Excel 255 Character Limit :(

I am using VB.NET / SQL to extract data from an Excel spreadsheet and insert it (via a dataset) into an SQL database.
My SQL select to form the dataset is:
Select 0, '01/01/1905', '00:00' , 'Description: ' + [DESCRIPTION] + '<br/><br/>Type: ' + [Field5] + '<br/> Thankyou' As Description From [Primary Schools$]
I am using Jet for the connection, the connection string is:
sExcelConnect = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:Path ofile.xls;Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1"""
My problem is that, although Description and Field5 themselves are not above 255 characters, the combination of the two, plus my own text do come out as more than 255 characters and as such get truncated.
I have tried using cast and nested selects, but to no avail.
Any body got any ideas ?

I€™m having a problem with a storedprocedure in SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition: I have declared a varchar(max) variable, but when a try to assign a large string it gets truncated to 255 characters, I get the same result if a declare the variable with varchar(8000), ¿can someone help me fix this?, I don€™t need the full 8000 characters, but I need more that just 255.

I am trying to store long text so I gave the field in question the TEXT datatype. But it only lets me store 1023 characters. I was expecting (but not quite needing) 2,147,483,647 characters when using the TEXT datatype. Can some one point out what I am missing.

I am building rather large SQL statements using expressions and I am about to hit the 4000 character limit. First, what were the reasons for setting such a low limit? With it in place you are forced to come up with other solutions, but perhaps that was the intention.
Speaking of limits, what are the limits for storing a value in a string that is defined in a package configuration file? What are the limits when creating a string within a script task and then use it to set a string variable in the package? What are the limits when using a string value as an input parameter to an Execute SQL Task using OLE DB? Do these differ depending on the connection type?
I guess I'm getting a bit paranoid about limits, but I don't want to hit any others late in the design.

I am currently having a problem where my SQL server seems to lock any variables to 1000 characters (ie. varchar(8000) can only hold 1000)I have read in numerous sources it was possible to change that limit so the varchar can truly hold the 8000 characters and not stop at 1000, but there was no info on how to do this.I am looking for a "How to" to put this limit to 8000.Thank you!

I've written a managed (C#) stored procedure with the following signature:
[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]
public static void Sproc(string startDate, string endDate, string idList)...
Sometimes when I call this sproc, my comma-separated list of IDs exceeds 4000 characters. How can I get around this problem?
I guess I need something equivalent to NVarchar(MAX), but for CLR sprocs instead of TSQL.
Any thoughts?

Hi - I am changing a field from type nvarchar to type text, given thatI need to store strings longer than 255 characters. When I look at the data in the database, the column inquestion shows the content, whereas the next column, which has alwaysbeen of type text, shows '<LongText>' - does this mean anything? I have a revenue spreadsheet that I populate with data using SSIS. It has 18 named ranges, but only 12 will show up in the Excel Destination Editor. Is there a work-around to be able to get past the 12 displayed limitation? thanks.

Hopefully this is an easy one.
But in both the importexport utility and from SSIS. "#" become "." (aka pound to period) in column headers. So for example [# of errors] becomes [. of errors]. Now I truly do not ever remember having this issue before but then again I have don't remember having to construct field names with a various assortment of characters that are randomly strewn about as though someone discovered the symbol picker recently and had decided to employ it to make the a spreadsheet a more interesting place. Hence after a good day of time wasted. (as I considered doing an alter table after the sheets were put out.. and then thought better of it.) I seek guidence here. Thanks in advance.

A space was added as the first character of the contents in the Left, Center and Right section of the Report Header and Footer exported to Excel. Example :
In the RDL, Header values are:
Left = "Product Report" ; Center = "Confidential" ; Right = "Page n of n"
In the exported report to Excel, Header properties (-->File.-->Page Setup--> Header/Footer Tab) are:
Left = " Product Report" ; Center = " Confidential" ; Right = " Page n of n"
Is there a way to eliminate that space character?

I want to import date from excel file from the row if this row has a character like 'TableName', and I don't know the rownumber and end column number ,so I can't use openrowset 'select * from Sheet$ A11:N'.  And I am thing if I can get the rownumber of the row contain string 'TableName' and the max column ,that May be easy to extract data.

But that removes everything after the first and I need it to return all data before the last

I have the following scenario, The contents of main file are like :

And I need the output in the following form:
ServerCentral=forum=is=the=best
so=be=on=it
The logic being that multiple and consecutive occurrences of the special character, here - pipe , should be replaced by a single special character.

