SQL Connection Over The Internet

Jul 11, 2001

Hello,

I am trying to upload a database (MS SQL 7) from my machine to a remote location (host company). This company has MS SQL Server 7 running in its machine, so they told me that all I had to do was to connect from my SQL Enterprise Manager. I am new to MS SQL, so I would appreciate if someone can help me to create a connection from Enterprise Manager to this remote SQL Server.

Thanx

Connection Sql Server Express 2005 Over Internet ?

May 24, 2007

Is it possible to connect to a sql server express over internet or not ?

- I am using a win2003 sp1 server. Freshly installed.
- The server is directly connected to internet.
- For the purpose of the test, I stopped the windows firewall and the IPSec service.
- I stopped SQL server Browser service.
- I find a free port (here : 1401)
- I activated TCP/IP protocol in SQL Server Configuration Manager, and I have selected 1401 as the TCP port in the IPAll sextion of TCP/IP protection (and I remove the '0' of the dynamic TCP Port).
- Restarted SQL server express...

In the sql server log, I get the message "Serveur Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 1401]"

But I never get an answer from the server.

sqlcmd -S ip_of_the_server, 1401 -U username -P password is working fine if launched on the server. But I always get a timeout error from any PC. Same with a telnet on port 1401.

Any idea ?

Seting Up Sql Server Express For Internet Connection

May 7, 2007

Hi

Im having some problems setting up sql server so that i can connect to it in my vb program over the internet.

Im using windows xp pro and have IIS installed and using sql server 2005 express SP2.

My setup is as follows:

from phonecable to router, from router to wireless access point and the wireless connects to my computer.

I have tried disabling the xp firewall, and in the sql server configurationi have set the port to 11001, which i have also opened in my router.

There should be a connection to the computer, cause i have succesfully set up an FTP server on a different port.

I have also enabled remote connections, both via TCP/IP and named pipes.

I have tried to use telnet on my IP adress with the port 11001, and it says that i cant create a connection..Are there other settings i should set to get this to work? This has been bugging me for a little while...

Checking If DB Connection Is Active Or Not

Aug 28, 2006

Hi,You all may be knowing that Connection.isClosed() does not tells usif the underying DB connection is active or not; it only checks ifConnection.close() had been previously called or not.One sure shot way to find out this is by executing some dummy SELECTquery and catching it via SQLException.This could be done in various DB's as follows:SELECT * from 1 (MS SQL)SELECT * from DUAL(Oracle)My question is what if you use some other DB , which is not famous asthe above.This could still be achieved by creating dummy table with one columnand querying it. One pitfall of doing this approach is we may not havecreate permissions to create table. Even if we have permissions tocreate table, you need to do the following, if you need to check DBConnection every time.a) Create Tableb) Use SELECT queryc) Drop tableYou may ask me why we need to use drop table. This is because, we cannot create many tables and keep them alive if we were to check (DBConn) it for 100 times. One way is we can use IF NOT EXISTS along withCreate table. Unfortunately, this command is not supported by all DBvendors. So, this is ruled out.One more way of doing is writing simple stored procedure that returnsplain constant. Unfortunatley the syntax for Stored procedures isdifferent for different DB Vendors.So, do we have a correct way of finding if DB connection is active,that would work on all DB's ?Fortunately, there is a way to do this.We could use Connection.getMetaData().getTables(null,null,null, null).We could use this way as this would surely get the number of tablespresent at that moment. How many tables are present in a DB will notbe cached as this may change dynamically. One disadvantage of usingthis approach is performance. What if a DB has 1000 tables, it tries toget the names of 1000 tables and it is performance hit.Is there a solution for this?. Yes, we can use getTables method byinvoking only against the SYSTEM table types. I am sure any DB willnot have many system tables.So, our call would be,Conn.getMetaData().getTables(null,null,null,new String[]{"SYSTEMTABLE"});The above statement is expected to give whether connection is active;if connection is not active, then it throws SQLException. And best partis it will work on all DB Drivers.What if some JDBC driver does not implement the above getTables() call,then we would get some AbstractMethodError that can be caught usingLinkageError. So, finally code for checking if connection is active ornot is as follows:try {ResultSet rs = conn.getMetaData().getTables(null,null,null,newString[]{"SYSTEM TABLE"});} catch (SQLException e) {conn.close();// use try catch block here to catch SQLException forConn.close();//call to open new DB connection.getNewConnection();}catch(LinkageError e){conn.close();// use try catch block here to catch SQLException forConn.close();//call to open new DB connection.getNewConnection();}}This limitation (if it can be called) is going to be fixed for JDBC4.0 implemented drivers(if they implement it in right way).Any comments on this would be appreciated.Regards,Venkata Narayana

