Can I Find The Space Allocated For A Database W/ Query Analyzer Using 7.0?
May 15, 2001
My group is trying to ensure that there is a sufficient amount of cushion between the space allocated and the current size of a database. I know that I can check this using the Enterprise Manager. Is there a stored procedure or a systems table that holds this information. I know that sp_spaceused will give me the unallocated space, but i want the allocated space. Any suggestions?
Hi, all, I found that the SQL2000 EM does not show database space allcoated information, as well as tables and indexes size while SQL 7.0 does. Someitmes these information are fairly handy. is there any other easy ways to find out the same info from SQL2000 through Em, or elsewhere ?? Thanks Anthony
Hi.. I was doing a good maintenance on my DB and my trans log LDF keep growing until 30GB but my DB data file MDF is only 2GB. I found the two following method to reduce my log size.
Method 1: I used veritas to backup log file with truncate Method 2: I used the shrink database option in Enterprises manager to shrink it (file chosen=log , use default option)
After doing that, I found my LDF log file is still about the same size=27GB but when I see clearly, from the shrink database windows, the log spaced used reduced to only 100MB, the allocation log space is still 27GB. Why? How to make the LDF smaller to be the around the same size as the space used 100MB?
We have a database that doesn't seem to be growing on its own correctly (or seems like it isn't). This database has been running really slow for the last week and we think this may be whu
Current size is listed at 963mb while allocated size is 959mb. Trans log size is set to auto-grow and is allocated 4mb
Can we change that number on the fly, and also change the the growth settings without affecting the system?
Being a live system we obviously do not want any downtime, but believe this will help with our slowdown.
I have read a lot of topics about execution plan for query, but I got little. Please give me some help with examples for comparing different select statements to find the best efficient select statement.
I downloaded the trial version of sql server 2005. but after installation, I couldnt find the Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer. Any idea about that? Thanks.
Hey - I know that I can find space information about SQL Server. Allocated space, free space, used space, data space, etc... BUT is there a way that I can query how much total/available space is on the actual drive? For example, let's say that I have SQL installed on the D drive of a Server; i also have another application on that drive. I know that I can query how much room SQL Server is using, but can i query how much total/available space is on the drive? Any help appreciated.
The sp_spaceused proc seems to have been removed in 7.0? Dbcc sqlperf also seems to have been removed? Surely there must be a counterpart - which is? I like to have a script which shows the space usage especially on a table basis for a periodic report.
I am managing a sqlserver 6.5 database in my company. I get the message that the datafiles should be expanded but whenever I try to expand it the following message appears:
Could not find enough space on disks to extend the database. Meanwhile, I have about 6 gigabytes free space on my disks. Please help me out. Thanks,
I've production sql server 7 sp3 on windows NT. I had a 8GB data file ofwhich 5GB were used and 3GB were unused. I wanted to take back the unused3GB.So I did the following with EM GUI:1. I tried to "truncate fre space from end of the file". Didn't truncatethe file. I believe there was no empty space at the end of the file.2. Next I chose the option to "shrink file to 5GB". And to my horror thedata file instead of taking just 5GB took the empty spaces also and the sizeof the used data file went to 8GB.Any idea what's going on?TIA,SP
I am using the below script to get space alerts  and now i am interested in sending alerts  if for any drive space available is Less than 10% or 15%.. how to convert beelow code to find in %Â
How Do I use an ODBC database in Query Analyzer? Presumably I couldthen join a table from another database to a SQL table to either pullinformation together or pass information back and forth between thetwo databases.Thanks.
Hi there, I have installed Sql server 2005 developer on my machine which already has a Sql server 2000 installed on. Now i am trying to query the Sqlserver 2005 data(Ex: from Person.Address located in AdventureWorks database) in Sqlserver 2000 query analyzer: When i try as Select * from Address it said invalid object. But when i explored AdventureWorks database in the Management studio i see it as Person.Address!!! i don't understand what is a Person in Person.Address??? any clues on this? So as a test when i ran select * from Person.Address it did work and i saw the results in query analyzer. Can any one help me understand about this confusion? Thanks-L
We are running SQL 2000 SP3 on a Win2K server with multiple user databases. Our current problem is the ability of users to view the database objects via the native tools.
Example: User Bob Bob has the following rights: DB A – datareader/datawriter DB B – datareader/datawriter DB C – datareader DB D – datareader DB E – datareader/datawriter
The user has no builder rights or server roles.
In Enterprise Manager, the user can not see any databases. In Query Analyzer, the user can only see DB A, B, and C. Anyone seen this problem before and/or have suggestions?
Hi All, Please let me know how we can need to run “SELECT” statement (in SQL SERVER query analyzer) for a table in different database without going/loading DATABASE B (i.e. without running “USE B”) e.g. we are in a database “A” and we need to run “SELECT” command for a table in Database say “B” without going/loading (i.e. without running “USE B”) the Database “B” Thanks in Advance J
How can I delete duplicate entries from tables in my database using Query Analyzer, as there are many duplicate entries in my tables, I want to delete them.
I am using SQL Server 2000.I have created a new database in Query Analyzer but I cannot see it inEnterprise Manager.I then created a new database in Enterprise Manager, but I can't see it inQuery Analyzer. How do I get these applications to see the databases that the other creates? Thanks,Greg
Please provide some help regarding the "Interface Defining Error: IID_IDBDataSourceAdmin" error while trying to create a SDF database using Query Analyzer on a Windows CE 5.0 mobile device (Symbol MC3000).
Error: 0x80004005 E_FAIL Native Error: 28558 Description: SQL Mobile encountered problems when creating database [,,,,]
PS. Basically I have developed a mobile application that programmatically creates the database, the code worked on a similar device (Win CE 50), trying to run the application on a new device resulted in database creation errors. I tried creating a test database manually .. and this is what I got.
Browsing MSDN or searching on the Forum did not help.
I'm trying to determine how much space some tables use (SQL2000), and I found 2 suggestions posted earlier, but can't get them to work for me.
The first was "Right click on the DB in Enterprise Manager, select view then taskpad."
When I try that, I get some of the tables displayed with the info I want, but I can't see them all and can't scroll down beyond the first 22 tables in the database.
It says "command copleted successfully, but where does the output to this go ?? Is there something other than "print" I should use ? The grid pane is empty.
I need a query that checks each row in a column (hardness) to see if the last character is a "space". The column holds numbers (73.45) but is a varchar 50 type. It will always be the 5th character but it would be nice to not make this assumption. Please help!! Thanks.
