Side-Scrolling Game


I'm going to be making a side-scrolling platform game with a couple friends (tile based levels). I want to have smooth scrolling of the background and i dont know how to do this! Can anyone help me out?

Help Making Collision Detection In A Sonic The Hedgehog Side Scrolling Game
I am very new to DirectX and I am working on a Sonic fan game type thing. I haven't actually started on it yet but I need help programming the game engine for the levels, collision detection, AI, etc.

My main question at the moment: how do I implement collision detection between the sonic sprite and the level tiles. (Keep in mind that their not all square, some are slops and curves).

My second question: how would I create an engine which could show all the level pieces for a given position in the level (if you know what I mean). For example: if I were to set the sprite in a certain position in the middle of the level, how would the engine know where to blit the appropriate tiles?

And my third question: I do know how to load a bitmap from a file and show it on the screen, but does anyone know how to cut tiles out of a bitmap? Thatís all I can think of for now, but any help would be appreciated.

Side Scrolling Help Plz.
Im sorda new to Visual Basic(I receantly got Vb .net), Ive made a few games so far(none really complete). Anyway my new game ia a 2D shooter, the player can stand at 8 different angles, move fwd & Bck, and shoot at the 8 angles. The problem Ive ran into is i dont know how to make a backround scroll around where the player walks.I want the player to see about one square foot in the middle of the screen the rest of the map would be covered.I dont know much so if any one can help me learn how to side scroll i would appericate it.

I also need to know how to make one object set properties(like a wall that a player cant go through) and then just make as many as i want and put them where ever i want.

Side Scrolling Examples
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any good examples of side 2D side scrollers I could look at, in particular ones that dont use tiles (ie, polygons). I just want to see how others have done thiers.
I've seen the mario one using VGL, but I'd prefer not to use an engine. Any help would be appreciated.

I in the procese of making a side scrolling driving game and needed a little help.
I am trying to move my car using the keydown event.
The problem comes when pressing two keys at the same time.
I'm trying to move it diagonaly, press up and right. How do I do that?

Side Scrolling With Out Tiles
is it posable to do side scrolling games like mario with out useing a tileing engian? if so can you point me in the right direction for info on that. all the side scrolling has to do is go left and right and i alread have jumping, and a few other things that ill put into the game that i would need to put into the game

Continual, Automatic Side Scrolling
Hello all..

I'm making a game, and I want it to be sort of like (it's not a shooter) Metal Slug, where the screen continues to scroll right for a long time until you get up to the end of the level.

I want to do this so that I don't have to create multiple forms etc etc... How would I do this, and have it automatically scrolling?

Side Scroler Game
some friends and I have started a little project... we are going to make a litle game, nothing big something like mario or sonic (a side scroler) i was wondering if some of you game programmers out there had any tips as to how to start this project.. Anything is appreciated it doesn't have to be in code in fact it would be better if it wasn'nt code because we haven't decided on the language that we are gonna use.. so any tips, pointers, past experiences on side scrollers would be appreciated

Getting Around Obstacles (Side-view Game)
Hello all, I have a game engine I've been working on for a while, and I need to know how (if it's possible) to make the character get around obstacles.

Each room has four rectangles that the hero can walk in. The rectangles can be sized and positioned to match the room's terrain. The "obstacles" I'm referring to are the spaces in which there is no rectangle. I need the user to be able to tell the hero to move to a spot on the other side of such a space, and be able to move along the divide until he finds a rectangle that "bridges the gap." I have attached a screenshot to illustrate(the rectangles and stuff was drawn in by me later).

Tile Game + Side Scroller
Hey,

Ok, I want to make a game resembling Zelda. I created an array of 100 picture boxes for tiles and wrote a map editor so that I can create maps for it. It all works beautifully and it is so easy to do. I have 2 things that I don't know how to go about implementing. I want my character to look like it is walking. I will have 3 frames for each direction (standing, left-leg forward, right-leg forward). The thing is, I don't want the character to move a whole tile when he walks. It should take all three frames to cross a tile. If I can figure that part out, then it would help me later with the collision detection so that you can start to walk onto a tile but can't go all the way (like a tree in the middle of the tile, you wouldn't want to have to stop on the square edge of the tile not even close to the tree). So does anybody know how I would go about breaking the walking animation into steps across a tile? If possible, without a timer. The second question is about moving to the next screen. I don't want to walk to the edge of the screen and then it jumps to a new screen. I want it to scroll in the direction I am moving, drawing only the tiles that need to be visible at a time. So like a side-scroller but It should scroll up, down, left, and right. I guess you would need to know a little about how my map editor works. Each tile (tree,rock,ect) has a number. The map editor is visual but when I click "Create Map" it figures out which tile is where and saves all the numbers to a file. Then my program retranslates it to the tiles again. There is a 100 numbers in one of my map files (*.txt). Do you think there is a better way to implement the map process so it will work better for the multi-directional scrolling. Oh yeah, this game is 2D looking from an over head view. Ok, I have asked to many questions. Thanks for reading this.

