I'm not sure about this one so if someone could help I'd appreciate this. As shown below I've declared a variable name1 to be used in a while statement substituting for an object name in a select statement (2000 SP3a) and throwing the shown error. Are variables allowed to be used to substitute for object names or is there another problem? Thanks.

Below is my example, I have declared the cursor c1 once at the top in a stored procedure and open it many times in a loop by setting the variable @str_var to different values. It seems the variable cannot be set after the cursor declared. Using Cursor Variable As A Tablename
I am currently using a cursor to scroll through sysobjects to extract table names and then extracting relevant column names from syscolumns. I then need to run the following script: declare Detail_Cursor cursor for select @colname, max(len(@colname)) from @table The message I receive is "must declare variable @table". Immediately prior to this script I printed out the result of @table which works fine so the variable obviously is declared and populated. Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong or how I can get the same result. Thanks

Cursor Variable Problem
My code below is supposed to pull the destination and then work out 2 calculations per month on each destination. The results returns the string '@destination' instead of the value from the table and also the month value is returned completely wrong. My main problem though is the getting the correct destination to return. If anybody has any pointers I would be very grateful. This is driving me mad!! How To Iterate Through Table Variable Without Using Cursor
Hi, I need a small help. In my stored procedure, i create a table variable and fill it with records based on my query. The ID field within the table is not continous and can have any value in increasing order .e.g. The ID sequence may be like 20, 33, 34, 59, 78, 79... I want to iterate through each record within the table but without using a Cursor. I want to use a loop for this purpose. There are many articles pointing out how to iterate through records in a table variable but that requires the IDs to be continous which is not possible in my case. Variable As Column In Cursor Select
I can't seem to get a cursor to work when I'm passing in a variable for a column name of the select statement. For example: declare @col varchar(50) set @col = 'Temperature' declare notifycurs cursor scroll for select @col from Table Obviously this won't work correctly (since the result will simply be 'Temperature' instead of the actual float value for temperature). I tried to use quotes for the entire statement with an EXEC (ie. exec('select '+@col+' from Table' ) but that gave me an error. Is there a way to pass in a variable for a column name for a curor select statement????

Variable As Field Name In CURSOR FOR UPDATE
I'm trying something like: UPDATE tbl SET @varFieldName = @varValue The procedure runs, and when I PRINT @varFieldName, it looks fine, but the table isn't getting updated, and no errors, wierd. I have the CURSOR open for update, but I didn't list the field names, that shouldn't be a problem, as all fields should be updateable then. I'm trying to build a select statement for a CURSOR where part of the SQL statement is built using a variable. When I execute next query on sqlserver 6.5 nested in stored procedure I can see that 'open testCursor' selected rows using new value of @var. When I execute query on sqlserver 7.0 I can see that 'open testCursor' selected rows using value of @var before 'declare ... cursor'. Question About Assigning Cursor Variable Data Types...
Hi, I'm just curious about something...when assigning a datatype to a cursor variable in ORACLE, you can use the keyword TYPE to automatically grap the datatype from the associated column (or use ROWTYPE to create a cursor variable to represent an entire row in a table). It's so much easier and if the datatype of one of the cursor columns is altered, the associated cursor variable assumes the new datatype. Is there a way to do this in SQL Server 7.0 ? many thanks :)

