Hello,
SQL 2000 backup to C dirve fails with event 17055 Operating system error = 5 access is denied. Creating and running a backup job wizards errors with SQL State 42000, Deveice error or device off line. SQL is running as LocalSystem. The backup destination has every Windows group added with Full Control.
Thanks
I have tried this many times....cleaned all previous MS SQL installations...rebooted....all with the same result below.
I insert Disc 1 of the Developer edition and all is find until it gets to the main installation...then OWC fails ("Setup cannot find the files specified") although I have an open Internet connection from where it can be downloaded.
Then the main Database server and Integration services installation fails, and other components succeed. When I click the error message it says "Please insert Disc 2" - although the main installation never prompts for Disc 2 (which are the Tools I believe).
Even if I install Disc 2, the installation never succeeds - and the main componets I am interested in - Database server and Integration services - always fails.
I use the Transact-SQL BACKUP statement in Visual Basic to backup my local MSSQL Database. It give me this error
Error 3041
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE [BCFPC] to BCFPCBKP
I already created a backup device called BCFPCBKP and it is backup to the disk.
I tried to run the same BACKUP statement in SQL Query Analyzer and it worked fine. I tried to run my VB application in another PC. It worked fine when i use this command remotely. Can anyone tell me what's the problem?
Is there any benefit in creating a backup device and using that in the backup statement over just using a disk file in the backup statement. It seems like extra work to create the backup device with sp_addumpdevice with the file location. Whereas I could just specify the file location right in the BACKUP statement by specifying DISK as the backup device.
In SQL 2000, is there an advantage to defining and using a backupdevice versus just backing up to disk?Currently, I've got a SQL Backup job set to run once per day, withtransaction log backups running every hour. The db and backups arewritten directly to folders on an external disk array. I've neverconfigured an actual Backup Device within SQL. Does creating a BackupDevice offer any advantages not available with my current backupmethod?Thank you for any help.Jason
I am using the Simple recovery model and I'm taking a weekly full backup each Monday morning with differentials taken every 4 hours during the day.
On Wednesday afternoon, a programmer ran a process that corrupted the db and I had to restore to the most recent differential. It was 5pm in the afternoon and a differential backup had just occured at 4pm. No problem, I figured.
I restored the full backup from Monday morning and tried to restore the most recent differential backup. The differential restore failed. Since I had used T-SQL for the initial attempt, I tried using Enterprise Manager to try again.
When viewing the backup history, I see my initial full backup taken on Monday plus all the differentials. BUT, on closer inspection, I noticed another full backup in the backup history that was taken early Tuesday morning. I can't figure out where this Tuesday morning full backup came from. It wasn't taken by me (or scheduled by me) and I'm the only one with access to the server. My full backups are usually named something like HCMPRP_20070718_FULL.bak. This erroneous full backup was named something like HCMPRP_03a_361adk2k_dd53.bak. It seemed like it was a system generated name. Not something I would choose. To top it off, I could not find this backup file anywhere on the server and when I tried to restore using this full backup, it failed.
Does anyone have any clues as to where this full backup might come from? Does SQL Server trigger a full backup on its own if some threshold is reached?
I ended up having to restore using the differential taken just before this erroneous full backup and lost a day of transactions.
I am getting occasional failures of a SQL Server 7.0 complete backup to disk on a production database. The errors seem to indicate that another process has the disk file open at the time of the backup. The errors contain the following texts : -
'Cannot open backup device' 'Operating System Error=32 Process cannot access file because it is being used by another process'.
The only other process that should access the disk file is an ARCserveIT scheduled job to copy the disk backup to tape but this is completing long before.
If databases on a physical drive [G:] are fragmented, and the drive isextended by adding more hard drives to the array, does it make sense tobackup and restore the fragmented databases?The Windows Server should be able to find contiguous space for eachdatabase, since it shows 75% free space on the SQL Data drive withoutany file fragments on it.Or will it restore to the original location, in which case does it makesense to delete the databases and restore them from the backups?Thank you very much!
We get frequent (1 out of 3) "sqlmaint.exe failed" errors during backups for one of our larger databases (40GB). So i removed the maintenance plan and put in a custom backup job to get a better error msg in the log:
BackupMedium::ReportIoError: write failure on backup device 'F:MSSQLmydb_2008_1_3_21_45.BAK'. Operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.).
However, we have PLENTY of space on disk: LOG DISK - NTFS - used space = 2GB, free space = 81GB BACKUP DISK - NTFS - used space = 29GB, free space = 82GB So even if it doubled in size, there would still be 50GB free.
In SQL Server 2005, via the GUI, I wish to backup a database to an additional disk file (there is already an existing backup disk file for this database), so that I can have more than one backup. I've added the new disk file name, highlighted it, and clicked OK.
I get an immediate error (see below). Note, the 2nd error message is specifying the existing backup disk file, not the new one I'm attempting to create.
"Backup failed for Server 'WCS-DEV-TPA'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)"
"System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The volume on device 'D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLBACKUPWCS_ADV_Longmont.bak' is not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)"
Does anyone know what causes this and how to correct it?
hello,all I am new to Sql 2000,I installed sql 2000 database in C disk,but Now I found my C disk space is smaller than before,So I want to move my databse(include data and structure) from C Disk to D Disk(its space is very large) . is it possible to do it ? if its can be done ,do I need to change my asp.net program source code (exp: chaneg my crystal report connectstring ) ? thanks in advanced!
I am using SMO EnumAvailableSqlServer to make a list of available SQL servers in local network. I have tested it in two different local networks. In the first all works fine, but in the second I have noticed that when disconnected from the network the call fails to even detect the locally installed sql servers. I know that I can scan registry to get installed local servers, but I want to know what could be making problem.
I am trying to add a new subscription to the local subscriptions of a SQL Server 2005. As soon as I click on SERVER_NAME -> Replication -> Local Replications -> New Subscription, I get the following error message:

What is the percentage of FREE disk space that is needed for a backup? I have backups that are failing with no disk space errors. But there is enough disk. Does SQL Server need a percentage of free space all the time?
When I select All Actions>Backup Database and then click the ... button to choose a location on the hard drive, SQL Enterprise Manager Hangs and I have to kill it from Task Manager.
All other areas of EM browse the disk drive without a problem. (DTS, File Groups, etc.)
I want to perform backups to a network drive. I need to know if I can access the backup drive via UNC. I have not been able to get it to work and, for now, I would just like to know if what I am trying to do SHOULD work.
For example I want to backup to device mdtnts_prod02LM2BackupNameBack.DAT.
Hello-I have a Sql Server 2000 database offsite that I would like to back upto a local machine. I am using Enterprise Manager on a local machine toadminister the remote db.Whats the best way to schedule backups so the remote db is backed up tothe local machine?Can this be done in Enterprise Manager?Would you recommend any 3rd party software?Thanks!MB
Guys I was wondering if you can help me figure out the problem with the script.
1) I am getting the following error message on one of the job which is backing up all the databases on the server.

Not sure where to start. I looked up the backup script it looks fine.

2)Also I have another script which for some reason doesn't run on some nights. Its enabled and the job is scheduled daily but its not running for about a week.

Hi, I have created an sql server 2005 maintenance plan for a daily backup. The plan has two 'Back up database task' i.e. one backup on the local drive while the second on a network drive. When the plan is executed, a backup is created on the local drive but not on the network drive. If i check the log, it says "Access Denied" whereas i have full access to the network drive with complete permissions to read, write and delete. Can anyone help me understand how to take a backup on both a local and network drive at the same time using a maintenance plan ? I shall be obliged... Regards...
I have a trans log backup that runs every 15 minutes on san, works fine until I do a backup after a large load. I get the below error message. Anyone had this before?
Executed as user: DPSCSDOMsqlexec. The file on device 'n:sqllogsmdentallgdmp' is not a valid Microsoft Tape Format backup set. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3242) BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3013). The step fail
My transaction log backup is failing with the following error: Does anyone know how I can fix it? (null) Microsoft (R) SQLMaint Utility (Unicode), Version 8.00.194 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation (null) Logged on to SQL Server as 'NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM' (trusted) Starting maintenance plan 'Maint Plan - TLogs' on 5/7/2001 8:18:11 AM Backup can not be performed on database. I am trying to backup a database to a tape. It works when it wants to. I get a 3013 error. The drive is fully functional. Seagate backup works fine. SQL Backup does not. I think it might be that the tape needs retensioning sometimes. Here is the sql statement: BACKUP DATABASE pubs TO TAPE='.ape0' WITH FORMAT. Is there a retension parameter I am failing to see?
Our Transaction Log backup job runs every two hours from 7:00am to 8:59pm. Today, our Full backup job and the first Transaction Lob backup job ran successfully. Subsequent Transaction Log Backups have failed with the following error message under Job History:
"The job failed. The Job was invoked by Schedule 13 (Schedule 1). The last step to run was step 1 (Step 1)."
The caveats are that the database is in Full recovery mode and a .TRN file is generated on the server. Also, the SQL Server log says the job ran successfully. Any ideas?
HelloI'm seeing the backup using SMO fails with big databases (>15GB). Ihave a 2GB database and I can see the command go thru. in Profiler butafter it's about 50-70% done, I get an exception saying backup failed.There is no details on the SQLServer log.Here's the code snippet:bk.Initialize = m_backupInit;bk.PercentCompleteNotification = 10;bk.PercentComplete += newPercentCompleteEventHandler(bk_PercentComplete);bk.SqlBackup(m_Server);Here's the command as captured by SQL-Profiler:BACKUP DATABASE [Test_MODEL] TO DISK = N'D:TempTest_Model_Backup.dat' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NOSKIP, REWIND,NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10Has anyone else seen this. The wierd thing is it works using old SQL-DMO.thanksSunit
I've problems with backing up the certificate (on the Witness Server). On principal and mirror, it works fine (Win 2003 Server, US English), but on my local PC (XP Prof, German) what i use as witness Server following backup command raises an error:
USE master;
CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'something$Strong123';
CREATE CERTIFICATE HOST_W_cert WITH SUBJECT = 'HOST_W certificate for database mirroring', START_DATE = '01/01/2006', EXPIRY_DATE = '12/31/2050';
BACKUP CERTIFICATE HOST_W_cert TO FILE = 'C:HOST_W_cert.cer';
The error message is:
Msg 15240, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot write into file 'C:HOST_W_cert.cer'. Verify that you have write permissions, that the file path is valid, and that the file does not already exist.
I connect to the database with a domain user what is a local admin on the witness server (my local user), so this couldn't be a permission reason. The file doesn't already exists, so that is not the problem.
here is the situation. I have a DB on one system. I back it up and then restore it to a second system. This second system I run reports off of and I want to create custom views that do not exist on the original system. Can I restore the backup DB from the remote system without wiping out the custom views on the local system?
I have to do this this way as they won't let us create the views we want on the remote system so the only way we have access to run the reports is by restoring the backup locally.
