Database Over Network With User Permissions And Passwords

Dec 19, 2006

Hi guys,

I have very nearly completed designing and making a database for stock control for my company, and am now a little concerned on how it is going to be implemented. It is going to be done over a network, with only a handful of users. The idea is to have every user log in but with each person having different permissions. i.e onl;y being able to access maybe one or two forms, but also having an administrator that can view every form. Now, i am aware of the security settings in the tools menu, would this be the appropriate way, or would i have to creat an empl;yee table and set permissions thropugh vb? This is the first database i have constructed and need a little help!

The second problem is that the database will be over a network. Would i have to put the backend in one place and then have the front end installed on all the pc s and just access the backend when i its needed? Forgive me if this sounds a bit stupid but as i have said this is new to me..

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

General :: Database Security / User Permissions?

Nov 6, 2014

I have some Databases that were created back in Access 97 and have managed to upgrade these databases to work in Access 2013, fixing any modules and forms which broke when upgrading the databases.User access and permissions within the database were controlled by User Level Security (the Workgroup.mdw file) which is not secure anyway I guess, as someone could easily copy the entire database.

The database as it stands now works perfectly in Access 2013, however anyone can do anything with the database which is my main issue. Im wanting to limit access for certain forms / tables / reports to certain users, then out right deny other users from accessing the database.

Ive seen the SQL Server 2014 Migration Assistant for Access, which looks to store the tables on SQL server then map these to the Access database, so i guess i could deny certain users from accessing tables that way, or only allow them to read the tables. However I'm not sure how that would lock them out of certain forms / reports and queries in the databases?

Network Permissions For A Split DB

Mar 28, 2005

I'm running a split DB over the network, and all of the users in past un-split DB's have to have permissions granted or they can't open the DB. My question is, if I'm running the BE and FE on the server, do permissions have to be assigned to both the FE and BE or is it enough to give permissions for just the FE? The only reason that the FE is on the server is so that the user can copy it and paste it to their desktop, then refresh the links to the tables.

General :: Multi User Database With No Network And Without Server?

Sep 19, 2012

I am developing a database for a company with about 10 users of the DB each using the DB on their own PC/Mac.

The workplace does not have a network. All work is done and stored on their own computers. They do not have a server either.

They do have a BT Business Hub providing broadband both wired and wirelessly.

The database is built using Access 2010.

I need to set up user groups/permissions on the database so certain staff can only see certain forms/tables etc...

What are my options here?

There is money available to buy a server or whatever. But ideally if there is another way of storing it and doing it, then I would like to give that a try.

I was reading somewhere you can use the Hub to create a small network, is this possible? And if so, whats the set up process for this?

Database Permissions (NTFS Permissions, Really)

Aug 13, 2007

Can anyone tell me what the ideal NTFS persmissions should be for users who are only inputting data to an Access database?

Would Read, Write, & Execute on the networked folder where the BE resides be enough for the users to update the database?

Thanks!

How To Edit User Passwords In Access

May 31, 2006

I have finished my database and I have started getting the user level security all setup. I have all the permissions and users working fine except that as I was creating the accounts I entered phony passwords thinking that once i had everything worked out, it would be easy to edit them or change them to real ones, but I cannot figure out how to do that.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Access Front End User Permissions

Dec 8, 2006

Hi,

I have an Access front end that has linked tables to a SQL Server back end database. The connection to the back end is a via a read only user because the front end is a reporting tool for querying, viewing and reporting on the data. I am able to view the data in the front end and set up new queries. However my user has the new query icon greyed out. I have not set up any kind of permissions or security levels to my knowledge so am a little mystified as to why their permissions should be different to mine! Does anyone have any ideas please?

General :: Creating Separate User Permissions Without VBA?

Aug 19, 2014

The problem is I need it to be only editable by 1 user, but allowing multiple other users to access it and view the records- just not able to add/edit/delete them.

The other question I had about the Split database would be- Does having a split database mean the data needs to be updated in 2 tables or am I taking Splitting databases too literally?

Database Users And Passwords

Aug 2, 2005

I would really like to have a better understanding of the secrurity that comes with access. I would like my DAP to be able to log in with the previleges given for each user. I would also like these previledges to work when someones opens the database with access, however, whenever I set the secureity stuff, copy the database to the fileserver, I can then open it with another computer without any problems. Why is this? Thanks guys, I'n new here.

Accessing The Database With Passwords

Jan 7, 2005

I have a database of books that contains all the informations about the books in a library, and ofcourse the forms for accessing the database ie searching adding editing and all this, is it possible in access to make a restriction so that only the administrator can edit or add to the database and the other users can only search for books and print reports
I know the logic of creating a password table and a form with a username and a password which checks if the user can access and then open the corresponding form (using isvisible property for the edit and add botton)
but even if i did that the user in reality can see the tables and the forms of the database and can change them directly
please if anyone has an idea??????
thanks

General :: Security And User Read / Write Permissions - Access 2010

Jul 19, 2013

I'm a SQL Server DBA and have a few Access 2010 Db's to look after and occasionally have to make amendments to (as is the case today). I've been asked to apply permissions to certain users of the Access database whereby users in a group we're calling 'Viewer' only have read permission and users in another group called 'Writer' (original I know!) have both read and write permission.

The database is form driven (i.e. no-one directly accesses and amends the tables in the database), the file is saved with a .mdb extension.

I've played around with the 'Manage Users & Permissions' in the File Menu however these don't seem to do what I need them to and only result in having to input a user and password to access the database on start-up.

Database Permissions - Can Not Open

Oct 19, 2006

I have copied a work database onto my flash drive and then onto my laptop to do some work in it.

Now I can not open the database because it has the error message.

