Checking All Views For Errors After Upgrade

Jul 20, 2005

I just upgraded from SQL 7.0 to 2000. I know I have an error with the
CAST and CONVERT functions I used in some views. Anyway, is there a
sp I can run that will run all my views and give me back a list of
those which have an error instead of going through each view one by
one?

Thanks.

Anyone Else Have Errors When Checking Out SSIS Package From SourceSafe Or TFS?

Aug 10, 2007

I get errors when I check out an SSIS package from source control (both Source Safe and TFS) relating to the connection objects where I was not the original developer who checked it in. Is there a solution to this other than altering the connection loginpassword for every connection object in the package before deploying?

Converter And Chunk Errors After SSRS Database Upgrade

Jun 1, 2007

Following upgrade to SSRS2005, Reporting Services worked EXCEPT from within applications or from scheduled jobs. Running reports from application-generated URL€™s produced the following error: €˜An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details€™. These same reports, however, ran perfectly from within SSRS. After running them once from Reporting Services, they subsequently run without problem when called by applications or jobs.

Examples of these errors include the following (stack traces available if needed):

ReportingServicesService!runningjobs!13!5/27/2007-01:57:23:: i INFO: Adding: 1 running jobs to the database
ReportingServicesService!chunks!f!05/27/2007-01:58:34:: e ERROR: LockSnapshotForUpgrade: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

Log entries below correspond to the following attempts to run a specific report.

ENF_Comprehensive_Report 5/31/2007 9:43:37 AM rsInternalError
(one of many user attempts to run from app after upgrade)
ENF_Comprehensive_Report 5/31/2007 10:50:57 AM rsSuccess
(first successful run after upgrade; run from within SSRS)
ENF_Comprehensive_Report 5/31/2007 11:09:59 AM rsSuccess
(first successful run by user from application)

It appears that after the upgrade Reporting Services was attempting to use non-existent or invalid chunks and snapshots to satisfy application or job originated requests. When first called from within SSRS, the old chunk was accessed but then appears to have been ignored, with subsequent calls running without a chunk. Our workaround for the problem was to manually run each of our 200+ reports from within SSRS to €˜initialize€™ them for applications and jobs.

Over 200 reports deployed, half of which are run by users from within applications.

SSRS upgrade process: backup up existing databases, settings, keys; uninstall SSRS2000; perform €˜files only€™ install of SSRS2005 to existing SQL2000 instance; manually configure SSRS2005 and IIS; upgrade reporting services databases.

Are Embedded Views (Views Within Views...) Evil And If So Why?

Apr 3, 2006

Fellow database developers,I would like to draw on your experience with views. I have a databasethat includes many views. Sometimes, views contains other views, andthose views in turn may contain views. In fact, I have some views inmy database that are a product of nested views of up to 6 levels deep! The reason we did this was.1. Object-oriented in nature. Makes it easy to work with them.2. Changing an underlying view (adding new fields, removing etc),automatically the higher up views inherit this new information. Thismake maintenance very easy.3. These nested views are only ever used for the reporting side of ourapplication, not for the day-to-day database use by the application. We use Crystal Reports and Crystal is smart enough (can't believe Ijust said that about Crystal) to only pull back the fields that arebeing accessed by the report. In other words, Crystal will issue aSelect field1, field2, field3 from ReportingView Where .... eventhough "ReportingView" contains a long list of fields.Problems I can see.1. Parent views generally use "Select * From childview". This meansthat we have to execute a "sp_refreshview" command against all viewswhenever child views are altered.2. Parent views return a lot of information that isn't necessarilyused.3. Makes it harder to track down exactly where the information iscoming from. You have to drill right through to the child view to seethe raw table joins etc.Does anyone have any comments on this database design? I would love tohear your opinions and tales from the trenches.Best regards,Rod.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Make Sproc Return Errors For Underlying Table Errors

Jul 1, 2015

I recently updated the datatype of a sproc parameter from bit to tinyint. When I executed the sproc with the updated parameters the sproc appeared to succeed and returned "1 row(s) affected" in the console. However, the update triggered by the sproc did not actually work.

