SourceSafe Uses 8.3 Naming?
Here is my issue, I am trying to setup a SourceSafe server on a machine with a computer name of "MyServer12345" now source safe does not like this for a DB location.. it keeps giving me error messages about not being able to find the path, or that the DB is an incorrect DOS name. (It is using unc like this: \MyServer12345VSS) Now if i do an identical setup on server "MyServer" I have no issues.
Does sourcesafe require database paths to conform to DOS 8.3 naming? And why is it using UNC for the path on mapped drives??

The six million dollar question that's been keeping me awake at nights
My company wants a program to be developed
that can interact with sourcesafe, i.e. build reports
based on check in's/check out's, code changes, etc.
Anybody know of any good sites about accessing SourceSafe
database, etc. through VB?
Y This Happens In Sourcesafe
It has happened many times. While working on sourcesafe, a time is reached when you check in even then it does not saves the changes. Only option left is to make the changes again after loading the project again.
Does anybody of you have also faced this and any idea abt the same?
There have been several times when I made updates to my code and checked it in using Visual SourceSafe. When I do a "Get Latest Version", my updates are not there. Like an idiot, I trusted that SourceSafe actually saved everything, so I didn't back up my working folder before getting the latest version, and it toasted all of my updates. I tried running the analyze utility and it didn't find any corruption. Am I doing something wrong or is Visual SourceSafe just not all that safe?
Sourcesafe And VB
I've installed sourcesafe but it doesn't show up in the add-ins in vb. Can anyone please tell me how to get it there?
What is sourcesafe and how do i use it
I get a message to put in my password but I don't have one and I really don't know what it is.
The IT department I work in has about 350 people in it and we are trying to determine the best way to set up our SourceSafe environment to manage our source code. We are thinking it would be best to have a separate server where all the code resides, and establish some standard procedures for checking in code, making builds, and moving it into production. Can anyone give me some suggestions or point me to a good resource for this?
I want to remove a project from SourceSafe. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this accomplished?
Has anyone tried it before?
I have not found any information on getting a project out.
I have a double barrelled question.
Firstly does anyone know where to find details on the MS website regarding sourcesafe 2005 (can find information on sites trying to sell it, but none on the MS site).
Also can you use SS2005 with VB6 - or do i have to buy SS6?
There are 2 types of computer, the prototype and the obsolete!!
What is source safe for and how do you use it?
I'm trying to develop an ASP site with a link to a SourceSafe database, but it doesn't work.
I've registered the ssapi.dll and I tried to use The ProgID, but I keep on getting an error that the ProgID for the VSSDatabaseObject is invalid.
Can anyone help me out.
Is anybody can help me out to figure out how i can to do copy latest version files from SourceSafe via vbcode?
We have at work the following versions of VB 4.0 Enterprise, 5.0 Professional, 6.0 Professional, and .NET.
I want to use more of Visual Sourcesafe but it only comes with our 4.0 Enterprise edition. I cannot find a book that will help us learn the ins and outs of VSS. Does anyone know of one or of a resource on the internet on how we can use VSS?
Visual SourceSafe API
Does anyone know how to determine if a file is "keep latest version" using the SourceSafe API?
I've just started using Visual Sourcesafe with my VB projects. I have a question. When I check out a file for editing, a little red tick appears in the Project Explorer window next to the filename. When I want to check a file into SourceSafe I get a little lock appearing next to the filename after its been sucessfully checked in. I then can't edit the file etc. Why is this?
I am a beginner to programming and preparing for Microsoft's exam 70-176. I have VS Professional edition installed in my PC. Now I need Visual SourceSafe. How to get it? Can anybody give me a clue???
Any advices to prepare for exam 70-176 also welcome.
I've suddenly lost all the SourceSafe menus in VB. This happened a while ago and I fixed it by editing a file somewhere and inserting a line that had somehow been deleted. Now I can't remember what or where or how - anyone know?
Sourcesafe And UserControls
I dont know if anyone has come accross this before but I have a project in sourcesafe. It has 2 usercontrols nested ie one inside the othere - it works fine.
I wanted to create another project very similar so I Saved the project As.. ne name, but when i open the project I have errors loading the usercontrol saying "Line 15: The property name _ExtentX in ctlname is invalid." Er anyideas because the control does not have a _ExtentX property.
I have no idea where to look as the error message is cryptic. Ive also tried 'share' in sourcesafe - same problem.
Im stumped, i cant seem to be able to use the same usercontrol in 2 projects.
Thanks in advance
I’m trying to work out a few things about Visual SourceSafe and one of them is this. If I want to send a shell application, after bringing it to a stable state (after having developed the shell app.), to a team at another location for final development do I create a separate Visual SourceSafe database and then ship the database file to the other location? Or, do I use the Pack. & Deployment Wizard from within SourceSafe to create a master copy, when I’m done, and ship that to the other location?