Help With Scrolling Game
I recently started converting my RPG game over to the scroll system, instead of my current point and click system. The only problem I have now is drawing the tile under the character's tile aswell (no black space). This method is relatively new to me, and I don't know how to work any of the functions. Can somebody just tell me what peice of code I would have to add to make it draw the tile under the chracter's tile.

Note: Would probably take 2 seconds for any non-newbie to see what code to add.

Scrolling Screen For Game
Hi everyone,

I've been working on a game lately, and was wondering if anyone could give me a little bit of help with it. What I need is a scrolling screen that will scroll up, down, left, right, diagonally, etc. Basically, when the character walks I want the screen to move with him. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas to help me out with this. I'm fairly new to visual basic, so the simplest way will probably suffice.

2D Scrolling Game Using DirectDraw?

Pritty much a copy + paste from the Game Programming forum, but...

I am wondering how/where I can find a clean and easy example of a map (tiled map if you wish) but smoothly scrolls (Not block movement, yuck!). Also, where you can move around the screen with a racecar

I am very good with winsock and am wanting to make a racing game in VB, it would be a real challange for me.

The problems I also see is setting X and Y co-ords...

If I have a tile-based map (So textures are all at a set size) then I cant have a smooth scroll, can I?

Can someone help me out please, ive checked planetsourcecode.com but nothing to really help me out, oh and I would PREFER this to be a windowed app (Drawn in a control like a picturebox or something)...

BitBlt Scrolling Space Game
Hi, I am trying to make a BitBlt scrolling spaceship game, but I cant seem to get the bullets working properly. When I press space it shoots a bullet but if I press it again, instaed of shooting another bullet it just resets the X and Y positions of the current one. Can anyone help me please. Thanks!

Any Ideas On How To Save 'Level' Data For A 2D Scrolling Game?
OK, I have a great idea for a game, but am stuck on one thing, How to store data for each level?

Any one rember Metroid on NES, or MegaMan?
well that's how I'm planning on my games levels to be like.
for those of you who don't know of Metroid it's just basically like Mario Bros, execpt insted of just moving forward, you can move forward, backward, up, and down

I haven't even started writing any code yet, I wanted to start out with the level editor.
whithin the level file I want to store the following:
-where to place each tile within the level (the viewable screen will be 20 by 15 tiles @ 32X32 pixles) (I just can't figure this out?)
-Misaleanous data about each tile like: background or foreground, Destroyable or not?, interactable?, etc...

if the following is possable I would like to do it
-storing the actual images within the file so no one can acess the pictures and change them (I was thinking like saving the position and rgb values of each pixel, but that would probally be slow loading)

if anyone has any ideas how to do this please post your ideas, (I only want ideas, I'm not looking for any code (unless you already made a level editor for levels like these))

How To Get The Data Generated By Response.WriteFile() Method On Server Side In Client Side

I am hosting a webbrowser control in my application(VB.NET) and want
to implement downloading files from web automatically without user operation.
That is my application click the downloading links pragramatically and
download the files.

The problem is how could I directly get the data which generated by
Response.WriteFile() method on server side in client side and
save the file to disk programatically, instead of popup a download
file dialog then a save as dialog and interact with them to save the file.

How Do You Check If The File Path Is Existing Or Not Using ASP And In Client Side Not Server Side?
I'd like to know if a user entered a Path for a File the Path is existing or not and I'm using ASP not VB. In VB it is possible but in ASP it does not work. This is the code I used:

Call Server Side Dll From Client Side ActiveX Control

I am Shan, computer science undergraduate from Malaysia. Recently I encountered a problem in developing an ActiveX control using Visual Basic. In the Visual Basic program, I make calls to a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) provided by an ADC (Analogue-Digital Converter) manufacturer. The code as shown below illustrates more on the call to the DLL.

The Visual Basic program works fine when I run the program from Visual Basic. The following step was creating an OCX file. After the OCX file was created, I use the Ms Frontpage to create a web page with the ActiveX control. At this stage, I found that the web page is not standalone. It requires the DLL file in the same folder as the web page in order to work properly. I hope that by now you know what am I trying to solve.

