Access Rights To Two Mssql Dbs Via Password Protected Role
Jan 30, 2007I dont know how to arrange situation when application enduser needs to access data in two databases of mssql server concurently in those circumstances that access rights to the data should be restricted by password protected role (whose password is not known to the end user).
Detailed description of problem:
So far there was an application, that manipulated its data, saved in mssql server's database. End user authenticates to application by his (mssql server's) login name and password. The application authenticates the user by connecting to the database with the given name/password credentials, and then the application sets application role with hardcoded name/password. Thus application role sets the access rights for consequent end user's requests, delivered via application to the database server.
The goal is that end user cannot manipulate application database data when connects to the database by other means (e. g. via SQL server Manager), because he does not know the application role's password.
Now suppose that there are two applications (A1, A2), both using the same model for access restrictions. Each of them has its own database (A1DB, A2DB) and its own application role (A1R residing in A1DB, A2R residing in A2DB). End user (login) X can manipulate A1DB data when connects via A1, and A2DB data when connects via A2, and NO data when connects by other means.
Finally suppose that some subset of A2 data (let's say one table) is useful to see also via A1 application. There is no problem to add to A1DB view, that shows data from A2DB table together with A1DB tables. But when the user is connected via A1, he cannot see the data, because query on A1 view fails (user has not access rights on A2 data).
The access rights for A1 enduser cannot be set by no means i know because:
1) I cannot set the rights via public (guest) access because in that case they will be accessible to any users connected by any third party products, which is supposed to be security hole.
2) I cannot set the rights via dbuser or dbrole privileges, because they will not work when connected via A1 application (setting the app role suppresses the db privileges)
3) I cannot set the rights via application role because two application roles cannot be set concurrently.
4) I cannot abandon using application roles mechanism and use database roles mechanism, because db roles cannot be protected by independent password (not known to the enduser).
Please can anybody review my problem and either find the mistake in my approach, or propose other solution? So far I suppose the problem is my ignorance, because I am not great mssql expert.

Jul 9, 2015There is a ">" character (right-angle bracket) inside my SQL Server password. When I supplied this password to the bcp utility, the ">" character was treated as an output redirection symbol. So the password was truncated at ">" and the bcp output got sent to a file with a name consisting of the rest of the password after ">". I'm using SQL Server 2012. I cannot use Windows authentication due to company policy. Is there a way to resolve this without changing the password?

I'm trying to import some data from a table in an Access Database into my SQL Server.
It's one field I'm having a problem with and I don't know how to get round it.
Basically the field in Access is called "DueToStart" and is a "Date/Time" type field.
It shows values as "09:00:00" etc.
When I try to import this table into SQL, I get the following message, and I don't know how to get round it.

As a result, I'm going to write a number of Stored Procedures to replace the MS Access code. My first attempt worked on a small sample, however, trying to move this on to a real table hasn't worked (I've amended the SP and code to try and get it to work on 2 fields, rather than the full 20 plus).It works in SQL Management console (supply a Client ID, it returns all the client details), but does not return anything (recordset closed) when trying to access via VBA code.The Stored procedure is:-

Aug 17, 2004I have created some DB tables on SQL Server. Now I want to import some data from Access using Data Transformation Services.
The APPLICATION table I have created has the following columns:
AppID, AppName, AppMnem, GripsID, Decommissioned, Last Modified, Modified By
AppID is the primary key and is an identity column with an autoincrement on insert.
The query I used to import the data from Access is:

I have been looking for a way to import data from sql server 2005 or access into sql compact edition.
The short end of the story is that our product supports 3 databases, sql server, mysql, and access(for standalone deployments)
if we can use sql compact instead of access i believe it woudl simplify our support and maintenance, however i am struggling to find a way to get our existing data into compact.
This product is not a mobile application, and the .sdf files will be deployed to desktops, the only way ive seen to convert data so far is to use activesync over a mobile device.
is there any other way to get our existing sql server or access databases into compact?

Import Data From MS Access: URGENT Issue Please!
Apr 14, 2005We have a production Access database and SQL Server database. When I created a DTS package to import data from Access and run manually, it works fine. But when I schedule, it doesn't work, saying some one already opened the file or no permission error.
WE CAN'T get permissions for the Access file to the account that is assigned to SQL Server agent. It's internal policy of the company,because that account is used on all the sql servers to run the agent. Is there a work-around to import data from access. We do have a service account which has access to the Acess db.

Import Data From Access 2003 To SQL Server 2005 Via T SQL ?
Oct 5, 2007I have a customer using a web app where the data is drawn from a database in SQL Server 2005.
In addition to its normal tables, the database has two lookup tables which are deleted, recreated, and repopulated once a week. The data for these two tables comes from two queries in an Access database which essentially turn many related tables into two flat tables.
I know this can be done with SSIS, I've done it, I suppose it could be done witth SSMA for Access, but could this operation be done with a stored prodecure ? Most steps would not be a problems. They would be:
- Drop the two tables in SQL Server (no problem)
- Recreate them (no problem, maybe better to just delete all existing records, either way)
- Connect to the query in the Access database (here is where I have questions)
- Simply do an INSERT from the Access query to the SQL table.
So my question is whether we can connect to an Acess query from a stored proc, I suppose using ODBC.
Can this be done? If so how? Are there any papers on this topic?