The table column was a bit which only allows 0 or 1 and the sproc was passing a value of 2 so the table was rejecting this value. However, the sproc did not return an error and appeared to return success. So is there a way to configure the database or sproc to return an error message when this type of error occurs?

Parent Package Reports Failure On Errors, But No Errors In Log

Jul 31, 2006

I have a parent package that calls child packages inside a For Each container. When I debug/run the parent package (from VS), I get the following error message: Warning: The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (3) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors.

It appears to be failing while executing the child package. However, the logs (via the "progress" tab) for both the parent package and the child package show no errors other than the one listed above (and that shows in the parent package log). The child package appears to validate completely without error (all components are green and no error messages in the log). I turned on SSIS logging to a text file and see nothing in there either.

If I bump up the MaximumErrorCount in the parent package and in the Execute Package Task that calls the child package to 4 (to go one above the error count indicated in the message above), the whole thing executes sucessfully. I don't want to leave the Max Error Count set like this. Is there something I am missing? For example are there errors that do not get logged by default? I get some warnings, do a certain number of warnings equal an error?

Thanks,

Lee

Recompiling Views That Reference Other Views

Jun 28, 2007

Hello.

Newbie here. I've only been using SQL for about a year now and have some minor questions about sql objects that reference other objects.

We have some views which reference other views in the joins. I will call one the primary view and the one being referenced in the joins as the secondary view.

Recently we made changes to the secondary view.

After which the primary views which referenced it would not work because of this change and had to be 'refreshed' by using drop/create scripts which essentially just dropped it and recreated the exact same view. I do not recall the exact error message that was returned other than it seemed to suggest that it could no longer see the secondary view since it had been changed. Nothing in the primary view was changed in any way, just the secondary.

Some here where I work have suggested off hand that this was a recompile of the primary view because the contents of the secondary changed.

My questions are:

1. Exactly why did this happen and is there a proper name for it when it does?

2. The same problem does not seem to occur when we have stored procedures referencing views in the joins which had just been changed. Why is that?

Thanks for any help on the matter. I greatly appreciate it.

Upgrade Advisor Post-upgrade

Dec 6, 2006

Greetings,

I have a client whose DBA upgraded their SQL 2000 database to SQL 2005. They still have it running in 8.0 compatibility mode, for various reasons, and would like me to help them develop a migration strategy to get them to full 9.0 compatibility.

My question is: can I run the Upgrade Advisor on a SQL 2005 engine database running in 8.0 compatibility mode and get anything useful? I already know there will be some issues with existing DTS packages but it would be nice to catch any other issues in advance.

I know that the Upgrade Advisor was run before the upgrade took place but to my knowledge the report was not saved and none of the recommendations were followed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Lon

Views Dependent On Other Views

Mar 14, 2006

Hello There,I'm trying to create a view that has calculations dependent oncalculations, where the problem resides is that each time I make acalculation I must create an intermediate view so I can reference aprevious calculation.for example lets say I have my_table that has columns a & b. now I wanta view that has a & b, c = a + b, and d = c + 1.this is grossly simplified, the calculations I actually use are fairlycomplex and copying / pasting them is out of the question.so what I have is my_view_a which makes column c, and my my_view_finalwhich makes column d (however, in my real application I have 5 of theseviews, a/b/c/d/e/)is there anyway I can consolidate all these views into one? I wasthinking of using a stored procedure with temp tables or somethingalong those lines.I just which I can use the aliases that I create for c in d in onestep.any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Checking For PK

Feb 10, 2004

Hi,

I want to assign a list columns to be the PK on a table. I don't know what this list of columns would be.How do I go about figuring that?

Sample Data

Col1...Col2...Col3..Col4
1...........2.......A......X
1...........2........B.....X
1...........2.......A......Y

As you can see Col1 & Col2 ONLY do not make up the PK. I need to include Col3 as well. My concern is I am not sure if I have a row like..
1...........2.......A......X reapeated lower down the order. So how do I figure the PK out?