Checking Server Connection Before A For Each Loop

Apr 9, 2008

I have a list of servers on a table, I take this list and pass to a for each loop container and that will grab some system information from each server that we give for our internal auditors.

The issue that I'm currently having with this package is that some times, 1 or 2 servers from the list are down and/or extremelly busy and it times out, either case causes the whole package to fail.

What I'm trying to do is, test the connection to the server prior passing the server name to the For Each Loop Container and log that information somewhere (Maybe a boolean field in a table), so then I check after the package finish and validate that the server was actually up or down.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Igor Santos

SQL 2000 Over The Internet

Jul 5, 2001

I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2000 using the enterprise manager, and I want to do it over the Internet. My server is in another country and I am using SQL authentication. When I try to make the connection I get a message of server does not exists or access denied. If I ping the server the ping is successful, I am using TCP/IP as protocol for the client, I am not behind any firewall, and the port 1433 is enabled and is the default. I imagine it has to be something with permissions but since I am using SQL validation it should work. Is there something else I have to change?

Who Can Help Me With Conection Over Internet?

Jan 11, 2006

Hi,
Now I really need you help. I have an application that needs to conect to a server
over the internet and I have change the MSQL port to 2015 cos the server even with a
firewall it has been attempt to be hacked. So I needed to change the port but my application
cannot conect to the server if I change it. If I left in the firewall 1433 and SQL it works fine
but once I change it to 2015 it doesnīt work.

Iīm using ADO conection as folow:

Variables string parameters:
01=password
02=user
03=database
04=server IP adress

"Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Password='+01+';Persist Security Info=True;User ID='+02+';Initial Catalog='+03+';Data Source='+04;"

Using this conection string I can conect to the server using 1433 port but if I change the port I get the folow message:

"[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied."

Iīd try to add the new port number to IP adress but it doesnīt work as (200.121.65.140:2015) and it return the folow message:

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (ParseConnectParams()).]Invalid connection.

What I need to know or to do? Please somebody help me cos I donīt know more what to do and my superiors need awnsers.
Thanks for attetion.

Authentication Across Internet

Jan 3, 2007

From what I have understood, Reporting Services could be configured to use Basic Authentication. In this way, a user can access a RS-server across the internet and he/she will be prompted for a valid username/password when trying to access.

However, from what I can understand this username and password will be sent uncrypted over the Internet (from the client machine to the RS-server), right?

My problem is, I need to give access to users acress the internet to a RS-server. The users uses all kind of operating systems (Windows, Linux, MacOS tec). And the communication needs to be encrypted.

How would you recommend me to implement security for this solution? I guess some kind of "Forms authentication" will have to be used? But how to make sure the data traffic is encrypted? And where do you recommend me to store the username and passwords? In an Active Directory on the server side, or in a separate database on the server side?

The accounts are very restrictive to check most of configurations.

What are possible pitfalls, configurations, security configurations and dangers,

Synchronization For PPC W/o Internet

Jan 6, 2006

Hi.. need some help!

     My problem is thus - I am looking for a
synchronization technique (between SQLCE and SQL Server 2000) for a PPC
which can not connect to the internet.
I am not sure at this stage if the device would even be equipped with a
network adapter.I
would be using RDA to sync with the database. The only problem is that I am unable to access IIS directly from the PDA.

    I did some research and found out that SQL CE Relay
is one way to achieve what I am looking for but Darren let me know that
Relay is outdated and might not be supported anymore. I tried working
with relay but in vain.

   I thought of using Pocket Access instead but Pocket Access
does not have the ability to handle the db I am using neither is it
being supported anymore.

   I am fast running out of ideas:(

   Could someone please suggest me alternatives or any available solution
to deal with the problem for a PPC with / without a network adapter.

      Thanks in advance!
