Extracting Sentences From Memo Fields Containing Specific Strings

I have an access database and am currenlty using classic asp for most of my coding and am trying to extract sentences from the memo field that contain specific strings, in this case "<b>"

The memo fields contain a lot of data so filtering becomes an issue, so i just want to be able to only display the sentences within the memo field i.e. between "." and "." OR beginning of record and "." OR "." and end of record that contain the string "<b>"

Memo Fields

I have built a search feature for a site which searches 4 fields,2 in one table and 2 in another. It's an Access database. It works a treat when searching for anything except something like "I'd", or "it's" etc.Anything with a hyphen in returns one result,or less than there in fact are.

My SQL statement is as follows:

strSQL = "select id as strID, tableID as strTableID, tagline as strTagline, content AS strContact FROM news where tagline LIKE '%" & searchString & "%' OR content LIKE '% " & searchString & "%' UNION ALL select id as strID, tableID as strTableID, tagline AS strTagline, content AS strContent from databank where tagline LIKE '%" & searchString & "%' OR content LIKE '%" & searchString & "%' ORDER BY strID"

ACCESS Memo Fields

I need to be able to retieve variable length (>255 characters) messages which have been saved in a memo field in an access data base on the server. I am using the following code to test this : -

<%
set objconn = server.createobject ("ADODB.connection")
set objrec = server.createobject ("ADODB.recordset")
objconn.open "DSN=daters"
strsql = "SELECT DISTINCT messages.* FROM messages WHERE messid = 305 ;"
objrec.open strsql, objconn, adopenforwardonly, adlockoptimistic,adcmdtext
%>

<%=objrec("text")%>

The message is found and retrieved but truncated to 255 characters as if it were an ACCESS text field not a memo field.

The message which is originally user created on another page, writes in full to the ACCESS memo field. Also, if I download the data, and retrieve the message offline via an ACCESS form, it displays fully. Seems then like an ADO issue in retrieving memo fields Probably my syntax?

Struggling With Displaying Memo Fields In Textarea

I'm using an Access database and asp to bring in a series of table contents to textarea fields so if wording wants changing in the database I can do it using an asp form. All works ok apart from a couple of records that are memo fields.

I have displayed the field contents by ..........

<%=(locationwords.Fields.Item("ftexta").Value)%>

and they are shown ok.

If i try and use the same syntax for bringing the memo field in to a textarea nothing is displayed.

<textarea name="textarea" cols="50" rows="2"><%=(locationwords.Fields.Item("ftexta").Value)%></textarea>

Any clues as to what i'm missing to get the text to appear so it can be modified and posted using a form.

Searching Multiple Memo Fields In Multiple Tables In Access

I have a search option on my website, which should perform a search on 4 fields, as follows:

tblNews
headline
content

tblDatabank
filename
description

It only needs to return matches which are an exact match of their search criteria. For instance, searching for "I am here" would return a record which contained "I am here", but not just "I" or "I am" etc.

I need to return all these records as part of one recordset preferably, as I want to be able to order them etc., though I imagine you may suggest I use an array somehow to merge two recordets etc., then reorder them?

Splitting Arrays With Sentences

I have an array I want to split. This is the code I am currently using:Code:

<%
dim aSelected
aSelected = split(request.form("option"),",")
for i = 0 to ubound(aSelected)
response.write (aSelected(i) & ("<br>"))
next
%>

This splits the array no problem. The problem I have is that the different variables (if thats the word to use?) the array is holding is sentences that contain commas in themselves. So the split is splitting my sentences. How can I split the variables at the end of the sentences. (some sentences have periods some don't so I can't use the ".").

Extracting Data From A Document

Not a problem with my code, but something I would like to add, (ASP
VBScript) at the moment I have a form where a user uploads their details
including a document (Doc, PDF, TXT, Docx) The document is uploaded to a
folder on the server with the address being stored in the database and I'm
tracking the user id through sessions.

What I would like to do after the upload is redirect to a blank page, where
some script extracts the data from the document and inserts it into another
field on the database associated with the user id, I think this may be called
parsing, but I'm at a complete loss, I don't suppose you guys have any ideas

Extracting Part Of A String

we have a database with a lot of products in it. and for some reason one fo the feilds is set up like "<img src="images/something/image.jpg" />". they should be set up without the html but because of the way they are set up theres no way i can use them outside of the root directory.

I need a way to just pull the first 10 characters off the string. which would be the <img src=" part, and then pull off the last 4 characters " />. so that i am just left with images/something/image.jpg.

I can sort of get the first part to work by using Mid(string,10)

but how can i remove the last 4 characters?

in php the function would do the ending characters if you made it a negative number. but Mid(Mid(string,10),-4) doesnt seem to work.

Extracting Text From Remote Site

I'd like to do the above, ideally in javascript but i'm aware of the security restrictions with accessing the DOM of a file not hosted on the same server - however i'm not looking to manipluate anything on the remote site, or handle any events (such as keylogging!). All i want is to have a piece of text on the remote site dupicated on my own site.

I'm happy to receive the html as a whole and split it up to get what i want, but i'm beginning to think the way forward is doing it server-side with asp.
Anyone know the best way to do this?

OR am i just being silly and there is a way to copy the contents of a remote page into my own page in javascript, split it up and only display what i need.

(btw im quite happy with the splitting up bit, no help needed there - i just need the blasted text in the first place!)
