Reading A USB Port

How do I read data from a USB port?

I am trying to build a custom VB6 app for my JamStudio drawing pad. The only thing I need to do with the board is detect the position of the stylus so I can use that information in my app. The company seems to have gone out of business, since both domains (www.jamonline.com and www.kbinteractive.com) are inoperative. I've searched for an SDK, but no luck so far in finding one.

Problem With Reading Data From Com Port(serial Port)
hi

I am developing a vb program to read data from MSR (Magnetic Stripe Reader). I have connected the MSR in com port. i want to get the data(member id) from the magnetic member card when the member swipes it on the MSR. I am using the follwoing cods to initialize and read the data

i'm initializing the device MSR in form load

Code:
form_load()

MSComm1.CommPort = 3
MSComm1.Settings = "19200,n,8,1"
MSComm1.RThreshold = 12
MSComm1.InputMode = comInputModeText
MSComm1.InputLen = 0
MSComm1.PortOpen = True

Private Sub MSComm1_OnComm()
Dim aaa As String
If MSComm1.CommEvent = comEvReceive Then
aaa = MSComm1.Input
Text1.Text = aaa

End If
End If
End Sub

My problem is, for some cards the above mentioned code is working fine. ie, i can get the data and i am checking the member id with teh table. fine. but sometimes i am not getting anything from MSR when the member swipes the card. I don;t know what is the problem in my code.

The length of the Member id will variy from member to member, for example

the format %99999-123? - length is 11 characters

%99999/01-1123? -length is 15 characters

%99997-1? - length is 9 characters

Pls suggest me what is the problem in my code. and y ii cannot get any data from some of the cards. that cards are working in another machines without any problem

Thanks in advance

Reading From A PCI Port.
greetings,
i'm a new VB user and i'm wondering how to read digital input from a port on an I/O card. The signal is received when an external switch is closed and i want to either continuosly monitor the input status of the port or preferably read its state when a change is detected. Is it easier to read individual lines within an 8 line port? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Saruman.

Reading A Com Port
I use MSCOMM control to read a com port
Now the device i use is a serial dongle.
I want to use a serial dongle instead of my usual parallel dongle i used in the past to protect my software.
When using the dongle on my laptop connected to a USB TO RS232 cable
This works great i constanly getting a signal the dongle is connected.
The MSComm1_OnComm event is constanly triggerd until i pull out the dongle
then this stops. This works correct for me. I try the same using the dongle directly connected on a Com port of a PC but the OnComm event is'nt triggered (only when i set the RTSEnable = True then OnCOmm is triggered when i plug the dongle in and allso when i remove it again, only i constantly want OnComm to be triggered until dongle is pulled out just like before).
Here the code, and i am new to working with a MSComm control
Maybe the code is incomplete or has an error.

Code:
private sub Command1_Click()
MSComm1.Commport= 1
MSComm1.Settings="9600,8,N,1"
MScomm1.InputLen = 0
MSComm1.DTREnable = True
MSComm1.PortOpen = True
end sub

Port Reading
ok if i have a port on my system (i know the number) how can i read the data being sent through it?

and can i trace where the port is connected to?

Reading Off The USB Port
I have a program whcih accesses a GPS unit. Typically these come with a serial cable that attaches to a standard serial port on the computer and the program works fine to locate the device on a COM port and communicate with it. The problem arrizes when a user does not have a standard serial cable, but uses a serial to usb adapter and plugs the device in. When the USB cable is pugged in, the device shows up as a Human Interface Device. Does anyone know if ther eis a n easy way to communicate with this or is it going to have to have a custome driver built? What I would like is for it to tsho up as a standard com port, but that may be asking too much.

Reading Port 162 UDP
I have winsock on my APP.
I need to read the port 162 and display the message on a text box.
I have this code

With wsock1
.protocol = sckUDPProtocol

.GetData d
End With

then i display the data on a textbox

What i am doing wrong?

