Winhttp Post Help

I am trying to upload some pdf files to our coldfusion server. I can do it with a normal html form with no problem. But i am trying to do it in visual basic. I found this sniplet of code and thought it was my answer. I can upload url variables with it but when it comes to the file field I can not figure out where to name the form field and without a form field name coldfusion does not see the file.

Question: should I continue trying to figure it out using winhhtp or is there a better way.

WinHTTP Post Using VB NET Not Works
I am working on one VB.NET application where I am using WinHttp.dll to post request on website.

First request is for Login Page and I have gone through all input types of that page and pass those variables and value pair in Send method of WinHTTPRequest but it is not works.

Let' me inform you that this login page has viewstate hidden input type, so should I have to pass it in post string (String for Send method argument)

list of Input types are

Name Value Type
Arg1 3 Hidden
_ViewState Some Value Hidden
UserID "Test" Text
PWD "Test" Password
SignIn "Sign In" Button (works as Submit)

I create post string as
First Attempt:
"Arg1=3&_ViewState&UserID=Test&PWD=Test&SignIn=Sign IN"
Second Attempt: without _ViewState
"Arg1=3&UserID=Test&PWD=Test&SignIn=Sign IN"
Third Attempt:without _ViewState and SignIn

Action page in Form tag is same aspx as login aspx page.

when I try like

Response = WinHTTPRequestObj.ResponseText

Response will be contain same page as Login aspx page

So, can you please help me

WinHttp Com Object And "POST"
Is there anyway to send POST commands to a http server with winHTTP?

Like for example...

Send a post to imageshack to upload images... etc...

If so how do I do this?

i have the same problem and i am looking for vb samples to use the winhttp-api with VB6 too. So I've just started to write a class to wrap the winhttp-api.

Have you found anything to solve your problem?

My problem is, the winhttp ActiveX-Component cannot be used for reading certificate infos and i need this feature to control a https-Connection.

Thank you for your answer.

Edit by Iceplug: Regardless of how similar your problem is, don't ask a question in someone else's thread

Does anyone have some vb6 information on winhttp, how to use it, what it can be useful for etc.

I looked on the web and msdn, but most of its C++ , or not very helpful

VB And WinHttp
I'm new to this forum and very impressed. What I am trying to do is interact with a government web site using VB. I am new to the concept of interacting with a web site but have done a lot of research and I would like to use WinHttp as it seems the easiest to understand. I understand the GET and POST aspect of it, but am confused as to how to apply it.

This web site has a place to put up to six loan numbers at a time. When you hit the submit button, a table appears giving you a status of the loan numbers. What I am hung up on is how to do I post my loan numbers to the input boxes and then pull out the status of the loan from the table? I would like to take the results of the table and put it into a text file so I can import it into a database. We literally look up hundreds of loans and I want to try to automate this process. I have attached a screen print of what the website looks like.

I have viewed the source of the web site and know the names of the input boxes. I'm not sure the name of the table.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Post Info To A URL Using Asp Script And Getting Results Like Http Method Post.
I am trying to find script or just where to start.
I want to use asp script (server side) to post some hidden info to another server(URL), then get the info back from the return page and parse through the text to return a page based on the text in the return page.
I Don't want to have the user forwarded to the page that the post is going to I just want to post info to the URL and get the data back. Then create a page based on the data.
Any help with this will be much appreciated.

WinHTTP Problem?

I have several apps that use the WinHTTP dll to send GET and POST messages to a server. Because i needed a control that handles cookies, i previously used the Inet Control. I have encountered problem with both controls, however WinHTTP has been significantly the most reliable.

WinHTTP seems to freeze intermittently for no apparent reason. My error handling catches the following error:
-2147483638 "The data necessary to complete this operation is not yet available."
As far as i can tell, this indicates that WinHTTP is still busy, although this control offers no parameter to check the ready state. I have deliberately avoided using the "WaitForResponse" parameter and use "SetTimeouts" with all values set to 5000.

I'm currently testing performance with a ".Abort" included in my error handling which should kill any incomplete requests and allow the next one to send successfully. As it could be several days until i know if this mod has resolved the problem, i'd like to hear from others who have experienced similar problems with WinHTTP...

Winhttp, A Brief Explanation.
Hi there,

I am trying to create an application that completely automates a registration process on a webform.
After reading up on the best aproach to do this i figured Winhttp would be the way to go ( correct me if i'm wrong. ).
Now i do understand how to retrieve headers and such from a website, but since i have never tried to make VB automate http requests i am in a total blank.

