High Capacity External HDDs Not Getting Recognized

Nov 19, 2015

I recently upgraded my desktop from Windows XP Pro to Windows 10 Pro but have had no luck yet accessing the data on either of my two external HDDs even though my system is fully updated with Threshold 2.

The external HDDs are as follows:

WD My Book 1TB (USB 2.0) NTFS
Hitatchi Touro Desk Pro 2TB (USB 3.0) NTFS

Neither appear in File Explorer but they are correctly identified in Devices and Printers. They also appear in Disk Management but are listed as “unknown” and “not initialised”. I get an I/O device error if try to initialize them using MBR or a “disk is not convertible because the size is less the minimum size for GPT disks” error message if I choose GPT.

I have also tried plugging the external HDDs into different USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0) and re-installing the "USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device" driver in Device Manager but all to no avail.

I know both my external HDDs still work fine as they were recognized and readable when I tried them on a different Windows 7 machine. I am also fairly confident that the Windows 10 installation is OK on my target PC as I did a clean install from a bootable ISO file.

I read somewhere that Windows 10 may have an issue with external HDDs over a certain capacity, and sure enough, when I hooked up an aged 250MB external HDD it worked straight away, no problem.how I can get Windows 10 to recognize external HDDs with a higher capacity?

File History With 2 External HDDs

Jul 5, 2015

I currently do File History with 1 external HDD as everyone else does. I have a spare external HDD that is just gathering dust. I wonder if I could do File History with 2 external HDDs? Will I run into trouble if I did?

The idea is that I could do File History with the 2 external HDDs on alternate days, so if the internal HDD and one external HDD happen to die on the same day (very, very unlikely, I know) I lose just one day of backup at the most.

External HD Not Being Recognized

Mar 23, 2016

So after rebuilding my desktop, I boot everything up and do all the right things(drivers updated and whatnot). Before I do this though I make sure all of my USB plugins are in the exact same place they were in on the old machine(This probably doesn't mean anything but Im neurotic). I go to access my external and I can't find it! I go into the bios and it recognizes that there is a HD attached but no drive letter or anything. I try disk manager but all i see is my 2 tb on an empty letter area.

Drivers/Hardware :: Moving AVI Files To External Drive / Drive Not Recognized And Lost All

Apr 14, 2016

I was moving video files (AVI) from an external backup drive (WD Element) to another external backup drive (Seagate expansion) after having moved another video file from my laptop (Acer) to that Seagate external drive. The night before I had moved some video files from the WD to the Seagate with no problem but using a different laptop (Sony). These video files are all rather large and I can tell that the space is still being allocated on the Seagate because while the folder cannot be seen the space that was there is still being used by the Seagate because I am missing over 100GB which would be about the size of that now missing folder.

What happened was there was a message that the Seagate drive could not be recognized while the files were in the process of being moved to that drive from the WD. This is after I had already moved a video file of about 26GB with no problem into that now missing folder. When I saw the message I attempted several times to move files to that Seagate drive but I could not so I unplugged the Seagate drive from that laptop (Acer) then reinserted it into the usb port. I got a repair message that said it needed to be repaired because some files were corrupted and that no data would be lost but the drive would be unavailable during the repairs so I checked ok. It took only about 30 seconds and it said the repairs were completed and the drive was available but I noticed that the folder that I was moving the video files to was not gone.

As I stated there are more than 100GB of files in that folder some are video and others are audio recordings that were created by using the myrecording (audio and video) features of the Acer laptop and they are very important so I need to figure out if they can be retrieved from that Seagate drive. I have not copied anything else onto that Seagate drive but I have plugged it into the Acer computer to ensure it is being recognized. Both the external drives WD and Seagate are plug and play that are powered from the usb -- they have no power adapters.

What Is The Capacity Of OneDrive

Oct 28, 2015

What's the capacity of OneDrive on Win 10 Pro x64? I see it in the Users folder. If you save a backup disk to OneDrive, from a non-system disk on your system, does it take up twice as much space on the PC's storage? If so, then the folders and files would be in three places. Or, is it that the files and folders are on the cloud and just the non-system disk?

2 HDDs - How To Do A Completely Fresh Install With No Remains On Either HDD

May 21, 2015

As the title says the plan is to install the latest build of Windows 10 to my SSD.

Aside from the SSD which is for the OS I have a standard HDD. How do I go about formatting both hard drives so they're completely fresh?

Will the W10 install automatically format my SSD and then it would just be a case of going into Computer and formatting the HDD?

Drivers/Hardware :: Internal SATA HDDs - Convert To NAS Storage

Dec 14, 2015

I've about 4 SATA HDD's that I've removed from computers that I've junked -- all SATA about 12 TB.

Is it possible to build an enclosure and create a NAS drive -- I can easily make external USB drives but I think a NAS storage system would be better. What I need to do --should in theory be easy just need some sort of network card and an OS.

Recovery Partition Is 95GB - Why Does It Consume 1/5th Of SSD Capacity

Aug 13, 2015

Pretty much exactly what the title says. After upgrading from win7 => win10 I migrated over to an Samsung 840EVO ssd with 500gb capacity and before I knew it, the capacity was almost already full. I scaled back some of my media storage to an external HD but I still want to minimize this partition.

Basically, why is this partition so big? Surely a recovery sector doesn't need to be that big... and secondly how to scale this back if its even possible (preferably without having to wipe the drive and re-formatting/partitioning it) Its currently ~100% free.

