Downloading Operating Systems

Aug 15, 2015

I have never touched an operating system before. I need to buy an OS for my PC, but I have a few questions before doing so. Firstly, I want to buy 8.1 students as a download. Now I currently don't own a PC so I can't buy it yet. I plan to use my friends PC and download the OS. If I download the OS using his PC, will it try to install 8.1 onto his PC and override his current OS, or will the program just download without doing anything else? If it does the latter, then is it possible to just put it onto a flash drive? Or will we have no choice but to have it install 8.1 to his computer? I never thought about the OS until now.

Cumulative Update For X64 Based Systems

Dec 23, 2015

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3116869). Keep getting "Failed to install on (date)". NO other updates will download, either. Everything seeps to be stuck. Get the message: "There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may work:" The update troubleshooter finds no problems. I have tried to reset the Update process per the instructions supplied by Microsoft. No results there, either. Long story short, I'm not able to get any updates.

Systems Will Need To Reboot To Finish Installation

Oct 22, 2014

We've written before about Windows 10's new updating policy, and today we're seeing the real-world result for the first time. The Windows 10 Technical Preview, build 9849, is being updated to build 9860. That update will roll out automatically to members of the Windows Insider program, and it will be delivered through Windows Update. The operating system upgrade is a little more heavyweight than a regular hotfix; systems will need to reboot to finish installation, and Microsoft says that the reboot will take longer than normal.

The major feature of the new build is that it contains the first iteration of Windows 10's notification center. At the moment, it's a simple collection of historic notifications. Microsoft says that future builds will add more capabilities to the notification center, such as the ability to take actions in response to notifications.First major update to Windows 10 Preview, delivered through Windows Update

Before talking about the new things, I will remind you that you are using a work in progress. As Joe said in his last post, we’re sharing things with you even though there are rough edges. This is the part of building Windows that you usually don’t get to see, since we work hard to smooth these out before it typically gets to you. There are likely many small bugs that you’ll encounter, but these are a few of the big ones that we think you should be aware of right away:

In some places the UI design has gone “backwards” temporarily while we’re working on the final experiences. For example in this build we know that it’s harder to join a Wi-Fi network. We’ll make changes to fix that later.Another example of some UI “roughness” is sometimes Internet Explorer glyphs look garbled and items on the Start menu might disappear. Not everyone will see this, it depends on your display driver. We have a fix for this one coming soon. Some machines may wake up and not go back to sleep properly.Microsoft Solitaire and Mahjong games are broken in some cases and won’t launch. When using 2 external monitors over Display Link, you may get a blue screen when you undock. This does not appear to be an issue when using just 1 external monitor. URL...The download will range between 2GB and 2.74GB depending on CPU architecture and language.Wow, that's like 2 or 3 complete Linux ISO's.

Selected Disk Has MBR Partition Table On EFI Systems - Windows Can Only Be Installed On GPT Disks

Aug 5, 2015

i got the windows 10 upgrade from windows update, downloaded it and installed it. went to microsoft website downloaded windows 10 to put onto a usb drive. before performing a clean install i partitioned my drive and dropped around 230gb of stuff on it (967gb total drive, partitioned 280). when i tried to format the drive i encountered this issue

"windows cannot be installed to the disk. the selected disk has an mbr partition table. on efi systems, windows can only be installed to gpt disks.".

I don't know if the problem is my hdd or my usb drive or my bios. i tried deleting the partition and then pressing new but i continue to get the same error. i tried looking around but i cant make any sense of the posts with this error being solved. one of the posts says to change usb efi to gpt in bios but i dont think that option is in my bios (i can post a picture of bios if needed). another option is to clean the entire disk with cmd but i dont want to lose the other partition.

PC Reset And Now Have No Operating System

Aug 13, 2015

So I upgraded to Windows 10 last week, & after a few days decided I wanted to do the reset feature to have a nice clean install. I was also getting an annoying pop-up error that looked like some sort of malware, but virus & malware scans weren't getting rid of it.

Ok, so I do the reset, & opted for full clean not the quick one, just to make sure I got everything off there. It took quite a long time ( about 15-20 minutes per 1% progress), so I left it & came back later. When I got back I had an error message that said "There was a problem resetting your PC." with my only option being to click cancel. So I did. after that it brought me back to a reset screen, where I attempted to do the quick reset a few times, & it failed after a few percent each time.

At this point I decided to shut down & try again. When I booted back up I was greeted with the lovely message of "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Crtl+Alt+Del to restart"...so my pc was wiped but the reinstall part failed somehow it seems, leaving me with nothing.

I created a bootable usb for Win10 from the Microsoft website, following their instructions to the letter. Installation seems to go fine ( Copying Windows files, Getting files ready for Installation etc). That screen finishes up & I get a Restarting in 10 Seconds screen. I let it restart & then I get stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

I have done some reading on this & tried everything I found, nothing has worked. I've let it sit, tried hitting Crtl to type password then hit Enter, I've unplugged my second monitor & any non essential USB devices, everything. I've tried installing multiple times, to the same result.

Also worth noting that I was unable to revert back to Win7. When I put my 7disc in I get a message saying "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk CD,DVD or USB flash drive, please insert it now."

I've used this disc many times with no issue, & now I can't even reinstall 7?

Installation :: Cannot Locate Operating System

Dec 31, 2015

My dell 7500 has windows 7(C: drive) and windows 10(F: drive) installed on the single internal HDD. It also has three USB disks used only for data. When I boot I get a message saying that an operating system cannot be found and I should try unplugging my USB drives and then reboot. When I unplug the USB drives and re boot, it finds the windows systems and finishes the boot process with no trouble.
Checking the BIOS shows only the CD-Rom drive and the three USB drives are listed in the boot order and the drive listing. I then deactivated the "boot from USB drives" item in my BIOS and then the computer boots fine.

Also, I have been experimenting with Ubuntu on a USB pen drive but have removed it. I suspect that there are some parts of grub hanging around.

Reset Failed - Operating System Not Found

Feb 23, 2016

My Acer Aspire One was upgraded to Windows 10. Eventually, I ran into some issues with the start menu not popping up, so I decided to run a clean reset of Windows 10. The reset failed, so I turned off the notebook. When I turned it back on, the message "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart," popped up. My first option was to try to use either f2 or f12 to see if there was some way to get around the issue, but then I remembered that, recently, my notebook had stopped responding to those commands. I do have a USB Logitech K120 keyboard hooked up to it (since the original keyboard messed up,) but it had been working fine for those commands and such up until now.

Today, I downloaded Win 10 using the Media Creation Tool in an attempt to create a bootable USB drive. I plugged that in, yet it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. The same message pops up as before. My acer doesn't have a CD-ROM or anything of the sort, so the USB appears to be my only hope. Is there anything that I can do? I'm hoping there's a way I can force the notebook to recognize the USB, or at least boot into the f2 or f12 commands to see if I can use them in any way.