May 11, 2008 i have a website project making an online catalog, maybe 20 categories, a few hundred items. the small business starter kit looked perfect to jump start this. the client has provided an access database with the two table for categories and products. i've got the dts wizard installed and have been trying to import the access data into the sbsk database but i'm stuck. i'm almost positive that ONE time when i was banging around with the dts wizard, the Edit Mapping screen would let me drop down a list of fields in the destination table so I could actually tell it which field data from the source i wanted to go into which field of the destination. Of course it didn't succeed that time and now i can't seem to figure a way to get back to having the option to choose the destination fields, all it gives me in the drop down is "<ignore>" or the field name of the source table, which of course doesn't match any of the ones that are in the sbsk.
i've been back through it for a couple days, trying different ways, migrating the data first to sql, letting it try a transfer to a new table then trying to import that, moving both out to excel, aligning the data manually and trying to import that, etc. i'm bout out of ideas and would sure like to get back to just trying to work out the data type alignment issues with whatever it was i did when i could choose the destination table's fields.
i'd be most appreciative if anyone has a clue what i'm talking about and can put me back on track.

I use a transform datatask to transform the data.They were running properly, but last week we installed W2K SP4, andnow the transform task for files from dBF2 are not working properly.I have two tranform tasks to extract data from files in dBF2 folder.If I double click to open the transform data task of either of them,Enterprise Manager crashes with the errrormmc.exe applicatio ErrorThe instruction "xxxx" referenced memory at "xxx". The memory couldnot be read.Althoug the transform task for one of the files will run, the otherwill not run giving the messageError Source: DTS packageCatastrophic failureAlso, I have an Access database that has links to the same dBasefiles. For files from dBF2 folder, I'm able to see the data from oneof the files, but if I double click to see the data from the other,access crashes with no specific error message. Jun 30, 2015I have a client who has SSMS installed on her laptop. She is able to connect to the SQL server via SSMS in the office and query data on the server.
She needs to be out of site often and doesn't have internet access. She asks if the data tables can be "backed up" or saved on her laptop, so she can look at them without worrying connecting to the server. I am not sure if this can be achieved, as SSMS is built for accessing a server, not a desktop. Myself never have this need. If I really need it, I would go to Microsoft Access and create an ODBC connection to the datatables. But this client thinks that Microsoft Access is beneath her.
Data Access :: Server Rejected The Connection - Access To Selected Database Has Been Denied
Jun 10, 2015I have recently upgraded to SQL2014 on Win2012. The Access front end program works fine.
But, previously created Excel reports with built in MS Queries now fail with the above error for users with MS 2013. The queries still work for users still using MS 2007.
I also cannot create any new queries and get the same error message. If I log on as myself on the domain to another PC with 2007 installed it works fine, so I don't think it is anything to do with AD groups or permissions.

Nov 12, 2015We need to insert data/rows from a SQL Server 2014 database into MS Access database. The problem is, there are so many columns (100+) in the table and there are so many insert transactions of this kind (from different tables) that it is not very easy to write the code in VB.NET that lists all column names.
Both the Access and SQL Server tables have the same number of columns and the equivalent data types, so inserting is not really the problem. It's just that is there a way to do an insert statement in T-SQL that does not name all the columns?

I've been developing desktop client-server and web apps and have used Access and SQL Server Standard most of the time.
I'm looking into using SQL CE, and had a few questions that I can't seem to get a clear picture on:
- The documentation for CE says that it supports 256 simultaneous connections and offers the Isolation levels, Transactions, Locking, etc with a 4GB DB. But most people say that CE is strictly a single-user DB and should not be used as a DB Server.
Could CE be extended for use as a multi-user DB Server by creating a custom server such as a .NET Remoting Server hosted through a Windows Service (or any other custom host) on a machine whereby the CE DB would run in-process with this server on the machine which would then be accessed by multiple users from multiple machines??
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE
- and further more can we use Enterprise Services (Serviced Components) to connect to SQL CE and further extend this model to offer a pure high-quality DB Server?

I cannot see the tables set up as set up as pass-through table types to a Oracle 9i db

Authentication failed.
Secondly I need to make 2 more changes to the code posted above.
1.If some access database .mdb, has got password protection, then how to include the password in the script, so that one does not have to manually feed in the password during data import work.
2. How to limit the data that is to be imported from the table [Table1001] by including a WHERE Clause, like for example - SELECT * FROM [Table1001] WHERE xdate = '2015-9-16 00:00:00.000')

I Iwill have many customers that will need their own set of records and access pages "branded for their company" each customer will have many clients. I am hosting this application on a windows 2003 server with SQL 2005 server enterprise.
I am using windows authentication, I have created a username in windows, then i added the windows user in SQL management studio in security, granted "DB Read" and "DB write" and again under the database security tab. still from the web authentication fails. i must be nissing a step or two?
I expect to set up a username for each database as i setup new customers.
