Altered Table-changed Column From Text To Varchar And Now Having Issues With Alter Switch

Working on partitioning a few large tables. One of the tables included a text column and the €œTEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]€? clause which would prevent the partitioning of this table. After some research we found that the data was legacy and no longer used. We updated the column on the affected rows to NULLS and altered the column to a VARCHAR(20)
When I attempted to run the ALTER TABLE SWITCH I encountered the error
Msg 4947, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER TABLE SWITCH statement failed. There is no identical index in source table 'LocalDeltanet.dbo.testresultsjoe' for the index 'PKIDX_testSummary' in target table 'LocalDeltanet.dbo.testresults_part'.
After a lot of grief and testing I determined that the message was bogus and the real issue is that the 'sys.tables' still has €œlob_data_space_id€? with a value of 1 for this table.
I created a copy of the table with the text column altered to varchar and one with just the varchar to begin with. After copying data from the original table, I tried to run the alter switch. It failed once again for the text column altered to varchar table, but it worked for the varchar from the start.
Since it appears that this value is causing my issues, is there anyway to update the table in place. I know I can BCP the data out, but that would take too long and would defeat the advantage of using the alter switch method.
BOL States:
The allow updates option is still present in the sp_configure stored procedure, although its functionality is unavailable in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (the setting has no effect). In SQL Server 2005, direct updates to the system tables are not supported. This means we cannot update the table manually.

I am having problem when performing the alter table switch. Both tables are identical and have pk.

A customer wants to implement table partitioning on a replicated table.
They want to hold 13 months of data in the table and roll off the earliest/oldest month to an identical archive table. The table has a date field and partitioning by month makes sense all around.
So SWITCH PARTITION is the obvious solution to this, except for the fact that the table is replicated (transactional w/no subscriber updates).
What are his architectural or practical solutions to using table partitioning and replication?

I need to modify existing table in my database to varchar(max) from varchar(2000)
This table contains 30 million plus rows and has more than 70 columns.
now when i am running alter command for this it take too long(more than 9 mins) which is not acceptable. . Is their any way to reduce this execution time

Hi
I had a text type not null column which i wanted to change to a null column.Writing a simple alter statement gave me an eror cannot change text type column so i tried to rename the original column create a new column with the same name and allowing nulls on it and then copying the contents of the renamed column to the new column and finally deleting the renamed column.
EXEC sp_rename 'TableName.ColumnName', 'ColumnName_old', 'COLUMN'ALTER TABLE TableName ADD ColumnName text NULLUPDATE TableName SET ColumnName = ColumnName_oldALTER TABLE TableName DROP COLUMN ColumnName_old
However when i tried to execute these statements in query analyser on the Update statement it gave me the error that ColumnName_old does not exist.
However then I tried to execute these queries one by one I was able to do that.
Can anybody tell me whats causing the queries to not be executed all at once without giving the ColumnName_old does not exist error cause I wanted to run them on live dbs.
any help would be appreciated.

I have switched my datatype to varChar(7000). I set to "only" 7000 to allow for the addition of other fields and still stay under a 8000byte record limit. My data is still being truncated sometimes. I''m not even able to get up near 7000 characters on the big text field.

Hi I’m trying to alter a table and delete a column I get the following error. The object 'DF__Morningst__LastU__19EB91BA' is dependent on column 'LastUpdated'.
ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN LastUpdated failed because one or more objects access this column. I tried deleting the concerned constraint. But the next time I get the same error with a different constraint name. I want to find out if I can dynamically check the constraint name and delete it and then drop the column. Does the architecture in 2012, 2014 releases make this less of an issue ?
In other words, why bother going from Varchar(1000) to Varchar(50) ?

On sqlserver 2000 transactional replication:
How would I best go about changing a published table's column from smallint to int? I could not find anything about it in BOL or MS.com. I do not think EM/Replication Properties allows the change. I suspect I have to run "Alter Table/Column" on the Publisher and each Subscriber the old-fashioned way. Is that true?

I need to extract specific text elements from a varchar column. There are three keywords in any given string: "wfTask," "wfStatus" and "displayReportFromWorkflow." "wfTask" and "wfStatus" can appear multiple times, but always as a pair and will each be followed by by "==" (with or without surrounding spaces). "displayReportFromWorkflow" is always followed by "(" and there can be spaces on either side. The text elements will be between a pair of double quotes, and following one of keywords. For each row, I need to return the task, status and report name.

I am unable to get FTS working where the column to be searched is type varchar(MAX) or Text. I can get this to work if my column to be indexed is some statically assigned array size such as varchar(1000).
For instance this works, and will return all applicable results.

In SQL Server 2005,here are two tables, created by the following SQL Statements:

For the table student is referenced by table score, the alter statement can not alter the column of the table student, and the SQL Server DBMS give the errors.
But, I can manually alter the length of the column ID in SQL SERVER Management Studio. How to alter column length of the master table(student) along with the slave table(score)?

i changed my state table from char 20 to varchar 20 and it still fills it with empty space at the end of the statename
I tried entering it with the trim command still no good
i looked a the sql command made in vs and it says that the variables are varchar
is there something i am missing with varchar
does it only work properly if it is over 50 or does it not change completely when you change from char to varchar

i have table Table1 with column lastname ,firstname ect.The Data type is varchar.
I have inserted values. I have selected records from this table and assign this records to the TDC control of the HTML .The query returns 130 records.The TDC control has the Unicode delimiter. Whene we select top 7 ,seven records are displayed ,when it is top 8 it does not show any records.
If we delete the Lastname and Firstname values for this 8th record then all the 130 records are displayed.
Why is this happning.Any great minds can help me in this pls
