BIDS Gives Me 'cannot Find One Or More Components' Error After Install
Sep 17, 2007
I have a Windows XP PC that we are trying to install SQL Tools on. When I install I get an error message that says 'cannot find one or more components'. When I finish the install, everything works except Buisiness Intelligence Development Studio, which is the product we will use the most. We do not have Visual Studio.Net or any of those product on this PC.
We have tried uninstalling and reintalling. We have tried both the Enterprise and Development CDs to get the tools installed. Both give us this error.
Any ideas?

I have Vista Ultimate (IIS Enabled), SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
(downloaded and ran the SP2 Update), Visual Studio 2008. VS2008
installs no problem. When I install SQL Server 2005, I get an error
when it trys to install the last part( Workstation Components,
Management Studio, etc).
I have tried FULLY, MANUALLY removing all SQL products and registry
entries. I have used Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I have tried
Microsoft's recommended way of manually removing SQL Server 2005.
If I manually run SqlRun_Tools.msi the error comes up right away.
The error is:
"A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is
already
installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the
template.ini and
set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."
Here's the Setup Error log: http://toby.pastebin.com/f63405e24
Any help?! Thanks!

Thank you to all that take the time to read this!
All software is installed on a single development pc. I have a SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition Database that I am using to test a new Accounting System. SQL Server 2000 is the required format. I would like to start developing some SRSS reports against that database. It was suggested that I install the SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, because I was told 2005 is less buggy and easier to use. I installed SRSS 2005, and only SRSS 2005, and used the Configuration Tool to get it configured properly, I think. I have green checks on everything except "Email Settings" and "Execution Account"
Now, I want to write some reports. BIDS is not under the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005" program group, only "Configuration Tools". I was also told that I could use Visual Studio to write reports. I installed Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition. When I go start a new project, "Business Intelligence€? is not a project type or sub-type.
What do I need to do so I can either install BIDS or use VS 2005 to write reports?

Hi
I have installed SQL Server 2005 but Integration Services is just not there. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and in the process uninstalled an old version of Visual Studio.NET (manually because it wouldn't uninstall automatically) and Visual Web Developer, just in case they were interfering with Integration Services. No luck, in fact it got worse, now Analysis Services also does not work because it can't find devenv.exe!
I have installed exactly this same software on another clean PC (ie. no previous Visual Studio variants on it) and it installs perfectly.
There seems to be some kind of clash between old versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server 2005 that prevents SQL Server from properly installing products like Integration Services that use the Visual Studio interface (ie. devenv.exe).
I now can't even reinstall the old version of Visual Studio.NET, and devenv.exe is nowhere to be found on my PC although it is referenced throughout the registry.
Has anyone got any suggestions, all I am after if a full and clean install of SQL Server 2005 so I can develop against it using Visual Web Developer.
Thanks

Hello,
Say I have a composite index, how can I programmatically find the components knowing only the table name?
For example, an index was created as follows:
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX [some_table_index] ON [some_table]([col1], [col2]) ON [PRIMARY]
Now, I'd like to get back 'col1' and 'col2' when I search for 'some_table'.
Thank you

I've got VS 2008 Pro installed, as well as SQL Sever 200 (which I must keep installed). When I run the install for SQL Server 2005 developer edition, it continually fails to install
SQL Setup Support Files
SQL Native Client
Backward Compatability Files
SQLXML4
Workstation Components
I'm at a complete loss here. I've googled the problem, and apparently this is not uncommon. Is there a good resolution to this?

Hi,
I had a perfectly good working copy of SQL Server 2005 installed. However, at some point I needed the Report Services Designer so I could edit my reports in Visual Studio. I inserted the CD and selected the feature from the list and it installed. Only problem being that it has completely removed my Management Studio and practically every other tool I didnt explicitly checked when installing the RS Designer.
When I tried to run the same Setup again and check everything, it tells me that there is no change between what I have selected and what is installed, which sounds like total bs to me, since my pc doesnt have a management studio etc anymore.
Out of pure misery I decided to remove my entire SQL Server installation, inc Instance, hoping to start anew and achieve the result I wanted with the least amount of frustration. I ended up here and followed it all the way: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967
When I started reinstalling, I ran into something new. The installer refuses to let me install anything but the Workstation components, books online and development tools. All the other options are greyed out and not even available.
Someone please help me get my SQL Server back up and running because I'm getting hopeless.

