Importing From Excel Into SQL Server 2005 Changing Values To NULL

Mar 9, 2007

I can't figure this one out...

I have an Excel spreadsheet (Excel 2003 format) with a column of values. The column is formated to General (although I've tried it formated to text). The values are alphanumeric. However, there are a few values that are completely numeric.

Example:

_ITEMNUMBER_

1-528

K214-5

184PR

45678

As can be seen, the last value is completely numeric. I am importing into a table with one column that is formated as nvarchar(50).

I use dtswizard.exe and do a simple import into the table and the alphanumeric values import just fine but anytime a value is completely numeric it has a NULL value in the table instead of the value that should be there.

I've tried changing the format of the column to nchar, char, etc, etc. Always comes in NULL.

Any ideas?

I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Any inputs on resolving this will be much appreciated.

Null Values When Extracting Data From An Excel File

Hello,

I'm trying to import some data from a spreadsheet to a database table from a package in integration services. The problem is that I see the data when I open the excel file but when I try to run my package , it doesn't insert any rows in the table and it finishes with a success status.

My excel file has some formulas to get the data from other worksheets. I added a Data Viewer and all I see is null values in every cell.

I need help...does anyone know what's wrong?

Integration Services :: SSIS Excel Data Source Numeric Values Returned As Null

May 8, 2009

I'm using SSIS 2005 Enterprise edition,  I'm creating a package that reads an excel (xls) file using the "excel source" component, and it dumps the data into an OLEDB destination (a sql server). When I drag the excel source component and create the excel connection to my file the component automatically reads the columns and their datatypes.

The problem is that I have a column which has numeric data and the package uploads as NULL every number that starts with a zero. (note: in excel this column is formatted as "text", despite it has only numbers, because it's the only way excel maintains the left sided zeros).

So I checked the data types by right clicking the excel source component -> show advanced editor and my surprise is that this column's data type is detected as double-precision float, and it doesn't let me change it. URL... but it only works when the first row of data has a number beginning with zero on this column. How to get the data imported correctly?

Importing Excel Sheet Which Have Dynamic Column Name And Dynamic Number Of Columns

Aug 25, 2007

Hi Craig/Kamal,

I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.

We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.

I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.

Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

Importing Data From Excel To SQL Server

Sep 14, 2004

I have a Excel 2000 column which looks like this:

Column A
23456
234-67
2-56
354899865

When I create a DTS package to import this column, only the values without a hyphen get imported correctly..and a null value will show for the numbers that have a hyphen in it.

I've set my datatype to varchar, float, nvarchar, text, etc in SQL Server 2000...but nothing seems to work. I have also changed the datatype in my excel spreadsheet to text, general, etc.

I've tried so many combinations, I forget which ones I've tested...Anybody have an idea what I should try ?

Thank you

cmd2="create table mytb"

CmdLine03 = "GO
ALTER TABLE Block...
GO"

CmdLine04 = "UPDATE Block..."
CmdLine05 = "SELECT Block..."

RecordSet.Open CmdLine01, ConnectionString
RecordSet.Open CmdLine02, ConnectionString

ConnectionString.Execute CmdLine01
ConnectionString.Execute CmdLine02

'Retrieve Field titles
For ColNr = 1 To RecordSet.Fields.Count
ActiveSheet.Cells(1, ColNr).Value = RecordSet.Fields(ColNr - 1).Name
Next

ActiveSheet.Cells(2, 1).CopyFromRecordset RecordSet

'Close ADO objects
RecordSet.Close
ConnectionString.Close
Set RecordSet = Nothing
Set ConnectionString = Nothing

Importing Data From Excel To SQL SERVER Database

Aug 23, 2006

Hello all:

I have gone through most of the question posed by people, about importing data from EXCEL sheet to some table using SQL server database. I have a slight variation of this problem.

My excel file contains some information apart from the normal data.
Lets say some 5-6 lines always gives me some info about the data, like its purpose, client info, date etc...
After this INFO my actually data start, which I want to load into table.

I have found some wizard for the same, "EMS SQL MANAGER 2005", which supports most of the file formats, and load data into the database.

But we are planning to not use this tool, instead everything should be done using TSQL.

If somebody can please gives me some idea how this problem can be tackle, it would be a great help. We won't be using any Third party tools, like scripting etc...

We want to stick with just TSQL for this problem.

Thanks a bunch,
sabegh

Import Data From Excel-Sheet Via OleDb In VB.Net - How To Get A Columns Data As String?

Oct 25, 2007

Hello,

i want to import data from an excel sheet into a database. While reading from the excel sheet OleDb automatically guesses the Datatype of each column. My Problem is the first A Column which contains ~240 Lines. 210 Lines are Numbers, the latter 30 do contain strings. When i use this code:

Code BlockDim sConn As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & conf_path_current & file_to_import & ";Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=NO"""
Dim oConn As New OleDb.OleDbConnection(sConn)
Dim cmd1 As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand("Select * From [Table$]", oConn)
Dim rdr As OleDb.OleDbDataReader = cmd1.ExecuteReader
Do While rdr.Read()
Console.WriteLine(rdr.Item(0)) 'or rdr(0).ToString
Next

it will continue to read the stuff till the String-Lines are coming.
when using Item(0), it just crashes for trying to convert a DBNull to a String, when using rdr(0).ToString() it just gives me no value.

So my question is how to tell OleDB that i want that column to be completly read as String/Varchar?

Thanks for Reading

Need Some Advise On Loading Data From Excel Sheet

Oct 25, 2005

I insert/update thousands of line items daily to my MS SQL 2k db each day from multiple excel sheets that are uploaded. In Microsoft's infinite wisdom Excel and MS SQL is not "Fully" compatible and some characters throw off the uploads, cause errors in loading, etc. Each Excel sheet has from a few rows up to 50,000 rows or more. We load around 100 of these Excel sheets each day depending on what our users upload.

Our main problem appears to be with "Special Characters", anything that is not a number or letter seems to be an issue in loads. We have written our scripts to ignore a certain set of characters such as #,!, -, ', ", [, ], {, }, +, =, *, %, ~, `, <,>, etc. But we still get errors. This has become a frustrating nightmare. Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried ASP scripts, VB created exe's, converting the Excel sheet to a text file, then uploading, and other various means to get this process error free. Some files never have issues loading, some excel files will error out and not at the same point each time. We can run the same file 5 times in a row and it will stop/error at a different point each time without any rhyme or reason.

Now we are not just doing an "Insert", there are several variables that are at work when loading the data, like combining exact items into one row, associating data with ID's in another table, etc. It is not just a simple, take this data and place it here scenerio which makes this a serious headache to figure out how to make this error free and troubleshoot.

Is there some information or a direction I should look to consider a solid solution to importing data from Excel sheets to a MS SQL 2k db? These files are loaded into a specific folder and on upload they are also recorded in a table marked ready for update in the db. Our scheduler runs the exe associated with that users ID and loads their data, overwriting their previous data load, then marks the file as done.

Is there a proven method, some external program that can be used to make this a solid process, or any direction you can provide for me to research?

Empty Rows In Excel Data Sheet Used In DTS

Mar 1, 2004

Hi Everyone,

I am using a DTS package where one of the inputs is an Excel Sheet. Actually this sheet is updated manually whenever required i.e once a week or sometimes once a month, but the DTS package runs everyday.

Whenever new rows are added or deleted manually in the excel sheet, empty rows are showed in the sheet after the last row of data. This hinders the DTS package, because the destination table to which the data in the Excel sheet is sent has Primary keys in it.

Can anyone suggest me how to avoid getting the empty spaces in the excel sheet.

Thanks in advance.
