Calculating The Record Size.

Feb 8, 2000

How do I calculate the Record size? I mean the Row size for each table.
I heard that there are formulas to do that and the calculation is different for Fixed lenght Columns and Variable length Columns.

I need to calculate the record size for nearly 500 tables.This will help me to decide on the DISk capacities.

Suggest me if any scipts or calculations already available.

Thanks in advance.

Calculating The Size Of A Table In A Db

Aug 10, 2006

If I have a database with a list of tables is there a way to calculate the size of each table individually and
then calculate the size all the tables. If you have 1 table with say 10 rows and 3 columns and the width of the
columns are of variable length you could do something like

( column1width + column2width + column3width ) * No.of Rows = Tablesize

So my question is can I reference the column width of different columns in a
table using sql ?

Another issue is that some of the columns are different datatypes so I should be taking that
into consideration as well.

From searching the internet so far I have seen little on SQL showing how to
reference column width in a table.

Calculating Row Size Including Blobs

Jul 20, 2005

I've seen plenty of posts regarding the estimation of table size,usually in the processing of planning for server storage needs.Well, I've got a different problem. I need to know how much data eachof our Customers are using in a Database. (1 SQL DB stores multiplecustomers).Basically, I want to be able to say: Customer A: 45.5 MB, Customer B:655 MB.So, how can I ask SQL Server how much data each Row in each table istaking up? I want to be able to calculate nightly the total size, so Iwould take each row in each table that belong to the customer, and addall the sizes together. I want to take into account blobs that arestoring images and PDF files also.Thanks in advance,Jesse Wolgamott

Ineed creation of table with around 11000 bytes in the record (Summationof precision of all the columns). And more over, I do not want to looseany data (truncation) in inert operation to keep on the whole recordsize to 8060B.Thanks a lot in advance.Ramakrishna.

SELECT c.name AS column_name
,c.column_id
,t.name AS type_name
,c.max_length
,c.precision
,c.scale
FROM sys.columns AS c
JOIN sys.types AS t ON c.user_type_id=t.user_type_id
WHERE c.object_id = OBJECT_ID('dbo.bloqueos_2005')

How To Calculate Average Row Size Of A Record.

Apr 22, 2008

 I want to calculate average row size of a record. By based on this i want to add some more columns into an existing table. Here is my table structureCREATE TABLE patient_procedure(    proc_id int IDENTITY(1,1) CONSTRAINT proc_id_pri_key PRIMARY KEY,    patient_id int NULL,    surgeon_name varchar(40) NOT NULL,    proc_name varchar(20) ,    part_name varchar(30),    wth_contrast int ,    wthout_contrast int ,    wth_wthout_contrast int,    xray_part varchar(60),    arth_area varchar(30),    others varchar(30) ,    cpt varchar(20) ,    procedure_date smalldatetime NOT NULL,    mraloperrun varchar(20),CONSTRAINT patientid_foreign_key FOREIGN KEY(patient_id)    REFERENCES dbo.patient_information (Patient_id)) Now i got a requirement that i have to add two more procedures with different columns.The columns overall size is 195 bytes.I can place those two procedures as seperate tables. I dont want to do that becuase of front end requirements.Here the problem is when the user enters these two procedures information remaining fields will store the  null value. I know that when we store the null values into corresponding columns min of 1 byte will be occupied. Please suggest me that shall i include these columns into the above table. If i add these columns is performance will be decreased or not. Waiting for valuable suggestions.

In other words: do MS SQL 2005 records have always constant size (total size of all columns max sizes) or real size of record depends on actual size of inserted data?