Hi,
I have bought SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed. which will be used only to host databases for different applications like WSUS, McAfee Protection Pilot and CA Brightstor ArcServer.
I do not have intention to create corporate applications using SQL Server.
In fact, I am using the SQL Server as a "multiple MSDE database server"...
My question is what are the minimal components between the following features to install (as I do not not really what they are doing) :
-SQL Server
-Analysis Services
-Reporting Services
-Notification Services
-Data Tranformation Services
-Workstation Components
Thanks in advance

We're trying to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 (from 2000), but we're having consistent problems getting BIDS to install correctly.
The BIDS installation has failed on four of seven machines we've tried installing the SQL Server 2005 tools on. Not very good odds. Note that the rest of the SQL Server tools installed correctly; only BIDS is hosed. Two of the three machines where BIDS installed correctly were fresh Window's XP installs; one, however, wasn't a fresh install, so it's a mild enigma.
On the other four machines we've had the following issues with BIDS:
the shortcut created in the Start menu tries to load 'devenv.exe', but it's missing. BIDS doesn't start.
'devenv.exe' is on the system, however upon starting BIDS we're greeting with a generic pop-up that says, "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application.". Reinstalling the application does not help.
Thanks for any help or insight.

Hi,
I'm currently trying to develop an unattended installation of the Client Tools to be distributed to developers workstations.
All is well on 'clean' machines, but the problems arise when an instance of SQL Server Express is already present. The install fails, and the reason isn't clear from the log files.
I know Express installs a couple of the Client Components (like Config Manager), and I believe this is what it blocking me.
Has anyone tried this scenario?
Would I be best to REMOVE the Client_Components first, and then re-install them with SSMS etc.? Or is there a better method?
I have to leave the Express Database instance untouched as I'm not responsible for its installation or maintenance.
Thanks,
Gordon.

I'm trying to do an unattended install of the client components for SLQ2005. I have read the document on doing a install from the command prompt but when I use the "ADDLOCAL" switches I get some components that I don't require. For example, I am using the following command to run the setup - "start /wait <path>setup.exe ADDLOCAL=Client_Components,SQL_Tools90,Connectivity". When I look at the Add/Remove Programs list I can see that it has installed "MSXML 6.0 Parser", "SQL 2005 Backward Compatibilty" and "Office 2003 Web Components". The only components I require are the "SQL Support Files", "SQL Server Native Client" and " CLient Tools". If I run "start /wait <path>setup.exe REMOVE=SQLXML,TOOLS_BC_DEP" it will remove "Office 2003 Web Components" and "SQL 2005 Backward Compatibilty" but not the "MSXML 6.0 Parser". How can I get rid of this?
Thanks for any help.

Yesterday, SQL Server 2005 SP2 was installed on our DEV Server (Windows 2003 SP1 x86) and now I cannot right-click a package in the Solutions Explorer window in BIDS and Execute Package. When I do, I get the following error
===================================
Object reference not set to an instance of an object. (Microsoft Visual Studio)
------------------------------
Program Location:
at Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Project.DtsPackagesFolderProjectFeature.ExecuteTaskOrPackage(ProjectItem prjItem, String taskPath)
I know I could do this yesterday morning pre SP2. I've attempted this with a couple of different packages and solutions, so it is probably not a corrupt package (unless now they are all corrupt). I can execute in debug mode if I open the package first and then hit Start Debugging. However this is not always an optimal solution because I sometimes have many connected packages and sometimes what gets executed is not what is expected.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I am getting the following error while attempting to install the Workstation components on my SQL2005 Standard Server.
To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.
I know the problem is related to a previous installation of Enterprise Edition on the same server. I have tried deleting all SQL files, and registry keys yet I am still getting the same error.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I didn´t know where to put this so sorry if this is not the appropriate place.
I am running Windows XP pro sp2 with visual studio 2005, ms sql server 2005, and a number of other applications.
My problem is that I am not allowed to install new windows components(I want to install IIS). When I try to access from either control panel, add/remove programs, Install new windows components or directly from the winXP cd I get the following error in a pop-up form and I can only press "OK":
"Another copy of Setup is already running. Complete the other Setup or restart Windows."
I am not running the instance more than once. I do this as the first thing after a restart with the same result. When looking at the processes in the task manager I cant see anything unusual.
It is a pretty slow computer so that may have something to do with it - some timeout or similar.
It is getting pretty frustrating so any suggestions are more than welcomed! thanks.
EDIT: I used process explorer to locate some stalled windows update process which I killed. Then msmqocm.inf was missing, but that seems to be a FAQ.

