Analysis Service: Pb When Archiving/restoring From 1 Machine To Another

Oct 19, 2004

I have to install cubes on another machine (not on the same site/NT domain).
I have archived the OLAP db and generated a .cab file.

I have retored on the destination server.
It works fine in Analysis Manager console (I can process and lokk at the data).
But when I want to access the cube from Excel using OLAP cube, I have an error msg.

Is there something I need to do on the distination server ?
Langage, SP, role, version of SQLServer/Analysis services ...

Thanks

Analysis Services Archiving Is Working On One Server

Oct 5, 2001

Hi,

I am able to archive the Analysis Services db's using the msmdarch on one server but not the other server. (It is working in the Test environment but not the Production environment.) Here are the details:

Both servers are SQL Server 2000 sp1.
I compared sp_configure and both servers have the same settings.
The Production server is clustered and the Test Server is not clustered.

I can archive in TEST using the following:
- From Analysis Manager
- Using the msmdarch command from a command prompt
- From a scheduled job using the "Operating System Command" Type from a job step entering the msmdarch command in the Command box.
- Using the msmdarch command with xp_cmdshell within Query Analyzer and from a Stored Procedure.

I can archive in PRODUCTION only using:
- From Analysis Manager
- Using the msmdarch command from a command prompt
** It does not work from a job or from Query Analyzer

I have checked the permissions of the SQL Server Agent account on both servers and they are identical with sa rights and a member of the OLAP Administrators group.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing this?

Thank You

Michael

Archiving Data Transformation Service Packages

Feb 29, 2000

Is there a way, for example to script a DTS Package, so that it can be deleted and recreated at a later date if necessary? I have quiet alot of these, but few are used regularly. The msdb database is now up to 80 MB. However I don't want to delete them and have no way to recreate them.If I took a backup of msdb and then deleted the packages, would restoring msdb at a later date restore the packages?????

Analysis :: Excel 2013 Pivot-table / Grouping On Date That Comes From Analysis Service 2008?

Nov 24, 2015

I am using

SSAS: version 2008
Excel: version 2013

I am connecting to SSAS cube from Excel and I have date dimension with 4 fields (I have others but I don't use it for this case). I created 4 fields in order to test all possible scenarios that I could think of:

DateKey:
    - Type: System.Integer
    - Value: yyyyMMdd
Date:
    - Type: System.DateTime
DateStr0:
    - Type: System.String
    - Value: dd/MM/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture)
    - Example: 01/11/2015
DateStr1:
    - Type: System.String
    - Value: %d/%M/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture)
    - Example: 1/11/2015

Filtering on date is working fine:

Initially, in excel, filtering on date was not working. But after changing dimensional type to time, and setting  DataType to Date, as mentioned in [URL] filter is working fine as you can see in the picture.Grouping on date is not working:

I have hierarchy in my Date dimension and I can group based on hierarchy, no problem. But user is used to pre-build grouping function of excel, and he wants to use that. Pre-build functions of Excel, Group and ungroup seems to be available as you can see in following picture:

But when user clicks 'Group', excel groups it as if it is a string, and that is the problem. User wants to group using pre-build grouping function available in Pivot table. I also find out that Power Pivot Table does not support this excel grouping functionality. And if I understood well, this pre-build grouping functionality of excel, needs to do calculation at run time, and that is not viable solution if you have millions of rows. So Power pivot table does not support pre-build grouping functionality of excel and hence we need to use dimension hierarchy to do the grouping. But I am not using Power Pivot table, I am using simple Pivot Table. So I expect grouping functionality to be working fine. Then I tried to do simple test. I created a simple data source in excel itself. And use it as source of my Pivot table. Then grouping is working fine. The only difference that I can see is (When double click the Measure value in Excel),For date values of my simple test, excel consider them as 'Date'.

For date values of my data coming from cube, excel consider them as 'General'

2.1. But value here is same as it was in simple test.

2.2. 'Date Filter' works just fine.

2.3. If I just select this cell and unselect it, then excel change type to 'Date' though for that cell.

2.4. I have created 4 different types of fields in my date dimension thinking that values of attribute of my dimension might be the problem, but excel consider 'General' for all of them.

2.5 This value (that can be seen when double clicking on measure) comes from 'Name Column' of the attribute. And the DataType defined is WChar. And I thought that might be the reason of issue. And I changed it to 'Date'. But SSAS does not allow it to change to 'Date' giving error : The 'Date' data type is not allowed for the 'NameColumn' property; 'WChar' should be used.

So, I don't know, what is the puzzle piece that I am missing.

1. Date filter works, group does not work

2. Excel consider it as 'General' string.

3. SSAS does not allow to change 'NameColumn' to Date.

Restoring Backup On New Machine

Jan 4, 2007

Hi all,

My first post on these forums and I'm hoping someone can please help me before I pull all of my hair out.

