VB Communication With A Com Port
Hi guys I have a device connected to my Com Port and want to download the data on the device into my VB app.

I have the file layout (included header records) and the info I need to pass to the device to initiate the download.

Where I need some guidance is how to I open a Comm Port and once the download starts how can I capture the data in a record source to later store into a table. Since there is a header row, I am unsure how to parse the data coming back.

VB Serial Port Communication
Hi,
I need help in VB Com Controls. I need to read a character buffer which is written onto the port by the ST Decoder. The buffer contains the response packet for the command which I have sent. Can anyone please help me read the buffer using the MSComm Control and its events?

It is very important and urgent requirement for my project.

Serial Port Communication
I do have the VB 6.0 source code for a program to communicate with relais cards connected to the serial port of my PC. This code however is for interactive use, which means it needs mouseclicks to activate or deactivate the relais on the cards. What I need is an activation of the relais depending on the contents of an ascii file that shows the number of the relais to be switched. If I hand over the code, is someone able to show me how to turn this code into batch???
I am a very beginner in VB and my skills are more in IBM midrange systems (RPGIV, Cobol, CLP etc.). If someone has questions in this area do not hesitate to send me an email.

Thanx In Advance

Serial Port Communication
Hi, hope you can help.

My job requires that i upgrade the

To perform an upgrade on a device, it is necessary for me to connect using the serial port, establish a link using mode com1:19,n,8,1. Then sending a file using copy /b {filename} com1.

First of all, is it possible for me to send this file using the mscomm component, if so could anybody suggest a method of doing so. This would allow me to quickly select from a list of upgrades rather than doing so through dos prompt.

Also, I have a computer that does not have a serial port. I have a ps2 mouse port to serial port adapter. Is it possible to send the file using a diffierent port in this way if so, again, could somebody suggest a method.

Any help will be greatfully received.

Parallel Port Communication Via USB?
I have been doing some simple device communication using the parallel port (5 inputs and 7 outputs). The input and output signals are binary. The inputs are from sensors and the outputs turn on lights and a solenoid. Many laptops these days, however, do not come with a parallel port, so what can I do instead to still control these devices on these machines? It needs to be an inexpensive solution if it requires hardware.

I tried the mini port replicator from Keyspan (http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/mpr/) but the parallel port is not setup as an LPT port as I expected. Instead it shows up on the list of USB Controllers as "USB Printing Support". Is there a way to read and write to this like I can do with the parallel port?

I am using VB6.

Thanks in advance.

Serial Port Communication
I've seen where many people ask how to read or write to the serail ports, like for a serial printer. BUT, is there a way you can monitor what data is being sent to the port from the PC?

Example:
An application is sending data to the serial port, we'll just say a printer test page. I want to inercept that data, and print it to the screen, or some other destination. Is this possible?

Thanks

Communication Through COM Port *question*
I need to communicate with a device through a parallel port.
My project involves a stepper motor, an optical gate, and an ADC with an I^2C serial interface.

I want to hook this up to my laptop through the COM port, and I have all the necessary hardware, all I'm lacking is the software. I tried writing some code in VB a while back, in the very beginning of the project, but I ran into some stuff I couldnt understand at all, and abandoned all hope.

Can anyone point me in the direction where I can start looking for information? VB is most favorable to me, Im more familiar with it that any other language.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Winsock And Serial Port Communication
Hi,

I would like to make a VB software programme that's capable of communicating between a winsock and on the other site a TCP/IP modem that's connected on the internet. The TCP/IP modem is connected directly to the internet and has a RS-232 port.

With this method I'm able to communicate via the internet to the RS-232 modemport. Everything works fine for now!

Now I would like to place this configuration to use it with a protocol over the RS-232 line which has a parity change (None, Mark, Space). Does anybody now how I can change to parity change in a winsock ?