Reading One Port / Sending To Another
Hi folks, I'm really very sorry if this is in the the wrong place but I have the following question:

I have a USB GPS reciever. (The mouse type)

I also have a symbian mobile with some Nav software on.

Problem is this, I can get my location with the gps into my lappy.
The phone needs a signal from a Bluetooth GPS reciever.

Is there a way to program or software to do it by way of reading the incoming data from one USB port and sending that same data back out through another to which the Bluetooth device is plugged into, and thus giving my phone the data it wants.

I know I could, and do, use autoroute, but I would prefer to have a smaller screen on the dash of my truck instead of having to glance down at the laptop all the time.

Many many thanks in anticipation, Jerry.

Reading From Comm Port
Hi,

I have connected an electonic weighing scale to
CommPort 2 on my pc. I want to continuously read the
contents of the weight into the textbox.
This is what I have done but I am not successful. It
displays some junk characters at times. Can someone
please help me.

On a form I have placed a TextBox, Timer and MSComm.

Private Sub Form_Load()
Timer1.Enabled = True
Timer1.Interval = 1
MSComm1.CommPort = 2
MSComm1.PortOpen = True
End Sub

Private Sub Timer1_Timer()
Text1.Text = MSComm1.Input
End Sub

RE-Reading From Comm Port
hi
Most weighing machines send out a trigger chr within the string
(STX, +/- or a CR)
if you set the comms port to read in 1 chr at a time until you fnd
the
trigger then change the read length to take in the required weigt
Chr's then display should solve your problem

Reading Signal From COM Port
Please feedback to me if you have ecperience in capturing voltage signal from the COM port using Visual Basic. Tq.

Reading Serial Port
First I have a question. Can the mscomm32.ocx still be used with Windows 2000
Server? I ask because I wrote an VB app awhile back to communicate with
a serial port on a NT Server box. Now that I put Windows 2000 Server on it
it won't communicate with the com port using the mscomm. Does anyone have any
sample code, using API calls, that can help me read and write to a com port. Or, if mscomm should work for Windows 2000 Server, can anyone help lead me to an
answer to what might have changed. I have both servers configured the same.

Thanks

Reading And Writing To/from Parallel Port
I use a .dll called Inpout32.dll which enables me to read and write from parallel port. I've managed to write
to my parallel port but I can't read from it.

This is what I want to do:

I want to read a bit pattern from the 8 data pins of parallel port. If a bit pattern read from the parallel
port pattern is equal to a predefined pattern (say 11000000), it will pop up mesage automatically
without any effort from user such as clicking or anything. From inpout32.dll, the code to read from
parallel port is

Byteread=inp(&h378)

where &h378 is the address for my parallel port.

so my questions now are:
1) How can I use this code to read from parallel port?
2) How can I check whether the detected bit pattern is 11000000?
3) How can I create a popup message automatically when the bit pattern checked is correct and equal to11000000?
4) Where should my code be written; whether in a caption, text, label or what?

Could I have a sample of the code to enable this assigment?

Get Reading From Serial COM1 Port
Hi, If anybody understands the MS Comm Control or anyother way of getting signals from serial ports, please help. I hope this doesn't get too long...

Ok, I have a pH meter connected to my COM1 Serial Port, and I would like to create a simple program that displays the pH value from the meter. In the manual for the Corning 315 pH meter, it says interfacing with computers, printers, and other RS232 compatible devices is possible. It says that the type of communications is:

uni directional, baud rate 1200, data format - 1 start bit : 8 data bits : 1 stop bit : no parity

The polarity of the output is the same as the polarity of the input signal.

I took a couple shots at creating a program using the MS Comm Control, but had no luck... but that's in part because I don't really understand the functions to the MS Comm Control.. I think this should be a very simple program to create, just a "start" button to start the program recieving the signal from the pH meter, and then a text box to display the pH value. Can anybody code this? Thanks for the help.

