuff.
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas how to get back my Visual Basic 6.0 MSDN library files so I can browse help locally? Do I need to unregister the MSDN library somehow first?
PS: I tried uninstalling the MSDN library for Visual Studio 6.0 and then custom reinstalling only the Visual BAsic 6.0 portion of the MSDN Visual Studio 6.0 data, but that did not work either.
MSDN Library
I have lost my MSDN disks for VB 6.0. Does anybody know of a source for download or purchase of a replacement, anything from Jan 2000 to July 2001?
Thanks

SDK VS MSDN Library
Hello everyone,
I was thiking about ordering a Platform SDK CD Online from Microsoft Website. I am a little confused on the SDK Kit. Is this the same material as what is in the MSDN Library or is it more detailed information? The reason I ask I found some sample code and scrips from the msdn library that works great. However, I would like to explore more options with that control and dll. I was wondering if the SDK would go into more detail.
I would appreciate any information on this issue.
Thanks
Dan
MSDN Library...
My PC needs a disk cleanup badly. I must have about a zillion gig of MSDN. My question is this...
If I have more than one version of the MSDN Libray, is it safe to uninstall all of the older versions? Or do the newer versions share the older versions' files?
Thanks

Complete newbie question here. I'm a student and have installed a student
licensed version of VB6. The MSDN library/help files are on a seperate disc
but for the life of me I cannot work out how to get it installed. It doesn't
boot up automatically like the VB6 disc and there are no obvious help files
when I explore the disc.

Problem With My MSDN Library
Hello everyone. I've been struck with quite an odd problem:
When I try looking through the help files in VB 6 (MSDN Library), (which I should note worked perfectly at one point in time) I do not have the option of selecting VB documentation in the active subset combobox. I can select any of the other documentation, but VB seems to have just disappeared from the combo box. I should also point out that "Repository 2.0 Documentation" appears 11 times in the combo box.
I have no idea what's wrong, and I know that by reinstalling I could probably fix the problem. But, I was just wondering if you guys know what the problem is, or what could have caused it.
Thanx
MSDN Library Question
Hi all,
My MSDN Library Visual Studio 6.0 suddely shows many "*Visual C++. Platform SDK and Win CE Docs" but no "Visual Basic Reference' in the Active Subset dropdown list box. Do you have any idea what happened?
I removed it and then re-instal but it can't help. Please advise if you have similar experience before. Thanks.

MSDN Library Problem
Having a problem with my MSDN library. When I look up a VB statement the statement defination comes up OK. But the place where the example, related terms, ect. now shows only as blank little boxes. I have tried reloading visual studio, MSDN libraryies all with no change. It is like the connection to where these items are stored is lost. I am at a loss on this so all help is greatly appreciated.
MSDN Library Viewer
My MSDN Library Visual Studio 6.0 (Help for VB6) has broken. It no longer displays Properties, Methods, Events options when displaying a control (ie: ListBox) definition the way it used to. Instead I get a little box with an "X" in it. I've reloaded the MSDN Library with no improvement.
Does anyone know how to turn these options back on?

MSDN Library Doesn't Look Right
Does anyone have the following problem with their help.
If I hightlight a keyword in VB6, it goes to the appropriate help page, but
the "Example", "Applies to", etc on the top don't show. It just shows little
misformed boxes in their place. If I click on one of the misformed boxes, it
does nothing.
Also, if I click on an underlined keyword to go to that page, I get an I.E
error "An error has occured in the script on this page". "Object doesn't
support this property or method".
I uninstalled the MSDN library and reinstalled it. Still doesn't work. I
did a repair on my Internet Explorer, and that didn't help either.
I'm running VB6 SP3 on a Windows 2000 machine using Internet Explorer 6.0
SP1.
Has anyone come across a similar problem.
Where Can I Download MSDN Library?
Can someone tell me where I can download msdn library. I'm looking for the help files of MS Visual Basic 6. I belive they are in msdn library.

MSDN Library For Visual Studio 6
It is not the first time that I experience this particular problem. I’m using Visual Studio 6 on Windows XP Pro and am experiencing a problem regarding MSDN Library for Visual Studio 6. On previous installations all was working fine, yet after several recent attempts the links contained within MSDN Library, i.e. “See Also”, “Example” etc. seem to be malfunctioning. I’ve tried reinstalling MSDN Library, tried complete reinstallations (using different installation routines such as OS -> Office -> VS -> MSDN and OS -> VS -> MSDN -> Office and OS -> VS ->MSDN) but nothing seems to reactivate the links.
Does anyone have any advice?