Error - Output Param - SP - Size Property Has An Invalid Size Of 0

Nov 14, 2007

Using C#, SQL Server 2005, ASP.NET 2, in a web app, I've tried removing the size from parameters of type NCHAR, NVARCHAR, and VARCHAR.  I'd rather just send a string and let the size of the parameter in the SP truncate any extra chars if need be. I began getting the error below, and eventually realized it happened only with output parameters, as in the code snippet below.String[3]: the Size property has an invalid size of 0.   par = new SqlParameter("@BusinessEntity", SqlDbType.NVarChar);  par.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;  cmd.Parameters.Add(par);  cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();What's the logic behind this? Is there any way around it other than either finding out what the size should be, or assigning a size larger than would ever be needed? ThanksMike Thomas

Best Practice For Data Size/Log Size Ratio

Jul 23, 2005

Just wanted to know what is a general rule of thumb when determining log file space against a database's data file.We allow our data file for our database to grow 10%, unlimited. We do not allow our log file to autogrow due to a specific and poorly written process (which we are in a three month process of remove) that can balloon the log file size.Should it be 10% of the Data file, i.e. if the Date file size is 800MB the log file should be 8MB?I realize there are a myraid of factors that go against file size but a general starting point would be nice.ThanksJeff--Message posted via http://www.sqlmonster.com

Ways To Make This Work: Several Selectable Related Record For One Main Record.

Apr 6, 2007

Hey all!

Sorry for the less then descriptive post title but I didn't find a better way to describe it. I'm developing an app in the express editions of VB and SQLserver. The application is a task/resource scheduler. The main form will have a datepicker or weekly overview and show all tasks scheduled per day. The problem is, I've got one or more people assigned to tasks and I wonder what's the best way to design this. Personally, I'd go for one Task table, a People table and a table that provides a link between them (several record per task, one for each person assigned linking TaskID and PplID). However, I don't see a nice way of showing this data to the end user, allowing him to edit/add etc on ONE screen.

To fix that the only way I see is just add columns to the Task table for every person with select boxes. This way everything can be done on one simple screen. This obviously does present some future issues.

On top of this, which people are available on a day varies and there should be an option to allow a user to set who is available on a specific day. Which would lead me to my first idea and add another table that would provide this. but then I'm having design issues again for the form.

I'm kinda stuck atm, can anyone shed some light on this. I'm sure there is an elegant way of doing this but I'm failing at finding it.

Thanks in advance,

Johan

Query Timeouts When Updating A Record Retrieved Through A Websphere JDBC Datasource - Possible Record Locking Problem

Apr 7, 2008

Hi,

We're running a Sage CRM install with a SQL Server 2000 database at the back end. We're using the Sage web services API for updating data and a JDBC connection to retrieve data as it's so much quicker.

If I retrieve a record using the JDBC connection and then try and update the same record through the web services, the query times out as if the record is locked for updates. Has anyone experienced anything similar or know what I'm doing wrong? If I just use DriverManager.getConnection() to establish the connection instead of the datasource, and then continue with the same code I don't get these record locking problems. Please find more details below.

Thanks,
Sarah

The JDBC provider for the datasource is a WebSphere embedded ConnectJDBC for SQL Server DataSource, using an implementation type of 'connection pool datasource'. We are using a container managed J2C authentication alias for logging on.

This is running on a Websphere Application Server v6.1.

Code snippet - getting the record thru JDBC:

DataSource wsDataSource = serviceLocator.getDataSource("jdbc/dsSQLServer");
Connection wsCon = wsDataSource.getConnection();

// wsCon.setAutoCommit(false); //have tried with and without this flag - same results

Statements stmt = wsCon.createStatement();

String sql = "SELECT * FROM Person where personID = 12345";
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(sql);

if(rs.next()){
System.out.println(rs.getString("lastName"));
}

if (rs != null){
rs.close();
}
if (stmt != null) {

stmt.close();
}
if (wsCon != null) {

wsCon.close();
}

SSIS: Multi-Record File Extract With 9 Record Types

Feb 26, 2008

I am attempting to create a multi-record file (as described in my last thread) and have found the following set of instructions very helpful:
http://vsteamsystemcentral.com/cs21/blogs/steve_fibich/archive/2007/09/25/multi-record-formated-flat-file-with-ssis.aspx

I have been able to create a sample file with two of my record types.

I now need to build on this further, because I have 9 record types in total that need to be extracted to a single flat file.

does anyone have any ideas how I might extend the example above to include more record types or know of another means of achieving this?

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.
