Damn! SQLServer2000 Can't Add A NOT NULL COLUMN Even In One Empty Existing Table!

Jan 8, 2007

Damn! SQLServer2000 can't add a NOT NULL COLUMN even in one empty
existing table!
That is, A is the existing table and it is emtpy, I want to add one NOT
NULL COLUMN (col_new) to A using following T-SQL statement, then it
will fail.

ALTER TABLE A ADD
col_new varchar(600) NOT NULL
GO

You should change it to these statements in SQLServer2000:

ALTER TABLE A ADD
col_new varchar(600) NULL
ALTER TABLE A ALTER COLUMN col_new varchar(600) NOT NULL
GO

ah, ridiculous! right?

Fortunately, this stupid behavior is changed in SQLServer2005. The
first T-SQL statements works.

Replication :: Add A Not Null Column To Existing Table

Aug 27, 2015

We have a requirement to add a not null column to an existing table.

I created the column with null and updated with single quotes, and then converted the column into not null.

Now, I can see in the publisher, it went fine. but in the subscribers, i'm getting the error as, can not insert null value. I then tried to make column as null to resolve the issue, but still it is holding the same error and not proceeding further.

Now I even dropped the column. still same issue. how can I resolve this issue? I'm using sql server 2008 R2 with SP3. replication type is Merge replication.

Dropping The Null Characteristic On An Existing Table Column

I am trying to drop the "allow nulls" characteristics on an existing table
column. I know that there are not Nulls currently in this column, nor will
there ever be. How do I get rid of that "allow nulls" checkmark on an
existing table structure? Thanks, Craig.

Derived Column Logic To Replace Empty String With Null?

Nov 7, 2006

Ok.. so I have a fixed position data feed. I read the file in as just whole rows initially, process a specific position and evaluate a conditional split to determine direction of the file for proper processing (file contains multiple recors with different layouts). This all works fine. I then use the derived column feature to process all the columns.

Most of the columns are as simple as SUBSTRING(RecordData,1,10) for example to get the first column. This all works for string data. I then have a column that is a date field. The problem occurs that the code SUBSTRING(RecordData,20,10) returns either a date or empty set of data if no date was in the original file. When this gets sent to the OLEDB connection (SQL Server 2005) into the date field it fails. If the record has a date it works, but if it is empty it fails the insert.

I tried to replace empty strings with NULLs with this code. REPLACE(TRIM(SUBSTRING(RecordData,20,10)),"",NULL(DT_WSTR,10)). This does not work. So my question is how do I bring a date field from a fixed flat file into a SQL datetime field using a derived column? More specifically is how do I set it to NULL if its empty data? When I use the above code it inserts all the rows from the file, but it sets all rows to NULL not just the empty ones.

Thanks.

Hello,I'm a beginner in SQL and I have been searching through the SQL Cookbook and Google but I can't seem to find an example of what I want to do. I want to create a report that will return names and emails using two of my tables. I want to use the email in my primary table in the select but if it is null or empty I want to replace it with an email from my secondary table. Below is what I would like to do but I got a syntax error with it in SQL Server 2000. SELECT MemberID As ID, MemberFirstName As FirstName, MemberLastName As LastName, (IF MemberEmail = '' THEN SELECT TOP 1 OtherEmail FROM OtherTable WHERE OtherID = MemberID) As EmailFROM PrimaryTableThanks for your time.Jason

Adding Column To A Table Before An Existing Column

Mar 30, 2004

I simply need the ability using SQL to add columns in an existing table before (or after) columns that already exist.

The MS SQL implementation of ALTER TABLE doesn't seem to provide the before or after placement criteria I require. How is this done in MS SQL using SQL or is there a stored procedure I can use?

Thanks.

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Out If Whole Column Of Data In A Table Is Empty?