For now, what i'd like to do is go to a website and just fill in a username and password and POST the form. I'm sure i'll be able to figure it out from there.

Also, i don't know if this is tricky, Theres a button coded in javascript somewhere later in the project. Is this a problem , or how would you go by it?

Your help is much appreciated!

WinHTTP Cookies.
lol, simple question, not sure how simple the response will be but I haven't found any good documentation about it.
How would I clear the cookies in winhttp?

Winhttp.dll Replacement Module
does anyone know of a .bas module I can use instead of winhttp.dll?

WinHTTP Certificate Problem
Hello group,

I'm using WinXP SP1, VB6 SP6.

I have put together a program that uses winhttp to retrieve text from a secured https site. In order to do this, my code refers to a certificate for client authentication (requested by the web site), in addition to dealing with a proxy server for internet access. With the exception of one user, everything works well. This user has another certificate from a different authority, where the Common Name is identical to the certificate that my app uses. Does anyone know how I can get my code to select a certificate, given more specific parameters?

Below you'll find a relevant excerpt of my code.

VB Code:
Public WinHttpReq As WinHttp.WinHttpRequestConst HTTPREQUEST_SETCREDENTIALS_FOR_SERVER = 0Const HTTPREQUEST_SETCREDENTIALS_FOR_PROXY = 1Const HTTPREQUEST_PROXYSETTING_PROXY = 2 Sub getData(sUrl As String)On Error GoTo eh:    Dim bDone As Boolean    Dim iAttempts As Long    Dim vData As Variant    Dim vHor As Variant     'Create an instance of the WinHttpRequest object.    Set WinHttpReq = New WinHttpRequest        ' Initialize local variables.    bDone = False    iAttempts = 0     With WinHttpReq        .Open "GET", sUrl, False        .Option(WinHttpRequestOption_SslErrorIgnoreFlags) = 13056        .SetClientCertificate ("CURRENT_USERMYaCertificate")        Do            iAttempts = iAttempts + 1                On Error Resume Next                .Send                If Err.Number = -2147012867 Then                    .SetProxy 2, "proxy", "*"                    .Send                End If                On Error GoTo eh:                Select Case .Status                    Case 200                        bDone = True                    Case 401                        If bSuccess = False Then                            frmLogin.Show                        End If                        .SetCredentials strUser, strPass, 0                        bDone = False                    Case 407                        If bSuccess = False Then                            frmLogin.Show                        End If                        .SetCredentials strUser, strPass, 1                        bDone = False                End Select        Loop Until bDone Or (iAttempts > 3)        ' additional code handles data manipulation    End WithEnd Sub

Very Basic Winhttp Question
i'm making a simple .exe i can put on my parents machine and some other people i help, sort of like a dynamic DNS idea. basically it just hits a script i've setup so i can record their IP address, so i can use remote desktop to get into their machines when they have a problem.

Private Sub Form_Load()
Set objHTTP = New WinHttpRequest
Call objHTTP.Open("GET", "", False)
' do these work? how do i ensure the connection is cleaned up?
Form1.Enabled = False
Set Form1 = Nothing
End Sub

the code is above. it's quite simple, and it works - for the most part. basically i just want to have the app run and then stop. i know you have to set the form to "nothing" or something like that. i've done it in the past but for some reason can't figure it out this time.

also, does anyone know if that will clean up the TCP connection, or if it does it on it's own? last thing i want is my little program to continuously eat more resources the more times it runs.

thanks in advance!

Redirecting Response From WinHTTP To Browser
Hi all,

I had almost scout thru the entire world wide web but is unable to find an answer to my problem.

Here is what I need to do using VB6.

clicking on a button will open up a browser to a SSL certificate website. username/password is set in the program such that it will automatically logon to the page.

i had managed to do both the functions separately.
1) Open a browser that goes to a certain URL. (using this method described here ( & also using the Microsoft Internet Controls method (

2) Using WinHTTPRequest COM object, create a program to automatically login to the URL and get the response. (but in the format of HTML header and body.)

What I need to do is to incorporate both the functions together so that i can open a browser so that the page will be automatically logged in and the page info displayed on the page.

Is there a way to direct the output from the WinHTTPRequest to a Browser?

thanks in advance!

Good Question - Winhttp And Certificate
Hi all,
I am using Winhttp to connect to an HTTPS website (secure). The website requires a client to be sent. Now, if I make a VB porgram and run it on my computer, I am able to get the program to connect and send the client certificate to the HTTPS website. Now, my problem is that, I made this whole connection process as a DLL. I tested this dll from a VB application and it works great. If I try to do the same with ASP, meaning if I try to call the DLL from ASP, it works great for normal connections but not connections that require sending of certificates! I get 'a certificate is required to complete the connection' error from HTTPS if I try it from the web (ASP) or calling the DLL from ASP. This may be very confusing and I tried it on different machines and same thing.

