Variable Column Names

Mar 15, 2004

I am writing a stored procedure in which I have a query that selects the Headings of Columns from another table...
I want to then create a loop that will contain a variable with the value of the column heading and then set the column to a value of NULL...

Is there any way to accomplish this???

I thought about placing these values into a temp table...

This is what I have so far...

Declare @QueryX nvarchar(500)
Declare @FieldName varchar(20)

Create Table #UpdateRejDoc
(
Abbreviation varchar(20)
)
Insert into #UpdateRejDoc
Select Abbreviation
From tbl_Titles
left JOIN tbl_TitleRouting on tbl_Titles.Title_ID = tbl_TitleRouting.Title_ID
Where tbl_TitleRouting.Application_ID = @Application_ID
While Exists (Select Abbreviation from #UpdateRejDoc)
Begin

Set @QueryX = 'Update DBLandfillUser.tbl_ObjectApprovals' +
'@AppName + Set @FieldName = null Where object_id =' + Cast(@object_id as VarChar(20))
End

Dynamic Column Names In Select Statement

Oct 13, 2001

I have a quick question on SQL Server. Lets say I have table Order which has column names OrderId, CustomerName, OrderDate and NumberofItems. To select the OrderID values from the table I say
Select OrderId from Order.
But in the select if I want the column name to be variable how do I do it. I tried the following code through a stored procedure.

declare @order_id nvarchar(10)
select @order_id = 'OrderID'
SELECT @order_id from Order.

The code above gave me the string "OrderID" as many times as there were rows in the table but I could never get the actuall values in the OrderId column. Can you please send me some ideas or code where I can get values from the column names and at the same time change the column name dynamically.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Dynamic Column Names For Insert Statement?

Apr 9, 2015

I would like to provide the names of columns in an insert statement from a schema table, so that when running through a number of Bus Rule checks I can reference the schema table and only maintain the columns in the schema table rather than maintain named columns in multiple insert statements. So my query for one check looks like below. I'm using dynamic sql to execute the insert statement. My question is, is there a better way or different way to do this without using dynamic sql? Ie, Is there a way that I can use the columns parameter like this instead?

Insert
('+@columns+',KickoutID) Values('+@columns+',1);

Dynamic code:

Declare @columns as nvarchar(max);
Declare @InvSQL as nvarchar(max);
SELECT @columns =
STUFF ((
SELECT ', [' + name + ']'
FROM syscolumns WHERE id = OBJECT_ID('dbo.table_pvt')

[Code] ....

Using A Variable To Specify Table Column In Sql Statement??

Feb 6, 2008

Hello everyone,
I'm still quite new ASP.net, Visual Web Developer 2008, and SQL. It has been a fun learning experience so far. Anyways, the site I am designing needs to allow its users to extensively search several different databases (MS SQL databases).  I have followed many of the tutorials and have found it rather easy to add table adapters, gridviews and other data features that use basic SQL Select statements. One of the major database tables contains several columns which I would like to include as a search parameters from a drop down list. I was wondering if there is any way I can write a select which will pass a variable to be used as a column name to the statement?  For example:
SELECT DATE, GAME, EXACT, @COLNAMEFROM HistoryWHERE @COLNAME = @SOMEVARIABLE
This obviously doesnt work, but thats the gist of what I want to do. Any suggestions? I need this to be simple as possible, Most everything I'm doing is done through the visual design mode. Im still slow to learn C# and apply it in the codebehind files unless I have very detailed step by step instuctions.
Thanks
Scott

Random Selection From Table Variable In Subquery As A Column In Select Statement

Nov 7, 2007

Consider the below code: I am trying to find a way so that my select statement (which will actually be used to insert records) can randomly place values in the Source and Type columns that it selects from a list which in this case is records in a table variable. I dont really want to perform the insert inside a loop since the production version will work with millions of records. Anyone have any suggestions of how to change the subqueries that constitute these columns so that they are randomized?

SET NOCOUNT ON

Declare @RandomRecordCount as int, @Counter as int
Select @RandomRecordCount = 1000

Declare @Type table (Name nvarchar(200) NOT NULL)
Declare @Source table (Name nvarchar(200) NOT NULL)
Declare @Users table (Name nvarchar(200) NOT NULL)
Declare @NumericBase table (Number int not null)

Set @Counter = 0

while @Counter < @RandomRecordCount
begin
Insert into @NumericBase(Number)Values(@Counter)
set @Counter = @Counter + 1
end

Insert into @Type(Name)
Select 'Type: Buick' UNION ALL
Select 'Type: Cadillac' UNION ALL
Select 'Type: Chevrolet' UNION ALL
Select 'Type: GMC'

Insert into @Source(Name)
Select 'Source: Japan' UNION ALL
Select 'Source: China' UNION ALL
Select 'Source: Spain' UNION ALL
Select 'Source: India' UNION ALL
Select 'Source: USA'