Dynamic Query, Local Cursor Variable And Global Cursors
Hi all. I am stuck in a bit of a conundrum for quite a while now, and I hope someone here will help me figure this one out. So, first things first: let me explain what I need to do. I am designing a web application that will allow users to consult info available in a SQL2000 database. The user will enter the search criterea, and hopefully the web page will show matching results. The problem is the results shown aren't available per se in the DB, I need to process the data a bit. I decided to do so on the SQL Server side, though the use of cursors. So, when a user defines his search criteria, I run a stored procedure that begins by building a dynamic sql query and creating a cursor for it. I used a global cursor in order to do so. It looked something like this: SET @sqlQuery = ... (build the dinamic sql query) SET @cursorQuery = 'DECLARE myCursor CURSOR GLOBAL FAST_FORWARD FOR ' + @sqlQuery EXEC @cursorQuery OPEN myCursor FETCH NEXT FROM myCursor INTO ... CLOSE myCursor DEALLOCATE myCursor This works fine, if there's only one instance of the stored procedure running at a time. Should another user connect to the site and run a search while someone's at it, it'll fail due to the atempt to create a cursor with the same name. My first thought was to make the cursor name unique, which led me to: ... SET @cursorName = 'myCursor' + @uniqueUserID SET @cursorQuery = 'DECLARE '+ @cursorName + 'CURSOR FAST_FORWARD FOR ' + @sqlQuery EXEC @cursorQuery ... The problem with this is that I can't do a FETCH NEXT FROM @cursorName since @cursorName is a char variable holding the cursor name, and not a cursor variable. So to enforce this unique name method the only option I have is to keep creating dynamic sql queries and exucting them. And this makes the sp a bitch to develop and maintain, and I'm guessing it doesn't make it very performant. So I moved on to my second idea: local cursor variables. The problem with this is that if I create a local cursor variable by executing a dynamic query, I can't extract it from the EXEC (or sp_executesql) context, as it offers no output variable. I guess my concrete questions are: Is it possible to execute a dynamic sql query and extract a (cursor) variable from it?Is it possible to populate a local cursor variable with a global cursor, by providing the global cursor's name?Can I create a local cursor variable for a dynamic sql query? Dynamic Cursor Versus Forward Only Cursor Gives Poor Performance
Hello,I have a test database with table A containing 10,000 rows and a tableB containing 100,000 rows. Rows in B are "children" of rows in A -each row in A has 10 related rows in B (ie. NOTE: it is not a mistake that we are repeatedly doing the Aquery and retrieving only the first row.When the queries use fast-forward-only cursors this takes about 2.5minutes. When the queries use dynamic cursors this takes about 1 hour.Does anyone know why the dynamic cursor is killing performance?Because of the SQL Server ODBC driver it is not possible to havenested/multiple fast-forward-only cursors, hence I need to exploreother alternatives.I can only assume that a different query plan is getting constructedfor the dynamic cursor case versus the fast forward only cursor, but Ihave no way of finding out what that query plan is.All help appreciated.Kevin

Client Side Cursor Vs Sever Side Cursor?
I having a difficult time here trying to figure out what to do here.I need a way to scroll through a recordset and display the resultswith both forward and backward movement on a web page(PHP usingADO/COM)..I know that if I use a client side cursor all the records get shovedto the client everytime that stored procedure is executed..if thisdatabase grows big wont that be an issue?..I know that I can set up a server side cursor that will only send therecord I need to the front end but..Ive been reading around and a lot of people have been saying never touse a server side cursor because of peformance issues.So i guess im weighing network performance needs with the client sidecursor vs server performance with the server side cursor..I am reallyconfused..which one should I use?-Jim

SSIS Script Task Alters Package Variable, But Variable Does Not Change.
I'm working on an SSIS package that uses a vb.net script to grab some XML from a webservice (I'd explain why I'm not using a web service task here, but I'd just get angry), and I wish to then assign the XML string to a package variable which then gets sent along to a DataFlow Task that contains an XML Source that points at said variable. when I copy the XML string into the variable value in the script, if do a quickwatch on the variable (as in Dts.Variable("MyXML").value) it looks as though the new value has been copied to the variable, but when I step out of that task and look at the package explorer the variable is its original value. I think the problem is that the dataflow XML source has a lock on the variable and so the script task isn't affecting it. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem, or know a workaround?

Passing A SSIS Global Variable To A Declared Variable In A Query In SQL Task
I have a SQL Task that updates running totals on a record inserted using a Data Flow Task. The package runs without error, but the actual row does not calculate the running totals. I suspect that the inserted record is not committed until the package completes and the SQL Task is seeing the previous record as the current. SSIS Error Reading XML Loaded Into Variable With XML Source Using XML File From Variable.
Hi I am getting the following error when trying to extract data using XML source " Error: 0xC02090D0 at Data Flow Task - Load XML data to database, XML Source - Load XML data from variable [15893]: The component "XML Source - Load XML data from variable" (15893) was unable to read the XML data." What I have done is read XML data from file and stripped out DTD contents using XSLT transformation in an XML task. The XML file is loaded into a string variable called XMLProduct. Next I have a XML task to validate the variable contents against the XSD, which works. Then I am trying to load the data using XML Source within a Data Flow task, which is when the error occurs. If before I enter the Data Flow and use a script task to read the content of XMLProduct variable and save that to a file then point XML Source task to the file it works ok. I need to iterate through a whole bunch of XML files so reading it into a variable would be the preferred option if it worked of course. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Edit --- I have saved the output from the XSLT transformation XML Task to file and not a variable then read that in using the XML source task and it worked. It would be nice to get the variable method working though as it would save having to create another file. It is a work around at the moment though.

