Function That Returns Highest Of Two Columns?

Jul 20, 2005

Is there a function that compares two columns in a row and will return
the highest of the two values? Something like:

Acct Total_Dollars Collected Total_Dollars_Due
11233 900.00 1000.00

Declare @Value as money
set @Value=GetHighest(Total_Dollars_Collected,TotalDol lars_Due)
Print @Value

This function will return 1000.00 or the Total_dollars_Due??

Is there such a creature???

Analytic Function Returns Wrong Values With AVG

Feb 4, 2014

I have following select-statement:

select [date], [close], AVG([close]) over (order by [date] rows between 2 preceding and current row ) as [ma]
from dax2

My Problem is that the first 2 rows in column [ma] are not correct. They Show a value since it is not a 3 days average. In the first row in column [ma]is the same value as in [Close]. In the second row in column [ma] is the average value of the first and second value of column [Close].

How can i achieve that this "erroneous" values are not inserted or rather are shown as null.

Augent Pls Help::::Is_Member() Function Returns 0 Instead Of 1 In Sql2005

Aug 10, 2007

Hello All,

I have a situation where after creating roles and addding users to the roles then when i call Is_Member('MyRole') on my development box it tells me the user is a member of the Role,
But when i detach the database and deploy on a production server and call Is_Member('MyRole') it tells me that the user is not a member of the Role....

I went on to call the system stored procedures, sp_helprolemember to actualy determine if the user is in the 'MyRole' role and the procedure returned a list which i confirmed that the user actually exists in that role..

So am pretty confused when i call Is_Member('MyRole') and it gives me 0 meaning the user is not in the role....

Plss i need help on this thanks a million

Find A Function That Returns The Column Width

Mar 3, 2008

Dear all hi,

I would like to create a function that will return to me the width of the column of the table without giving as a parameter the table name. I need it, as I want to exceed my data in this column to the column length. I want to fill the column data with trailing blanks until I reach the column width. The function len returns the length of the data in the column.

I know that If I have the table name I can find the column width through the system tables. I don€™t want this.

Sincerely,
Hellen

SQL 2012 :: CheckSum Agg Function Returns 0 For Even Number Of Repeated Values?

Aug 14, 2014

From what I've seen, the CheckSum_Agg function appears to returns 0 for even number of repeated values. If so, then what is the practical use of this function for implementing an aggregate checksum across a set of values?

For example, the following work as expected; it returns a non-zero checksum across (1) value or across (2) unequal values.

declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-7077);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
-7077
declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-7077), (-8112);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
1035

However, the function appears to returns 0 for an even number of repeated values.

declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-7077), (-7077);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
0

It's not specific to -7077, for example:

declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-997777), (-997777);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
0

What's curious is that (3) repeated equal values will return a checksum > 0.

declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-997777), (-997777), (-997777);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
-997777

But a set of (4) repeated equal values will return 0 again.

declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-997777), (-997777), (-997777), (-997777);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
0

Finally, a set of (2) uneuqal values repeated twice will return 0 again.

declare @t table ( ID int );
insert into @t ( ID ) values (-997777), (8112), (-997777), (8112);
select checksum_agg( ID ) from @t;
-----------
0

SQL 2012 :: Query Returns 13864 On A Varchar Columns

Mar 24, 2015

We have a customer that is running SQL2012 and we are seeing a weird result on a query when we run it on their db. It is based off of a table that has about 30 columns but in this case we only care about 2 of them.

[Number] [varchar](15) NOT NULL
[Person_ID] [varchar](12) NULL

Here is the query we are doing:
Select Number,Person_ID From TableName where LP='ABC123'

The result I get back is the following:
Number:1
Person_ID:13864

The Person_ID should be a result of another table that created that Person_ID but it doesn't exist in that table. So we do not know where that 13864 is coming from. When we open that record through our application it shows Nothing for the Person_ID in that field.

When we do this query on our copy we get back
Number:1
Person_ID:

Which is exactly what we should see as the result.