Insert into @Users(Name)
Select 'keith' UNION ALL
Select 'kevin' UNION ALL
Select 'chris' UNION ALL
Select 'chad' UNION ALL
Select 'brian'

select
1 ProviderId, -- static value
'' Identifier,
'' ClassificationCode,
(select TOP 1 Name from @Source order by newid()) Source,
(select TOP 1 Name from @Type order by newid()) Type

from @NumericBase

Integration Services :: Pass Single Column Of Values From Successful Merge Join To EXECUTE Statement

May 7, 2015

How do I pass a single column of values from a successful merge join to an EXECUTE SQL statement so it can be used with an "IN" criteria of the WHERE clause?  Here's an example of my update statement with two random key values:

UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK IN ("XYZ123", "DEF890")

Is this even possible in SSIS, or am I better off using a loop and running the update EXECUTE SQL Statement for each individual key value, as in the following example?

UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK = "XYZ123"
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK = "DEF890"

Looking For A Way To Refer To A Package Variable Within Any Transact-SQL Code Included In Execute SQL Or Execute T-SQL Task

Apr 19, 2007

I'm looking for a way to refer to a package variable within any
Transact-SQL code included in either an Execute SQL or Execute T-SQL
task. If this can be done, I need to know the technique to use -
whether it's something similar to a parameter placeholder question
mark or something else.

FYI - I've been able to successfully execute Transact-SQL statements
within the Execute SQL task, so I don't think the Execute T-SQL task
is even necessary for this purpose.

SQL Variable And IS Variable In Execute SQL Task

Jan 3, 2007

Hi,

I have an Execute SQL Task (OLE DB Connnection Manager) with a SQL script in it. In this script I use several SQL variables (@my_variable). I would like to assign an IS variable ([User::My_Variable]) to one of my SQL variables on this script. Example:

DECLARE @my_variable int

, <several_others>

SET @my_variable = ?

<do_some_stuff>

Of course, I also set up the parameter mapping.

However, it seems this is not possible. Assigning a variable using a ? only seems to work in simple T-SQL statements.

I have several reasons for wanting to do this:

- the script uses several variables, several times. Not all SQL variables are assigned via IS variables.

- For reading and mainenance purposes, I prefer to pass the variable only once. Otherwise every time the script changes u need to keep track of all questionmarks and their order.

- Passing the variable once also makes it easier to design the script outside IS using Management Studio.

- This script only does preparation for the actual ETL, so I prefer to keep it in one task instead of taking it apart to several consecutive Execute SQL Tasks.

- I prefer to use the OLE DB connection manager because it's a de facto standard here.

Could anyone help me out with the following questions:

- Is the above possible?

- If so, how?

- If not, why not?

- If not, what would be the best way around this problem?

Thanx in advance,

Pipo

Then next month I will create atable called customer_20051031. Does anyone know if there is a betterway to do it? like using a macro variable for the month-end date? Noweverytime I have to change the table name in every single update step, which would cause errors if I forget to change one of them. By using amacro, I would only need to change it once. Thanks!

Field Names From SQL Statement

Mar 9, 2004

Is there anyway to determine what the resulting Field Names are going to be from a SQL Statement?

For example:
SELECT TABLE1.FIELD1, TABLE1.FIELD2, TABLE1.FIELD3, TABLE2.FIELD1 AS ANOTHERNAME
FROM TABLE1 INNER JOIN TABLE2 ON TABLE1.PK = TABLE2.FK

resulting field names:
FIELD1
FIELD2
FIELD3
ANOTHERNAME

Seems easy enough splitting all values before "FROM" by comma and doing some manipulation to remove table names and anything before the word "AS". However, it gets more difficult when you have complex CASE statements embedded in you query that may also contain commas.

Just a shot in the dark because I don't know if anyone has already done something like this before.

Thank you in advance,

Jeff

Xml File And Automatically Parse NODE Names Into A Memory Variable Table

Sep 13, 2014

Ok I am faced with working with XML on a regular basis, which is fine.

DECLARE @ViewSN INT
IF NOT EXISTS (select null from tblviews where viewcode = 'loadAtTerm') --<workflowEventType>loadAtTerminal</workflowEventType>
insert into tblviews (ViewName,Description,OutBoundForm,StoredProcSN,TriggersReply,ViewCode,DispXactLayer,DispXactViewType,DispXfcTag,Comments)
select 'QC:WF-LoadAtTerminal','This View Corresponds to the XML for loadAtTerminal in Omnitracs Workflow','0',NULL,'0', 'loadAtTerm','MCOM','MCOM',NULL,NULL

[code]...

What would be really useful is to be able to present any xml file and automatically parse the NODE names into a memory variable table and then the fields of each node in another.
