Create Package For Multiple Table Insert From Flat File Source

Hello Guys,
I am working in one company and currently I am assigned to new project for Data Migration from company X to our company Y using SSIS. I am totally new and i just completed 5 tutorial which was gien on MSDN website.
Basically client is going to send us first flat file with 1 million records with Header, Detail and Trailer records.
I want to create a Package in such a way that it dumps all this first load into 7 to 8 different tables at a time.
we also have to include functionlity for validation and error check.
On successfull load error file should only return Header and Trailer but no detail records.
If there are any errors then error file should contain Header, Detail records which were unable to load plus trailer which we have to sent back to client.
When 2nd file comes that time we have to check whether this is new records or change (update) one depending on Flag which tells it.
This is basically high level idea of my Package what i need to create. If u guys have any question then let me know.
I know you guys are very experienced one. Anyone of you please give me some detail idea on it I would really appricate it.
I have very limited time line for it.
There is a small problem encountered while creating a package in sql server 2005. Actually i am using a flat file which has 820 rows and 2 columns which are seperated by line feed(for ROW) and tab(for COLUMN).after importing i found that ther are only 800 rows imported into the table. Ather verifying the input file i found out that there are some null values in the second column so there is no line feed for those values. Can anyone please help me how to give multiple delimiters for the same input flat file.
I created a SSIS package, added Script task. created data flow task programatically, trying to add a flat file source component programatically. stuck at this point.
my goal is to add flat file source component to the data flow task and insert into a table in sql server using oledb destination component all programatically.
I have a data task with the following requirements: 1) Run query against database to retrieve rows 2) Add header and footer row to the result set. The footer row must contain a count of the records. 3) Write the rows to a fixed width file if there were any data rows
I have got to the point that I can create the file (using a set of tasks that includes derived columns, sorts, aggregation and merges). However the file is created regardless of whether there were data rows returned. I can't check the row count before proceeding as this isn't set until the data task ends. And if I try to split them into separate data tasks (so that I can access this variable and perform conditional execution) it becomes harder to access the original rows.
Do you have any recommendations on the best way to achieve this? It all seems to be very complex and I'm starting to feel that it would be easier to do this outside of SSIS... Please help me to keep the faith!

I'm importing a large csv file two different ways - one with Bulk Import Task and the other way with the Data Flow Task (flat file source -> OLE DB destination).
With the Bulk Import Task I'm putting all the csv rows in one column. With the Data Flow Task I'm mapping each csv value to it's own column in the SQL table.
I used two different flat file sources and got the following:
I'm trying to work out how to update a table from a flat file source.
I could use the simple way of using OLE DB Command with
UPDATE <tblName> SET Column1 = ?, Column2 = ?, <etc> WHERE ID = ?
then using the mapping to join the parameter fields.
However, this (maybe!) a slow process when you have potential 500k+ records in the source file (and approx 150 files to process!)
What I would like to do is the following statement but I'm not sure if this is possible?
UPDATE <tblName> SET Column1 = sourceColumn1, Column2 = sourceColumn1, <etc> FROM <sourcefile> WHERE ID = sourceID
I've also thought about importing the sourcefile into a Recordset Destination and trying to use the variable in the SQLCommand but I'm not sure how to do this...
Does anybody have any ideas on how this could work or an alternative solution?
I am new in SSIS. Anyone know how to valify number of record that I load from csv file to SQL database table?
For example, the source file call product.csv and target table in database named DSS table name PRODUCT. I load data from flat file to table then I need verification if count between source and target not match send e-mail to me.
I m using SSIS and i am transfering the data from Flat File Source to the OLE DB destination File. The source file contain some corrupt data which i am transfering to the other Flat file destination file.
Debugging is succesful but i am not getting any error output in the Flat file destination file.
i had done exactly which is written in the msdn tutorial of SSIS.
Plz tell me why i am not getting the error output in the destination flat file?
I'm rather new to ssis and I've been reading and testing but didn't find a solution for this problem.Supose I've got a table Customer with some fields. One of the fields is CustID.I want to create as many flat files as there are Customers in the table with flat file name set to the CustID.If you could point me in a good direction, It would be nice.Greetings from Belgium