Greetings,
Jim

Serial Port Communication. At Bit Level ..!
hello masters,

i am a software programmer in visual basic. I have not touched the hard ware programming part yet. I have devoloped an electronic circuit and trying to interface it with my software. All i need is just detect a 5volt (high signal or binary '1') on a communication port pin which would be 0 volt (low signal or binary '0') most of the time through the coding. I only know which pins is ment for which task and nothing else. Can anybody suggest me which pin to be used for the purpose and how to program ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Serial Port Communication With MSComm...
Hey all, just a quick (hopefully easily resolved) question. I'm trying to write a program to send a file across a serial port, and I'm kind of stuck. I've managed to get text to go from my application to hyperterminal, but I'm not quite sure how to recieve text in my application, or more importantly, how to send and recieve files. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. I've pasted the beginnings of the program code below.
---------------------------------------------

Private Sub Form_Load()
cmbCommPort.AddItem (1)
cmbCommPort.AddItem (2)

cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (2400)
cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (4800)
cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (9600)
cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (19200)
cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (38400)
cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (57600)
cmbPortSpeed.AddItem (115200)

End Sub

Private Sub cmdExecute_Click()

Dim fileName As String
Dim commPort As Integer
Dim portSpeed As String
Dim inputBuff As String

fileName = txtFilename.Text
commPort = Val(cmbCommPort.Text)
portSpeed = cmbPortSpeed.Text

MSComm1.commPort = commPort
MSComm1.Settings = portSpeed + ",n,8,1"

'Enable Port
MSComm1.PortOpen = True

'Configure Port as InPut or Output
If optSend.Value = True Then
MSComm1.Output = "CPA00000000" + Chr(13)
MSComm1.Output = txtFilename.Text + Chr(13)
End If

' How exactly is the input portion to be used? Can you send items from
' hyperterminal and capture them to a text box? And how would you go
' about sending/receiving a file?

If optRecieve.Value = True Then
inputBuff = MSComm1.Input
txtFilename.Text = inputBuff
End If

MSComm1.PortOpen = False

End Sub

Private Sub cmdExit_Click()
End
End Sub

Communication Serial Port Com1
I have managed to get the communication running with the com1

where i do send some hexadecimal numbers.

However, i need to change the BAUD RATE according to the command
sent.

viz.

OPEN PORT
BAUD RATE : 9600,8,N,1
SEND THE STRING
CLOSE PORT.
Open "com1:" For Output As #ff ( OPENED PORT HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!)
THE above works fine. no problems. as per the following coding.
QUESTION :
1.) HOWEVER HOW DO I CHANGE TO SAY 19200,8,N,1 OR OTHERWISE
2.) HOW CAN I CHECK IF THE SETTINGS HAVE CHANGED.

Private Sub Command1_Click()
Dim longvalue As Long
Dim txt As String
Dim txt1 As String
Dim ASHOK(8)
Dim ANAND As Integer
Dim ASHOK1 As String
Dim J As Integer
J = 1
Dim ff
ff = FreeFile

ASHOK1 = "1C0100000000FFE4"
For i = 1 To Len(ASHOK1) / 2
ASHOK(i) = Mid(ASHOK1, J, 2)
J = J + 2
Next i
Open "com1:" For Output As #ff ( OPENED PORT HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Text1.Text = ""
For ANAND = 1 To 8
Text4.Text = ASHOK(ANAND)
Text1.Text = Text1.Text + " $" + Text4.Text
txt = CLng("&H" & Text4.Text)
txt1 = Chr$(txt)
Print #ff, txt1;
Next ANAND
Close #ff
however

Serial Communication Through Virtual COM Port
I've written a program using VB2005 that communicates with a device via RS232. Everything was working fine until I tried connecting to the device through a virtual COM port. I'm using a B&B Electronics serial server to convert from serial to ethernet. B&B product info
There is software that comes with the serial server that installs a virtual com port and can control how it is set up. I'm pretty new to this, but as far as I can tell, the VB program shouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a physical port. At first I thought either the hardware or virtual com port were set up wrong, but I am able to communicate with the device using a separate program called Docklight. Docklight info It's just a tool for testing purposes, but it works. I am able to send data and receive responses from the device using Docklight, but not the VB program. I haven't changed anything in the code except change the port from "COM1" to "COM3" where the virtual port is. Does anyone have any experience using virtual ports or have any ideas of what I could try to get it working with VB?

2 Computer Parallel Port Communication
I've set up two computers, one windows and the other linux, to communicate via a RS-232 serial connection. It does it just fine, and it was quite simple to do. But the overall data speed is VERY slow (11.2KBs max) and I need something closer to the MBs range. I have 2-4MB files I need to transfer in sub 15sec range. I HAVE to use a shielded port for EMI reasons. Anyone tried such a thing?

Serial Port Communication With PIC Microcontroller
Hi, I am a beginner in VB and I just have a question regarding the MSComm which is used for RS232 communications. I am using a PIC microcontroller (ucontroller) to send A/D (Analog to Digital) Conversion results to the PC via the COM1 so that VB process that raw results to some useful data to be displayed on the form window text box.

