Multiple Flat Files To Different Tables (SSIS)

Feb 21, 2012

So we are running SQL 2000 and we use a DTS Package to load about 100 txt files to different tables in a SQL DB.

So in DTS packages you define the connection (database) and the different source files will connect to the connection.

You define the destination on the flow arrow. My question is how do i accomplish this in SQL 2008 using SSIS. (upgrading SQL).

SSIS Mapping Columns From Flat Files

Jan 4, 2008

I had to use use ssis 2005 in a short project recently & had littletime to work it out. I was importing a whole bunch of flat files intoSQL Server tables with many derived columns and transformations inbetween. It seems to automatically map columns from the flat file to columns inthe sql table where the names of the columns are equal. But can italso do it automatically on position, so flat file column 1 goes tosql table colum 1, etc, etc? In each flat file I had to manually clickand drag the columns across to map them which took a very long time asthere were hundreds of columns in some tables! Thanks.

SSIS Issue With Flat Files Not Wanting To See CR/LF

Mar 14, 2008

I have an issue with an SSIS package I was hoping to get some commentary on.

I am taking a flat file, scrubbing it in SSIS, and exporting it into a different package.

The files are fixed width. Both Fixed Width, and Ragged Right settings are not working, I've tried both.

My current config on the flat file connection is set to use the file name as variable. The format is "Ragged Right". The Text Qualifier is "<none>". The Header row and Header rows to skip are <CR><LF> and 0. The column names in first row are not checked.

In the advanced tab, 43 columns are defined. The output and input have all been verified numerous times to conform to the file spec.

When previewing the file in preview, only one record shows up even though the file contains multiple.

What it's doing is the last column contains the CR and LF characters and then it continues putting the other rows in that column (it is ignoring the CR LF and not going to the next row)

WHen I click on "Columns" in the flat file connector, it displays the rows of information as it should. When I click back down to preview a second time, the rows are displayed as they should.

The initial time you preview, the rows are jacked up and all smashed onto the first row. WHen trying to execute the package, I get a truncation error because the last column is supposed to be 7 in length, and contains multiple data rows in it.

When trying the option "Fixed Width" it does the same thing. It ignores the CR LF and makes everything one row.

Can someone please explain what it is I'm doing wrong? Or why when I click to preview the first time it is broken, but when clicking on columns and then back to Preview it is fixed?

Problem Importing Multiple Flat Files Into SQL Sevrer (2005) Using SSIS

Mar 3, 2008

Hi,

I'm just learning SSIS. As I was following the tutorial on foreach loop container (lesson 2) to export multiple flat files in creating a simple ETL package in SSIS, I get the following error:

This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors.
SSIS package "Take17.dtsx" finished: Failure.

I spent some time in understanding where could be the error. I traced it to the following place. If you take a look at the Lesson#2 in creating a simple ETL package in SSIS, using foreach loop container to import files into SQL server, as soon as I finish going through steps in configuring the file connection manager to use the variable for connectionstring, it immediately disappears. I repeated the tutorial three times exactly as I pointed out and when I reach to this step of configuring file connection manager for connectionstring, it takes the path and when I start debugging it, I get this error. When I go and check if everything is Ok, the connectionstring value is empty.

Why the value in connectionstring disappears?

Thank you.

Need SQL For Finding Gaps Comparing Two Sets Of Pe

Feb 27, 2008

Hi all,

I have two tables - Planning and Appointments:

Planning - contains a list of planned items. Used to define boundaries for a work day and defines based on type what can be done for each item.

Id,
TypeId - the type of the planned items
BeginTime DateTime - begin date and time of the planned item
EndTime DateTime - end date and time for the planned item

In the Planning table we can have as many records per day as we need:

1, First Meeting, 1 Jan 2008 09:00, 1 Jan 2008 11:00
2, First Meeting, 1 Jan 2008 11:00, 1 Jan 2008 12:00
3, First Meeting, 1 Jan 2008 13:00, 1 Jan 2008 15:00
4, First Meeting, 1 Jan 2008 15:00, 1 Jan 2008 18:00

Appointments - contanis a list with appointments

Id,
BeginTime DateTime
EndTime DateTime

1, 1 Jan 2008 09:00, 1 Jan 2008 09:30
2, 1 Jan 2008 10:00, 1 Jan 2008 11:00
3, 1 Jan 2008 11:00, 1 Jan 2008 11:30
4, 1 Jan 2008 14:00, 1 Jan 2008 15:30

What is needed?