Could there be a sql server setting that is set on their server that could possibly be given us back 13864 for a NULL value?

Transact SQL :: Table Valued Function Returns Nothing When Single Column Selected

But when he selects * he gets a single row.

I took a peek and see a bunch of left joins followed by a bunch of outer applies in his func. I suppose (thinking out load) if anything random like the order of rows returned or sql decisions on how query runs can affect his function, that might explain it.

Scalar Function Columns

Need Help With MAX Function Using Two Tables With Common Columns

I did write two sps, one for each table that I can compare in code and use the larger (latest) one but I am not that facile with JOINS, etc., so I can't figure how how to create a single sp to return the value I am looking for--although I assume this must not only be possible but trivial to more experienced SQLers.

SQL Server 2008 :: Using Decimal Columns In SUM Function

Jul 21, 2015

Recently I have come across a requirement where i need to design a table.

There are some columns in table like below with DECIMAL Datatype:

BldgLength

BldgHeight

BldgWeight

Based on my knowledge, i know that values before Floating-Point will not be more than 4 digits.

Now as per MSDN,

Precision => 1 - 9
Storage bytes => 5

so i can create column as:

BldgLengthDECIMAL(6,2) DEFAULT 0

OR

BldgLengthDECIMAL(9,2) DEFAULT 0

Now while reading some articles, i came to know that when we do some kind of operation like SUM Or Avg, on above column then result might be larger than current data type.

So some folks suggested me that i should keep some extra space/digits considering above MATH functions, to avoid an Arithmetic Over Flow error.

So my question is what should be value of DataType for above column ?

Using COUNT Function On Multiple Columns With GROUP BY Restrictions

Mar 10, 2014

Consider the following dataset:

COL1 | COL2 | COL3 | COL4
1 | FD | DR. A | Y
2 | FD | DR. A | Y
3 | FD | DR. A | N
4 | FD | DR. A | Y
5 | FD | DR. A | Y
6 | PF | DR. A | Y
7 | FD | DR. B | Y
8 | PF | DR. B | N

Consider the script below:

SELECT
COL2, COL3, COUNT(COL1) AS TOTALS
FROM CASES
GROUP BY COL2, COL3
ORDER BY COL3, COL2

The script above produces the following output:

COL2 | COL3 | TOTALS
FD | DR. A | 5
PF | DR. A | 1
FD | DR. B | 1
PF | DR. B | 1

I need to add one more column to the script that counts records with 'Y' in COL4 for each COL1 category (FD, PF). The final dataset would look like this:

COL2 | COL3 | TOTALS | NEWCOL
FD | DR. A | 5 | 4
PF | DR. A | 1 | 1
FD | DR. B | 1 | 1
PF | DR. B | 1 | 0

I am having a hard time trying to use COUNT() on multiple columns with the GROUP BY restrictions that exist.

Aggregate Function To Concatenate Columns Data Into A Single Row

Aug 9, 2007

Hi all,

I have a scenario which I am not able to figure out how to do it better for quite some time.

Assume I have a few rows of data :
RunningID Date WOid
1234 1/23/2007 23
1236 1/24/2007 23
1239 1/2/2007 24
1222 1/4/2007 23
1321 2/4/2007 22

My objective is to merge all RunningID into a single cell when WOid is the same (this will most probably use a "group by" to get the different WOid out). Maybe some aggregate function that can do it as:
select ReturnConca(RunningID, "#") as RunningID_str, max(Date) as MaxDate, max(WOid) as WO from tableXXX
group by WOid

Results:
RunningID_str MaxDate WO
1234#1236#1222 1/24/2007 23
1239 1/2/2007 24
1321 2/4/2007 22

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Using TOP To Select The 2nd Highest Record

Jun 19, 2007

Hai frendz,

I am having a table named Employee(int EID, float Salary)...
Now I want to select the highest salary in the table and the query is-

"select top 1 EID, Salary from Employee ORDER BY Salary DESC"

Now I need to write a query which selects the second highest salary.
So how to achieve this?..

thanx