But actually it is not that simple. I have to upload the web page into the Personal Web Server (PWS) so that others could access it through an URL (http://shaan/pico). When I upload the web page into the PWS (ADC1132.dll is copied into the virtual directory as well) I could access the page properly with a web browser within the machine that hosts the web page. The ActiveX control does not work properly in another machine when it is called through URL. This is because the ActiveX control in the machine doesn't reaches the DLL file in the server (It will try to find the DLL file in that machine itself and prompt an error stating that the DLL file is not found in the associated folder).

Q: How to make the ActiveX control in the web page to reach the DLL file in the server (Downloading the DLL file into a client machine is not a solution because it interfaces with the ADC)?

I would like to know whether any of you have had experience debugging
side-by-side applications that are written in VB6?

In other words, let's say that different versions of the same product are
installed on one PC side-by-side. Both versions of the product use their own
COM types and now you would like to debug one version. Since the activation
information now lies in the manifest files for each version (instead of the
Windows registry), what is the best scenario to open the desired version in
VB6 and start debugging?

I see two scenarios of debugging here:

1. Register the COM types in the Windows registry for the application that
you want to debug and then open the application's project in VB6.

2. Add additional code to the application project to use the Activation
Context API and load the manifests for the COM types that the application
depends on.

I see scenario #2 as being more elegant but harder to implement in code.
This will keep the Windows registry clean (without COM activation entries)
allowing you to easily develop and test on the same PC.

On the other hand, Scenario 1 is the easiest way out since it uses the
traditional built-in implementation of VB6 to search the Windows registry for
the COM activation information. However, you have to remember to register the
collection of COM types that the application uses before loading the
application's project in VB6. This also pollutes the PC with COM entries in
the Windows registry, forcing you to either clean up before doing run-time
testing or test on another 'clean' PC altogether to ensure that side-by-side
is maintained.

I really would like the community's input on this and share your experiences.

Vbscript - Can I Call A Server-side Sub From Client-side?
Hi There,

I have an onSelectedItemChanged event (call this the ServerEvent) that I have already writtern in in VB.NET (server-side). When the user selects a new item from a drop down, this method is called. If they select a particular item within the page, programatically (from the server-side) i change the selectedindex of the drop down to something else. Then; however, the onSelectedItemChanged event does not fire.

I have been given some advice that I might need to ALSO have an onSelectedItemChanged event on the server-side (call this the ClientEvent), to catch the fact that i have programatically changed the selected index.

What I want to know is, is there a way to call my ServerEvent from my ClientEvent, so that all my code is still being done from the server-side?

If so, how do I do this, and if not, how can I get around this??

Notice in visual basic's 6 editor at the top below the richtextbox theres 2 combo box's and when you resize the form they both go with its size..

IE Style Menu && Toolbar Side By Side In Vb?
I'd prefer to put my toolbar buttons beside my menu, rather than underneath it. I don't like wasting all of that space. I noticed that Explorer's can have toolbar buttons beside it's menu. I'd like that if possible. Anyone know anything about this?

Both of them do get printed side-by-side, but the gap is very wide. What could be the problem ?

Client Side Or Server Side Cursors
I have developed an application that uses an Access database. The
application will be used in a small business with approximatley 6 users. In
the application I am using the Data Environment to connect and issue
commands.

Question is would it be better to use Server side cursors so that everyone
can see changes or would should I stick with Client cursors. If the
recommendation is for client side cursors how should I architect the
application so that users can see changes to the database while they have a
recordset open.

Side By Side Images In Picture Box.....
I am kind of new to Visual Basic, and I am wondering if it is possible to place two images side by side in a picture box??? I have been trying to solve this for a couple days and have gotten no closer please help me.

im trying to slide the camera from left to right, right now im just having it increase decrease the X value of the View, then everything gets slanted, like its moving around, do i have to change the project to? how would i do this?

can any one give me the link or any hints how can i develop an application where every user acess the database at a time im a new comer into vb field thats why plz help me

scenario is i have developed an applicaion in vb backend sql server ..
in win 2k we can work with out any error but when i install and in an win 98 system it says u can not acess db at time for that u need to get full version of software like that ... i dont know whats that err..

Running 2 Setup's Side By Side In VB.