Dec 2, 2013

I have created some dynamic sql to check a temporary table that is created on the fly for any columns that do contain data. If they do the column name is added to a dynamic sql, if not they are excluded. This looks like:

If (select sum(Case when [Sat] is null then 0 else 1 end) from #TABLE) >= 1 begin set @OIL_BULK = @OIL_BULK + '[Sat]' +',' END

However, I am currently running this on over 230 columns and large tables 1.3 mil rows and it is quite slow. How I can dynamically create a sql script that only selects the columns in the table where there is data in a speedier manner. Unfortunately it has to be on the fly because the temporary table is created on the fly.

Adding And Populating A Column To Existing Table

Dec 5, 2005

Sorry I'm pretty new to SQL so I don't know if this is a simple question. I have a table, and I am trying to add a column to the table and populate this column using what would be called an 'IF' function in Excel.

Basically 'column A' has numbers in it. I want SQL to look at 'column A' and if the first 5 digits of the number in 'column A' are 00001, then put 'description A' into new column 'column B'. If the first 5 digits of the number in 'column A' are 00002, then put 'description B' into 'column A' etc.

Any ideas?

Adding Column With Primary Key In Existing Table

Jan 21, 2014

I want to add new primary key into existing table which already has a primary key. But,I do not want to remove the old primary key, since there are many records and the old primary key also have relationship with other table

When I am using this query:

alter table hem154
add indexNO uniqueidentifier default newid()

alter table hem154
add CONSTRAINT pk_hem154_indexNo PRIMARY KEY (PK_indexNO)
go

Note:
Hem154 ~ Table name
indexNo ~ Column Name

I get this runtime error:

Msg 1779, Level 16, State 0, Line 1
Table 'hem154' already has a primary key defined on it.
Msg 1750, Level 16, State 0, Line 1

Could not create constraint. See previous errors.

How Can Update Specific Column In Existing Table

Feb 4, 2006

I am building a data warehouse. I have many columns I want to populate in a fact table using integration services. Sample fields are: companyID, companyName, companyNumberOfAccounts, company, NumberOfUsers.

In the integration services package, I would like to keep this fact table in place and populated with data and to build integration services packages that update each of the existing row's specific columns (e.g. companyNameOfAccounts) one by one. For example, I have a source of data that has companyID and companyNumberOfAccounts data.

Is it possible to use the SQL Server Destination or OLE DB Destination Integration Services elements to import companyID and companyNumberOfAccounts data so that existing records just have their companyNumberOfAccounts column updated?

What I did was I went to sql server, right clicked and selected "Modify".The column properties dialog box/edit grid is then displayed with attributesthat I can modify.
There are two major nodes in this dialog box. One is named "General" and the otheris named "Table Designer". I expand the "Table Designer" node and then go to the node labeled "Identity Specification" It is here where I would like to edit thevalues.
The values that are listed for edit are listed below. BUT, the problem is thatI can place my cursor in those fields, but I am not able to change/edit them. Can anyone tell me what the problem is here? and how I can fix it?

Does SSRS Have To Create Its Own Database? Or Can It Use An Existing Empty One?

Sep 10, 2007

Hello everyone,

Greetings! I just found this group after wasting hours trying to make
SSRS work with databases that are already created (that is, the DBA
created two empty databases for me, X and XTempDB).

I keep getting "this connection string is invalid can't use this to
connect to SQL Server" in the Database Setup tab.

The problem is that to create its own database, SSRS needs dbcreator
and securityadmin roles (please correct me if I'm wrong here). And I'm
having a helluva problem trying to convince the DBA to give me
temporary dbcreator and securityadmin roles!

Is there any document or
something that I can use to convince him that SSRS will not do
anything like recreating the login (because he said that the login has
already existed and has its role set up in many other databases)?

Any help, pointers, suggestions, etc. is very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

SQL Server 2008 :: Adding Column To Existing Replicated Table

Feb 9, 2015

I have a scenario where I need to add a blank column to a table that is a publisher. This table contains over 100 million records. What is the best way to add the column? In the past where I had to make an update, it breaks replication because the update would take forever as jobs are continuously updating the table so replication can't catch up.

If I alter a table and add a column, would this column automatically get picked up in replication?
