Count Number Of 7s (User Input) - Illegal Start Of Expression
Oct 15, 2014
I'm attempting to create a program that employs a method to count the number of 7s a user puts as an input into the program. I'm just getting started, but I'm getting an error when I try to implement a main method that says "Illegal start of expression"
What adjustments could I make to eliminate this error message?
// Add a main method here.
public static void main(String[] args) {
//Error occurs here
public static int countSevens(int n) {
// 0. Clean-up. Get rid of any minus signs as that is not a digit.
n = Math.abs(n);
I am getting the error "Line 54, illegal start of expression". Line 54 is where my "for" starts. It was running ok earlier, now I can't get this error to go away?
Lines 7 , 10 ,13 .... All have a Illegal Start of Expression error.
[color=blue]private void jButton1ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) { Random rd = new Random(); int random = 0; random=rd.nextInt(6)+1; switch(random){
why the complier is giving the following error message "illegal start of expression" once it reach the countSpaces method.The way I see it (and I am obviously seeing it wrong), the code is public since why not, int since it returns an int # and the method has return int in it, and static I am not too sure but I get the same error message whether or not it is included
public static void main (String args[]) { Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in); String sentence; System.out.println("type a sentence"); sentence = in.nextLine(); countSpaces (sentence);
Why does this not work? I get an ']' expected at the y in the fourth line of code and an illegal start of an expression at the actual ] in the same line
int y = 0; JTextField response[] = new JTextField[10]; while(y < 10) { JTextField response[y] = new JTextField(7); add(response[y]); response[y].addItemListener(this); ++y; }
Here is my program and results and I am having a error on line 38 which is "public static long fib01(long paramLong)" The program does give me my results but I am trying to correct there error.
public static void main(String[] args) { { System.out.print("
" + String.format("%-10s", new Object[] { "Index" })); System.out.print(String.format("%-15s", new Object[] { "Fibonacci01" })); System.out.print(String.format("%-15s", new Object[] { "Fibonacci02" })); System.out.println(String.format("%-15s", new Object[] { "Fibonacci01" }));
I'm working on a program and can't seem to fix my for loop error.I get an error at the for loop line saying illegal start of expression and i don't know how to fix it:

I need to know why this program is giving me error (illegal start of expression). What must i do to stop the error?
//Read a character from keyboard class Kbin{ public static void main(String[]args){ throws java.io.IOException{ char ch;
System.out.print( " Press a key followed by ENTER: "); ch = (char) System.in.read();//read character from keyboard System.out.println( "Your key is: " + ch); } } }
public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner Keyboard = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("Please enter your name."); String name = Keyboard.next(); name = "name";
I'm working through Head First Java, and I'm struggling with the chapter 6 magnet exercise on page 161. I've checked my answer countless times, and it appears to match the book's code, but when I try to run it on my computer I'm getting an error. It says:
error: <identifier> expected System.out.println^(" "); and
error: illegal start of type System.out.println(^" ");, both for line 32.
I cannot seem to figure out what is different about my code!!
import java.util.*;
public class ArrayListMagnet { public static void main (String [] args) { ArrayList<String> a = new ArrayList<String>(); a.add (0, "zero"); a.add(1, "one"); a.add(2, "two"); a.add(3, "three");
[Code] .....
Also, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the above errors, but I'm getting a third error message for line 34 saying:
I'm creating a small program to count the number of mouse clicks the user is inputting into a BlankArea for a school assignment. I just finished with making the program look nice and all so I was putting in a MouseListener to detect the clicks. However, when I tried adding a MouseListener to the code, the error in the title appeared.
Java Code:
import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.border.*; import java.awt.event.*; public class CountClick { JTextArea textArea = new JTextArea();
[Code] ....
Here's what's going on:
Compiling causes error as described in Title Java Code: createAndShowGUI() mh_sh_highlight_all('java'); cannot be referenced from a static context appears Java Code: public static void main(String [] args) mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
It contains the thread safe and program previously launched without mouse functionality(program appeared when there were no MouseListener components and thread safe had all static method stuff).
I have been struggling with this program for weeks. This program is supposed to take a user's inputted odd number and then print out all prime numbers lower than that number.
public class PrimeNumber { Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in); int userNum; String neg;
I'm trying to get a timer to work to decrease the value of a stats bar (like Hunger Level, Energy Level), but it won't paint the bars in the first place, it won't let me start the timer (the start after t.start() is underlined) and now I'm getting an error that won't let me run it at all without putting public static void main (String [] args), even though adding it anywhere is causing other errors
public void hungerTimer () { int delay = 300; int period = 300; interval = 100; hungerBar.setValue(100); hungerBar.repaint(); timer = new Timer();
String temp = "hi this sf hello is new what is this"; String[] cmd = temp.split("s"); int num = cmd.length; System.out.println("number of words are: "+num); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
However, when i get the input from user , i didnt get the expected result:
Java Code:
System.out.println("Enter the input string to count the words: "); String[] cmd = new Scanner(System.in).next().trim().split("s"); int num = cmd.length; System.out.println("number of words are: "+num); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
Any better way to write a program that takes a user number input and the program determines whether or not the number is prime or not. It was suppose to be a number between 0 and 8,000,000.
import java.util.Scanner; public class prime1 { public static void main(String args [])
Write a program that detects Fibonacci numbers. Prompt the user to input a positive integer. Upon input, the program will determine if the number is either a Fibonacci number or not. If a Fibonacci number, then the order of the number in the sequence must be output. If not a Fibonacci number, then the Fibonacci numbers above and below it (including their order in the sequence) must be output. Once it finishes, the program will prompt the user for a new number. The program will exit if the user enters a string (such as “quit”) instead of an integer. Use the sample output file, fib-seq-det.txt, to view a sample session
This is my project, I wrote a programs that tells you if the input number is a fibonacci number or not. For some reason it only works for some Fibonacci numbers but not all of them.
import java.util.Scanner; public class While { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Welcome to the Fibonacci Sequence Detector "); Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print("Please input a number for analysis: "); int input = in.nextInt();
import java.util.*; public class SumOfAllEvens { public static void main (String[] args) { Scanner s = new Scanner (System.in); //for (int i=1; i<4; i++){ int usernumber;
[code]....
I'm supposed to use a for loop that runs until it reaches the number input by the user, but I'm not sure how to tell the program to add the user's number along with all of the even numbers in between the user input and 2.
/* * To change this template, choose Tools | Templates * and open the template in the editor. */
package firstgui; import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.*; public class TicTacToe {
[Code] ......
Program is 10x10 board, I need to check if the user's input is a duplicate of any number in that same column, but I can't figure it out. When I tried it, it always check the same box. For example, if I entered 4 in [1][1] (going by 10x10 grid), it automatically checks right after I entered that [1][1] is the same as my input and erases it. My professor wants me to check it with the "CheckWinner" method.
I tried the following when someone told me to pass the reference of the JButton being clicked to ignore it.
I need the user to be able to input a number, and for the program to assign this value to an 'int' variable. I know how to do this with a 'string' variable:
Java Code:
String options = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null, "In your decision, how many options do you have? " +" (NOTE: The maximum number of options = 5, and you must enter your answer as a numeral.)"); mh_sh_highlight_all('java');
But I need to know how to do this with an 'int' variable.
