Backup Jobs Not Deleting Old Files!

Sep 12, 2007

Such a simple task. Not doing as it should!!

This Maintenance Cleanup Task is set to delete all BAK and TRN files it's made (in seperate maintenance plans) in given path, with the given file extension, delete files based on the age of the file at task run time. Delete files older that 4 days.

The files are now backing up for months and months. I'm not going to take care of this. I've got a computer to do this for me, every time it runs its jobs, every 4 hours and once overnight.

This is ignoring commands and refusing to do as it's told. I've checked the settings in here over and over. It's so simple - what could be wrong? I've checked the path, the file age, the extensions... The disks are getting full!

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Deleting Backup Files Question

Aug 8, 2000

I have created some backups where expiration dates or days to be
retained were not specified.

Using EM, how do I find the old backups.

Using EM, how do I delete the old backups (hoping this will
clean up the MSDB tables and physically delete the files
from disk).

Thanks!!!!

I currently have E:MSSQL.1MSSQLBackupdatabasename_backup_20070309*.bak in my input variable and am trying to delete the file databasename_backup_200703091532.bak

Maintenance - Not Deleting Old Files

Apr 3, 2006

We have our Maintenance routines set up to delete files older that one week, but it is not working...

...Consequently, we forget to go out and remove the files manually, thus we lose backups due to the drive being full and have to manually remove files, then backup the databases and start all over again.

Has anybody had this problem and can you tell me where to look to try and figure out what the problem is ??

Thanks in advance,

Deleting Older Files

Aug 23, 2004

I have a backup job that has failed.

The database size is 20.6 GB and the Transaction logs are 135MB

The amount of disk space I have left is 3.65MB. Which I know is not going to work.

However on the maintenance plan it is suppose to remove files older than 1 day.

I am wondering if a job works like this:

Step 1 create backup file
Step 2 Create Transaction Log Back up
Step 3 Delete old backup file
Step 4 Delete old Transaction log back up

Which tell me I would need to have double amount of disk space to accommodate 2 20 GB backup file and 2 135MB Transaction log file.

Is this correct??

Also is there a way that I can have step 3,4 done first.

Deleting Files With The FTP Client On A UNIX Box

Error: 0xC002918E at FTP Task, FTP Task: Unable to delete remote files using "FTP Connection Manager".

This is a unix server. I'm able to delete the files using other FTP clients but the FTP client in the SSIS package cannot delete the files. I read on many places on the interent that this is a known MS bug. Let me know if there is some sort of work around for this. I'm using SQL servewr 2005 SSIS packages to accomplish this task..

Jobs And Configuration Files

Dec 26, 2007

Please forgive me if my question is pre-emptive (as in, I haven't throughly researched this yet), but I'd like to know in advance the following question:

Q. When scheduling SSIS jobs to run packages (in msdb), do I specify a configuration file in the job? Is this how one uses the configuration file? Or is the configuration file "configured" at the SSIS package level, before you schedule the job? Or both?

Also, is there a good link on this topic? I'm already afraid I'm going to be confused!

Thanks much!

SQL 2012 :: Deleting Already Duplicated Filestream Files?

Feb 8, 2015

I have three FileStreams (FS1 on F drive, FS2 on H drive, FS3 on E drive) belonging to the same FileStream group of one particular database (DB) which is in Simple recovery mode in the SQL Server 2012.

FS1 contains huge number of files due to which F drive is completely full.

So, I am trying to move some of the extra files from one FileStream (FS1 on F drive) to another FileStreams (FS2 on H drive and FS3 on E drive) using command:

dbcc shrinkfile('FS1', emptyfile)

Then, I take the Full and Differential backup of the database and issue the CheckPoint and try to delete the already duplicated files from the Filestream FS1 to get some space in the F drive using command:

sp_filestream_force_garbage_collection @dbname = 'DB' , @filename = 'FS1'

But still no files get deleted and I receive the output as such:

file_name num_collected_items num_marked_for_collection_items num_unprocessed_items last_collected_lsn
DB_FS1 0 0 0 25000001749500000

how to delete these already duplicated files.

