A Lot Of Locks In SQL SERVER 2005 Using OLEDB Connection

May 28, 2008

hello,

I have an application wrote in Power Builder 11 and use OLEDB connection for SQL SERVER 2005 DB.
it works excellent till multiple users access the application. 2 seconds passes and locks appears and blocks all the DB!
I realy don't know what is the reason. In past I used SQL Native driver and it works well with the same application!!! (other reasons caused me to change the connection. not this).
Does someone can help me????????

OLEDB Source Table Locks?

Sep 15, 2006

Hi All,

Is it possible that an OLEDB Data Flow Source is imposing locks on the source tables? The source is an SQL Server OLTP environment, and although the package will be scheduled to run nightly when the application sees little to no use, I want to be sure that the process isn't impacting any application functions.

Thanks for the advice!

SQL Server 2008 :: Row Locks Not Escalating To Table Locks After 5000

Jul 16, 2015

I've got an INSERT that's selecting data from a linked server and attempting to push 10 million rows into the blank table. More or less, it looks like this:

insert into ReceivingTable (
Field1, Field2, Field3, Field4
, Field5, Field6, Field7, Field8
, Field9, Field10, Field11, Field12
, Field13, Field14, Field15

[code]...

The instance of the SQL Server Database Engine cannot obtain a LOCK resource at this time. Rerun your statement when there are fewer active users. Ask the database administrator to check the lock and memory configuration for this instance, or to check for long-running transactions. There are no other active users. I ran it again and monitored the following DMO to watch the growth of locks for that spid:

SELECT request_session_id, COUNT (*) num_locks
-- select *
FROM sys.dm_tran_locks
--where request_session_id = 77
GROUP BY request_session_id
ORDER BY count (*) DESC

The number of locks started small and held for a while around 4-7 locks, but at about 5 minutes in the number of locks held by that spid grew dramatically to more than 8 million before finally erroring again with the same message. Researching, I can't figure out why it's not escalating from row locks to table locks at the appropriate threshold. The threshold in was set to 0 at first (Server Properties > Advanced > Parallelism > Locks). I set it to 5000, and it still didn't seem to work. Rewriting the INSERT to include a WITH (TABLOCK) allows it to finish successfully in testing. My problem is that it's coming out of an ETL with source code that I can't edit. I need to figure out how to force it to escalate to locking the entire table via table or server level settings.

A colleague suggested that installing service packs may take care of it (the client is running SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM)), but I haven't found anything online to support that theory.

OLEDB Connection To 32-bit Or 64-bit SQL Server 2000

Apr 16, 2008

An application vendor is telling me that their product will not run with SQL Server 2000 64-bit. Here is the layout:
* Dedicated 64-bit machine running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, 64-bit.
* Separate application server running Windows Server 2003 - SBS.
Application server uses DCOM and OLEDB to obtain data from SQL Server.

My question: Is there any way for the application server to know if the data supplier is running 32-bit or 64-bit?
If so, then perhaps the application vendor is right.
If not, then they are just trying to put me off and avoid fixing a problem. In this case, I need an authoritative statement as ammunition to take back to their support department.

OLEDB Connection Error With (win 64 Bit Server)

Jun 26, 2006

Hi

Im trying to connecting from SQL 2005 (win 64bit server) to a Oracle database via OLEDB but get the following message. The OraOLEDB.Oracle.1 provider is not registered on the local machine.

If we try ODBC we get the following message "error in initializing provider. Attemt to load Oracle client libraries threw BadImageFormatException. This problem will occur when running in 64bit mode whit the 32 bit Oracle Client components installed."

It should be the 64 bit client that is installed.

In the test environment (32 bit win) both works.

Pleas help

SQL Server Stopping While Configuring OLEDB Connection

Jan 23, 2007

When I configure and test and OLEDB connection SQL Server 2005 keeps stopping with an error message as shown below. The problem seems to happen when I open the connection for ediing in Data Flow Window. There is a consistent pattern of errors (in there Event Log) relating to the Evnet Log prior to this error occurring.

Any idea what the problem is?

I have to say that my experience with SSIS has not been very encouraging so far.