SSIS: Problem Mapping Global Variables To Stored Procedure. Can't Pass One Variable To Sp And Return Another Variable From Sp.
I'm new to SSIS, but have been programming in SQL and ASP.Net for several years. In Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition I've created an SSIS that imports data from a flat file into the database. The original process worked, but did not check the creation date of the import file. I've been asked to add logic that will check that date and verify that it's more recent than a value stored in the database before the import process executes. Here are the task steps. [Execute SQL Task] - Run a stored procedure that checks to see if the import is running. If so, stop execution. Otherwise, proceed to the next step. [Execute SQL Task] - Log an entry to a table indicating that the import has started. [Script Task] - Get the create date for the current flat file via the reference provided in the file connection manager. Assign that date to a global value (FileCreateDate) and pass it to the next step. This works. [Execute SQL Task] - Compare this file date with the last file create date in the database. This is where the process breaks. This step depends on 2 variables defined at a global level. The first is FileCreateDate, which gets set in step 3. The second is a global variable named IsNewFile. That variable needs to be set in this step based on what the stored procedure this step calls finds out on the database. Precedence constraints direct behavior to the next proper node according to the TRUE/FALSE setting of IsNewFile. If IsNewFile is FALSE, direct the process to a step that enters a log entry to a table and conclude execution of the SSIS. If IsNewFile is TRUE, proceed with the import. There are 5 other subsequent steps that follow this decision, but since those work they are not relevant to this post. Here is the stored procedure that Step 4 is calling. You can see that I experimented with using and not using the OUTPUT option. I really don't care if it returns the value as an OUTPUT or as a field in a recordset. All I care about is getting that value back from the stored procedure so this node in the decision tree can point the flow in the correct direction. This would seem to be a very common task. My suspicion is that one or more of the settings in that Execute SQL Task node is bad. Compare The Value Of A Variable With Previous Variable From A Function ,reset The Counter When Val Changes
I am in the middle of taking course 2073B €“ Programming a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database. I noticed that in Module9: Implementing User-Defined Functions exercise 2, page 25; step 2 is not returning the correct answer. Select employeeid,name,title,mgremployeeid from dbo.fn_findreports(2) It returns manager id for both 2 and 5 and I think it should just return the results only for manager id 2. The query results for step 1 is correct but not for step 2. Somewhere in the code I think it should compare the inemployeeid with the previous inemployeeid, and then add a counter. If the two inemployeeid are not the same then reset the counter. Then maybe add an if statement or a case statement. Can you help with the logic? Thanks! Foreach From Variable Using 2 Dim Array Variable
Is there any way to use a 2 dimensional array of strings as the Variable Enumerator for the "Foreach From Variable Enumerator". I am trying to copy a collection of files from folder A to folder B. In a script, I would populate, let us say, an array of (2,10), for 10 files, with one column representing the source file and other column representing the target column task. Then I would like to set this string array variable as the "Variable Enumerator" for the "Foreach From Variable Enumerator" and use file system tasks in the foreach loop to perform the tasks. The problem is that the "Foreach From Variable Enumerator" does not let me choose an index, but passes only one index 0, so, I will only be able to pass just one column. How do I let the foreach enumerator let me choose an index. The other foreach enumerators, foreach item and ADO give me the option to select index. I would like the same functionality in the foreach variable. Note: I cannot use the "For Each File" enumerator, since the files are to be selected by a script only. Thanks for the help.

SQL Variable And IS Variable In Execute SQL Task
Hi, I have an Execute SQL Task (OLE DB Connnection Manager) with a SQL script in it. In this script I use several SQL variables (@my_variable). I would like to assign an IS variable ([User::My_Variable]) to one of my SQL variables on this script. Example: DECLARE @my_variable int , <several_others> SET @my_variable = ? <do_some_stuff> Of course, I also set up the parameter mapping. However, it seems this is not possible. Assigning a variable using a ? only seems to work in simple T-SQL statements. I have several reasons for wanting to do this: - the script uses several variables, several times. Not all SQL variables are assigned via IS variables. - For reading and mainenance purposes, I prefer to pass the variable only once. Otherwise every time the script changes u need to keep track of all questionmarks and their order. - Passing the variable once also makes it easier to design the script outside IS using Management Studio. - This script only does preparation for the actual ETL, so I prefer to keep it in one task instead of taking it apart to several consecutive Execute SQL Tasks. - I prefer to use the OLE DB connection manager because it's a de facto standard here. Passing Variable Value Through Environment Variable
Hi All! I have a parent package that contains two children... The second child depends on the succes of the first child. THe first child generates a variable value and stores it in an Environment variable ( Visibility - All ) ...After the first succeeds, the second will start executing and will pick up the variable value from environment variable( through package configuration setting )... Unfortunately, this doesn't work...As the second child picks the stale value of the environment variables...Essentially it assigns variable value not after the first child is finished, but right at the beginning of parent execution... I tried to execute coth children as Out Of Proc as well as In Proc...The same Would anybody have an idea how to resolve this problem? Thanks in advance for any help! Vladimir