You do not have the necessary permissions to use the database etc...

I have copied the Application file, the Data file and the Workgroup information file and the only one I can open is Workgroup information file. I have tried holding the shift key down as well.

Any suggestions as I have heaps of work to do and I have tomorrow away from work to do it.

Login Form With Network User And Password?

Nov 27, 2014

Into the form named: Administratorsfrm, I added a textbox defined as usertxt and also a textbox named passwordtxt as well as a button named logincmd.

The user defined is the Network user and this is added automatically to the usertxt field everytime when I open the Administratorsfrm form. To do this I use the next code:

Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer)
Dim wshNetwork As Object 'New wshNetwork
Set wshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
Me.Usertxt = wshNetwork.UserName
Set wshNetwork = Nothing
End Sub

I would like that the user types his/her password (Network password or Unlocking computer) and after this could Login to the database application. I mean, the user will type his password and then the event should compare the password typed with the network password or unlocking password and if this is correct should open the database application (Main Menu Form: Mainfrm)

Automated Mail Merge: Problem With One User On The Network

Jun 19, 2006

Hi,
I have searched the forums but cant seem to find a similar problem anywhere.

I am using a shared Access Database over a network with 8 users. I can successfully run an automated mail merge to Word with the following code;

********
Dim stDocName As String
stDocName = "qryCreateCandidateCVBasicDetails"
DoCmd.SetWarnings False
DoCmd.OpenQuery stDocName, acNormal, acEdit

Dim objWord As Word.Document
Set objWord = GetObject("X:CRS DocumentsDatabase TemplatesCRS CANDIDATE CV.dot", "Word.Document")
objWord.Application.Visible = True

objWord.MailMerge.OpenDataSource _
Name:="X:CRS DocumentsCRS DatabaseCRS Database V3.mdb", _
LinkToSource:=True, _
Connection:="tblCandidateCV1", _
SQLStatement:="SELECT * FROM [tblCandidateCV1]"

objWord.MailMerge.Destination = wdSendToNewDocument
objWord.MailMerge.Execute
objWord.Application.Documents(2).Close wdDoNotSaveChanges

Set objWord = Nothing
**********

For some reason on one of the PC's will not run this code; instead of executing the merge they get a message asking them to connect to a data source. It is possible to then browse and connect to the data source manually - but I cant understand why it isnt executing properly and merging the data automatically.

4 PC's on the network are running Windows XP Pro, the others are on Windows 2003. The PC with the problem is running on 2003 (although others with the same software seem to work fine).

Can anyone shed any light on this or suggest anything I could try to resolve this problem.

Any feedback would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Forms :: Network User Login With Privileges And Audit Trail

Dec 19, 2013

I am in the process of creating a database with multiple tables. Multiple users access through network with access data back end on server and Different Forms with user and group access of MS Access. The file is in mdb format and current version of MS Access used by all my users is Access 2007.

Requirements :

1. User Login (Access user login preferred as, one can set permission for read only, write permission for specific field etc.) But whether if any user who has readonly rights create his own db, wont be able to edit their own because of the rights that i have set rights in their pc??

2. need to fetch this user id with time stamp in each table to find who has altered the data, though audit trail table with ip address will be ideal.

3. Hide the navigation pane and ribbon for anyone other than administrator, including office button.

4. User level security is it required to set in every pc where the front end sits or one pc where the data is located.

Distributing A Database Across A Network

Aug 2, 2005

I have a database built in Office 2000.

The client wants it across a network but insists they do not want it split! They want it in a shared drive which everyone has access to via a shortcut.

The database is secured so I presume the Workgroup file will have to be on each PC and a shortcut to the one database on the server which is in a shared mode. Would the security I have implemented still work or would I have to de-secure so everyone has the same level of access.

They do not have Access on all PC's. IFor this to work I presume Access is needed both on the server and PC's

I understand if I purchase Microsoft Access Developers 2000 it has a feature where I can distribute a database to users without Access? However, am I right in assuming this needs the database to be split.

In the UK are there any suggestions on where I can buy Microsoft Access Developers 2000 ?

Many thanks.

Slow Network Database

Feb 7, 2006

This problem is driving me nuts!!
I`ve just spent a fair few months creating a database to be used by our sales team, I`ve about finished it and came to trial it with the sales manager. When he is using the database at the same time as me it becomes slow.
The design has a front end with all the queries, forms etc and a back end on a server containing the tables.
The database was created using Access 2000 and was designed to replace a similair db created on 97 which has a decent speed on the network.
The other strange thing is that one particular macro that I`ve been using for the speed tests runs quite slow (about 3 secs) when 2 pcs have the db open but once the macro has run if it is run again it takes typically less than a second to run.
What would cause a db to run a macro at different speeds after they`ve been run once? I`ve tried everything I can find on the net to try and improve the speed to no avail.
Help please!!

Database On Local Network,need Help

Jan 24, 2005

i have done a database for a library that enables the user to enter the information about the books and search for it, the administrator have the right to enter the info about the books and edit and search the others have more limited rights depending on which group they belong, i used for the connection (currentProject) because i did all the forms and tables in one DB
a friend from this forum told me and i think he s right, that if i want to put it on the network i have to separate the forms and the tables ie save the tables and the queries on another database that i put on the network
i have a problem
1- im not sure how to connect to another database can i do it like this
Dim conDB as ADODB.connection
set conDB=new ADODB.connection
conDB=openDatabase("the path") or not
2-i have done the result form with a record source (search-query) and then inserted the fields into the form in the design view
can i do that with a query if it was from another database or i need to write it all in code (taking into consideration that i havent found how to insert datacontrols and do the binding, because im using french access, that s why i assigned automatically a record source for the form)
thanks in advance
