Enterprise Manager Hangs

Aug 17, 1998

Hi,

SQL Enterprise Manager hangs when any action related to devices is performed. Note that ISQLw works perfectly.

To solve this problem we started by increasing allocated RAM for SQL Server and the the problem was solved for a while, then it is back again.

What factors that make SQL Enterprise Manager hangs in our case ?

Note that the server is never down and clients are connected to databases successfully.

Prompt response and advice will be highly appreciated.
Regards,
Einas (DBA)

Hi there -

I am trying to look at TEMPDB properties in Enterprise Manager but it just hangs forever. I can look at props for all other databases on that server OK. The server is working OK but users reporting performance problems.

Also, how to increase the size of TEMPDB in T-SQL - I can see it is approx 200MB plus 300MB for the transaction log at the moment.

(Microsoft Windows 2003 Std Edition SP1, SQL Server 2000 Std Edition SP3)

Strange Long Disk Reads Using Enterprise Manager

Sep 8, 2001

I recently installed an evaluation copy of SQL Server 2000 on a machine with Windows Server 2000. Nearly all actions in the enterprise manager cause 15-second to 60-second loud, monotonous reads of the hard drive. Anything from expanding a tree item to creating a table.

This makes the product more or less unusable. What could be causing it?

All other software on the machine works normally, and nothing else seems wrong.

I checked Microsoft knowledgebase and no other similar cases popped up. Is anyone else experiencing this?

MDF Disk Fragmentation - Backup And Restore

Jul 23, 2005

If databases on a physical drive [G:] are fragmented, and the drive isextended by adding more hard drives to the array, does it make sense tobackup and restore the fragmented databases? The Windows Server should be able to find contiguous space for eachdatabase, since it shows 75% free space on the SQL Data drive withoutany file fragments on it.Or will it restore to the original location, in which case does it makesense to delete the databases and restore them from the backups?Thank you very much!

May 29, 2006

Hi Everybody,I use MS SQL server 2000 enterprise manager on a windows server 2003.I created a new database in enterprise manager, and try to restore the new database from a .bak file. I went to ---->restore database. I checked "from device" and  select the right path to the .bak file. Then I click ok, but there is an error pop up." tend to override existing database", so I went to --->option, and checked "force override existing database". then I click ok, but get an error look like this      http://ewwa.lo7.net/error.JPGI thought it was a problem with my .bak file. So I try to use another .bak file which I am sure it is 100% good.  It prompt the restore is sucessfully. But when I checked the db, there nothing there(No tables).I think there must be something wrong with my enterprise manager's configuration.Do you know what happen with my enterprise manager? Enterprise Manager Backup Wizard Question

Feb 9, 2004

Is it possible, using the Database Maintenance Plan in Enterprise Manager, to save the backups to another server? It appears that it isn't.

I guess that I was curious as to why you can create a Backup Device and use that functionality when you run the Backup Database option when right clicking a database, but cannot use it within the context of the Maintenance Plan function.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Database Backup Failed With Timeout Expired From Enterprise Manager

Apr 13, 2007

Hi,

I have SQL Server 2000 with SP4. When we take backup from Enterprise manager its fails with error "timeout expired". But when we take backup from query analyzer it works.

It seems that through enterprise manager 30 sec is the non configurable timeout parameter set. Checked sysprocesses table during backup but there was no blocking during that time at least for that spid.

Is there a way to find out which process is blocking the database backup? Also, what are the possible scenarios where database backup can be blocked.

Thanks,

Ramesh

SQL 2000 Enterprise Hangs Upon Install

May 19, 2004

Hi,

I hope someone out there can help, cos i really need it.
We have a 2 node cluster + SAN that will be used as our SQL 2000 servers.
We have setup the cluster ok, and have tested failover with no problems.
However, when we try to install SQL 2000, it just hangs.
I have copied the enterprise cd to the local drive, and am installing from there.
We run the setup.bat, create the Virtual Server, and assign an ip address. At this point, it just hangs.
Upon checking the SQLSTP.LOG file, this is the last entry in the log:
Begin Action : DialogShowSdDiskGroups

I have found the Microsoft Technet Article 293788, which gives me a possible soloution, but we dont have any Resource Names or Groups that have the same name.

Can someone PLEASE give me an answer on how to fix this, or at least point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks

Darren

Problems Running Enterprise Manager And Service Manager

Jul 20, 2005

On one of our machines, all of the SQL Server 2000components except for the main Server component (SQL Servercore) itself were installed (Management tools, etc) a while agoand everything was running fine. Now I go and add/install theServer component and then Service Pack 3a.It seems that Service Manager won't start up (I get an hourglass cursor)and now I find that Enterprise Manager won't run as well. No errormessages appeared and I don't think I saw anything unusual inthe log file. However, I can use Enterprise Manager on a differentmachine and connect to the database (so the databaseitself seems to be running).Any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how tofix it? I like to see if I can repair this without havingto do a reinstall.Thanks.PF

Restore Hangs For 5 Hours?

Nov 8, 2007

Had a problem in a database and wanted to restore from disk as of 11/5/2007 (full backup). This particular database is only really updated about once a month, and changes were made on the sixth, so I thought this would be safe.

So (be kind - not an SQL guru), I ran something similar to:
RESTORE DATABASE myDatabase
FROM DISK = '\serverNamesqlbackupsmyDatabasemyDatabase_backup_200711052320.bak'
WITH NORECOVERY, STOPAT = 'Nov 05, 2007 11:21 PM'

myDatabase_backup_200711052320.bak is 42,084kb and has been running since 9:30 this morning (it's 2:20ish now). I've tried to take offline, stop/start sql services, restart server. Nothing works. It just keeps reading myDatabase (restoring).

Anybody help me out? How do I get it to stop and then do a clean restore?

Thanks so much,
Janet

I have 4 FT indexs on 4 of my tables.
They are schedules to run every day once. For the last couple of days the jobs are hanged.

When I tried to open Catalogs by clicking on 'Full Text Catalogs' enterprice manager hangs( not responding). I had to go to taskmanager and then click on end task to re-open the enterprise manager.

Also when I right click on one of the tables enabled with FT indexing
Enterprise manager hangs up again.

If I cannt open FTCatalogs how can I rebuild them.

please respond,

Restore Master When DB Location Changes - Help!

Jan 23, 2007

Our SQL Server has the databases on D drive and logfiles on the E drive. I have full database backups.

I want to move the databases over to another "standby server". However, the other server does not have an E drive. It is imperative that I be able to restore the Master database. But when I do, the SQL Server will not start, because the Master database expects the logfiles on the E drive.

Is it possible to restore Master without it being able to find what it needs on the E drive? Or in order to restore Master, does it have to find those other databases/logfiles?

I am going on the "disaster recovery" scenario. Assume that the original server has crashed, and all I have are backups. Can this be done?

Thanks....

BACKUP To Backup Device Or Disk

Sep 25, 2000

Is there any benefit in creating a backup device and using that in the backup statement over just using a disk file in the backup statement. It seems like extra work to create the backup device with sp_addumpdevice with the file location. Whereas I could just specify the file location right in the BACKUP statement by specifying DISK as the backup device.