Hi!
I have a table like this below and it doesn't only contain English Names but it also contain Chinese Name.
CREATE TABLE Names
(FirstName NVARCHAR (50),
LastName NVARCHAR (50));
I tried to view the column using SQL Query Analyzer, It didn't display Chinese Character.
I know that SQL Server 2005 is using UCS-2 Encoding and Chinese Character uses Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) Encoding.
I want to read the FirstName and LastName columns and display in Window Form Data Grid and ASP.NET Grid View.
I tried to use this code below and it didn't work. It convert some of the English Name to Chinese Character and it display the chinese character and some still in the original unreadable characters.
Does anybody know how to read those character from SQL Table and display the correct Chinese Character without converting the English Name into Chinese also?

I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Any inputs on resolving this will be much appreciated.

I am trying to get the contents of the Excel Files dynamically and dumping into the SQL Database using SSIS. Through WMI Event Watcher, I could find when one or more Excel files dumped in a particular folder and using ForEach Loop Container I was able to take all the filenames and pass it through Variables. But at the same time in the Data Flow, I have to pass each Sheet of an Excel File to the Excel Source control and export the data to my SQL Database using OLEDB Destination.
For that I need to get the names of each sheets in an Excel File and pass it to the Excel Source Control through variables. But when I give Data Access Mode as "Table name or view name variable" and provide the variable name in that, then it is giving an error message as "A destination table name has not been provided".
And at the same time, Since I was not able to provide an static Filename (as I am passing through Variables), when I tried to map the columns in the OleDB Destination, it is not allowing me to map the columns.
So all these things I should do at Run-time using Variables in SSIS. I don't want to hard-code any filenames or Sheet names. If any one of you have a solution, please share with me.

l've the following situation,
l've some excel files controlled by Vendor which changing frequently. The only thing does not change is the header name of each column.
So my question is, is there any way to create a new table based on the excel file selected including the column name in SSIS? So that l can use the data reader as source to select those columns l am interested on and start the integration.

i have an SSIS package that exports to an excel file. This works fine. the problem is that it appends the data instead of overwriting the file. Is there any way to overwrite the file like you can with a flat file? I have to email the file everyweek and don't want to have to clear it out manually. Any help would be appreciated

I have a problem with retreving a excel data through excel source component.
I have source component as Excel Source which will connect to my .xls sheet.
To retrieve the values from the sheet i am using a query as,
"SELECT F14,F3 FROM [Charac Defn & Assgnment$]"
The column F14 is not formatted so that the format of the cell is "General" I have a different type of values in the F14 column such as "PE","PES",15,20,20.00,8888.9999 etc..
While i click on preview button of Excel source it shows only the text values and not the int or decimal values, its returning NULL for those cells. I tried to use convert function, its throwing an error as

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Undefined function 'Convert' in expression. (Microsoft JET Database Engine)
Is there any other function to change the format of the cell or i need to some thing else

When I open the spreadsheet in Excel 2000, it works fine. When I try to print, it crashes Excel. In testing, I narrowed it down to the Header/Footer, because it also crashes when I go to Page Setup and click on the header/footer tab.
However, I can print the same spreasheet from Excel 2007.
Am I just dealing with a "you need to upgrade all your clients" situation, or is there a known issue with certian formatting that is passed out with reports that is not supported by older versions of Excel?
I am using Reporting Services 2005 SP2 to serve up the report that is exported to Excel.
Any assistance is appreciated.

I have ssis package where I have excel connection manager with expression pointing to a variable which has path for location and name of excel spreadsheet to be create each with date on the name.ExcelFilePath points to variable for shared location where excel file will be saved.I have File system task for copying template excel file to destination location with date in file name.I drag and drop excel destination.  Pointed to excel connection manager. Under data access mode, I have select table and view.  When I try to select name of excel sheet,  it says, no tables or views could be loaded. I should be able to see sheetname there so that I can map column. I only have option to create new spreadsheet. I want to use template to load data in excel file. I dont want to create new sheet. It was working before. But I opened the ssis package and its broken. I am creating an SSIS package witha a Dataflow task, which reads from an Excel source and then uses script component to dumpt the data to multiple tables in Sql Server database
I need to some how make my Excel source dynamic, that is my excel template which i would be using to map the excel columns to script component's input columns would be dynamic..
In other words, I should be able to define the Excel Source, Column Mapping Information, Precedence constraint to the Script component dynamically
Please suggest how could i accomplish this

When creating a database, SQL Server 6.5 seems to have a 2 gig limit. What I mean is that if the device chosen is over 2 gigs SQL Server displays the size of the device as anegative number. This prevents me from being able to expand the database when I need to. Can anyone tell me why this is so, and if there`s anyway around it??