I have a File folder which contains 1..n Files of the same type. The files contain a DateValue at the beginning of each row. I now want to read the first Record of the file - extract the datevalue and search in my Importtable if there are any records with that Date. If there are allready Records with this date i know i allready imported that file and skip it in my For each File Container. If no records where found I want to copy them from the file to the table.
So I have a flatfile source and thoght I just make an oledb command task afterwards which looks like "Select count(*) from Import where Processdate = ?. and then a conditional split if the count == 0 or not... but i have problems getting the Count value out auf the OLD DB Command Task because everytime I try to add an outputcolumn i get the message: "An Output cannot be added to the output collection" and since there is no possibility to map an expression to the result...
I tried to workaround the problem using a lookup task.. but that seems to be the wrong way.
I am running a set of SQL statements on a SQL server, to insert flat file data into a SQL table. The flat file is already FTP'ed to the SQL server. I seem to be getting an error, which is possibly pointing to a permissions issue
The statements:

The error is : Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot bulk load because the file "c:jedox_dailyjdcom4401.txt" could not be opened. Operating system error code 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 1815)
If it is permissions issue, how do I overcome this?
I'm new to SQL Server 2005 SSIS. I'm trying to do something very simple, but I cannot figure it out, PLEASE HELP!
I have a flat file, which I read and then insert the data in a database table, that works fine. The problem is that I don't want to insert duplicate records. For example; if I run the package again, it will appent to the table. What I need to do is that if the package runs again, check if the record already exist, based one two columns, date and hour, and do not insert the record.
Can we bulk insert only the desired column from a flat file to a table?
I am using SSIS to bulk insert from a file with more than 200 columns. I am trying to find a way I can bulk insert them to multiples table through SSIS.
The one way I can think is pre map the columns from the file to the destination tables. Build numerous Bulk Insert tasks to achieve that. But not sure if SSIS will let me do that.
I am trying to create a program that transfers tables to flat files. At this point in time, I have suceeded in created one that creates delimited files.
However, I am now trying to create fixed-width files as you can do with the SSIS designer, but programatically.
Is there a way to programatically determine the width of a column from the source table? I can not seem to find any kind of function or member that stores this information or allows me to retrieve it.
I know what I need to change in order to set a width for a column, but I just don't know how to find the width without just asking the user to provide one.
I have Flat File as my source. Before i tried to load the data in to ORACLE Destination thru SCD component the error was with ole db.
any ways i try to load the data in Access DB but I€™m getting different error in same component (OLE DB) After SCD Component. can any one help me out in this.
I have some problems with the "Flat File Source" ... I am trying to load a textfile, but IS allways cuts the rows ... When I look at the preview while designing, the row is complete, so I am wondering what IS is doing ...
First, a couple of important bits of information. Until last week, I had never touched SISS, and therefore, I know very little about it. I just never had the need to use it...until now. I was able to convert my first 3 flat files to SQL2005 tables by right clicking on "SISS Package" and choosing "SISS Import and Export Wizard". That is the extent of my knowledge! So please, please, please be patient with me and be as descriptive as possible.
I thought I could attach some sample files to this post, but it doesn't look like I can. I'll just paste the information below in two separate code boxes. The first code box is the flat file specifications and the second one is a sample single line flat file similar to what I'm dealing with (the real flat file is over 2 gigs).