Failed OLEDB Connection: Cannot Aquire Connection From Connection Manager

Feb 6, 2008

I have a package that uses a for loop to iterate through an unknown amount of excel files and pull their data into a table. However, there will be cases when the file is corrupted or has some sort of problem so that either the transformation will fail or the excel data source will fail with an oledb connection error.
Could anyone suggest a clean way to trap these errors? Specifically, the "Cannot Aquire Connection from Connection Manager", which is the excel connection.

Thanks,

Sql Server 2005 Queries Start Timing Out Because Sa Is Acquriing And Releasing Locks

Oct 23, 2007

I have a co-worker whose sql server 2005 is exhibiting strange behavior. We have already re-installed sql server 2005 and service packed it to SP2 to try and see if the behavior stops but it has not.

Every so often during the day sql server 2005 will start to slow down to the point that my co-worker's queries begin to time out. He turned on profiler to look at what was going on behind the scenes.

We see where sa is releasing and acquring locks to the tune of 180,000 rows in a fifteen minute span when this behavior starts so does his time outs. He has reporting options and analysis services installed but not configured. His only connection is to his local database. Occasionally, you see a number like - (03000d8f0ecc) appear in the Text Data column in profiler for sa. I read something about reporting options using sa for clean up but I don't think that is what is happening here.

Does someone have a clue as to what is happening and a way we can prevent the behavior? It is affecting his ability to work on his application.

Thx

(Project Real Implementation) Error Code: 0x80004005 OLEDB Connection To SQL Server

Mar 25, 2008

Hi List
Im trying to set up an implementation of Project Real --it works like this-
Create two system environment variables called REAL_Root_Dir and
REAL_Configuration with the values given below. Click on
Start -> Control Panel -> System. Go to the Advanced Panel, click Environment Variables button, then New in the System variables box.

If the Project REAL files were installed at C:Microsoft Project REAL, then the variable values will be:

Variable Name: REAL_Root_Dir
Variable Value: C:Microsoft Project REALETL

Variable Name: REAL_Configuration
Variable Value: %REAL_Root_Dir%REAL_Config.dtsconfig

The package OLEDB connections work like this
First read enviroment variable to get location of config file
Next read Config File to get connection string for Config Database
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<DTSConfiguration>
<Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Connections[SQL - Configuration].Properties[ConnectionString]" ValueType="String">
<ConfiguredValue>Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=DataWarehouseABC;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
</DTSConfiguration>
Next read Config database to get connection strings for Source and Destination databases

Destination database is called "DataWarehouseABC"
Source database is called "SnapshotABC"

the Source database OLEDB connection works 100%
however the destination OLDB connection we get this error below
PS--Both source and destination databases are on the same development machine , however both databases are restored bak files from another production machine

Error 1 Error loading LoadGroup_Daily.dtsx: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Any ideas on how one OLEDB Connection in this package can get this corruption

The OLEDB Connection Manager used for the destination is configured to use SQL Server Authentication for the user €˜sa€™. The package works fine without enabling the configurations. But when I enable package configuration and save the configuration of the various connection managers in an XML configuration file and then run the package it gives the following error in the validation phase:

And after the validation phase is complete the following error message is given for the package execution:

Copying Table Data From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000 - Very Slow When Using OLEDB Source And Destination Sources?

May 8, 2006

An SSIS package to transfer data from a DB instance on SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 is extremely slow. The package uses an OLEDB Source to OLEDB Destination for data transfer which is basically one table from sql server 2005 to sql server 2000. The job takes 5 minutes to transfer about 400 rows at night when there is very little activity on the server. During the day the job almost always times out.

On SQL Server 200 instances the job ran in minutes in the old 2000 package.

Is there an alternative to this. Tranfer Objects task does not work as there is apparently a defect according to Microsoft. Please let me know if there is any other option other than using a Execute 2000 package task or using an ActiveX Script to read records from one source and to insert them into the destination source, which I am not certain how long it might take and how viable will that be?