Can you help?
We're building tools on top of SourceSafe to help manage our projects. We have recently branched in order to support parallel development.
I need to access the branching history of a file (i.e. what you seen when you choose Properties... Paths... or run SS PATHS).
I see that I can access VSSItem.Links through COM - this gives me the share history - but I'd expect there to be a similar function named e.g. VSSItem.Paths.
Does anyone know of a function to access the branching history? Is it something convoluted like pinning in COM? Or am I left to parse the output of SS PATHS?
Any help gratefully received - even if the answer is "no, you can't get at it".

someone has manuals of visual sourcesafe 6.0 or knows where I can find. There is some type of care to have in the installation or configuration of the visual sourcesafe
I was writing my projects without SourceSafe but I decided to try it i added files on SourceSafe account but now i cant get them back. Files are there but i cant write on them what can i do?
My sourcesafe is
Visual SourceSafe Version 6.0a (Build 8835)
I know 6c (SP6) is the latest but how do I tell what service packs are available, what service pack is installed, and what the service packs I'm missing will do for me.
The summary of fixes for SP6 has just four items. Were the SP's before SP6? What did they contain?
My boss won't install a service pack "just because". I need a reason to do this.
I added my project to SourceSafe by mistake and now everything is ReadOnly. I cant edit my project files at all. Is there any way to take my project out of SourceSafe and get rid of SourceSafe altogether?
Errors In SourceSafe
Everytime I check-out the project so I could add a form some forms disappears in the project and the screenshot of the error is what I am encountering when I try to add those forms that disappeared... And also, when I try to add a new form it is not automatically being added to the sourcesafe and I cannot even add it to the sourcesafe manually after adding it, I have to close then re-open the project again to be able to add in the sourcesafe those forms I added...
Could somebody give me a clue on what's happening? It seems my sourcesafe is not functioning correctly...
I have written some VB code to reference files in a given SourceSafe Project. I need to obtain the date which is next to the SourceSafe file in the main view of the application. This is the date of the last Checkin or Creation.
I am looking at the Item Properties but I cannot see a date property. I can see when it was last Checked out but not Checked in or Created.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Labelling In Sourcesafe
1) Does anyone know the affect of labelling a shared file in sourcesafe?
2) Does it label the file local to the project or is it labelled in all the projects the file is shared in?
3) How affective is labelling? Do any of you use it and are there any pitfalls I should look out for?
I want to do a format & re-install on one of my servers, the only problem is, this server has the main Visual SourceSafe database on which I connect to & upload all my files into.
Myquestion is, what's the extension, file or folder which all of these uploaded files are kept in? Is this an easy job - has anyone done this before without a problem?
When I log in as one user in Windows 2000 and then starts a VB-project it goes al right, when I do the same but with another user in 2000 (And the same in Visual Sourcesafe (but not on the same time)) I can't make an exe in the File-menu (It's greyed out). I think it has with Visual SourceSafe to do, but I'm not sure. Do anyone know what this problem depends on and how to overcome it and be able to make exe:s with both users.
How can I make VB quit asking if I want to add my project to SourceSafe when it is being loaded?
Using Visual Sourcesafe
We are using starting out with our schoolproject. We work both at the same time so we want to use VSS. I installed VSS and created 2 users. When I create a new project it ask me if I want to add it to VSS. I select yes and then I cannot change the project anymore. What am I doing wrong? I created a user Patrick and a user Raymond.
How To Disable SourceSafe In VB6?
How can I disable the SourceSafe option in VB6 ?
It will pop-up a message asking whether I want to add the project to SourceSafe when I open an existing project in VB ?
Thanks in advance !
I am working on a VB program previously built by someone else. I need to edit one of their user controls/ActiveX object. The object that they made was a part of SourceSafe and I don't know user names or passwords to SourceSafe. I need to edit the project but it is read only mode. If I create a new project and copy and paste the code into the new project, then when I distribute the new ActiveX control, it will be a new key in the registry. Is there a way around this?
when i open a file, a message box appears, "would you like to add this to visual sourcesafe?" but i clicked no. what is visual source safe? do we really need to put it in visual sourcesafe?
Visual SourceSafe API
I want to develop my own application which can analyze a Visual SourceSafe repository and calculate metrics particularly LOC (lines of code). I am not interested in purchasing a 3rd party product as I want to do this myself. I've found some documents on SourceSafe Automation but this has no info how I can cacluate LOC. Does anyone have any good suggestions on how to do this?
Is anyone aware of any problems with using Visual SourceSafe or any
reason why not to use it? I currently use it with my VB code but have
a person saying that Microsoft is not using it themselves because of
Yes, I just decided to use this to store by growing projects but I have a problem when I try to login it says my database is corrupt. Is there anyway I can create a new one? thanks for your help