I do have requirement like this :
i have to install my product in my client place.
for this product we use msde as the back end.
i have 2 setup files, to install my product in the client systems.
one setup for the project and another for the installation of the msde .
i do need to do the whole installation at one shot.
so first i shall run the first setup and in that i shall enable the msde setup.
but while doing this i do get errors, and system is not allowing to run 2 setup's side by side.
so can i get help reg how to go about ?asap.
or can any one suggest a better method to install the code and msde in a single shot.

Two Forms Side To Side Vertical

I have 1 big form , that fill the all screen, but when the user load other form, He want that the two forms will be side to side in the vertical.
I do not do this
Somebody know to do this ?

Displaying Two Toolbars Side By Side At The Top
Yo Ho yall! Can anyone suggest a way (or even say 'it can't be done') to display two toolbars at the top of an MDI form side by side. Both toolbars are less than half width.
I have a total of 4 toolbars which I switch between, but wish two to remain visible at all times.
I have tried various options, but just get laughed at.

SERVER SIDE VS. CLIENT SIDE?
I have stepped into the code of a VB 6 program using ADO to query against SQL 7 and it is really slow.  I am sure the connection is using client side because the memory jumps on the client computer when executing.  The problem is it varies in slowness by the cpu and memory of the client.  Is it better to store the cursor server side?  How do I do this?  This is the code that takes the most time:

Side By Side Deployment Of COM Components In XP
I'm trying to deploy a COM app (written in VB6)on Windows XP to allow side by side versioning.
My test app consists of an EXE,dll & an ocx.
I've created manifests for each component. The dll works fine both early & late bound using createobject().
The ActiveX control is a different story. If it is drawn on the EXE screen (& a dependency placed in the exe.manifest file) it loads & shows OK (suggesting the the manifest for the ocx is ok).
However, dynamically loading the control using Controls.Add("ActiveXControl.TestControl", "MyControl) gives a runtime error of 336 - Component not correctly registered.
Can anyone help with this ?
(Is there something missing from the ocx manifest to do with the comClass data ?)

Side-By-Side Deployment Of COM Components
I'm trying to deploy a COM application written in VB6 on XP machines in
a side by side mode. The application consists of EXEs, DLLs and OCXs.

The DLLs work fine however, the OCXs give a problem. If the OCX is
drawn on the EXE screen it loads & shows OK (suggesting the the
manifest for the OCX is ok). However, dynamically loading the control
using Controls.Add gives a runtime error of 336 - Component not
correctly registered. This happens only for Public controls and not
the private ones.

Does anyone know why and is there a workaround? I can't make the
controls, that give an error, Private since these are being accessed
from several other external components.

Can some tell me what exactly is side by side execution in ASP.NET. It is said that same component with different version can run side by side. HOw can we create same component with diff. version in .net? can some one expalin it with example?

Try To Bring My Game From Window Game To Internet Game
I am an VB newbie, picked up VB.net and redone an old fashion game with it, it works pretty well on my PC now. After done with Window forms and Web forms, I found myself lost in this new world of web jargons, such as ASP.NET, XML, SOAP or cookies. I wish to move my game from window level to web level, and could not figure out what's the right tool to use.

My game needs web server to provide "some" information, keep track scores, and being in the "background". The game itself mainly runs on client local PC, only needs to communicate with a server for help, record keeping and limited event handling, and I don't need to bring up a web page by IE.

This game is an old favorite of mine, it can be played just like any other online games. After reading three books (honestly not all 800 pages), I don't have a single clue where to go from here. Can anyone help to educate me what's the tool or which book should I study from here?

Would It Be Easy To Convert A Completely Top View 2d Game To An Isometric Style Game?
im making a top view 2D game but later on after completing it i want to convert it to isometic view, thirdperson

i couldnt be bothered learning how to right now, so i just want to create the game in 2d first

so would it be easy to convert from 2d to isometric?

also if someone could explain or post a link to a tutorial on how to do isometric games .......

Speed-limit A Game, Game Running To Fast On P4 2.0
Iīm making a SuperMario-like game,
I develop it on my 1,1ghz, Geforce 256 32mb, 512mb ram, computer, it runs at a perfect speed.

When I tried it on my brothers 2.0ghz P4, Geforce4 Ti4600 128mb, 512mb ram, it ran so fast it was impossible to play it..

The thing I want to do is:
*Get as high FPS as possible (thoose drawing rutines should run as fast as possible)
*Get the GetInputs, MoveCharacter and CalculateEnemyAI functions to run each X ms (millisecond)

I tried to use a timer at 1ms but the game becomes very slow, I guess it cannot run as fast as 1000 times a second,

Any suggestions, ideas to fix this problems?
