Form Field Returns Name With Double Quotes Instead Of Single Quote During Update Process.

I've a weird problem in my application. In of the pages, while trying to update the text box "Name", when I enter Linda's test, it gets saved as Linda''s test. I'm not sure if this is a problem due to SQL server. When I look at the stored procedure, I don't anything different. Also, when I update the table directly in SQL Server, the result is displayed in single quote. But if I update the field thro' the application, the returned name is with double quotes instead of single quote. Has any of you faced problems like this? What am I missing? What do I need to do to get the name saved the way I entered (with single quotes) instead of double quotes?
I have 2 SQL 6.5 databases on separate servers. Server A replicates a text field into a table on server B.
On server A the field contains text similar to THIS IS FRED'S HOUSE. After replication to Server B it looks like THIS IS FRED''S HOUSE. The distribution database also has it as THIS IS FRED''S HOUSE. Using ODBC trace I cannot see the value being passed in the text field as it is displayed as a question mark e.g. ?.
I had a procdure in SQL 7.0 in which I am using both single quote and double quotes for string values. This proceudreused to work fine in SQL 7.0 but when I upgraded SQL 7.0 to SQL 2000, this proceudre stopped working. When I changed the double quotes to single quotes, it worked fine.

Hi: Got a newbie question that's been giving me fits! Basically I'm replicating what's going on here on this board...creating a "posting" interface that takes the "message" and inserts it into a table using an ADODB connection (using INSERT INTO table name,tablecells and VALUES)
However, if someone types in a single or double quote in the body of the message, I get an error similar to this:

I think I understand why it's happening (SQL is interpreting the quote mark as a string-end), but what am I supposed to do to get around it?
I've got a flat file data source, that is to large to edit with most Windows apps on my server that contains both single and double quote characters that I need to load in a varchar column.
So I attempted to do it with a Replace in data transformation, but I can't get SSIS to allow me to use a variable or pair of single or double quotes within the replace.
If I don't replace the single quote characters with a pair then the records containing these characters all end up in my failed records output file.
Here are 5 example property legal descriptions from my FLAT FILE data source:

I'm having trouble importing a CSV file into SQL using SSIS. The trouble seems to stem from truncation and from quote encapsulated fields.
Firstly it's worth noting that some of the data within the quotes contains the separator. E.g.
12,"some text, and a comma",34
Thankfully SSIS seems to cope with that by specifying " as the Text Qualifier. My next problem was that the SSIS Import and Export Wizard gave an error: "failed because truncation occurred". But I fixed this by specifying the OutputColumnWidth for the NCHAR and NVARCHAR type columns to be the width from the table definition.
But now I have another problem with the length of fields. Consider the following where the center column is NCHAR (22)
101,"some text, and a comma",303 102,"some ""quoted text"" bye",303
The first row has the correct width (once the encapsulating quotes are stripped out), but the second row does not, because it seems that when I exported the table the export wizard escaped the quote characters within encapsulated strings using quote characters. So I am back to getting the "truncation occurred" error. How can I get around this within SSIS?
I can think of ways to resolve this issue, but I am wondering if there is a standard practice or some setting that is used to ensure that text containing a single quote, such as "Bob's house", is passed correctly to the database when using a SqlDataSource with all of the default behavior. For example, I have a FormView setup with some text fields and a SqlDataSource that is used to do the insert. There is no code in the form currently. It works fine unless I put in text with a single quote, which of course messes up the insert or update. What is the best way to deal with this? Thank you
I am hoping someone can shed light on this odd behavior I am seeing running a simple UPDATE statement on a table in SQL Server 2000. I have 2 tables - call them Table1 and Table2 for now (among many) that need to have certain columns updated as part of a single transaction process. Each of the tables has many columns. I have purposely limited the target column for updating to only ONE of the columns in trying to isolate the issue. In one case the UPDATE runs fine against Table1... at runtime in code and as a manual query when run in QueryAnalyzer or in the Query window of SSManagementStudio - either way it works fine. However, when I run the UPDATE statement against Table2 - at runtime I get rowsaffected = 0 which of course forces the code to throw an Exception (logically). When I take out the SQL stmt and run it manually in Query Analyzer, it runs BUT this is the output seen in the results pane... (0 row(s) affected) (1 row(s) affected) How does on get 2 answers for one query like this...I have never seen such behavior and it is a real frustration ... makes no sense. There is only ONE row in the table that contains the key field passed in and it is the same key field value on the other table Table1 where the SQL returns only ONE message (the one you expect) (1 row(s) affected) If anyone has any ideas where to look next, I'd appreciate it. I know this issue has been raised here before, but I have a different angle/question on it.
Flat File source, SQL Destination. No column from the source file has a consistent real width, just consistent to be less that the SQL column.
Issue:
CHAR(12), SMALLINT, CHAR(78), BIGINT
"100012",0,"This is the ""Memo"" of the record, it needs to be imported.",12
This row errors out due to the double quotes around the word MEMO. Additionally, the entire package stops processing due to there being a comma in the memo after the quote encapsulation is escaped.
Has this issue been addressed in any of the SP's? If not, how about this thinking:
1.) Character index the pattern ," and take the value of the first instance of the pattern.
2.) Character index the pattern ", and take the LAST instance of the pattern (ignoring the pattern match after the first column).
3.) Replace all double qoutes between the values of the indexes with single quotes.
4.) Proceed with the Comma separated, quote encapsulated import.
Any thoughts? Additionally, if this seems like it may work, does anyone have a clue how to program this in SSIS, or would I be better to run my files through a VBScript parser to accomplish this first?
In my asp.net page when I run a query against the database the datagrid get populated with only the records that starts with the first letter for example A good day. But none of the records that starts like this "A fine day" or "A nice day" displays in the datagrid. I tried to replace the Double Quote but it still returns only the records without " quotes. I have a Foreach loop that dynamically builds a query that gets submitted to a Progress 9.1d database. The "SELECT" portion of the query is static - the WHERE clause is built dynamically each pass through the for each loop. The vast majority of the columns have a dash ("-") in their names, so the query passed to progress has to have double quotes surrounding the column names. Not a big deal you would think. If I am retrieving 3 columns, my string would look like "SELECT ""manager-name"", ''"employee-name"", ""date-of-hire"" FROM PUB.EmployeeTable" - with the columns requiring quoted identifiers escaped with double quotes. My script task adds some additional info to the WHERE clause based on other conditions. Once my script task has built the query string, it assigns that string value to my Dts.Variables("SqlString") variable.
I can put a MsgBox() call in the Script task to display my query once it has been built (displaying Dts.Variables("SqlString").Value) - and it looks fine. Using the above example, it would simply be: SELECT "manager-name", "employee-name", "date-of-hire" FROM PUB.EmployeeTable.
So - My foreach loop is set up so that the query command is pulled from my Dts.Variables("SqlString") variable. It fails anytime my query has a column that requires quotes around it. I was confused, since I could take the exact query string displayed by my test MsgBox() and validate it's syntax against our Progress database (and even run it) and it worked fine.
So - I then inserted a breakpoint to break on PreExecute for the DataReader task (next task after Scrip task) to view the value of the Dts.Variables("SqlString") variable just before it gets assigned to the DataReader's Sql Command property. That's when I noticed that the value of the Dts.Variables("SqlString") in the Watch window actually showed that the "double" double quotes I had entered in the SELECT clause (to escape to one double quote) were being replaced with " (slash quote). SO - in the Watch window, my Dts.Variables("SqlString").Value reads as follows:

Obviously, that query is not going to fly via SQL-92/ODBC connection to our Progress database. I've tried everything I can think of - even trying to replace "" with "" in the Foreach expression editor where the Sql Command of the data reader gets assigned. I'm at a total loss. Why would SSIS plug in what looks like C# character escaping syntax when all the expressions are supposed to be VB.NET? I've already successfully run several packages that query our Progress databases that do NOT use the double quotes in the SELECT clause and they work fine. Does anyone have any ideas??
I have to use bcp to import two text files everyday for database update. The problem is that some of the character fields that are being imported have double-quotes and/or commas in them. When these are imported into the SQL Server tables additional double quotes are being added into these strings.