I am running 2005 SP2 (It is the SP2 refresh as I downloaded the SP2 on 3/15/07) and I can't get the .txt maint plans to delete. The job completes successfully; however, the old .txt files are still there. I found this technote: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938085
although I don't receive the error message in the KB. The report does have "New Component Output" as the 1st line in the report. I still don't see how deleting the 1st line of an already run job (the report) will affect a new run of the job.

Also, I checked the version of the Microsoft.SqlServer.MaintenancePlanTasks.dll and it is at 9.00.3043.00 (which is the SP2 Refresh) in KB 933508 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933508 ).

I have several SQL/2005 servers and they all have this problem. Any help would be appreicated...

Can't Edit Jobs With Output Files Unless SA

Dec 10, 2007

In SQL2005 (SP2) I have a standard user (User1) who owns some jobs. He has been granted the "SQLAgentUserRole" in the MSDB database so he can see his jobs and run them. He has all the normal permissions (Select, Update, Insert, Execute, Delete, View References) to the schemas in the database he works in.

Here is my problem. When a developer who is logged in as User1, tires to edit a job step that has an output file (which was initially moved from another server by a DBA with SA rights) he gets the following error message.

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)
------------------------------
Only a sysadmin can specify '@output_file_name' parameter for a jobstep. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 14582)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=09.00.3156&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=14582&LinkId=20476

I have tired all kinds of permissions (like granting the user SQLAgentOperatorRole) but it is still a no go. If I (as the DBA) remove the job step's output file, then he can edit it. He can also edit other job steps in the job, as long as they do not have output files associated with them.

How can I let the job owner use output files with their job steps and not make them SA. It just does not make sense.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Deleting From A Backup Device

Sep 21, 2000

I have a transaction log which is backed up 5 times a day to a device.
The Transaction log is growing quite quickly in between each backup. The backup device is also growing at a much quicker rate.
realistically i would like to only keep 2 weeks worth of transaction log backups in the device.

for the transaction log backup i have tried the following transact-Sql
'Backup Log [imsv23] to [imsv23_TL_2] with RetainDays = 7, Init, NoUnload, Name = N'imsv23 TL V2', NoSkip,Stats=10,Noformat'

but due to all of the contents in the backup set not having expired the backup fails.

i need to reduce the size of the backup device. all of the backup sets have expiry dates but none of them are being deleted from device.

so my problem is 1 i need to remove the excessive backups from the device
2 i need to set up the automatic backups so that these datasets are removed when the expiry date is reached.

thanks in advance

Need Help In Deleting Backup Schedule

Aug 18, 2000

I created a backup device and then scheduled a recurring backup of one of my SQL databases for SMS. I right-clicked on the database name and chose All Tasks | Backup and set a daily schedule.

Now I want to delete the whole thing and use Database Maintenance Plans instead. The backup device never showed up in Management | Backup so I deleted the backup files (and devices?) from NT Explorer. The backups still occur, I'm guessing, because I never deleted the Schedule. How do I get these backups to stop?

P.S. Forgive me if this is an elementary questions -- I am new to SQL.

Thanks.

6.5 - Deleting Backup Information

Mar 12, 1999

Does anyone know a way of deleting old backup information? We'll shortly be in a position where SQL thinks we have got a certain number of backups whereas in fact the older ones will have been copied to tape & deleted. Apart from being misleading this must also be leaving redundant data in the system/control tables & I'd prefer not to have to look at increasing their size just because of this. Anyone got any tips? Thanks very much to the guys who have responded to my previous 2 questions, being new to SQL I certainly appreciate the help.