I'm currently working on the redevelopment of a website. The old one was written in ASP and we're going to totally redo the whole thing. As a lot of the content was dynamic I want to fire up the old site on my laptop to browse and pull content from. I have a backup of the entire website which I have put under a fresh IIS install. I also have a backup of the MSSQL database. I have restored this to the local machine and can view it using the SQL Server Management Studio. The problem is that I think I am having lots of trouble synching the users/permissions for it. We don't have a backup of the Master databases so I am stuck with what I can extract from the site backup and web code.

Trying to load the old index.asp I get either of these error messages quote:'Login failed for user 'Username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection' or 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied.' depending on how I've played with the user permissions.

Please can someone help me sort this out so that the old ASP webpages can access the DB again? I'm used to mySQL/PHP so am struggling a bit to get this going.

-Edit-
Bit more info. Here are the connection details the site uses within an ASP page.
<%
dim Conn

'---------------------Create connection------------------------------------------------------
Set Conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Conn.Open "Driver={SQL Server};Server=MYSERVER;Database=dbTest;uid=dbTestUser;pwd=testpasssql"

%>

Restoring Master On Another Machine...

Apr 19, 2006

We set up a test box and having been trying to move an entire instancefrom our production server to this one. I have moved all my createddbs using the RESTORE WITH MOVE. Now I am trying to move the Master,Model, and msdb. This is where I am having trouble. On the productionbox the dbs are stored on D:mssql$instancenamedata. On the testserver the data is stored in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQLServermssql$instancenamedata. Also the server names are different. So I finally got the Master from production to restore over the test'scopy. Now the instance will not start. I was trying to use thefollowing code in cmd line to connect to the instace so I could thencopy model and msdb:sqlservr -c -f -T3608 -T4022 -sINSTANCENAMEWhen this is trying to connect I read it is failing and saying that theMDF and LDF may be corrupt or not there. The problem is it is nowtrying to look in D:mssql$instancenamedata instead of C:ProgramFilesMicrosoft SQL Servermssql$instancenamedata. Any ideas on how Ican change this, or if I have to reinstall the entire instace, not runinto this again?

How To Connect To Analysis Service Database Through Reporting Service?

Mar 31, 2006

Hello,

In our project, we would like to use the same data source for our analysis service database cubes and for our reporting service reports.

I created the analysis service project first, deployed successfully. When trying to setting up the data source in the report model project, I selected the "create a data source based on another object", and then selected the "create a data source based on an analysis service project". However, there is no analysis service project to select, and no browse button to see where the reporting service is looking for analysis service project either.

I have tried creating a new analysis service project with data source views, cubes, dimensions and all the stuff, but still cannot see the analysis service project in the drop down box to be selected for my reporting model project data source.

As I am fairly new to the reporting service, I'm sure I'm missing something, but couldn't find much information in the help or on the web. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Annie

Connect To SSIS Service On Machine Localhost Failed

Nov 8, 2006

Greetings all,I cannot connect to my SSIS service from Management Studio. This is on my local machine, which is my "sandbox" and preliminary development platform.

There are slightly different error messages and extended information returned depending on whether I connect using "localhost" or my explicit machine name.

I have tried registering MSXML*.dll as suggested elsewhere in these forums. I've also tried the DCOM config changes suggested elsewhere in these forums (or someone's blog?) - can't find the link at the moment.

This is all on the same machine and I am a local admin on this machine.

Anyone seen this? Anyone have any suggestions. I'd appreciate any tips.

Regards,

Tom

Windows Service Account Issue When Restoring Master To Another Server

Nov 7, 2007

I noticed when I restore a master database to a server other then the one which created the backup of master, SQL Server contains the following three local security groups that were defined on the source server. The problem is these groups are "local" and do not apply to the server where master was restored.

ServerNameSQLServer2005MSFTEUser$ServerName$InstanceName
ServerNameSQLServer2005MSSQLUser$ServerName$InstanceName
ServerNameSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$ServerName$InstanceName

For example, if you have a default SQL Server instance named MARKETING_TEST the security folder will contain the following three entries.

MARKETING_TESTSQLServer2005MSFTEUser$MARKETING_TEST$MSSQLSERVER
MARKETING_TESTSQLServer2005MSSQLUser$MARKETING_TEST$MSSQLSERVER
MARKETING_TESTSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$MARKETING_TEST$MSSQLSERVER

If you then backup the master database on an instance named MARKETING_PROD and restore it to MARKETING_TEST, the security folder on MARKETING _TEST will now contain the following three entries.

MARKETING_PRODSQLServer2005MSFTEUser$MARKETING_PROD$MSSQLSERVER
MARKETING_PRODSQLServer2005MSSQLUser$MARKETING_PROD$MSSQLSERVER
MARKETING_PRODSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$MARKETING_PROD$MSSQLSERVER

These entries would be invalid because no such server exists and therefor no such local groups exists. There appears to be no Microsoft documentation explaining how to handle these groups when restoring master from one server to another. My assumption is that whenever restoring master to another server you must drop these three groups and add the correct corresponding groups along with the appropriate permissions. I don't understand why SQL Server would not rebuild this information for you during a restore.

Any explanations?

Dave