I have written a little bit of VB.NET code that basically takes three strings, transforms them, and returns a single string to be stored in my table.
I am running into a strange problem, however... for some reason, a number of my processed rows are missing a pair of double quotes (").
The vast majority of the records are formatted properly, and have the double quotes in the expected locations.
The most frustrating thing about it is that I have included the offensive input strings in my Test.sql test script, and when I step through the entire routine, the return value is perfect...

I have a lot of data coming in from CSV files. I have many CSV files (~20), with varying amounts of data- but some are quite large (largest file is ~230mb)
I'm trying to import it into a SQL database via SSIS, but the data is a little bit frustrating.
Many things to notice here - as well you can imagine some of the difficulties here.
After parsing, this data should have 4 columns-
Column1 Column2 Column3 Column4
Text From Vendor "Vendor Name, Inc." blah blah Next string <blank> 1234
The biggest problems stem from the double quotes mixed in with the comma because it is a comma delimited file with quotes as the text qualifier. The other problem is the double quotes with blank text ... which prevents me from doing a replace on the double quotes ... I think ...
What would be your suggestions to help me parse this out? (don't forget, some of these are large files with about 260,000 records- )
We have an issue with importing a CSV file into SQL where using a double quote " text qualifier is failing. The data is correct but it fails on a particular line, complaining about the qualifier even though the qualifier is in place and previous lines have imported fine.
From Access97 I need to execute a SQL 7.0 stored procedure that accepts several input parameters. A few of these are strings that can have imbedded single and/or double quotes (used as feet and inch identifiers). I've tried extra double quotes around the string, square brackets etc. in every combination that I can think of, with minimul success.
I have a problem when trying to display an error message from sql server 2005 on a web page with an alert (javascript command).
The Sql server 2005 returns a message like:
Insert statement conflicted with foreign key constraint "bla bla". The conflict occured indatabase "databasename", table "tablename", column 'columnname'.
In sql server 2000 the error message is the same except all names (constraint, database, table) is in single quotation marks; just like the columnname in the above example.
Is it a configurable issue on the sql server. I would prefer not to solve this issue on a number of different web pages!

I need to write VS2005 C# code using SQL OLE DB to access SQL Server 2005. I have no choice in that matter. I can create a database user with a password like COMPANY", which is a string of uppercase characters ending in an unmatched double-quote mark.
Using Microsoft SQL Server Server Management Studio I login using Windows Authentication, create an account with the password, COMPANY", check the "Enforce password policy", click "OK", and then exit.
Setup
I launch Microsoft SQL Server Server Management Studio again, select "SQL Server Authentication", type in the account name and the COMPANY" password, click the Connect button, and I'm in.
Problem
Now, I need to connect programmatically and run a stored procedure. The password is stored in clear text in hte Registry€”not my choice, it's a legacy application, and changing that is not an option open to me. (We have probably all seen company safes where the combination is scribbled on the wall in case you forget it!)
If I set the connection string in the registry to COMPANY", I get an error like this:

The closes to success I have been able to come is to set the password to "COMPANYNAME""" or 'COMPANYNAME"', which results in a System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConection Exception with a HResult of 0x80040e4d, and the message Login failed for user 'username'.
Questions
Can the password be formatted differently in the registry, or somehow processed after retrieving it, so that SQL Server 2005 will accept it?
Is this a bug in .NET Framework or SQL OleDb?
Is this simply a case of "Is it hurts, don't do it"?

How can I program BCP to output text items in double quotes (")? Here is an example (please try it) that trys to output some columns from a table to csv file. However, due to the existence of commas within the fields, the comma separation gets messed up.

You can do this OK in DTS by specifying the text identifier to be double-quotes. I do NOT want to use DTS and want to be able to do via a T-SQL procedure. Note that the real table I will export from has numeric datatypes and I would prefer NOT to wrap them in double-quotes too.
Thus, how can I alter the Exec Master..xp_Cmdshell command, to wrap each text field in double quotes. I may have to use a format file in which case please provide the format file too.