Just for the fun of it, I put the code to my last terrible attempt at MS Comm Control and trying to make a program for this. Don't laugh too hard..

*************

Private Sub Command1_Click()
If MSComm1.CommEvent = comEvReceive Then
Dim Buffer As Variant
Buffer = MSComm1.Input
End Sub

Private Sub Form_Load()

End Sub

Private Sub MSComm1_OnComm()

End If

End Sub

Private Sub Text1_Change()
Text1.Text = MSComm1.Input
End Sub

Thanx again

Reading Data From The Serial Port?
Ok now before the flames... I did a search. I didn't find any significant information... basically what I want to do is:

Read data from a MAXICODE scanner plugged in to COM1/2 and then use the data it returns for some data entry in to a txt file.

I used the TConnector thing from TEC-IT to read an 80-character string from the serial port... I want to know how to do it with MSComm or just pure VB... pretty simple in idea..

My question is... is there any examples available showing how to do this WITHOUT using an activeX control?

I don't want to pay for licensing... if anyone knows a good serial port guide then shoot my way... or a .bas file with commands... thanks!

VB05-Reading Serial Port
Im currently working on serial port RS232 communication, im able to set configurations thru serial port to my device, but having problems reading from the port. So im posting the same questions in a few VB forum, with the hope to obtain various valuable comments and suggestions..

I'm sending out command in ascii form, for example:

I want to set the "run" state of spectrum analyzer, its command is Q1 CR

therefore, inside a button event handler, i wrote:

Try

SerialPort1.Write(Chr(81) & Chr(49) & Chr(13))

Catch ex As Exception

MsgBox(ex.ToString)

End Try

As for reading from the serial port part, the problems come where, i put the below source codes, and the results is that the value is changing extremely fast like overflow that i cant really read the values measured. The values received from the spectrum analyzer are integer value. like, -70, etc...sometimes the value remain constant... how do i set the timer so that the port will poll for new incoming data at certain interval, say 1second,... and it discards the same incoming value as the present one, and only display an incoming data which is different from present.

But then, im confused because the fast changing figure are not really numbers we can read, instead i get something like, n ? E, etc.. What should i do with them so that i can read the actual value.

Besides, if i want to display the incoming data in an an real time graph, what should i use inside the toolbox?

'Read signals

Private Sub Button8_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button8.Click

SerialPort1.WriteLine(Chr(82) & Chr(51) & Chr(13) & vbCrLf)

End Sub

Private Sub DataReceived( _

ByVal sender As Object, _

ByVal e As System.IO.Ports.SerialDataReceivedEventArgs) _

Handles SerialPort1.DataReceived

TextBox3.Invoke(New _

myDelegate(AddressOf updateTextBox3), _

New Object() {})

End Sub

Public Delegate Sub myDelegate()

Public Sub updateTextBox3()

End Sub

Your help is very much appreciated!

Weird Problem Reading COM Port
Hi,
I got a really strange problem getting values from a COM port.
I have a VB program that reads COM port values sent by a scale.
It works just fine in a Laptop (P II 200 Mhz) , but the same program, same COM port configuration in a Desktop P IV 1.8 GHz wont work that well. I got some good readings, but others come with noise (strange characters). For example : 1st time it reads "16.05.2003 14:55" and 2nd time it reads "?L?? ??:55".
What can it be ? In the laptop I don't get a single error. Does it have to be with computer motherboard and possible diferent communication speeds ?
I've tried anything and I got to no solution. Even tried to configure the COM port directly in Control Panel->Hardware ....

Thanks in advance,
Vitor Silva

Reading Com Port For Device Output
I have no clue how to solve this the best way?