Any inputs will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

MShah

Transact SQL :: How To List All Locks (including NON-BLOCKING Locks)

Aug 5, 2015

We are migrating our database(s) from ORACLE to SQL. In Oracle we were able to issue a SELECT statement and see all of the locks (Blocking and Non-Blocking) currently in the system.  The query also included the Process ID of the process we needed to kill in order to get rid of the lock.

We now need to create the same type of query for Microsoft SQL Server 2012. I have seen postings on different sites saying that this info can be obtained using SP_WHO2 or using the SQL Server Management Studio Activity Monitor's PROCESSES tab, but we are looking for a SELECT statement that will give us similar information.

SQL Server 2005 X64 SP2 Conflict With Teradata Oledb? (class Not Registered)

Jul 23, 2007

SP2 for SQL Server 2005 x64 has been less than happy for me.

The initial problem, mentioned in another thread, concerned SSIS client which stopped liking Data Flow components. It was solved by a removal and reinstallation of the client tools.

However, there now seems to be a problem with making use of the Teradata oledb provider within SSIS. Prior to the installation of SP2 there was no problem.

I create a new SSIS package
Add a Data Flow component
Within the data flow add an oledb source
Create a new connection - using the Teradata oledb provider
Test the connection (it works!)
Use SQL something like "select * from some_teradata_table_on_the_TD_server"
Click on columns, wait a second, a list of columns is returned
Add a SQL Server destination (with a new SQL Server connection)
Connect the two components
Save the package

Click go
The TD oledb source component turns bright red and the error is "class not registered"

I have uninstalled the TD oledb provider (and underlying TD components) and re-installed (32-bit and 64-bit) - no change

Any ideas?

ADO.NET Or OLEDB Connection/recordset?

Aug 9, 2007

My package needs to be a High Performance (target: 150,000 rows in 30 minutes) ETL solution. We are using all MS technologies - SSIS, SQL 2005, BIDS, etc. I need to loop the recordset executed by a Stored Proc in a Execute SQL Task in a Source Script Component.

If I use an ADO.NET Connection Manager, here is the code in the Source Script Component Public Overrides Sub CreateNewOutputRows()

Code 1

Dim sqlAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter

Dim dataRow As Data.DataRow

Dim ds As DataSet = CType(Me.Variables.rsSomeResultset, DataSet)

sqlAdapter.Fill(ds)

Iget: Error: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Object' to type 'System.Data.DataSet'.

Code 2

Dim oledbAdapter As New OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter
Dim dataTable As DataTable

oledbAdapter.Fill(dataTable, Me.Variables.rsSomeResultset)

Error: System.ArgumentException: Object is not an ADODB.RecordSet or an ADODB.Record. Parameter name: adodb

It works all right when I use an OLEDB Connection Manager with the second code sample.

Question: In order to extract the maximum performance, wouldn't it be preferred to use ADO.NET with SqlClient Provider in an all SQL Server 2005 environment? Or will an OLEDB Connection provide comparable or equal performance?

If so, what code can I use? Since the recordset returned by the Stored Proc (in the Execute SQL Task) can only be captured in a System.Object variable and you can only use the overload of the Fill() method of the OleDbDataAdapter to accept an ADO Recordset or Record object.

Cannot Make OLEDB Connection To .dbf

Jan 7, 2008

Hi there,

I know this has been a topic of discussion before and I have read and tried the suggestions to no avail. I have a few .dbf files to import into my sql database and I know that one needs to make a oledb connection to these files.

I am using the Jet provider and have tried setting the extended properties to all of the DBASE versions and still cannot get it to connect. These files' names are shorter than 8 chars so that issue is no problem in this case.
I can actually get these files to show in a Microsoft Access 2008 database when I import it from there so I know that I must be missing something in my SSIS project.

After doing some reading on this topic, it would seem that this shouldn't be such a schlepp but, here I am

Maybe I need to install some driver or somethin?

Db2 Connection Problems SSIS (OLEDB)

Mar 21, 2006

Hello,

I'm trying to connect to a DB2 database via SSIS and I'm getting some problems:

I'm creating a new OLE DB Connection Manager and I'm getting two distinct errors:

1) When I try to use "IBM OLEDB Provider for DB2 Servers" I can create the connection manager and the connection is tested successfully.

