Can I Recover From The Database Files?

Jul 23, 2005

Howdy all -

I am *not* a DBA, so please bear with me. A client's Windows 2000
server went belly up yesterday afternoon after getting updates from
Windows Update. Wouldn't come up at all any more. I broke the mirror
for the OS, rebuilt the Windows 2000 installation, and installed MS-SQL
2000 and SP3 so that now the server is configured identically to what
it was before the crash.

Now I have the databases in D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL
ServerMSSQLData. D: is a mirror of the (now broken) old
installation. How can I get the databases into the active installation
of MS-SQL on the C: drive?

I was thinking of creating databases with the same name, shutting down
SQL and copying the files from D: to C: but that sounds too easy.

Any pointers greatly appreciated. Please remember that I am not an
experienced DBA, so use short words and speak slowly... :-)

Need To Recover MSDB From Ldf And Mdf Files - No Backups

Jan 29, 2008

My scenario -

-Dev server lost all its raid drives (which included user data/log files and ALL backups)
-Raid drives were removed from server, so we could try and recover the data (not sure why they had to remove them)
-Recreating the user db's isn't an issue, but I REALLY need to retrieve the jobs from the MSDB (developer was working on dts package for the last 2 months, but didn't check it in to VSS)
-Since the System DB's (model, master, msdb) were installed on the C drive, I was able to recover their mdf/ldf files.

So we build an new server and recreated the user db's.
How do I go about getting the jobs data from the msdb database?

I've tried the following -

Started SQL server with the -T3608 and was able to detach the MSDB database, but when I go to reattach using the mdf/ldf files from the other server I get the following error message.

Error 5172: The header for the file 'C:mssqldatamsdbdata.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The PageAudit property is incorrect

I've been doing some research and found a lot of great articles on how to RESTORE (from backup - dont have) or Rebuild (wipes out the data I'm looking for) the MSDB, but not how to replace it with only the ldf/mdf files....

Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

PS - All backups are now being copied to another server (lesson learned)

Recover Database Help!

Oct 6, 2005

Hello,

Is it possible to restore a SQL 2000 database with data from a transaction log?

I am not sure what happened to my database, all the data in the tables is gone. I generated a db script to create a duplicate database. I saved the .sql file on my local machine, separate from the db server, renamed the database name in the .sql file to a new database. Tested script in query analyzer for syntax, all was fine. Running it at this point would have created a new database with a different name, right?

Now my original database is empty. Can someone please provide me with information on getting my data back. Is there a way of using the transaction log to recover the data.

Thanks

How To Recover Sql Server Database Data

Jun 20, 2007

Hi all. A few days ago i installed mcafee total protection 2007 and that disabled my internet connection totally!! I couldn't fix it so i had to uninstall it. After uninstalling mcafee total protection 2007 still i couldn't join Internet!!

So i got mad and went and made repair installation of windows xp pro. After repair installation i couldn't activate it since Internet connection was still not working!! Unfortunately I can't even start sql server 2000 either!! could any one tell me what should i do in order to get access to all database tables and data that i had in sql server and make a back up. SQL 2012 :: Recover Database Without Log File?

Jul 10, 2015

Recently i got task from Senior DBA, as : Recover a database without LOG file Currently Data File is available.

Log file is also available, but shows size as 0 KB. Means Log file is corrupted.

Currently existing DB is shown as Offline Mode in SSMS.

So i got below link:

[URL]

When i tried 1st/2nd solution from above link, i got below message:The log cannot be rebuilt because there were open transactions/users when the database was shutdown, no checkpoint occurred to the database, or the database was read-only. This error could occur if the transaction log file was manually deleted or lost due to a hardware or environment failure.

To try that 3rd solution, I had to DELETE/Remove existing DB from SSMS, so i can create New DB with same name.

When i tried to delete Log file from Command Prompt, using below command, Windows replied that File is corrupted, so it cannot be deleted.

DEL /F /Q /A C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS2012MSSQLDATAMyDB.ldf

Meanwhile my Senior DBA brought DB in Recovery Pending mode.

So if i want to go for 3rd solution, then i need to DELETE file, But Windows is not allowing me.

SQL 2000: How To Recover Database In SUSPECT State.

Jan 10, 2005

Hi,

I've my database, testdb, ended up in Suspect state. The SQL log shows " I/O error 38(Reached the end of the file.) detected during read at offset xxxxxxxxxx in file '<path> estdb_Data.MDF'" during recovery. I do not have backup to restore the database from. So to run DBCC CHECKDB, I tried to put the database in emergency(bypass recovery) mode using

update sysdatabases set status = 32768 where name = 'testdb'

DBCC CHECKDB showed some allocation and consistency errors and suggested "repair_allow_data_loss" as minimum repair level.

Now to run

DBCC CHECKDB('testdb', repair_allow_data_loss)

I've to put database in SINGLE USER mode. For that I started SQL server by command

sqlservr.exe -c -m

Now when I try to run DBCC CHECKDB with repair option it says "Attempt to BEGIN TRANSACTION in database 'testdb' failed because database is in BYPASS RECOVERY mode."

So it seems I need to change the status of database such that it will allow me to repair it. If I try to reset the status, the database again goes in Suspect state and it seems DBCC commands don't run on database in Suspect state. Does anybody know how to recover the database in this state? Is there any other way to repair it?

Thanks in advance,
Yojana

How Do I Recover Database From A Detached Backup Device?

Nov 29, 2007

I ran into a problem today where I had to pull a backup file from an older tape. The file was originally is a backup that was stored in a device like :

EXEC sp_addumpdevice
'disk', --type
'c2000_BackupDevice', --logical name
'\UNCPathackupFile.bak' --physical location

I put the file from the tape on a File Server and then tried to create a new backup device pointing to the file. That's easy enough, but when I try to restore from it I get an device error saying it's offline.

How can I get that device attached to my server and then extract the backup files stored inside it?

Please advise b/c this is an interesting problem I hadn't anticipated and it argues that I should change my backup strategy .

Thanks for any advice/experience you can provide,