Problem is I have a program wich collects information from a device unit.
This information has to be send to a database.
Device is connected to the PC thru COM port and the output from the device is like follow :

RPOST.NL 7HKL root hub, class 1/2, rev 5.42/2.44, addr 6
USB attached: USB-Hub.
RPOST.NL. product 0x0203, class 5/1, rev 1.10/3.00, addr 2
USB attached: USB-Bridge.0000
DEVICE OK
Model: SLS_NUMBER
LBA : NUMBERS

DEVICE2 OK

R_NUMBERS

N_NUMBERS

+------------------------------+
BOOT VERSION : <INFO>
HARDWARE VERSION : <INFO>
SOFTWARE VERSION : <INFO>
+------------------------------+
LSOMETHING
QSOMETHING

Procedure is that a person has the program running, the program constant checks for COM input.
When received above information, insert immediately into the database.

My thoughts where to do it with a timer, but how can I see the start and end of the information (or when there is no information) from the string?
So that I can insert it into the database

Reading Data From Serial Port
Hi everyone, i am doing a project on
tongue cybernetics and we have
linked five of the sensors to a serial cable
thru an aquisition card.

Currently we are using National Instrument's
Labview to view the signals in real time
but we would like to know if it is possible
to use visual basic to communicate
directly with the serial port and output
the data onto a graph in vb.

I have searched the MSDN collection and
various other sites but didn't find any
thing regarding this so i was hoping you
guys could help me out with this.

Thx in advance!

Reading In Bytes From Parlel Port
I need some help

INP (&H379)
to read in data from the hex addresses of the inputs. I was wondering if their is anyway of doing this in VB.

Reading Data From The COMM Port In VB.NET
Hi people…

How can I read data from the comm Port?

I found two examples on Microsoft, one of them use rs232 class and another *.dll…
Well my knowledge of VB.net in not enough to understand the code in the rs232 class and its commands (+ that example designed for modem but not for port communication) and another example doesn’t have documentation for library (on example script in C# and library itself)

So since I’m absolutely new in VB.net could somebody explain/show how to read data from the comm. Port?

Thanks!

Reading Data From Comm Port
Hi All,

I am a novice in VB development. I want to capture data from one of the Chemical analyzer machines which has it's printer within itself, but it does has a comm port. Now I want to capture data sent by it's comm port on my PC. I have the requisit cable but am not able to receive any data. Therefor I tried writing this script and sent some data using print command from dos prompt on com port. But to my dismay I am not getting connected. If I send data first and then try to connect it says port is open and doesn't let me go ahead. and if I send data and then without using PortOpen try to access the port it says the port is not open.

And if I open port before sending the data then it doesn't let me send the data on the port only. Can somebody help me how to resole this issue. The code is as follows:

MSComm.Settings = "9600, n, 8 , 1"
MSComm.CommPort = 1
PortStatus = MSComm.PortOpen
If Not PortStatus = True Then
MSComm.PortOpen = True
End If
Text1 = MSComm.PortOpen
MSComm.PortOpen = False

Thanks in Advance, Hoping to receive some answer. You can even send me reply directly on my mail ID sidadirat@hotmail.com

Reading Data Bit On Parallel Port
What is the syntax if I want to read the Data Bit of the paralle port? I am working with my project wherein I am using the parallel port as an input. Please Help, I am a newbie in VB

Reading Com Port At 4800 Baud??
I am using VB6 and MSCOMM to read my com port but I need to read from a device that is sending at 4800,9,N,1.  Niether the baud rate nor the number of data bits is supported by MSCOMM and yet the com port reads the data just fine so it must be capable of acheiving those parameters.

How, using VB6, am I able to capture this data? Is there a way?

Thanks for any help on this.

Apologies if this has been addressed earlier. I have a serial dot matrix printer that also function as an MICR reader. The manufacturer has supplied a windows driver for the printer function - to allow us to print complex scripts (arabic) however it looks like the driver locks out the serial port as it does not allow access to the serial port through VB's MSCOMM control even with HyperTerminal. Is there a work around to this ?

Thanks for your help.