What I need is to a find a way to compare the planned items with the appointments and to return all the periods for which a planned time exists:

Free planned time:

1, 1 Jan 2008 09:30, 1 Jan 2008 10:00
2, 1 Jan 2008 11:30, 1 Jan 2008 12:00
3, 1 Jan 2008 13:00, 1 Jan 2008 14:00
4, 1 Jan 2008 15:30, 1 Jan 2008 18:00

So, having two multitudes of periods, where the one specifies the planning templates and the other real used time, I need to find all the periods which can be used for another appointments.

I've tried several aproaches, but I always faced performance problems.

Thanks in advance.

Importing Multiple Flat Files To Multiple Tables In SSIS

Jun 27, 2006

I have a couple of hundred flat files to import into database tables using SSIS.

The files can be divided into groups by the format they use. I understand that I could import each group of files that have a common format at the same time using a Foreach Loop Container.

However, the example for the Foreach Loop Container has multiple files all being imported into the same database table. In my case, each file needs to be imported into a different database table.

Is it possible to import each set of files with the same format into different tables in a simple loop? I can't see a way to make a Data Flow Destination item accept its table name dynamically, which seems to prevent me doing this.

I suppose I could make a different Data Flow Destination item for each file, in the Data Flow. Would that be a reasonable solution, or is there a simpler solution, or should I just resign myself to making a separate Data Flow for every single file?

Integration Services :: Comparing Variable Value With Flat File Column In Precedence Constraint

Aug 4, 2015

I am creating one SSIS package where my source is oracle. I have transferred the data from Oracle to flat file as per client requirement.I have to create single package for 2 country 1 is US and another is CANADA Columns are below

ZONE_ID,
ZONE_NAME
Zone Id having data like 10001,10002,10003,20001,2002,2003

Where zone_id start with 1000 is US Zone and Zone_Id start with 2000 is Canada Zone.

For US:
1. Load geography data from DB tables into flat files
2. Load geography data from flat files to Spectrum DB tables

For Canada:
1. Load geography data from DB tables into flat files
2. Load geography data from flat files to Spectrum DB tables

Now I want to look from flat file if Zone_id start with 1000 then it must go to US_DFT and if Zone_id start with 2000 then it must go to CANADA_DFT.

Finding Zero Length Files

Apr 11, 2008

I'm trying to build a process within SSIS and running into a large number of road blocks. I could just drop out into T-SQL and code this entire thing, but I'm trying not to do that so that I can take advantage of the parallel processing pieces as well as learn a few things along the way.

Here's the overview of what I need to do on a daily basis:
1. FTP files to a local directory which I haven't already grabbed
2. Make a copy of the files into an archive directory
3. gunzip the files in my working directory
4. Remove any zero length files
5. For each file in the directory, run a data flow task
6. At the successful completion of the data import, log the imported filename into a table, along with the row count
7. If 6 is true, delete the file from the working directory

I gave up trying to get the FTP task to do #1 and I also gave up trying to get a script task written to do this. So, I wrote a stored procedure that will grab any files off an FTP site that are not already in my archive directory.

I figured out that the File System Task is incapable of handling wildcard characters to basically do "copy *.gz...". I could have done this in very little code within TSQL as well, but decided to use a for each loop to go 1 file at a time and use the file system task to copy the file.