Ηow To Restore Capacity Of Hard Disk After Image Recovery

Aug 5, 2015

I have 3 HDD's (2 internals (1 SSD 120 GB and 1 HDD-Sata 200 GB) and 1 external USB HDD (2 TB)). I have installed Windows 10 Pro x64 final οn the SSD 120 GB without problems and i have installed the extra programs that i use, also without problems. Then i decided to make an image backup to the external USB HDD. The image created succesfully. After that, i have removed the SSD 120 GB, installed the HDD-Sata 200 GB and tried to check to the HDD-Sata 200 GB if the Windows image recovery works. I used the Windows installation DVD and the external USB HDD to do the recovery.

The image recovered normally and the HDD works like as if i was using the SSD 120 GB. So my problem now is with the capacity of the HDD-Sata 200 GB which is shown as 120 GB. So any way to restore the capacity of that HDD again back to 200 GB? I don't want to format the disk now, just continue to use it as a backup disk just in case of failure of my SSD one. I know that i cannot use the HDD Capacity Restore Tool, because it is working only with 32-bit systems (which i currently don't have one right now) and even if i use it i don't know if it will restore my disk to full capacity but in a state that requires format from the begin (something that i am trying to avoid).

So in general, my question is how to restore the capacity of a hard disk after image recovery (when you backup to a new hard disk with capacity bigger than the capacity of the disk that i want to backup).

Summary Capacity And Usage Greater Than Disk / Partition Size

Jan 11, 2016

re Settings -> System -> Storage

It seems as though Windows 10 can add some, but not necessarily all new or detected partitions to an aggregate capacity under the label This PC (C: ) Even if the partitions are empty NTFS or RAW (inc. Linux Swap?) also include them as usage: 'System & reserved.' I haven't able to discern a pattern of how Windows 10 determines if a new or empty formatted partition will be added to the aggregate Storage summary. At best it's confusing, and appears to be broken.

Further: deleting some partitions, or shutting down, unplugging disks and rebooting does not necessarily alter the reported aggregate that is shown for This PC (C: ) i.e. You would expect removing all drives and partitions to restore This PC (C: ) status to show only the Windows partition capacity - it doesn't and it continues to show 100s extra GB that are no longer present on the PC.

E.g. on my previous install I was seeing an impossible 239GB 'system & reserved' with 323GB 'capacity.'

My system:

Windows 10 & 7 partitions each = 100GBWindows disk total capacity = 223GBOther disks, mix of NTFS, EXT4 (Mint 17, /home) Swap (Linux)

N.B. I've tried this a couple of ways with fresh installs on clean disks and see the same result. It doesn't make a difference if Windows 10 or Windows 7 is installed first. I have made the partition order:

recovery|efi|msr|windows|other

Other things that make no difference:

Removing or assigning new disk lettersFor both Windows 10 and Windows 7:

Hibernation is disabled (from admin cmd terminal)Page-file management to be on C: only (other disks set to none)

At the moment I am unsure if this is merely a 'cosmetic' issue or something that might cause more serious functionality problems later e.g. not being able to install since Windows incorrectly thinks a drive or partitions are used or reserved.

Drivers/Hardware :: CD / DVD ROM Not Recognized

Jan 6, 2016

Yesterday I inserted a CD to install driver for my new headset. The CD-R open, close normally and I also heard the CD spinning. But not thing happened in my laptop at all. I checked This PC: no CD drive (before upgraded to win 10, I had installed win 8.1 and the CD dive was drive F). In Device Manager, there's no CD/DVD ROM section, even i had checked Show hidden device in View tab.I tryed every methods found online, but not fixed. Here's the details:

1. Try ALL METHODS in this link: [FIX] Optical Drives (CD/DVD) Icon Not Showing in My Computer Window - AskVG
-> nothing
2. Try to uninstall Channel 0 and 1 under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller. But as you can see in the picture above: there are no Channels under IDE...Controller. Tryed to uninstall Intel(R) 8 Series...Controller and rebooted, nothing happen
3. Try to update drivers using IOBit Drivers Booster PRO but all drivers are up-to-date.

USB Drive No Longer Recognized?

Jan 7, 2016

I got a 128GB Flash Drive which I proceeded to install a portable, bootable Fedora install on. Of course, naturally, since Fedora is light weight, I had all sorts of other room left over. However, when I plug the USB drive back into the main Desktop, it no longer asks me what I want to do with the USB drive, even with AutoPlay stuff disabled. It's as if the USB Drive doesn't exist.

However, I checked quickly on one of my laptops that has never seen the drive and the AutoPlay on that device immediately popped in. When I selected "view files and folders", voila, I could see the Flash Drive with a folder for the Fedora install and plenty of other open space. How can I force my computer to see this Flash Drive all over again? it's doing the same thing with the storage on my fiance's iPhone. since I can't see her phone anymore when I plug it in (even iTunes doesn't see it).

Windows 7 Is Not Recognized - How To Upgrade

Aug 24, 2015

I have a pre-built laptop with official W7 on it. The HD had a failure last year and since I was too busy to take care of it I gave it to a friend who just cloned it. Result, now Windows is not recognized as legit and no system feature works (including system restore, the search function, Windows updates). I still used it without problems but now I built one for myself and I'm giving the laptop to my father, and thought the best way to clean all that mess was to use the free Windows 10 upgrade to format everything and do a clean install with that.

Is there any way I can "trick" my system in thinking it's legit again so that I can get the free Windows 10 upgrade?