But when I try to use the connection in OLE DB Source when I will list the tables I get this error:

Could not retrieve the table information for the connection manager 'MyDataSource'.
truncated. SQLSTATE=01004
CLI0002W Data truncated. SQLSTATE=01004

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

truncated. SQLSTATE=01004
CLI0002W Data truncated. SQLSTATE=01004 (IBM OLE DB Provider for DB2 Servers)

2) When I try to use "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2" when I try to test the connection I get this error:

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. The parameter is incorrect.

Anyone had these problems ?

Thanks,

Guber

Connection Strings, Trusted-connection VS Username-password, SQL Server 2005 Express

Mar 9, 2007

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.

BACKGROUND...

Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.

QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?

Please advise.
Thank you.

Setting The OLEDB Connection Properties At Runtime

Jan 30, 2007

I used to do this in DTS but wondered how to do it in SSIS. I have a For Each ADO recordset loop that reads these four columns into variables:

DataSource Name, Name(for a WHERE clause), user and password.

For each "Building" there is a new server to connect to, with identical tables. I have 10 tables in the loop to pump from one database to a SQL 2005 database (i.e. 10 dataflows). I want to set the source connection information with the variables. My questions:

1. How do I set the connection information for the source connections? Do I just set the properties for the connection manager and then it sets for all the sources? What property do I set--do I need a script task?

2. How do I use the values from the "Name" column in a WHERE clause in each data flow?

Thanks!

select * from (SELECT ORDER_ID, OPER_KEY, STEP_KEY, SUM(OCCUR_COUNT) AS OCCUR_COUNT FROM SFWID_OPER_DESC_EXPLD GROUP BY ORDER_ID, OPER_KEY, STEP_KEY) refTable where refTable.ORDER_ID = ? and refTable.OPER_KEY = ? and refTable.STEP_KEY = ?

then it doesn't allow me to add the parameters from Advance tab of Lookup transformation edition, and raises following error

"Provider cannot derive parameter information and SetParametInfo has not been called"

what am I missing?

OleDB Connection Class In Custom Task?

Jun 9, 2006

I have OLE DB Connections set up in my connection manager (Native OLE DBMicrosoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server). I would like to reference and query these connections from a custom task, written in C#. I currently reference it as follows:

using System.Data.OleDb;

...................................

OleDbConnection connection = (OleDbConnection) connections["MyConnection"].AcquireConnection(null);

What may be obvious to some (though wasn't to me, as I am new at this), when I run the task, I get an error saying that I cannot make this cast. After perusing the boards, I understand that this is because I am not making a cast to the right connection type. Well, that is where I am lost. What connection type (and corresponding library) do I need to reference? I want to continue to use the "Native OLE DB..." connection.

Thanks!

Setting OLEDB Connection String With Variables

Feb 1, 2007

I am trying to set the connection string in a connection manager at runtime. Here is what I have done:

1. Created a gv_DataSource, gv_Username and gv_Password

2. Created a ForEach Loop that reads DataSource, Username and password values from a variable (it is an For Each ADO loop Enumerator). The ADO recordset is read into by an Execute SQL task before the loop.

3. Mapped values from the recordset to variable in the ForEach loop's "Variable Mappings" page.

4. Used the variables in my Sybase OLEDB Connection Manager's "Expression" property, setting the "ConnectionString" property to:

"Data Source=" + @[User::gv_DataSource] + ";User ID=" + @[User::gv_Username] + " ;Password=" +
@[User::gv_Password] + ";Initial Catalog=blue;Provider=Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider.2;Persist Security Info=True;"

5. I set the values in my database table for the connection-I set 2 connections for which I have Sybase OLEDB datasources setup.

When I run the package, I just get the first server's data twice, it doesn't set the second server's data during the second loop. I made sure the first one was working (i.e. the ConnectionString's property was being set by the data from the current variables) by setting the variables incorrectly in the variable properties page, and then running the package. So the first row of connection information is working, but the second loop around it doesn't seem to be working. I used a msgbox in a script task to show that the variables are mapping correctly in the loop, so it seems the second time around the connection information isn't taking from the variables.

What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks,

Kayda