I've got SQL Server 2014 Developer installed, and working.  After rebooting, the event log looks like it's working fine.  However, ever since I uninstalled Visual Studio 2013 Premier and installed Visual Studio 2015 Professional, both with SQL Server Data Tools, whenever I try to start SQL Server 2014 Management Studio, I get "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application."Is there any way I can avoid uninstalling SQL Server?
I managed to solve this, based on a recommendation (at URL...).  I ran SQL Server's setup.exe, and chose Repair, and now it appears that all is well.

Hello.
When I install SQL Server 2005, it all goes well except that it fails to install these two:
- SQLXML 4
- workstation components and tools
When I try to install these two from the CD in the Setup folder of the CD 2 with the files sqlxml4.msi and sqlRun_Tools.msi (if I remember these names correctly), it gives me an error:
'Ce package d'installation n'est pas pris en charge par ce type de processeur'
Sorry. My SQL CDs are in french, but it roughly translates to the message:
This installation package is not taken by this processor.
I thought that my hardware configuration does not meet the requirements. But I have a Pentium 4, 2Gig RAM, over 100Gig free HD space. Also I tried to install on other computers to no avail. This is a fresh install, that is, there is no previous SQL Server 2000 in it, no VS.NET 2005 or before. Nothing. I have just a fresh, new computer.
Can anyone help, please?

Hi all,
I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition ISO from the following site and burned it onto a DVD.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6931FA7F-C094-49A2-A050-2D07993566EC&displaylang=en
Prior to this I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edtion. During setup I have selected all the native client components i.e. Management Studio, Business Intelligense Studio. But after the install I am not able to see them under All Programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2005. On further searching I have come across this link
http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=142941
First of all, there is no sqlrun_tools.msi under setup folder of the dvd. And also when I tried to change component from Add/Remove programs and following the instructions as specified on clicking Change Installed components all that I see are: Connectivity Components and Software Development kit.
Could someone tell me how can I install Management Studio/ Business Intelligence Studio seperately? I don't want to go through the process of re-installation.

Everything I've read says that custom data flow components are built by inheriting from the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.PipelineComponent class.
But the stock components such as the Derived Column data flow transformation must each be implemented by their own class. So how do I base my custom components on those classes? The documentation for the PipelineComponent class doesn't list any such subclasses.

Hi,
In another thread Jamie Thomson very informatively said "The components in SSIS
are deliberately atomic (i.e. they do something very specific) so that
its easy to put them together to build something greater than the sum
of the parts". Which does make a lot of sense. However, I've been finding that I end up having to create exactly the same "pattern" of combined transform components again and again in order to solve the same problem but in different dataflows (or even within the same dataflow). Cut-and-paste-tastic! In order to obtain real re-use, it seems to me like SSIS is crying out for an easy way to create new components by using composition - i.e. the ability to take commonly-used combinations of existing components and create new "super" components (without having to write Custom Transform Components in C#/VB.Net and handle everything in code).
Does anyone know if this sort of functionality is likely to make it into SSIS in the forseeable future?
Regards,
Lawrie

We are using SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition SP2. I have a fixed-length flat file import spec created in SQL Server Mgmt Studio using the Import wizard. I then created an Integration Sevices project in BIDS and added the existing SQL Server package created with the wizard to the project. When I try to edit the package with the SSIS designer, it does not appear to handle the package properly. That is, only some of the fields are selected (and when I select all the available fields, still only some show up in the detail pane of the Input Columns tab), the data types are incorrect, and the starting location (it's a fixed length file, remember) for each field (LineageID?) is incorrect. My understanding is that, with Workgroup Edition, there are only two ways, other than say programmatically from a VB program, to run the package: (1) by creating a SQL Agent job or from a BIDS project. I have seen a Cumulative Update package (#2) for SP2 that mentions some problems in BIDS' handling of SSIS pkgs, but the symptoms are in no way similar to this. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?? Thanks.

I have developed a simple SSIS Package that will export data from an AS400 iSeries server to a flat file. When I try to debug the package I receive this error. I have tried to change the security level of the package to EncryptAllWithPassword and specified a password. For some reason the password for the connection to the AS400 is not being retained. when I enter the password the following error disappears when I try to debug the package the error returns.
Does anyone know how to correct this? Thanks in advance for your help.
Things to also know:
I am using a Native OLE DBIBM AS400 OLE DB Provider w/user name and password (Allow saving password checked) Test Connection succeeded.
I am using a OLE DB Source to extract the data with Data Access Mode of Table or View. When I try to select a table I am prompted from the AS400 to enter password. Then I can see the tables.
I can select the columns I need and click OK to save.