Since the PIC is an 8 bit ucontroller, it will send 8 bits at a time via UART although the A/D result is in a 10 bit format => i.e. 0000 00xx xxxx xxxx. I was wondering it is possible to have VB coded in such a way that it will receive the two 8 bit A/D result as one 16 bit number, e.g. 0x03 and 0x1F as 0x031F directly as the PIC ucontroller will send the A/D result 1 byte at a time, namely the high byte which is 0x03 and then followed by the low byte 0x1F.

My initial idea is, prior to sending the high byte, I intend to put a ASCII char, e.g. 'D' and have VB scan for 'D's each time in a loop and when it detects it, VB will receive the high byte and pass it to a variable and the same follows for the low byte to another variable. After this, I perform a logical shift to the left to make the high byte 0x03 to 0x300 and add the lower byte 0x01F to become 0x31F. Then I will use mathematics to translate the data to be displayed on the form window.

I haven't write any codes for this yet as I just figured this idea earlier today and I thought I refer my idea to you guys to see whether it is usable or if there are better approach to this.

Look forward towards some pointers and hints. Thx!

Closing Communication Port Using Vb Code
Plz let me know if i can close the communication port using vb code in order that i may cut off the internet connection through vb code.

Serial Port Communication VB5/6/Access VBA
I am trying to get Access 97 VBA to read a serial port using API functions instead of MSComm. I need the program to read a value coming from a digital scale to com2 and automatically enter it into a form.

I know it can be done using MSComm but I don't want to use that - does anyone know how it can be done using CreateFile() and ReadFile() API functions.

Many thanks

Ms Outlook With Vb/Vba And Serial Port Communication
I wanted to know the possible ways or communicating with msoutlook and vb/vba , with the lcd device, using serial port.

I want to know if its possible to design the appointment system in ms outlook to store information,importantant dates and times etc.
but using some vba is it possible can you help please...if not, advice or suggestion ....

Im starting a project is to allow people to make an appointment to see me, to leave a message via a keyboard and display mounted on or near the my door. I have the display a small text-only LCD (e.g. 2 lines of20 characters) that i want ,interfaces to the serial port of the PC. The keyboard outside the my door, would be a standard PC keyboard connected to a dedicated PC inside the my room. This is be an old machine running and would send the data from the keyboard to the serial port of the main PC.

I would enter times that im avaliable for appointments into the calendar in Microsoft Outlook running on his or her office PC. When a someone wishes to make appointment via the keyboard and display outside the door, he or she would be able to see a list of free times and select one. This appointment would then appear on the calendar in Microsoft Outlook on my PC. This project will involve programming in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

can any one help me please, or any idea where i can start?
i downloaded lcdc for the programming of the lcd but, not sure because im new to this area of lcd and vba...

serial port and com ports have to be used i think not sure...

Advice On Serial Port Communication
Hi people,

I am supposed to communicate with a cashcard reader through the COM port but i have no previous experience interfacing with it.

I do not have one in my office but i am able to borrow it for two days for testing.

To maximize the two days, i hope to be more prepared. i have read up on some basic vb codes on communicating with it already.
But i do not know how can i verify whether my codes work anot..

e.g whether it received the string it should receive
Can you guys give some advice?

- I heard some people saying a DLL file of the reader, if i do get it.. how am i going to make use of that to communicate with the reader.

-if i do not get it , how am i going to communicate with the reader.. e.g. i send some trings over and can verify that it has receveived it .
very basic testing..

- what else should i look out for / other helpful advice

I need to test some basic two-way communication with it.

thanks

VBSCript And Serial Port Communication
We have an internet based mapping application. The application uses java script to allow the user to enter a latitude and longitude and then the web based application scrolls the map they are looking at to the latitude/longitude supplied by the user and places an X on the screen. It does all this using javascript.

We are taking it to the next logical step...GPS tracking.

We have a GPS tracking device. It connects to the serial port.

We know that VB will read the port and actually get the lat/long supplied by the GPS tracking device. What we don't know how to do is how do we get the VB application to call the JavaScript on the web page and supply that script with our data.

We were thinking that maybe we could simply do all of it with VBScript on the web page but are unsure as to how to get VBScript to talk to the serial port.

Any ideas? :-)
