I've been trying to figure this out on my own for pretty much all of today, and part of last week. I've downloaded samples, searched this forum, blogs, etc. So I figured I would post, since it's the end of the day, and I'm not much further along.
I'm working on a custom transformation component, whose main function is to use SQL encryption/decryption to encrypt/decrypt data from the input columns, into the output columns. The component needs two strings, a key name and a certificate name, as well as the connection manager it should use to connect to SQL which will do the encryption/decryption.
Here's where I'm stuck:
1) How can I provide the key/certificate names via properties? What I'm expecting/looking for is a way to add these two properties at the component-level, which would show up under the "Custom Properties" section of the properties pane (currently, this only has one property, "UserComponentTypeName"). These key/certificate values will be used for all input columns.
2) How do I access the connection managers from within the component? What is the best way to go about using a connection manager from within my component to connect to SQL and perform the encryption/decryption? In a custom task, this was fairly simple, but it seems that same concept won't work on a transformation component.
3) Is there a better way to go about accomplishing this (column encryption via SQL from within SSIS)? Am I going about this all wrong?
As I said, I've searched for direction, but there seems to be next to nothing in the regards of a good reference for creating custom transformation components. I've looked at two MS samples, but can't seem to make any sense out of them.
I am writing a custom dataflow transformation component and I need to get the name of the preceeding component.
I have been trying to find a way to get a reference to the Package object, MainPipe object or IDTSPath90 object (connecting to the IDTSInput90 of my component) from my component because I think from there I can get to the information I want.
Is there any tutorial to learn how custom transformation component works? maybe a blog, pdf or something... Specifically, i need to learn how to generate an output column composed from 3 input columns. The problem is i dont know how to set the column value... anyone have some sample code?
I have looked at everything I could find on custom components, and I'm still confused about what has to be implemented in ReinitializeMetadata. The first custom component I'm trying to build is very similar to the Audit component, a derived column synchronous transformation that should be able to create any non-empty subset of four types of output columns.
I haven't found anything that does much with the inputs, the samples all seem to rely on RemoveInvalidInputColumns. I haven't found any substantial explanation of what this method actually does, or whether there are cases it doesn't handle. If it really handles all problems on the input side I don't need to know the details, but I'd like to hear some confirmation that this is the case.
For outputs, most of the sample projects seem to just call the base method. Some projects throw out all the output columns and create new ones to match the input columns one-to-one. Project Real throws away all the output columns and external metadata columns and creates a standard set of output columns with external metadata. The RegEx sample project uses information in a component custom property to tell it what output columns to expect, then adds missing columns and deletes unwanted columns. All of these approaches are using some reference information to inform it which outputs belong and which don't. What do you do when there is no other reference, just the output column and external metadata column collections?
The description for this method is "fix the errors found in Validate", but these projects just delete everything that wasn't perfect and recreate anything missing. In cases where the number and types of output columns require some user configuration, maybe a few custom properties, it seems a little high-handed to throw it all away and make them start from scratch. Or do you assume that this method isn't called unless the component state is really screwed up? It seems to me that simply adding or deleting input and output columns in the Advanced Editor would trigger ReinitializeMetadata because the external metadata would be out of sync. If it reacted by immediately re-adding an optional default column you deleted, or deleting an unconfigured column you just added, it would be pretty annoying.
Assuming that I wanted ReinitializeMetadata to actually fix things, I have some specific questions:
1 If an output column is not mapped to an external metadata column (or mapped to a nonexistent emc), should the output column be deleted or should a matching external column be created?
2 Same question reversed, if an external column is not mapped to any output column, should it be deleted or a matching output column created?
3 Would it make sense to look for compatible unmapped output and external columns and remap them?
4 If the user adds or deletes an output column in the advanced editor, was that an output column or an external metadata column?
And another thing, is there a definative list of which methods should be marked as not cls-compliant?
I am creating a custom transformation component, and a custom user interface for that component.
In my custom UI, I want to show the custom properties, and allow users to edit these properties similar to how the advanced editor shows the properties.
I know in my UI I need to create a "Property Grid". In the properties of this grid, I can select the object I want to display data for, however, the only objects that appear are the objects that I have already created within this UI, and not the actual component object with the custom properties.
How do I go about getting the properties for my transformation component listed in this property grid?
Hi all I'm into a project which uses a lot of views for joining 2 or more tables. Using the MERGE component in SSIS will be a huge effort coz it only has 2 inputs and I gotta SORT the input too. Isnt it possible to have a VIEW like component that joins more than 2 tables and DOESNT need sorting?? (I've thought about creating views in database engine but it breaks my data floe in SSIS and is'nt a practical solution)
What I want to accomplish is that at design time the designer can enter a value for some custom property on my custom task and that this value is accessed at executing time.
I'm on writing a custom data flow component (transformation). For this I need access to an external datasource. As best practice, it seems that you should use a connectionmanager in the package.
But I don't really know how to access them.
I've overwritten the AquireConnections() to lookup in the RuntimeConnectionCollection for the connection managers. But It seems it doesnt get called. If I call it my own, for example in validate (just for debugging purposes) the collection is empty, although there are two connectionmanagers in the package.
What am I doing wrong or has someone a code snippet for me.
I am missing something simple. I have added a new Transformation Script, put in my code to read the input rows, defined my outputs. I have tried to change the SynchonousInputId to 0, but I only get the option of None or input "Input 0" (91). What have I missed?
i am developing one custom transfer component, where i am building one custom object and want the same to be transfered from ComponentUI to component.I explored in this issue and came to know that we can make use of SaveToXML and LoadXML methods of IDTSPersist90 interface. I instantiated a new script component into an existing Data Flow in my SSIS project.
In the Script Transformation Editor, under the Connection Managers section, I associated the name dbConnManager to an already existing Connection Manager in the project.
My Connection Manager is of the type oOLEDB.
I then opened up the script designer and added the following lines of code where it said "Add your code here"
When I test run the project I get the following error and the new script component is red:
Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type 'System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection'. Instances of types that represent COM components cannot be cast to types that do not represent COM components; however they can be cast to interfaces as long as the underlying COM component supports QueryInterface calls for the IID of the interface.
I know the database connection works since I am using it in a component that executes before this new script component.
Does anyone have any examples of programmatically creating a Transformation Script Component (or Source/Destination) in the dataflow? I have been able to create other Transforms for the dataflow like Derived Column, Sort, etc. but for some reason the Script Component doesn't seem to work the same way.
I have done it as below trying many ways to get the componentClassId including the AssemblyQualifiedname & the GUID as well. No matter, what I do, when it hits the ProvideComponentProperties, it get Exception from HRESULT: 0xC0048021
Hi, I have 56 fields coming into the input of an script component, The need for script component was to just to check if one of those 56 columns has a valid date or not, If valid it will parse and put in an output date column, if not, it will put in NULL.
The 55 fields should be passed on. I dont really wanna write code and define output columns. How do I do this ?
I've created a custom data flow tranformation and it isn't showing up in the Tool Box Items to be added under the Data Flow Items tab (right click on tool box, 'Choose Items...', then clicked Data Flow Items).
I have done the following:
signed the assembly, added to GAC, copied the dll to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSPipelineComponents.
It worked previously when I was just starting out, however now I cannot see it. What would cause it to not show up? Everything compiles fine. How would I determine how to fix it so that it shows up?
I'm creating a custom data flow transformation in c#.
I would like to use expressions within this component in the same way as in the derived column component: specifying the expression as a custom property of an output column, then evaluating this expression for each row of the buffer and using this evaluated expression to populate my output column values.
So I've added an custom expression on my output column, and set its expression type to CPET_NOTIFY
But in the ProcessInput method I don't manage to get the evaluated expressions, when I use exp.Value I get my expression definition and not its evaluation.
Is there a way to get these evaluated expressions ?
I need to know how to use my private function - created as a scalar-valued-function in SQL Server 2005 - in script component (here a transformation is used) in a data flow task to transform a two-digit-month into a tree-sign-month:
I've created my own custom data flow transformation task (using C#) that will parse a fullname and output the various name parts. In the ProvideComponentProperties method, I create 5 output columns (prefix, first, middle, last, and suffix). In the ProcessInput method, I parse the input and add the name parts to the buffer. The bad thing is that I€™m making an assumption on the position of the Full Name input column within the buffer.
I would like the €œuser€? to be able to map their "full name" input column to a known Full Name column so I don€™t have to make any assumptions. This is the first SSIS task I€™ve tried to create and I haven€™t been able to find very many examples online.
I created a custom transform that has a custom interface and is a wizard that uses a web service. It creates custom properties and output columns on the fly. I set the dialog result to Ok and close at the end of the steps. The transform then has the custom fields and output columns I created in the wizard. I've verified this by right clicking on the transform and going to the advanced editor. If I then immediately run the package, the custom fields don't exist in the CustomPropertiesCollection. If I close the package and reopen it, the properties now are gone. If I then go through the wizard again, thus recreating the properties, they stay and don't disappear. The quickest way to get a working transform is to add it to my data flow then save, close and reopen the package and then go through the wizard. Just saving after I add the transform does not help.
Does anyone know what might be causing this very strange problem?
I would like my transformation to automatically create an output column for each input column. Any tips? I can't seem to determine which event to listen to or method to override.
Still working on custom security Since I can't get a name of file (path) from within CheckAccess method it becomes somewhat useless. Is there a way to maybe overload GetPermissions or Policies methods? Or maybe CreateReport method so that I can include some custom code there? Is there an example of something like that?
I wish the catalog tree was transparent to Authentication extension, I don't see a point in acl for a custom extension, all I want is names and I can build on top of that. Something along the lines -