My theory is that winhttp is unable to get certificates from the certificate store when it's called from ASP. Simply for (maybe) permission issues. Where are certificates stored? I know they are in the registry, but where exactly? I need heklp please. I do not get why winhttp is unable to send a certificate using ASP but can do it when called from VB normally or as a DLL.

thanks. Any help will do.

WinHttp SetTimeout Property Not Working

I am using the microsoft's winhttp.dll in my application.
In my application i am using this line of code
objWinHttp.SetTimeouts 30000, 30000, 30000, 30000
What i am doing in my application is that i am trying to connect to an address and if it fails it connects to second address.
My question is when i am specifying 30 sec timeout it should wait till 30 sec and then connect to second address but when i tested i connects immediately.Can anybody know why this is happening and what other parameter i need to set to wait it for 30 sec before it connects to second address
Early help will be appreciated.

Can't Detect The Redirect Url W/ WinHTTP/XMLHTTP

xHttpReq.Open "head", sUrl, False
Debug.Print xHttpReq.Status
Set xHttpReq = Nothing
Exit Sub

MsgBox "E: " & Err.Number & " - " & Err.Description

sUrl = "" or
sUrl = ""

VB will raise an exception that has a description like this
"E: -2147012889 - The server name or address could not be resolved"
This error is the same in XMLHTTP.status (= 12007)

Set xHttpReq = CreateObject("MSXML2.XMLHTTP.3.0")
xHttpReq.Open "GET", url, False
Debug.Print xHttpReq.status
Set xHttpReq = Nothing

How can I detect above urls that it valid although its redirect to another address?

WinHttp.WinHttpRequest To MSHTML.HTMLDocument
    I use the WinHttp.WinHttpRequest object to get .html pages from the internet. I can have the html source of the page in .ResponseText property of the object.

    If there a way to load this string to a MSHTML.HTMLDocument object? I tried the <object>.all(0).outerHTML=<string> but it comes with an error.

Thanks in advance

Saving A ZIP File Retrieved Through WinHTTP
Forum Members.,

I am using WinHTTP to access a website that returns data in a ZIP file.
Can some one please tell me how to receive this ZIP file and save it to

WinHttp Freezes But MSXML2.XMLHTTP Works
in another thread i was trying to see if anybody might have an answer to the mystery of why (using MSXML2.XMLHTTP) after logging in etc, about 1/2 the sites, using the exact same code, will fail and freeze into infinity when trying to download a file and/or attachment.

so it was suggested i try WinHttp. but i have found on my machine w/my internet connection, etc (god forbid i should say WinHttp sux) i cannot even get to first base

here is a perfect example:

Private Sub tofreezeornottofreeze()

Dim http As Object
Set http = CreateObject("WinHttp.WinHttprequest.5.1")
'Set http = CreateObject("MSXML2.XMLHTTP")
URL = ""
http.Open "Get", URL, False
MsgBox http.responseText

End Sub

now, when using WinHttp, the code hangs 4ever, and finally says taking too long error mssg.

but when u switch to the 'old school' MSXML2.XMLHTTP, it hits the web page just like that

other times at other sites, when trying to hit a log in page, winHttp will give me an error page in the response, but, with the exact same link, using MSXML2.XMLHTTP, the log in page comes in w/o a hitch

it looks like WinHttp is not very good anyway. so i come back full circle to wondering about the discrepancy touched on at this other thread

would *really* like to figure this out!

Winhttp To Connect To Servers By Passing Proxy

I have an exe application which uses winhttp to connect to one of our servers.
We are trying to run this application using our clients network through a dialup.
Its not able to connect to the server.Any ideas?.
I though it might be the proxy settings so tried to add this code

"proxy_server:80", "*"

Does any one know how to find a solution to this problem.

Tried To Post This Before, But....
...didn't get any replies. Trying again as I REALLY need an answer to this, or a different forum where i can post this. It seems like a problem that most of you should have encountered at some point:

I have made a VB6 klient program that gets info from a SQL-server through ADODB. The program works fine, both on a client PC at work and on my PC at home. But, when the customer who is going to use it tries to install it, he get's this:
"Some files on your system is out of date. Click ok to update these files or cancel to exit setup."
The user click ok, and after a couple of seconds he is asked to reboot his PC. He does this, and tries to install again, but gets the same message, and can't get the installation started. Does anyone know why? Does this have something to do with "dependency information"... I'm at a loss here....