Failing Backup Jobs

Dec 14, 2005

I have a DB Maintenance plan created that performs optimizations, integrity checks, and a database backup. The optimizations and integrity checks work fine, but the backup job fails. The backup job is to write the .bak file to a network share.
When I change the owner of the job to "sqluser", the job fails at step 0 withe the following error:
The job failed. Unable to determine if the owner (rsnsqluser) of job DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'Online Database Server Maintenance Plan' has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'rsnsqluser'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 8198)).
Checked with the system admin for this server and sqluser has priviledges to do everything, including write to the network share.

So, now I change the owner of the same maintenance job from sqluser to "sa". I now get this error:
Executed as user: RSNsqluser. sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.

Checked the settings for MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT in Control Panel. Everything seems to be in order according to the other threads I have read.

For grins, I tried to ensure the sqluser password on the SQL Server Agent was correct. When I try to enter the new password I get this:
sql server agent startup account could not be verified
I click yes (it asks if I want to continue anyway).
Is the password not being registered properly in the agent?

One other thing, the sqluser user is listed under Security|Logins as connecting with Windows Authentication. We have several other servers that are set up the same and work fine. What am I missing? I'm pulling my hair out!

Sql Server Backup Jobs Hanging

Oct 4, 2007

The backup jobs on one of our sql servers started hanging. The job appears to be complete because the backups are on the disk but the job never completes when viewed in the activity manager. sqlmaint.exe had numerous instances running all night long but the job never completes.

sql server 2000 standard edition sp3a
Windows server 2000

The jobs on this server have run successfully for well over a year and just recently they started hanging. We've done everything short of reboot the server. We've restarted the agent, shut down the sqlmaint.exe but alas nothing we do lets the job complete.

Other jobs that are not back up related are working as they should.

There is plenty of disk space.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance because we are lost as to the cause and resolution.

Maintenance Back Up Plan Not Deleting Prior Backup

Apr 25, 2001

I have a maintenance plan set to back up my 2 primary databases, one about 1 GB, the other about 2GB. I have about 4 GB available on the back up drive. I have set it to delete old backups more than 1 minute old. Problem is, the first night it works fine, the second night it sometimes it refuses to delete the old and therefore does not have enough space to complete the new back-up. Does anyone run into this before? Does it complete both back-ups THEN erase the old, in which case I need to have about 6GB available? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It can be going along fine for weeks then stop working. Any info or links to how this is supposed to work would help.

SQL 2005 Maintenance Cleanup Task Is Not Deleting Files On Remote File Share

Jan 16, 2008

I have the following issue with Maintenance plan backups that work for BAK DIF and TRN to a remote server share.
When I try and remove the old files with a clean up task I get an error and the files don't get deleted.

The version is as follows
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on
Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

The error result is as follows,

Failed-1073548784) Executing the query "EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file
0,N'\\EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1\BACKUPS\ABCD_BACKUP\ABC_DAILY\ABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'" failed with the following error: "xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The
system cannot find the file specified.'". Possible failure reasons: Problems
with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set
correctly, or connection not established correctly.

The maintenance plan seems to be adding extra "" though when i enter the
code directly in a query i get same error.

Query:

EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1BACKUPSABCD_BACKUPABC_DAILYABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'

Error:

xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The system cannot find the file specified.'

The servers belong to the same domain and are using the same Service account which has all the necessary rights to the share and the file directory location. The backups work but i get the error on the cleanup task.

Trying to figure out how to get the Cleanup task to delete old files. The same happens for all file extensions and I have tried other locations with simpler file paths same error.

Scott

Is There A MS SQL Backup Tool That Will Zip Or Compress The Backup Files?

Feb 27, 2007

Currently we use a SQL maintenance plan to do a full backup of all our databases daily (about 40 databases on our production server).  As you can imagine, this eats up disk space quickly so currently we manually zip the backup files and/or move them to an archive drive.  I considered writing an application to walk through the backup folder structure and zip any .bak file it finds, but I know there are some third party tools out there that will backup/restore a MS SQL database.
I was wondering if any of these also zip the backups once they are created.  Any recommendations or suggestions are welcome.