I'm trying to create a custom connection manager and I have ConnectionType in the DtsConnection attribute set to "MSMDM". When I tried to create one in a package I got:
The connection type "MSMDM" specified for connection manager "{A8543B4B-41D9-4E69-9580-3D1A491AD719}" is not recognized as a valid connection manager type. This error is returned when an attempt is made to create a connection manager for an unknown connection type. Check the spelling in the connection type name. (TestHarness1)
So, a few questions:
What are the valid connection manager types?
Why can I not create a new connection manager type of my own?
If I cant create new connection manager types then the purpose of being able to build custom connecton managers is defeated. Hence, what's the point in giving us the ability to create custom connection managers? -Jamie
I am writing a custom transformation component that utilises a user variable.
Before using the variable at run time I am checking that the variable exists, but it would be nice to be able to add it if it does not. I cannot find any documentation on the subject, though I can see that the Variables class is derived from a ReadOnlyCollectionBase.
Is there a way to add a user variable with package scope from a custom component, either at run time or design time?
I've run into this a second time now. I'm hoping for some resolution AND guidance for proper build, save, etc. protocols in BIDS.
I've coded a custom component, included post-build procedures to add it to the GAC, selected it from the "Choose Items..." menu, and successfully added to a data flow. I've then been able to succesfully debug it.
This was all Friday afternoon. I shut down my BIDS session(s) and called it a week. This morning when I open BIDS, I get the following error when I attempt to add it to a data flow task:

What would explain this? I'm new to VS/BIDS. Am I improperly shutting down my BIDS sessions? Is a save required for my code? Does "Build <component>" not automatically save?
Also, when I re-build a component after making a change to it, what do I need to do in my package's Data Flow task? Delete the current component, re-add it, and configure it again? I'm sure there are certain things that require one type of re-initialization vs. others (i.e., making a change to the Design Time code vs. making a change to code within the ProcessInput method.)
What can I do to properly register this now? I'm dead in the water and have no idea what to do. Any help's appreciated.
I developed a €œdata flow source€? in my computer and it is ready! It works in my computer, but how do I deploy this component in to the server? I have any programming environment on it. Any Idea?

All it is supposed to do is create an output column and set its value to the result of calling a web service method (the transformation is synchronous). Everything seems fine, but when I run the data flow task that contains it, it doesn't generate any output. The Visual Studio debugger displays it as yellow, with 1,385 rows going into it, but the data viewer attached to its output is empty. The output metadata looks just like I expect: all of my input columns plus the new column, correctly typed. No validation or run-time warnings or errors are reported.
I'll include the entire C# file below, which only overrrides the ProvideComponentProperties, Validate, PreExecute, ProcessInput, and PostExecute methods of the parent PipelineComponent class.
Since this is effectively a specialization of the DerivedColumn transformation, could I inherit from the class that implements the DC component instead of PipelineComponent? How do I even find out what that class is?

I was trying the SSIS programming samples,that comes with installation of SQL Server 2005, I want to load the ChangeCase DLL in the toolbox.
The readMe file gives the direction. It does not work. It says you will see component in once you see DataFlow Task button( clicking Choose Items in the tools box).
I cannot load the custom component to the toolbox, Can I get some help.

Hi,I have developed a custom source component to get data from a generic odbc connection with some special caracteristics.
The component works fine by getting and mapping the output fields etc...
The only two problems existing are that when i run the task it says that the data flow has no components inside... how is this possible since i have my source mapped to a flat file inside that data flow?
This is the error:

The other problem is that if i want to <ignore> a certain source column the component already shows me an error saying that the no column with ID 0 was found...
Any one with experience in creating custom components?