Post Url
hello people

i have 2 questions:

how do i post a url from a vb application? for example " wolf"
after posting, can i retrieve a value that the url sends back?

Where To Post?
I have been using LISP for six years with AutoCAD (draughting package), however I want the look and feel of a professional program.

I am learning VBA using AutoCAD by working my way through a couple of books (and a whole load of web tutorials).

My program so far draws a diamong shape, resets all the points 10mm along the X-axis and re-draws the shape.

I am trying to find a method of deleting all the lines (e.g. erase all command) before re-drawing them in their new position.

First Post Help
i currently have access 2000 and iam using vb 5.0
every time i need to update database i have to save changes with
diff .mdb, then i have to change the properties on my data control
is there a way around this using a data control.
sorry if this is a stupid question, still learning
r vb5.0 and access 2000 compatible for this?
thank you in advance, any help is greatly appreciated

My 1st Post
OK guys, this is my first post. I aplogize in advance if I'm posting in the wrong place or breaking any forum guidelines! I have created the opening page of a vb6 program. It has four buttons on it. I would like one of the buttons to open to a form where I fill out patient data (This project is for a medical clinic) Please keep in mind this is my first ever project and I know nothing about programming. So, when I double click on the button, the code page comes up. What do I put in the code page to make it where the button takes the user to the form? I know this question probably seems very basic to most of you. I'm green but hungry for knowledge and I'm willing to do what it takes and put the time and effort in. Don't give me fish so I can eat today, teach me to fish so I can eat for a lifetime! Thanks in advance guys/gals and I hope I have as much fun with this as I feel I will!

Why isnt this working

Private Sub Command1_Click()
Dim strURL As String, strFormData As String
strURL = "http://www.*****.com/battle/user/"
strFormData = "loginName=dddd&password=dddd"
Inet1.Execute strURL, "POST", strFormData
End Sub

Private Sub Inet1_StateChanged(ByVal State As Integer)
Text1 = Text1 & Inet1
End Sub
Why does it return "http://www.*****.com/battle/user/" about 30 times, even if I do enter valid login information. I need it to return information so that I can parse it, but it gives me no useful information to work with.

Is it possible to have VB Enter "" into a website Textbox? For example, you load my Vb prog. under "User" you but ur Username....when you click finish all that information you written on the form, goes to the website.mmm lets say yahoo mail. you enter Yahoo ID , and your password. ( from the VB form )

Concerning My Last Post.....
If there is a better way that I can get a report using Data Reports to restrict the report to only the dates I want with or without using DTPicker I am open to suggestions. I have spent 5 to 6 hours trying to figure it out.

Last Please
is it possible to control two images, making them move at the same time using the keyboard? simple question...if so me out please

First Post
Hi all,

Im using visual basic 6 to code a program that automatically fills in forms on a website, multiple users. This is achieved by opening up the webpage and the program sends keys to a javascript form.

First Name:
Last Name:
Confirm Password
Male Or Female
Tick To agree.

Now everything is programed up and working fine apart from the Date of Birth, Gender, and Tick To Agree.

I have 3 Simple questions (I hope)

Question 1 what code is required to fill in the Date Of Birth Section (Note: The date of birth consists of 3 drop down boxes)

Question 2 On the form there is a radio box with 2 options Male or female, again what code is required to make a selection.

Question 3 On the form there is a tick box which must be ticked, what code is required to do this?

I hope these are 3 simple questions but I've been strugling with this for quite a while now, and hope someone here will be able to help.

Need Help, Not Sure Where To Post.
hello, i'm new here, not sure what catagory this falls under.
i will try to explain as simple as i can.

i'm trying to re-create my old Link generator i once had.
it has 4 boxes, 1 is invisible.

text1.text is for URL addresses such as
text2.text is for how many Links it should create let's say 5
text3.text is for the extension such as ".Jpg"
text4.text is invisible, it is used to read all text in those 3 boxes combined.

code is: (from memory, may be mistaken)

open "Links.html" as output #1
close #1
text4.text = text1.text + text2.text + text3.text

i need help with the Number generating portion.
the outcome should Create a Links.Html file in the same Dir as the .exe
which contains

clickable of course, so i would need to use <h Ref=blah blah type coding.

Well i searched for this and sore no relevant information, how do you post information to a php page? im not sure how too do this. i could perhaps pass it as variables in the url and then use HTTP_GET_VARS? Thanks for your help, im beginner at heart really