As you can see, each entry could have any number of records and multiples of some of the record types, with one exception, every entry must have a "01" record and can only have one "01" record. Oh, and each record has a length of 400.
I need to get this information into a SQL 2005 database so I can create a front end for accessing the data. Originally, I wanted one line for each account and have null values listed for entries that don't have a specific record. Now that I've looked at the data again, that doesn't look like a good idea. I think a better way to do it would be to create 5 different tables, one for each record type. However, records 2 through 5 don't have anything I can make a primary key. So here are my questions...
Is it possible to make 5 tables from this one file, one table for each of the record types?
If so, can I copy the Account number in record 01, position 13-19 in each of the subsequent record types (that way I could link the tables as needed)?
Can this be done using the SISS Import and Export Wizard to create the package? If not, I'm going to need some very basic step by step instructions on how to create the package.
Is SISS the best way to do this conversion or is there another program that would be better to use? I know this is a huge question and I appreciate the help of anyone who boldly decides to help me! Thank you in advance and I welcome anyone's suggestions!
I've been working 4 days non stop on this project, lost a complete weekend on it and I totally had it. Please have a look at this "simple" question:
I have a for each loop that checks for csv files in a folder. The path of the file(s) is stored in a variable varFileName. So far so good. But then I start with a data flow task and inside that data flow task I need to access one of those csv files at the time whenever it loops.
So my best guess is use a flat file source because that's the only task I see in the list that fits my question. But the thing is, you set up a connection to a....yes right, a flat source connection and there you have to select a flat file.
But no, I don't want to select ONE file, I need to access them all as the loop goes through all files. I'm sure this is something easy but I don't see it anymore.
I'm off taking a nap, need sleep Could someone please point me to a direction?
I have a SSIS package loading a lot of CSV file, which first line is the column head. Some file are ordered differently. However, package still try to load the file use predefined column order (it seems it doesn't check the head of each file see if it matchs the predefined column order).
Any way to force the package the check each file's head? or I had to manually check it using VB.Net script?
I am trying to make a SSIS package that will loop trough all files in a directory and load information from them.
I can do this with Raw File Sources since they allow me to use a variable name as the file path, but I cant seem to do the same with Flat File Sources. Is there a way to change the connection to a Flat File Source on each iteration of a loop? Actually, if this is possible with all types of file sources (like excel files) I would love to know about it too.
I was thinking about renaming the file through a script task but that does not seem like the most elegant solution so decided to see if some one here knows of a more proper way before I go that direction.
I want to read the following file using the Flat File Source flow:
10000 Router 20000 Hub 10000 Switch 30000 Server 40000 Harddisk
Spaces are used between the numbers (e.g. 10000) and the following text (e.g. Router). Each line is temrinated by a {CR}{LF} pair. I would normally think of this as a "fixed width" file.
But in the Flat File connection manager, if I use format "Fixed width", the preview shows a row width of 1 character wide (the first row contains the number "1"; the next row contains "0", and so on for the remaining 3 rows.in the first line) Not what I had in mind. How do I setup SSIS to handle this file in intended maner?

P.S. I never had any trouble with this type of file under Sql 2000 DTS. Also, have you noticed the crappy-looking "bitmap" displayed when one wants to click and define columns for a fixed-width file?
I have a weird thing happening. I have an .csv file. When I try to load it into a table, I can do it easily in DTS 2000. But when I am trying to do it in SSIS 2005 with exactly the same settings (like Text qualifier, row delimiter etc.), I am getting an error: "The last row in the sampled data is incomplete. The column or the row delimiter may be missing or the text is qualified incorrectly." I looked at the file and it looks complete to me.
What could be the problem ?
P.S. DTS 2000 is on 32-bit Windows, and SSIS 2005 is on 64-bit Windows 2003. Could that we a problem ?
i am importing a file using the Flat File Data Flow Source, it works fine but seems to miss data records every so often (not entire rows, just records inside the rows). The file has 149 columns and usually has around 15,000 to 20,000 rows.
For example, this is a sample of the input: AccountNum, CancelDate, CancelReason 123~2/2/08~ADC 345~2/1/08~CCC 789~2/5/08~CRC
After the Flat File Source imports the file I get back: AccountNum, CancelDate, CancelReason 123~2/2/08~ADC 345~2/1/08~ 789~2/5/08~CRC
has anyone ever seen this or heard of this happening. It is usually the same column that misses records and this only happens when it runs from a job (in debug mode it always works fine).
I have a simple SSIS package -> It reads a local text file which has 10 rows of data ( id, name, telephone # ) and puts it into a table.
It uses the "SSIS Flat File source" to read and a "SQL Command" to insert into the table. I can see that it reads line by line and puts each line into one row in my table.
Now, my production data is over 5 GiG of mainframe data and it seems their data is arranged in some hierarchical form.. so the position or arrangement of data in that file is important.
I pulled the data using my package and as far as I can see , my SSIS package pulled one line at a time ( from the flat file) and pushed it into my table. For each row, I also created an identity column in my table to be able to identify the positional arrangement of the hierarchical data and then use relational mappings to suit our business needs.
In all of this, my assumption is -
"SSIS reads one line at a time, inserts to my table and goes down to the next line .
It does NOT read a snapshot of rows from the flat file so as to write them into the table using internal ordering methods based on that particular snapshot "