HOW?
January 2002 MSDN Library.
umm, I'm trying to find some info about GET function and I can't. Also standard OPEN function is replaced with FILEOPEN, no reference to OPEN function. What's going? Did Microsoft cut out old VS 6 functions and replaced everything with .NET functions? Or what?
MSDN Library - VB Active Subset Misssing?
Hello there,
I have a strange problem:
When I try to use help files in VB 6 ( I have MSDN Library 6.0a installed and it has worked in the past) I do not have the option of selecting VB documentation in the active subset combobox. It seems as though the entire vb help file has disappeared.
I have tried to re-instrall MSDN which didn't work, then I tried to re-install all of visual studio and msdn and still doesn't work. Can someone shed some light on this for me, I'm getting desperate.
Thank you for your help
Free MSDN Library For Download (from Microsoft)
Disk 1: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...qtr40enud1.img
Disk 2: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...qtr40enud2.img
Disk 3: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...qtr40enud3.img
it works as I have downloaded it and installed it.
Just Read This From The MSDN Library... (about MdiChild Loading..)
(following my previous post)
In the MSDN library it says..
"If you load a Form whose MDIChild property is set to True (in other words, the child form) before loading an MDIForm, the MDIForm is automatically loaded before the child form.MDI child forms cannot be hidden, and thus are immediately visible after the Form_Load event procedure ends."
Does anyone know a way round that? so that I can load up the MDIChild form at start up but not show it?
The main reason I want to do that is cos I have a large form.. and thus it takes time to load. So I want it to load at the start of the program while the users see the splash screen.
Any ideas?
thanks!
Abdul
Visual Studio - MSDN Installation
Hi all!
I have an installation problem.
I've installed Visual Studio on a new PC that has MSDN already installed, so I didn't reinstalled it.
And here's the problem: I can't access MSDN (which is used as Visual Studio help) from the IDE.
Any suggestion?

MSDN Library Missing Disk 2 / Resolved By KaZaa
Hi,
I purchased VB6 learning edition through an eBay auction and it arrived in a sealed by Microsoft package complete with MSDN Library disk 1 but no disk 2. Microsoft denied knowledge of the missing disk 2 issue and inquired as to where I purchased the software. When informed that it was purchased through an eBay auction they excuse themselves from liability even though it was sealed.
Seeing as how I wasn't learning anything from the learning edition I decided to purchase VB6 Pro which I also acquired through an eBay auction and it arrrived in a sealed by Microsoft package complete with MSDN Library disk 1 but again no disk 2.
I finally got a reply back from a MS representative and he acknowleged that he was aware of the missing disk 2 issue and vowed that he would sent it to me. I received another e-mail that referenced the previous REP and stated that I was not eligable for a replacement disk because I did not purchased the software from an authorized vendor.
Is there anyone in the reading audience that has had this problem and if so were you able to find a means of correcting it?

Visual Basic 6.0: Installation, MSDN CD Needed
Hello all,
I searched the faq and the tutor area and didnt see my question referenced anywhere.
I just installed Visual Basic 6.0 under Windows XP that I purchased from ebay. When I try to click on the help it says that I need an MSDN cd for a collection to get access to the help, but I did not get any other CD when I purchased Visual Basic 6.0.
Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know if this cd is available for purchase or download ??
Thanks

ActiveX Installation (aka *.ocx Installation)
The problem is the following. I downloaded two activeX controls. One is called SuperText which is an advanced text box. The other is called avToolTips which is said to allow tool tips capabilities beyond the normal ones found in VB. I simply would like to install these components (both of which are freeware) but I do not know how to. With SuperText I have two files :
- SuperText.ocx
- SuperText.tcl
With avToolTips I have the following files :
- avToolTips.ocx
- avToolTips.cnt
- avToolTips.gld
- Msstkprp.dll
Normally when you have a project open (in Visual Basic 6 which I use) you just go to the project window on the right hand side and right click. A pop-up menu comes up. You go to "ADD" and then User Control. From there you select the tab that says "existing" and a dialog box comes up requestion a file of the following type :: " *.ctl " . So as long as your activeX file(s) end in *.ctl you're OK. As you can see from the two above lists, neither of the two end in *.ctl. So my question is, given the above files that I have how may I install or incorporate these activeX files into my project?
Another question is, does anyone out there know if there's a freeware "advanced richtextbox" activeX control available for download? I tried this one called Xeditor, but the references are superabundant and again I am unable to install this one. This latter control is located at
HardCore3.zip @ http://hspf.com/pub/misc/
In no case have I been able to install anything.

MSDN Help
Hi guys, I have used VB 5 Pro for a couple years and I finally upgraded to VB 6 Pro back a few months ago. My problem is when I try to use the help within VB 6 I get a error message asking to re-install the MSDN package. I cannot find it to re-install it. Anyone know where I can find it? I have been using help in VB 5 so I can work in 6, but I would like to have the latest help, plus I'm sick of having to have 5 and 6 both open at the same time.
Thankx,
Jason

MSDN And Help
I have not been using Visual Basic 6 for a while now, but when I try to access the help files by pressing F1 I now get a dialog box asking for the install location for MSDN.
When I navigate to where MSDN is installed it will not accept.
I have loaded Vs2005, so could this be the problem.
I have reinstalled MSDN and I still get the same - really annoying response when I press F1.
Any help would be appreciated.
