Allow User To See Table Definition

May 8, 2008

I have set up a couple of views for a user but they want to be able to see the database table columns by doing right click on table and getting the columsn.

I tried to give the permissions to database by right clicking on database and doing the user and giving view defintion.

-- [TABLEA] contains no columns that can be inserted or the current user does not have permissions on that object.

User not allowed to select the data .

Minimum Set Of Permissions And User Rights To Execute A Report Definition

Jan 28, 2008

To use Reporting Services as a rendering engine I want to configure a local user on the server that has only the minimum set of permissions and user rights. The server is W2K3 SP2 and SQL 9.0.3200.

In particular, this local user has been removed from the local "Users" group and so is the "Authenticated Users" built-in group. In Reporting Services, it is mapped to a role that only has the "Execute Report Definitions" task permission.

Then, following the details in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812614/ (Default permissions and user rights for IIS 6.0) I added all file security and local user rights required for "Users" and also granted and propagated "Read&Execute" on the "Reporting Services" folder and verified this using "Effective Permissions" on the ReportService2005.asmx file.

However, I still get 401 Unauthorized, also after a complete restart of all related machines and services.

Once I add the user or "Authenticated Users" back to "Users" everything works fine.

What permissions might I be missing? Where could I find those permission requirements documented?

I tried analyzing the 401 using auditing file and object access security but to no avail. There are no Failure audit entries in the Security log.

How can I investigate the minimum permission set?

What is the risk of leaving the user in the "Users" local group?

Any help appreciated.

Column Name Or Number Of Supplied Values Does Not Match Table Definition When Trying To Populate Temp Table

Jun 6, 2005

Hello,

I am receiving the following error:

Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition

I am trying to insert values into a temp table, using values from the table I copied the structure from, like this:

SELECT TOP 1 * INTO #tbl_User_Temp FROM tbl_User
TRUNCATE TABLE #tbl_User_Temp

INSERT INTO #tbl_User_Temp EXECUTE UserPersist_GetUserByCriteria @Gender = 'Male', @Culture = 'en-GB'

The SP UserPersist_GetByCriteria does a
"SELECT * FROM tbl_User WHERE gender = @Gender AND culture = @Culture",
so why am I receiving this error when both tables have the same
structure?

The error is being reported as coming from UserPersist_GetByCriteria on the "SELECT * FROM tbl_User" line.

Thanks,
Greg.

Altering Table Definition On A Linked Server Table.

Aug 11, 2000

SQL Server 7.0 (SP1)
Error:

A column was deleted from the a table on the linked server and now this message appears when using the linked server definition to access the table. Deleting/Recreating the Linked Server has no effect. I found an earlier note on this...but it just kind of ended with no resolution. Anyone have any thoughts on this now.

Thanks for any input.

Best Practices: Table Definition Updates

Feb 5, 2008

Hi. We're using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for maintaining a relational DB for our soon-to-be released .NET app. The problem is that we expect that the definitions of the tables in the DB to occasionally change over time as we make updates to the software. Thus, during the installation of a software upgrade, we expect to run an SQL script that grabs the data from a table in its "old" format, re-structures the table, and then deposits the data back in the updated table. This seems to require some sort of version stamp on the table definition.

My main question is: What is the conventional way for handling versioning of table definitions?

Another question is: Is there a preferred procedure for handling the updating of the data during the installation of a software update?

Thanks.

and T6.dtef1s <= getdate() and T6.datxxx > getdate()

Also Please suggest me some links where i can get info about the indexes that has to be created on these types of queries where joins are involved on these many tables.
Also throw some light on how to analyse the execution plan for further enhancements.

Thanks in advance

Sql 2005 Updating Table Definition With 'large' Amounts Of Data - Timeout

Feb 4, 2006

I'm trying to move my current use of an sql 2000 db to sql 2005.

I need to update a table definition (to change a field to an Identity)

I'm getting a dialog box (in SQL server management studio) on save saying :

'xxxx' table

- Saving Definition Changes to tables with large amounts of data could
take a considerable amount of time. While changes are being
saved, table data will not be accessible.

I press 'Yes' to the dialog box.

After 35 seconds, I get another dialog box saying:

'xxxx' table

- Unable to modify table.

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

Well, the server is responding and I can query that talbe and other, I
can add/delete rows to other columns. I can modify other
(smaller) tables.

Any ideas where I can change this timeout?

Uploading Column Definitions From The Flat File Connection Manager Editor Into A Table Definition

Apr 3, 2008

Hi,

Is there a way of uploading column definitions from the Flat File Connection Manager into a SQL Server table definition. Since I have over a dozen data sources to process each with around 200 columns and of course like many BI techies I have little immediate influence over the structure of these flat files. I just know that these data sources are business critical.

Judging by looking at similar threads I can't be the only one who would greatly benefit from being able to upload column definitions from the Flat File Connection Manager into a SQL Server table definition as opposed to doing this manually.

Thanks in advance,

Kieran.

User Defined Function: Convert String Value Of Table To Table Object

Jul 20, 2005

Does anyone know where to find or how to write a quick user defined fucntionthat will return a table object when passed the string name of the tableobject. The reason why I want dynamicallly set the table name in a storedprocudue WITHOUT using concatination and exec a SQL String.HenceIf @small_int_parameter_previous = 1 then@vchar_tablename = "sales_previous"else@vchar_tablename = "sales"Endselect * from udf_TableLookup(@vchar_tablename )So if I pass 1, that means I want all records from "sales_previous"otherwise give me all records from "sales" (Sales_Previous would last yearssales data for example).udf_TableLookup would I guess lookup in sysobjects for the table name andreturn the table object? I don't know how to do this.I want to do this to avoid having 2 stored procedures..one for current andone for previous year. Please respond to group so others may benfiit from you knowledge.ThanksErik

SQL Call To Count The Total Rows In Table B For Each User In Table A

Jan 17, 2006

I have 2 tables:

TableA:
Name
UserA
UserB
UserC

Table B:
Name               Data
UserA              xxx
UserB              asdasd
UserB              ewrsad
UserC              dsafasc
UserA              sdf
UserB              dfvr4

I want to count the total entries in Table B for every user in Table A.  The output would be:

Name               Count
UserA              2
UserB              3
UserC              1

I can use a Select Count statement, but I will have to make a SQL call for every user in Table A.  Also, Table A is dynamic, so the users are always changing.  Can this be incorporated into one SQL call to count the total rows in Table B for each user in Table A?

Xml/c# Class Definition

May 30, 2007

Good morning, all!

I'm tasked with creating POCO (C# Class Object) and XML definitions for three different kinds of records coming from my input file. The problem is that I'm not sure how to do this within the SSIS framework. It seems to me that I can somehow define a class and include XML element tags in the definition, but I'm not sure where to look/who to ask/how to do that!

The goal is to be able to assign the data types and class attributes for various parts of each input record based on position, and to serialize the data as XML (and therefore my inputs to my Data Flow will be XML objects instead of a flat file, as I had been doing it...).

Can anyone point me at a good tutorial? Or a simple example?

Also, is "DateTime" a recognized data type in C#?

Thanks a bunch!