Thanks

Checking For Row Existence

Nov 1, 2006

Can someone show me some C# code for detecting if a SQL row exists or not?  This seems like a very typical action and I cannot for the life of me find a tutorial online that explains this step.  In my code I'm either going to INSERT or UPDATE a record.  I tried sending a SELECT command through a ExecuteNonQuery, but only got -1 as a response.  Apparently ExecuteNonQuery does not work with SELECT.  I then saw that T-SQL has an EXISTS keyword, but I cannot see anyway to use that from within C#.So...can anyone share the typical code they use to identify if a row exists or not within a database.  I guess I was execting there to be some method available to do this sort of thing.

I've forgotten the character set that I've chosen when I was installing the SQL Server 7. Is there a way to check?

I'm currently using US English version of Windows NT4 and SQL7. But interestingly, all the data is in Japanes characters. It's actually for a Japanese website, and the front-end application is written in ASP. I remember reading somewhere that it is impossible to do certain type of sorting (by some particular order for the Japanese language) as it is limited by the choice of the language of the NT OS.

The type of sorting that I'm looking at is the grouping of 5-characters. One example is in http://www.forest.impress.co.jp/aiueo.html

Would this be possible with my current setup? Or would it help if I migrate over to Windows 2000? (I'd rather not move to Japanese NT4)

Your feedback and advice would be very much appreciated!

Checking @@Error

Feb 20, 2003

Hi,

Just a brief question. I have a script which does a number of insert statements. What I would like to do is determine if the insert statements were all successful. Aside from checking @@ERROR after every insert, is there a way to check if all the insert statements completed successfully?

Thanks,

Jim

Checking For A Range

Aug 5, 2004

I want to do a check to see if a number falls within a range specified by the user. Basically, they enter in a min and max value and I return a hit if a number falls inbetween.

I have having trouble with my SQL statement:

Code:

SELECT DISTINCT *
FROM Table
WHERE ( (0=0)
AND
(min.value <= Table.Value <= max.value) )

(This isn't my actual code, but just the logic)

It will return all the results everytime. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could be missing here?

Thanks in advance!

Checking Job Status Using SQL-DMO

Jun 27, 2004

I have a question I hope someone can help me with.

My situation:
I have a single-step job in SQL Server, which runs a stored procedure, A. This stored procedure invokes another stored procedure, B. In B, one of the statements is a 'BACKUP DATABASE' command, and a database is backed up to a file.

The job is started by an application. Once started, the application then uses the SQL-DMO property CurrentRunStatus to periodically check the status of the job. When the property returns the value SQLDMOJobExecution_Idle (indicating the job has completed), the application code then continues processing, and attempts to access the .dat file produced by the 'BACKUP DATABASE' command.

My problem:
On occasion, the application will hit the problem where either the backup file cannot be located, or the file is still being locked by another process (Error=The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process).

Is anyone able to shed some light on this?

I assume that the job will only return a completed status after:
(a) both A and B have completed execution, and
(b) the BACKUP operation has completed

Is it possible that even though SQL Server indicates the job has finished, that the BACKUP operation still hasn't completely ended?

Thanks for any help,
Andrew

It's been a while!

This is going to sound ignorant but...
I had a look here http://support.microsoft.com/?id=321185

And one thing isn't clear. How doe you know if the 32-bit or 64-bit version was installed?

------------------------
Me: What do you want to know from your data warehouse?
Client: Err...Emm...Everything
Me: OK, that's great. That's all I need to know. I'll see you when it's done.

Way Of Checking To See If All SP's Work

Jul 25, 2007

Our System currently has on the upwards of 300 stored procedures in it.

We have SP's that call SP's that call SP's and sometimes a Stored Procedure will return 10 ResultSets which are used by .NET.

Some of our developers do not check other stored procedures when they modify the SP parameters, and in doing so break the system until the testers find it.

is there a way to run a command to check ALL the stored procedures to see if they work, they match the SP they're calling, etc?