I've already setup the for each loop with the execute process task to do the gunzip of each file in the directory. I also figured out how to suppress the pop up window as well as make it ignore any error messages. (Some of our files get an "unexpected eof" from gunzip, so that I know when we're done with the process, anything with a .gz extension had an error unzipping and needs to be kicked back to the provider.) I do have one issue with the fact that the execute process task leaves a copy of gzip.exe running in memory that leaves the last file locked and has to be killed manually.
Now, I'm to the zero length files issue. There isn't anything in the file system task to let me perform operations based on a file attribute. I can do this using TSQL by shelling out through xp_cmdshell and running a dir /-C, piping that to a file, BCP the file into a table, and then string parse the file names for everything with a length of 0 and then issue a delete command. I would really rather not do that. I'm fairly certain that I can do this in WMI, but I have no idea how to code that. Essentially, what I want to do is fire off a WMI query that pulls back a list of files in a given directory with a length of zero, hand that list to a for each loop, log each zero length file name into a table within SQL Server that it was processed with 0 records, then delete the file.

Two questions:
1. Anyone know how to get the Execute Process task to not leave the last instance of the exe running when it completes?
2. Anyone know how to get a list of zero length files from a specified directory to feed to a for each loop?

Comparing Two SSIS Packages?

May 24, 2007

I'd like to know how people out there are comparing ("diffing") their DTSX files.

Using XML file compare doesn't seem to work, because the package XML appears to be arbitrarily ordered and reordered by the designer in Visual Studio.

ApexSQL is supposedly planning to have a tool available in Q3, but even their product page does not seem too hopeful: "Compare and Document SSIS Packages (may be released with ApexSQL Doc and ApexSQL Diff in Q3)"

I remember seeing a CodePlex project that was hoping to address this and other issues, but it was in its infancy, and I can't seem to locate it today.

I'm thinking of starting to write my own package compare tool that will work with the SSIS .NET API, but this seems like it's going to be a ridiculous amount of work and an exercise in pain, and it seems unlikely that I will make the time to target anything more than the specific portions of the package model that I really need.

So if anyone out there has words of wisdom to share, I'd love to hear it. And if (dare I get my hopes up?) have a URL to share, I'll buy you a beer at TechEd in Orlando week after next.

Thanks in advance!

Handling Flat Files That Do Not Exist

Nov 3, 2006

Hello,

I have a package that contains 22 data flow tasks, one for each flat file that I need to process and import. I decided against making each import a seperate package because I am loading the package in an external application and calling it from there.

Now, everything works beautifully when all my text files are exported from a datasource beyond my control. I have an application that processes a series of files encoded using EBCDIC and I am not always gauranteed that all the flat files will be exported. (There may have not been any data for the day.)

I am looking for suggestions on how to handle files that do not exist. I have tried making a package level error handler (Script task) that checks the error code ("System::ErrorCode") and if it tells me that the file cannot be found, I return Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Sucsess, but that is not working for me, the package still fails. I have also thought about progmatically disabling the tasks that do not have a corresponding flat file, but it seems like over kill.

So I guess my question is this; if the file does not exist, how can I either a) skip the task in the package, or b) quietly handle the error and move on without failing the package?

Thanks!

Lee.

Where To Perform Validation On Flat Files?

Jun 29, 2006

Our ETL process involves some pre-load validation, and I'm wondering how best to implement it in SSIS.

Some details on my situation: I need to import 30 flat files with different data formats into 30 destination tables. In addition, these files share a common header and footer row format, and I need to validate these headers and footers before using the imported data downstream. (For example, the footer contains a record count, and fields in the header and footer should match some user variables.) My first approach was to write a Perl script that splits each file into three (header, data, and footer), but while that makes it easy to import the data section, it's more complicated to validate the header and footer and work them into the control flow. I think I'd also have to copy the same logic for all 30 data flows, which is less than ideal.

It looks like implementing this logic directly in SSIS is a little ugly (though that could be my lack of experience speaking). As I thought about this some more, I came up with a couple other solutions -- any critiques or comments?

1) Write a custom source adapter (which will probably contain the default flat file adapter) that knows how to validate my header and footer. I'd be able to read the file formats from an XML file, which might make my scripts more generic, and I might even be able to handle some custom data conversions more elegantly than I'm doing right now. (These files represent null numerics as whitespace rather than an empty field.)

2) Beef up the Perl splitter to validate the header and footer. If the cleanest approach is to say "assume that SSIS is only loading pre-validated data", this makes the problem entirely external.

Or am I entirely missing the mark here? Any thoughts?
